The memory in question was about a catfish poboy wherein I ordered it and the cashier washed her hands, dredged a fresh catfish filet through an egg wash and cornmeal, prepped the roll, and voila! It was heavenly. 12+ years later, the menu only said "fish" poboy sandwich. If you're a catfish purist like myself, that's a red flag, so I went with the fried chicken. Best fried chicken I've ever had!! We stopped by on our way out of New Orleans as we were headed to NYC and I'm so glad we made the detour because this blew me out of the water. They were frying up a new batch when we arrived so we waited about 15 minutes but SOOO WORTH! The chicken from the fresh batch was fried to optimal crispiness and juiciness and it was also perfectly seasoned. I don't think there's another place that tops the fried chicken here. I don't do gas station fried chicken because it tends to be dry, greasy and blend but these are the opposite. We were there around lunch time but early enough to not have to wait to order our food. We got the 4 piece dark meat combo. Our plate was loaded with seasoned fries and comes with a fountain drink. The chicken was fantastic. The chicken was so moist and well seasoned with a kick. When I say coming here right after my touchdown flight in NOLA was a huge mistake, I mean it. After a 9 hour flight with a 5 hour layover, I was STARVING. I got off my plane, went to my hostel, spoke with a man in the street about where I could get some good food and we walked down over to Keys. He warned me too. He told me "young lady this is gonna be the best fried chicken you've ever had". I took it like a grain of salt because who doesn't have a favorite fried chicken place, right? So I went in, got a breast, two thighs, two legs and took my lil baggie and went to the church across the street with him. Went ate that chicken on the church steps and when I tell you I was saved. It was damn near the best fried chicken I've ever had. I mean, my whole trip to NOLA was full of fried chicken from some of the best places in NOLA and I couldn't help but think back to Keys and be like "this isn't the same". For the price? The size? On our visit to New Orleans, we stayed walking distance from this gas station store. This is located off of Rampart Street between the French quarter and Tremé. Pretty much everything inside is about the same as you would expect from most gas stations stores that you've been to....Except: THE FOOD IS EXCELLENT! They have a kitchen which serves New Orleans homemade style food. There's no seating for dining. This is takeout only. I didn't take a picture of the oyster Po' boy sandwich, but it was the best oyster Po' boy we've had in New Orleans so far (no offense everyone else). I didn't expect it. The fried chicken was done to perfection and not too greasy. The meat pies were well seasoned with a nice mixture of herbs and onions, etc. They had an assortment of cakes and pies. We had the strawberry cake which was not as heavy as it looked in richness. Some of the Cashiers during night shift are rude to customers and at times I've seen them draw their hand guns out to customers. I've had my experience disrespect as a loyal customer. Just two weeks ago, I purchased food and a pack of cigarettes and I asked for a receipt. The Cashiers started to ask me about not trusting him and I simply replied by saying "I need the receipt." So the Cashier steadily complaining and made statements such as "they always think somebody's stealing from them and that I must be smoking dope or something." I replied to him by stating " I don't have to be smoking dope to ask for a receipt and besides, I'm an Addictions Counselor." He went on ranting and I got my receipt and left. Over the times of purchasing items from the store, I've witnessed rude customer services especially among Blacks that patronage their business and they seemed to have been unappreciative by not saying thank you as I've witnessed them telling white customers. The made-to-order tenders here are refreshingly non-greasy, skinless, lightly fried and seasoned with just salt and pepper. KEY'S REALLY SHOULD'VE MADE THE T-P'S LIST. The newspaper recently posted their poll's top 5: 1) Mr. Ed's, 2) Willie Mae's, 3) Popeyes, 4) Chubbie's, 5) Dooky Chase. A few other notable exclusions: Manchu Food and Quarter Grocery. I say make it a top 10. ALL COMBO MEALS ARE LESS THAN $7.99. Of course this is a take-out joint but the Mississippi's riverside benches are only 7 blocks away (menu in photos). But I skip the combo because, like most convenience stores, the fries suck. CAVEAT/TIP: rating is based on chicken made to order and not from the hot case. It's open 24 hours. And it has a sign outside that says "Now serving breakfast!" The breakfast thing puzzles me, because why would a gas station also serve breakfast. Then again, this is the city with businesses that sell bikes plus formal wear, so I suppose this isn't particularly odd given the context. In the past, I've had significantly less than awesome experiences here, most notably the time we paid for $20 in gas that came out of the pump in such a slow, pathetic trickle we were literally there for almost thirty minutes. Super lame. Today, I was annoyed that I had to go inside to get the receipt for my gas, which I paid for at the pump. Usually I'm too lazy to do this, but today I had to have the receipt. Yes, it cost me approximately three minutes and twenty extra steps, but it's a pet peeve of mine. How hard is it to make sure receipts can be printed at the pump? For seriously. Other noteworthy qualities of this gas station include, again, the open 24 hours thing. It's located on Rampart St., just outside the French Quarter, making it the only gas station I'm aware of that's convenient if you're in the FQ and need gas. Or a tshirt, toothbrush, newspaper, cold drink and -- now -- breakfast! They sell an array of seemingly bizarre items for a gas station, but nothing you wouldn't expect to find at your friendly neighborhood ghetto mart. Which I suppose is what this is. Where I come from (the Pacific NW), gas station food is mostly garbage. Even the rural markets that have more substance to them put out mediocre offerings at best. However in a place like NOLA, this seems to be a thing. And Key's is doing this thing right. This 24-hour haven is home to a gas station, small convenience store, and fried-food case that brings many delights. The folks who run the joint are super nice, no matter what hour you straggle in. For me, it was various times from mid-afternoon to middle of the wee hours. Whether I came in for water, beer, fried chicken or cat food (the strays at my AirBnB were so cute!), they delivered in spades. The fried chicken here is pretty damn good. Like, not your usual gas station fare. Moist, tender, and flavorful. A little on the greasy side, but not so much that your tum-tum hurts. All around good chicken. The crawfish and meat pies are pretty tasty, with the meat pie being a clear winner. And if you're bored, you can hang and watch TV with them. There seems to always be something interesting on.
