Everyone in the reviews talking about feces and the smell... it's a feed lot, it's going to smell like that. But my biggest issue is, with having an agricultural background and coming from an area where there is the largest feed lot in CA, your quality of beef and your yield would be higher if you added shade and misters. Temps are hitting well over 100° and we just passed the feed lot at 7pm and could count at least 5 dead heifers at a progressed state of bloat and that was just in the front pens that you can see from the highway! You say you're quality beef producers but how can you say that if your pens aren't even being checked on a regular? Beef tastes better and is higher quality when they aren't stressed out, just an fyi. read more

The smell is absolutely vile. I thought it was a wreaked truck overloaded with full port-a-pottys. Checked the map, and saw it was a beef mill. There was a thick layer of fog coming from the property, stretched across the highway. It was sickening. read more

Passing this place on I-40 will break your heart. To see cows cramped in tiny pens while surrounded by acres of grassy pastures is disgusting and inhumane. Cows are cramped in here with hundreds of others, some of them literally dead, climbing on top of mountains of manure. I've known beef farmers and they'd be ashamed of this type of facility representing the industry. Not to mention I saw a worker when I passed running around with a gas mask on because of the smell/ammonia. Horrible. read more

Shame on you! Broke my heart to see the cattle, not even moving just laying in feces, packed so tight they can't move.

I didn't understand where the strong smell of feces was coming from later I discovered 10 miles down the road the biggest amount of cattle I've ever seen caged in the smallest area and I'm not sure if half the cattle was alive or dead sitting and laying on the ground. Very sad to see and extremely disappointed that the owners find it OK display this atrocious negligence. read more

Saddened by this place. Plain greed and the energy is so horrible. No shade, cows are crammed and they all look not happy. The bane does not appeal to the place. Discussing horrible stench! We've driven by other ranch's and they do not smell this awful. read more

So Sad! If you traveled west of Amarillo, TX, on I-40, the Nortex Feedlot, no doubt, you have driven past a huge cattle feedlot with hundreds of thousands of cattle, calves included, standing, or lying down on huge mounds of manure. The cattle and their calves are cruelly packed side-by-side like sardines, with no shade, contained in small pipe lots -- all held there for months, where the penned animals are fattened before being shipped to slaughterhouses. There is no telling what they are being forced to eat and drink. It is a living in hell on earth for those cows and calves!!! It is a horrifying, pitiful sight to see and smell as you drive past! If you are even half a human, you feel much compassion for the cows and their calves! Just behind the small side-by-side pens are acres and acres of grassy fields. Can you imagine being a cow, if you have a shred of empathy, looking through those pipe bars, while standing or lying down on mounds of wet shit, seeing all that grassy acreage with grass as far as the eye can see, wishing to walk, to room free, to run, to graze on that huge grassy field, even during that last months of your life?! I am surprised that in this area, with all the "Are You Saved," "Believe in Jesus" Billboards all up and down the interstate, in the Heart of the Bible Belt, that there are "Christians" who are quick to preach Scripture word from word, who are quick to judge others and to tell people how to live their lives, yet fail, Fail, FAIL to "walk to talk!" They fail to truly understand, to integrate and to practice the Teachings in the Bible, in every, Every, EVERY aspect in their own lives?! Their beliefs are lived superficially, maybe just on Sundays? What about the other six days? For a Christian, for all of us, everything we do should be sacred! That includes how you raise your family, how you value your relationships and treat others, in what kind of work you do, and with your business! Blessed is the one who integrates the Bible's Teachings in every aspect of their lives, who sees and understands that everything in Divine! The cows and calves, who are crowded together, who are standing, lying down in mounds of shit, are Creatures of God! Yes, they are a valuable food source for the country, the world but they, during the last months of their life, should be treated with more dignity, compassion and care for their comfort! Here are some Bible quotes for you: In Genesis 1:28: "And God blessed them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth." Subdue doesn't mean to shove them into shit filled pens, feed then crappy food, dirty water, neglect them, and treat them like shit until you can load them into a livestock trailer and collect a paycheck! The subtle cruelty that man inflicts upon animals, especially food source animals, is often denied, ignored, overlooked, and/or justified by himself and by others when their attention is solely fixed on money! Such a man has no credibility with God! Joel 1:18: "How the beasts groan! The herds of cattle wander aimlessly, Because there is no pasture for them; Even the flocks of sheep suffer." Your "beasts groan!!! They can't "wander" because you have penned them up in small spaces where they stand and lie in shit month after month... day and night! Do you understand that it is a living hell for them! Do you not have any empathy for creatures of God? Are you so focused on money that you can't see just how cruel your operation is? So, WWJD? What or how would Jesus treat his cattle? Have you heard of the Principle of Good Stewardship where each person is morally obligated to respect the natural environment as well as his own being as precious gifts from God, and thereby, to use these gifts wisely in accord with their design and purpose. Recognizing the distinction then between a person and an animal, and following the principle of stewardship, animals can be used for labor, food, clothing, transportation, or other needs. However, human beings must not cause animals to suffer and to die needlessly. Many of your cows died of sickness, from the heat. If animals are raised specifically for a purpose, like cows for meat, then they should be treated with care and not with neglect, mistreated or cruelty. Now, In stark contrast, less than one mile away, your neighbor, another rancher, has his cattle roaming free on his grassy lands. What an excellent example of a responsible cattlemen, who practices Good Stewardship, who treats his cattle as God's creatures despite that they are animals and our food source! So Sad! And, God is watching! read more

Let's play a game. How about someone shoves the owners along with any investors along with them in a cramped and vile and inhabitable environment and see how they liked it. How dare use "quality" in your name. Too often companies like this one are taking advantage and manipulating consumers. This needs to stop. YOU, yes Yelper, you have the choice. You also have the tools to do your research. Find out the facts. Know where your beef is from and support local farmers who take pride in their work. Cattle should have but only one bad day. You will taste the difference. Your gut will be pleased and your heart will be happy. You will be able to sleep at night, as for these owners...I hope these cows haunt them when they close their eyes at night. Moooo read more

I just passed this farm on my way back to Dallas, and smelled the strongest feces smell literally miles before we even passed this farm. There were pens full of hundreds of cows standing in their own feces, there was not a single blade of grass in these pens. It took about 3 minutes of us driving 78mph, and we saw cows in pens for this entire duration. There were HUNDREDS of cows, and I can't exaggerate how incredibly terrible this sight was. I turned to my partner and stated that I will literally never again consume beef and dairy products because of this experience. As someone who has consumed meat and dairy products daily for my entire 25 years of life, this says a lot. I have never been one to leave reviews, and am only downloading Yelp as of right now to document the literal horror I just smelled and witnessed. Please do not spent a single dollar on this disgusting farm. read more

Absolute cruelty and abuse. This place should be shut down. Have driven past it many times and am always in tears afterwards. Hundreds of cows scrunched into tiny, disgusting fenced areas with an inexplicable stench. They can barely move. How this place thinks they can produce "quality beef" from cows suffering and unable to move is beyond me. And it's surrounded by vast, open land! What are they thinking? Obviously not much. read more

I have passed this shithole twice now and I can't get over the conditions. Never any humans. Cows laying in filth. Penned into an area less than 10 acres are about 2500 head of cattle. They put breeds together in case they mate and then the cows get killed pregnant. It's surrounded by beautiful pasture yet these cows are confined, shoulder to shoulder in muck and manure. This company should be shut down. Another reason to buy local read more

This is a perfect reason to get away from commercially raised beef. There is nothing good about the living conditions with these cattle. This place really opens your eyes to the evils of concentrated feedlots. Rarely are these places placed along an interstate highway but this one's out there for all to see and smell. The first thing that hits you is the antibiotic smell. The cows being pumped full of whatever it is to keep them alive. And then the fecal matter fumes kick in and are overpowering from the thousands of cows standing in excrement. The smell lingers downwind for a solid ten minutes and that's driving 80 miles per hour. I can't imagine the methane. Little known fact is -- forget cars -- these places are among the world's most potent contributors to global greenhouse gases. Makes one seriously think about the beef in their diet. read more

Drove through here to and from vacation. I was asleep on the way to our destination and it was about 3am. The stench woke me from a dead sleep. Wife said she thought it was a plant misting fertilizer over some fields as in the darkness she was unable to see the cattle. Driving home, it was light and we could see cattle crammed in pens and the mister's where spraying above the cattle to help cool them in the 108°f heat. It is almost unbelievable what is allowed into our food chain as it is that they do it right along one of the most travelled hwy's in the country for everyone to witness. read more

I drove past this while on a road trip and was appalled at the conditions. These cows are crammed so tightly into a small space outdoors. When I googled the business all I found were accolades about their humane treatment of the cows and how they're able to graze on the natural grass. This is insane. If this is "grass fed" beef I have been severely mislead. This is not how cows are supposed to live. read more

If I could give this disgusting horrid smelling hell hole of a place less than no stars I would. My husband and I were on a road trip and coming across I-40 at night when we smelled something so vile. As we got closer I commented that it was a factory. Then we saw the "Quality Beef" sign and THOUSANDS of factory cattle jammed into small holding pens literally mere feet from the interstate. Even at night we could see the poor living conditions these animals are enduring with no grass, walking in mud and feces, bright lights on them at night, no space to move as so many were penned in one place and again the unbelievable atrocity of it all is made worse by the fact that everyone driving on I-40 must look at it. Disgusting beyond all words. This is the worst case of animal cruelty that I've ever seen in person. Since the signage had Chinese lettering under the "Quality Beef" wording I'm guessing there is a foreign holding company involved. Their practices need to be investigated as there is no possible way there is any regard for the welfare of these animals. ALWAYS buy from facilities that raise the cattle on grass not hormones and antibiotics and humanely, ethically treat them. What we witnessed is no way of life for any creature. read more

I will agree with the previous posters...when we first drove by this place we thought it was a junkyard. As we got closer we saw cows crammed so tightly together for as far as the eye could see. It was terribly inhumane and made my heart sink. I was completely shocked and appalled at the living conditions of these poor animals. I could not believe what I had seen :( this will make me rethink my eating choices. I've never been so disgusted. This place is an abomination. Every time we drive through here, the beautiful vast spaces of Texas are contrasted by this absolute abuse of livestock stacked on top of one another in a pit of feces dust that pollutes even the highway air for miles driving through at 70mph. It seems particular egregious given the open grasslands surrounding this horror. If anyone knows which companies source their cattle from this company, please let the world know so we can boycott these animal abusers when buying beef. I would never purposefully eat this garbage. From reading the Texas Observer and other articles, it looks like all the politicians in the area are in on it, taking their kickbacks and fully enabling this animal abuse with another feedlot permit in the works. Shame on you if you're involved. Awful!! read more

This place is morally reprehensible, and if it is owned by the Chinese as someone else suggested, they bring dishonor and shame upon their family and ancestors. As a truck driver I hate having to drive past this place. Not so bad in winter when the cold suppresses the manure decomposition, but when it gets hot it is suffocating, especially when the wind isn't blowing. Just drove by it again tonight and you could actually see the thick gas cloud of stink as the lights passed through it. The overpowering stench creeps in the cab even with the windows up and the AC vents completely off well before I get close to this facility. I understand people have to make money but this place has to be in violation of some law or code and the only reason these conditions persist is someone is paying off politicians. read more

Super sad, drove by this and the cows live in horrible conditions. It was just the right timing to see the truck turning down the dirt road with dead cows on the back of the truck, cows are stuffed to the max compacity in these small pens, the smell is horrendous, it goes on for miles, the amonia smell is bad. How is it that we consume meat that comes from these deplorable conditions, I guess we are whaf we eat. Yet, right accross the way, theres cows grazing it in the grass and theres large open field grasses right next door to these animals confined in small pens, if I could set them free to at least graze the fields next to them, I so would. Set better living conditions for these poor animals. read more

I passed by this factory farm on interstate 40 today and was appalled at the inhumane conditions I observed. The cows were piled on top of each other in a filthy, cramped outdoor pen that was so full of excrement that the stench permeated my car as I drove by. There must be so much methane produced from the manure, I don't know how these cows could get any oxygen to breathe. It was absolutely disgusting and when I called the company to inquire about their treatment of these animals, whoever answered the phone hung up on me without so much as a reply. This company should not get away with these cruel, unethical practices. read more

F*** this place! No animal deserves to be treated this way. Gut wrenching extremely inhuman conditions. Before anyone says "then don't eat meat" I don't! I also donate to a farm sanctuary. I've tried multiple times to call and get this hell hole shut down.. the owner of this place will pay. This is American greed at its finest. Let's see how many animals we can fill up into a pen. I hope the owner gets treated the same way his cattle does one day. I wished I could give negative stars. Like others have posted...the conditions these poor cows are existing in is heartbreaking and evil. The smell is like nothing I've ever experienced.
