It was founded by husband-and-wife duo Garry and Joanne Brooks (the name "Brooks Note" combines Garry's last name and Joanne's maiden name, Note). Garry was a Navy veteran who transitioned into a lucrative career in tech, but after planting a small backyard vineyard, he realized his true passion was winemaking. He left the tech world, earned a degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis, and cut his teeth at prestigious wineries like Ravenswood, Kosta Browne, and Dutton-Goldfield. They officially launched Brooks Note as a commercial label in 2011.  It is a must visit.

Right when we walked in we knew we had made a good decision. Lawrence, the owner, welcomed us, poured our tastings and was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The winery grows a lot of pinot noir but also makes some whites and rose. We each got the mixed wine tasting flight of 5 wines ($30). They were all delicious in their own ways! Also comes with water and a cheese plate. We walked out purchasing 2 bottles.

They are refreshing and easy to drink, I easily consider the first 3 to be "porch pounders", and though they pair great with food they can be enjoyed alone as well. Lucas, the winemaker for Koch was there and provided our tasting. We enjoyed his company and level of service, he made us feel at home the entire time. Lucas was also kind enough to give us an early taste of some of the wines still in barrels and to offer us some of their upcoming empanada tastings. It was nice to feel amongst friends and be in a relaxed setting and the whole experience was awesome! The tasting room is on the family property where there are animals and farming, it has a beautiful view of vineyards and the east outskirts of Petaluma. We also confirmed beforehand that they are pet friendly so we were able to take our little macaw with us. She enjoyed a delicious strawberry that was grown on the property. If you plan to bring a dog, there are two great pyrenees that are guarding sheep and pigs behind an electric fence, they are super friendly and won't bother, but just something to note for other dog owners. If you enjoy great wine and a homey environment and friendly service I definitely recommend visiting Koch Family Vineyards. They are currently open Wednesday - Sunday, 11am - 7pm so there's no pressure of having to make the winery before 3 or 4pm like most places. Half the fun here is getting to Belden Barns--the road over Sonoma Mountain makes it a bit of a…read morechallenge and the entrance isn't super-clear, but once you get inside this sprawling property (and close the gate to keep the deer out) you'll get a chance to see a really cool vineyard/farm/winery taking shape. The tasting in an old barn is unpretentious and straightforward. After a nice Rose' to start, the unfiltered Sauvignon Blanc was an unexpectedly substantive and fruit-forward SB that deserves the plaudits it has received. Belden Barns is also the site of the only Gruner Veltliner planting in Sonoma County (and one of a tiny handful in the whole state) and the estate bottling of it is nicely-made, with a clean finish and solid acidity. The Serendipity Pinot Noir is outstanding--liked it much more than the Estate Pinot Noir, though it was nice to see the contrast in winemaking style between the two (go for the Estate if you like cherry cola). As for the Syrah, well, if you like Syrah, you'll likely like this Syrah. It's a good cool climate Syrah. The tasting consisted of 6 wines but they had plenty of other interesting bottles and we picked up their Blanc de Noirs and a Late Harvest Viognier. Surrounded by so many Chard/Pinot-only places, it's refreshing to find variety while still maintaining quality. While the Wishing Tree experience was a great way to cap off the visit, it was neat just to be able to walk around the vines and see some of the views off of Sonoma Mountain and into the valleys and hills around. There's a lot of interesting history about the property and some really cool farming ideas that they're working on. It's nice to see a winery that's taking a different direction from most others. We'll definitely be back to try the cider and some other wines and will look forward to seeing how the place and the wines develop.

Beyond growing amazing grapes and making them into delicious, award-winning wines, they also have residencies for young farmers to have access to some of their land to so they can launch their farming careers. Come here for a tasting and you'll be captivated by the down-home farm-y feeling of the land. You can sense it's an intentional space as soon as you set foot on the property. They offer a variety of wines to taste and experience--from a bubbly to a white, to a variety of reds--you can't go wrong with a single sip. My favorite was Serendipity. The highlight of the visit isn't about grapes or farming or wine. It's about The Wishing Tree. After you walk through the vines, stop by the tree and make a wish for yourself, attach it to the tree, and let destiny take care of the rest. This is a super special spot in Sonoma County you won't want to miss.

However, to save money they have chosen to use propane canons to ward off birds instead of using netting like other vineyards. At least 30 to 40 families in close proximity have to deal with this noise nuisance for months until harvest lasting from sun up to sunset every day. After many complaints over the years, they made a valient effort last year to keep the noise down. This year, they're back at it. So enjoy your cheap wine (selling for $50 a case) at our expense including children and pets who are disturbed daily until harvest.

She combines old world pedigree and knowledge with new world grapes to produce scintillating wines. We enjoyed a tasting led by her Director of Sales and right hand man, Alex. We enjoyed a tour of the winery, their lab, and the headed to the tasting room. Alex expertly led us through the tasting, describing the components and characteristics of each wine. He was knowledgeable, engaging and a pleasure to interact with. They are located a bit off the beaten path but are well worth the visit. This is not a winery that is in a majestic setting producing sub-par wines, but rather a winery focused on production of world-class wines and providing an educational and entertaining experience.
