Let's start off by putting this. I travel almost 2 hours from home once a month to obtain doughnuts from PVD. Over time I've learned that I prefer their brioche and filled doughnuts over the others. I do like the cake doughnuts but I often find for my liking the old fashioned are a bit drier then I enjoy (and as someone who doesn't pair it with coffee or tea, the OF usually needs a little dunkage for me).
What is there not to love about this place? Well besides the long lines (hello indicator of awesomeness) and the fact that you are paying for a gourmet doughnut (sometimes $3.25 per doughnut but it's worth it IMO)- there isn't much I don't absolutely like/love/adore about PVDonuts- other then the fact that it is 2ish hours away. Again worth it.
The menu is stable for a month which gives you time if you see something you want. You don't get that often with most places as they tend to change flavors daily. The menu is also SUPER eclectic. They offer vegan doughnuts (surprisingly some of my favs), some staples such as coffee milk (I like coffee ice cream but not coffee and I LIKE this doughnut), cereal milk, some standard sprinkled editions, and just some regular easy peasy stuff for those picky eaters (adults and kids alike). Then they offer things like a vegan pb&j filled, Dunkaroo Thursday, Everything Bagel Donut Wednesday (the best I've found so far from Boston to NYC), Matcha Green Tea flavored, Twix flavored, Pumpkin Churro Cheesecake filled, Butterbeer, Marshmallow Sweet Potato, and French Cruller style that are to DIE FOR! They do fun themes like Throwback to the 90's (the birth of Dunkaroo and a Cosmic Brownie, stay tuned it's making a comeback March 18') and Garden Parties, Back to School (see animal cracker doughnut), and Summer Parties. Essentially everything they do- they do with a little extra kick and pizzaz. And they do it well. They also usually have a few daily specials which are things of magic that they throw together day of.
Be prepared. You can order ahead of time through their website (which is what I've started doing) to ensure you actually get what you want from the menu. If you don't, you might show up to no doughnuts being left at 11am, a line down the street, a short line inside, or no line and a full spectrum of their menu- it is really hit or miss depending on the weather, the day of the week, and a lot of other unknown factors (how hungry the local college kids are, school vacation, etc.) I went on Friday (2/23) for a 1:30ish pick-up and they were down to their last 250 or so doughnuts. Some specials, some normal menu but there was also a short line. Other days I've gone I've waited outside for 30-45 minutes.
They offer tea and cold brew from the Nitro Cart, I believe they also have hot coffee. The atmosphere is awesome, the lighting is fabulous, and the staff are just over the top wonderful human beings. There is plenty of seating at a large table or a small couch and chair area in the front. The doughnut size will not leave you hungry but I suggest buying a few and sampling (my friends and I do splitsies usually). There are heaters outside the door and they have a pretty solid system for moving things along. I've tried many a doughnut from Maine to Florida and so far PVD takes the top spot for me. I love Kane's, Blackbird is fun, Doughnut Plant is great but the whole PVD experience, flavor, and offerings adds up to sheer perfection for me!
