Last week I made my first trip to PVDonuts. I was excited to be going during the week as I had heard the lines are atrocious on weekends and, more often than not, they sell out quickly. Obviously these donuts are in high demand; with limited quantities available they are hard to get lately. The shop itself was nice: small, cute, a little quirky. I liked the decor and overall feel. Even with only 4 people ahead of me, the wait was still rather long. Not great if you're in a rush and looking to pop in for a quick coffee and a donut on your way to work.
I like the idea of a rotating monthly menu. It gives you something new to try each time you're there. One of the first things I noticed was that it was difficult to decide what to order. The donuts are not on display in a case, but kept in the rolling baker's racks. To see what options you have that may interest you (I like to SEE the food, not just read the names on the menu board) you have to wait to get to the counter where they have one of each on plates with glass covers. Not a huge deal, but unless you already know what you want, it's hard to decide ahead of time while you wait and expedite the process.
Once I was able to see the donuts I had a better idea which looked appealing and how the flavor combinations were carried out. For example; the "Dave's coffee milk" donut had coffee glaze with chopped espresso pieces on half, while the "strawberry milk" was only strawberry glaze with sprinkles (not as impressive as I had imagined).
They offer two types of donuts, old fashioned and brioche. I ordered an assortment of both to try.
Once I was able to taste the donuts I must sadly say I was underwhelmed. I had high hopes for the "pumpkin coffee cake old fashioned" and was disappointed. The old fashioned in general were very dry and crusty on the outside. Normally old fashioned are supposed to be dense, and rather cakey, but remain soft and still have a level of moistness. These did not have that texture. It made the whole donut very dry and lost its softness. As to the flavor, there wasn't much pumpkin taste at all. If I wasn't told it was pumpkin I wouldn't know. The flavor needs to go up a notch or three. Granted, it doesn't need to be overwhelming, but should be identifiable. The crumb topping was ok, no complaints on that part. As to the other old fashioned, they were chocolate and strawberry milk glazed. The glaze was not enough flavor or sweetness to improve anything about the underlying donut. :(
The brioche donuts were slightly better! My favorite of them all was the Dave's coffee milk. The glaze was nice, and did have minimal coffee flavor (I need more!) The crunchy espresso bean pieces were creative and added nice texture and taste. The donut itself was still needing some improvement, but not as badly as the old fashioned variety. The brioche had nice air pockets, but the dough may have been over worked, as it was still a bit tough and not as fine and airy as it should be in a pastry like this. I also had the cereal and milk donut. All the fruity pebbles cereal fell off when I tried to pick it up and eat it. There wasn't enough glaze to hold them on, nor much flavor outside of what the cereal provided. The chocolate sprinkle donut was nothing special. The brioche base needs tweaking, the glaze again wasn't substantial enough to add flavor to this, so it came off really bland.
Overall I hope PVDonuts can improve their recipes and fine tune their pastry skills as they settle into their new home. I think their concepts and flavor ideas are unique and creative, but lack the execution that I would expect for the price. These donuts are pricey, by the way. $2.75 each for old fashioned, $3.25 for brioche if I recall correctly. For 5 donuts I paid over $16. For $16 I want to be dazzled and sadly I didn't get that this time.
