QUALITY Fish & Chips spot in Putney, a southwest London suburb. Located in close walking distance to the Putney Riverbanks, the chaps runnin' the show were actually quite friendly compared to our other eating adventures in London. Despite what it's name implies, the menu is more than just fish & chips, BUT us Yankees, we're IN ENGLAND!!! No way I'm chowing down on anything else here! That being said, we ordered a few things...
*LARGE COD: HOLEY MOLEY! This large piece could feed Godzilla, it was so huge!!! Biggest chunk of fish I've ever been served anywhere. I was NOT expecting that!! Batter was still crisp even after a 10 min. walk. The paper wrapping was fairly greased up, but the fish itself didn't taste oily at all. That's some magical paper! Fish was flaky and moist. Better than what I recalled from my previous British jaunts.
*LARGE HADDOCK: Righto! Just as IMPRESSIVE as the large cod in size. Wifey could not tell the difference in taste between cod & haddock, but I was kinda partial to haddock, as was my little man.
*LARGE CHIPS: Just like the impressively large fish cuts, this serving of potato wedges was more than enough to feed my family and, THEN SOME! This was probably the most French fries we've ever been served, and pretty tasty for English chips :)
*KID'S FISHFINGERS: No gargantuan serving here, thankfully. Comes with 3 kid sized pieces that my young squires readily enjoyed. Comes with chips, too.
For this Yankee family's first foray into the classic English Fish & Chips, Putney Pier offered impressive visuals and tasty morsels. Don't forget to ask for ketchup AND tartare sauce. These aren't automatically added to your take away bag, and they don't offer them freely. Easy recommendation. read more
