What a fantastic spot for breakfast! We went in with a group of five and, while seating was a bit…read moretight for a group that size, the atmosphere, food, and tea more than made up for it. I had the french toast with raspberry compote and crème fraîche. My wife had the scrambled eggs on toast, my daughter has the french toast with maple bacon, my son had the blueberry pancake, and my niece had the yoghurt with granola. We were all extremely pleased with our meals.

This recently-opened Chiswick/Hammersmith branch has bagged the prime spot right on Young's Corner where The Goldhawk Road meets The High Road. They've got huge windows looking out on the local traffic and commuters rushing to nearby Stamford Brook station. It's a great place to watch the world go by. Inside could be described as industrial-classroom chic, with wooden surfaces, metal stools and a selection of interesting lightbulbs dangling from the ceiling. Only a few days after opening it was already packed at lunchtime with people "working" on the wifi with their obligatory silver MacBooks. Is this what unemployed people do these days? Or is this a new type of job I don't know about? Actually... they're probably just writing Yelp reviews

Ask a German living outside of Germany what they miss the most about home and I guarantee you that…read morethey will almost always mention the bread. I do not have such strong ties to German bread, but my time in Berlin has taught me how to appreciate a good pretzel (with butter if necessary, not mustard, you heathen!). Bäkehaus isn't quite as gemütlich (or cozy) as your favorite neighborhood bakery in Germany since it's all self-service, but it gets the job done. The pretzels were soft and chewy and surprisingly enough, reasonably priced! Bäkehaus also offers loaves of rye bread and a plethora of sandwiches with a German twist (I spotted a pork schnitzel sandwich with cranberry sauce on ciabatta for £3.99!), so why not grab something here for lunch instead of opting for a pricey sandwich from Pret or a sad sandwich from Tesco? It's located on the high street just minutes away from the Tube station, so you really don't have an excuse.

The coffee is ok (self service Piacetto is not that bad). The prices are popular. I mean, 1.30 for one spinach and goat's cheese strudel? Serious? I love it. All the thing is self service and they have no toilet, so it's good for a quick visit or a take away, but you won't regret it. Today I tried the hazenult speciality and I can't wait to come back. Now you can even see them preparing the cakes in the entrance. I love it. When are they opening a second branch?

Standard problem, post 6:30pm in a Saturday, none of the coffee shops in the area were open. So we started walking, while looking for an Italian restaurant (they do serve coffee after dinner, right?) We just happened to find Cafe Maya at the Polish cultural Center before we found an Italian restaurant on this street and headed in. They have a ton of Polish dishes on their menu and there is a more upscale Polish restaurant upstairs. Cafe Maya operates as a self service cafe, but it has beautifully cosy interiors. Hot meals meals from the kitchen are delivered to your table, but you order and pay first and pick up your drinks and cakes before you sit down. We tried lattes and flat whites and were very very happy. We also tasted a chocolate and cheese cake for the first time in our life and never realised how well the flavours go together. Almost like a cream cheese frosting taste, but baked along with the cake. Not sure I'm explaining this well, but you have to try it! We didn't try any of the food as we had reservations elsewhere with friends, but I'd love to go back to taste their food too.
