It was a huge hit with everyone! The 6 inch cake was $69 and I added a customized birthday message on chocolate for an extra $3 which was a nice personal touch. One thing to keep in mind is that you'll want to order online well in advance because their cakes sell out quickly. I can definitely see why. They're fantastic! Gary's only allows to order the fresh mango cakes up to one week ahead to ensure they have enough ripe mangos, which I admire their dedication. We ordered the 6 inch cake for 9 people (7 adults and 2 kids) and everyone got a thin to average slice. The cake is definitely prettier than the other fresh mango cakes on the market, has a lot more mangos that are perfectly ripe and sweet, there is less wipped cream, and the sponge cake is softer. The family agreed that Gary's has the best fresh mango cake but at $69 for a 6 inch cake, versus $43 for a 6 inch mango cake from Saint Germaine, a cake from Gary's is definitely a treat and for special occasions. Is Gary's worth the premium price? I think so but not everyone in my family agreed. One thing to note: Gary's do offer cake in a jar that's $8.50 each. When we went, they had a BOGO deal with the mango cake jars. My nephew asked my sister to buy the BOGO deal knowing that the 6 inch cake was not going to be enough, as the kids like having a second slice of cake.

I believe they were one of the first places in Vancouver to really bring these fruit-shaped desserts to the forefront, and then slowly everyone else started following the trend. The mango is definitely my favourite. It's light, fruity and refreshing and the white chocolate shell gives you that little crack when you bite into it. I tried the clementine/orange one as well and I would probably skip that one next time. It's mostly cream with not a ton of cake. The good news is that the mousse is pretty light, so even though there's a lot of it, it doesn't feel like an incredibly heavy dessert. I've died and gone to pastry heaven!!! Purebread had SO many choices I didn't know where to start. My wife ordered a savory Broccoli & Cheese pastry that was flavorful and had wonderful textures. I ordered a Earl Grey & Lavender scone and while it was mildly dry (as most scones are) it had an incredible flavor and paired well with my Earl Grey tea. We also got a Cinnamon Roll to go and saved that for a late night snack... which was one of the best cinnamon rolls I've ever had. This isn't a Gluten Free or Sugar Free friendly place... but yet, what do you expect with a true bakery? It was incredible and I'd recommend it to anyone who's addiction is carbs, carbs and more carbs! read more

Total sad face on this one because we really wanted to love the $45 chocolate cake we bought for our friend's birthday party :( We will definitely return to Purebread for daily pastries and delicious bits, which are their specialty. The icing is all sweet and almost no chocolate, the 4 strawberries on top were just average, and the cake itself, had a dry texture that was at best, just okay. All in all, a bit embarrassing when we bragged about this wonderful cake we were about to share. Our feedback: when you want 10 slices of chocolate cake for $45, spend it elsewhere. When you want a wonderful slice of something for $4.50, go to Purebread and have a blast! read more
