Pure Barre Kingstowne is an amazing place in every way. The workout is a fully body one to target muscles that have been asleep for years. The instructors are incredibly helpful and will help you constantly perfect your form. The community is like no either, everyone is very welcoming and supportive. My doctor recommended I find a low impact exercise that would improve my hip flexibility and strength. I took advantage of a free trial with my first class in 2019 and now I've been to 900+ classes. I've never stuck with any gym memberships/routine. It was a toss up between PBK and OT when I was looking for something new back in 2020. I joined the Lorton PB studio right as COVID was beginning. The studio has been great at providing socially distanced workouts, sanitizing supplies, an excellent cleaning protocol in between classes and users, and an unwavering commitment to mask use (all instructors wear them all the time). Additionally, this studio partners with other studios in the region to offer a TON of classes online, which are included with your membership. Basically, there's no reason not to join and lose that quarantine-15....The Lorton studio has great instructors, who are always willing to lend a hand or answer questions. Had my first experience with barre workout today at Pure Barre Kingstowne. I've got friends who have been doing this for awhile now and it was about time I gave it a shot! I have to say, I'm super out of shape and not very athletic. So I'm the epitome of beginner here. I felt really comfortable and at ease with Jenna, who explained some vocabulary and basic technique before class started. Also, even though there were some ladies totally rockin' it in there, I never felt judged or discouraged. Usually, I'll get to a point in a class where I just want to give up, but I never felt like that today. Don't get me wrong, it was challenging as all get out and I totally eased off on some of the moves...but it stayed positive the whole time. Giving up just never crossed my mind. If you've been on the fence about coming to Pure Barre, just give it a shot. No one's there to judge you and if you're worried about being a beginner, don't worry - I'm there too :). And in case you're worried about what to wear...just some leggings that are long (below the knee at least) and a somewhat-fitted workout tank or tee. Nothing baggy. And bring socks! Or buy them there! Just sign up for a class already! (Only reserving the last star until I've had some time with them under my belt and get to try classes with different instructors! Like many, I was never a dancer or dance involved of any kind, nor did I used to be a ballerina. I don't even really get into yoga (unless it involves sleeping on the floor and involves essential oils being rubbed into my head) That's how anti-fad workout I am. As a 5'2 female at 150lbs lifting weights was just making me wider and stockier. Sound familiar? Tired of feeling like Rhonda Rousey in the bedroom, I desired to lean. So the journey began. But after many attempts to get myself back into shape with cycling, yoga, P90x, kickboxing. I just kept re-injuring myself and I was exhausted. all. the. time. After being diagnosed with low cortisol/adrenal fatigue, any kind of intense cardio with jumping, kicking, running, cycling, etc WAS OUT. After much resistance I finally decided to try the Intro month. Like any first timer, I thought to myself, "These people are insane to want to do these moves in these small pulsating motions! This is torture!" I decided to continue give it the good old college try and continue my month. I went 3x a week, walked 10-12k steps each day in the bright sunshine, and did combo it with the weight watchers freestyle app because tracking macros is a pain in the ass. The results were pretty awesome. My fit yoga friend saw me a several weeks later and said, " You look smaller, what are you doing?" I suggest barre to anyone, particularly former athletes who are looking for an intense workout without the same wear/tear on the joints and with the same mental engagement of a intense workout. There are lots of different body types in class so no need to feel self-conscious. The gals with the 'ballerina' build will be dripping sweat right there with you! And no class is ever the same. Also the music selection is pretty great and you can hear the instructor. The only suggestion I would make to first timers is to give yourself a day of rest in between each class and consume protein shakes afterward to combat muscle soreness. I also guarantee that you will "feel it" when you walk up the stairs the next day (in a good way!) read more

Since I moved to the Kingstowne area, I have been searching for a boutique gym that's near my apartment. Pure Barre fit the bill perfectly. They offer tons of classes throughout the day - super early morning to quite late in the evening. The studio it self is adorably decorated and impeccably clean. A very nice receptionist greeted me and I took a few minutes to fill out some paperwork. All newcomers should get to the studio about 15 minutes early to sign some forms and get a feel for what the studio looks like and the kinds of moves to expect. Each class is about 55-minutes long and targets the entire body. The move are very ballet, yoga, Pilates-ish, which is great for those days you want a break from cardio or pure strength training. There is a lot of Pure Barre vocab that instructors like to use when teaching class; I was a little lost, but don't let that stop you from giving it a try. The instructors are super hands-on and like to adjust you so that your form is always on point. I've added Pure Barre to my workout regimen and I'm excited to get more proficient in the coming weeks! - Plentiful parking! - Cubbies to store your bags/shoes. - It seems as though wearing leggings is encouraged over shorts. read more

My next class will be my 100th. I have to admit when I started 7 months ago, I never thought I'd stick with it. I've never worked out and I have never been athletic. Before starting at Pure Barre Kingstown I was feeling achy and lazy all the time. The Facebook ad kept popping up and my husband wanted to know what to get me for Christmas so I asked for a trial. That's how it started and now I lost 20 pounds and got my energy back. At 56 I am stronger than ever thanks to PBK. Every single class is unique and each instructor is dedicated and conscientious. It doesn't matter if you're young or old, weak or strong, heavy or trim, anyone can benefit from PBK. Everything about PBK is great! They offer a variety of class times so it's easy to find one to fit your schedule. The teachers are all super fantastic and they each has a different style so you're never getting the exact same workout twice. They're also extremely friendly and energetic and always happy to answer questions. I didn't expect to make it back here but Jenna (the owner) truly understands customer service. I had an issue with booking classes and when my package expired, another employee told me it couldn't be extended. When Jenna found out, she went above and beyond to correct the issue and how we were treated from a customer service standpoint which I really appreciated. That's supposed to be the point of yelp, to filter out the bad and help other businesses step their game up and they really did. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place! I just finished my second class with Elise and I feel great. Everyone there is super encouraging. My experience so far hasn't been anything short than amazing! I went into Pure Barre on Monday to ask some questions and hoping to sign up for a class or take advantage of their one week "free" trail. The facility was clean, organized and surrounded by nice-friendly individuals. Well today was my first class, and although I jumped right into the "intermediate" class, by accident, (fast pace) I must say it was great. First let me say that although I've had small interaction with the other instructors/ staff- and they were super nice, Sarah made me want to join ,when she first introduced herself to me as one of the instructors. Her personality is awesome and she's so sweet and motivating! Working out is already hard and with the motivation and kindness that this group offers, makes signing up so easy. The ladies that clearly have been going here a while were also nice. They gave props to myself and another lady, who's first day was today as well. They offer an intro class (which I should have taken). Sarah was my first instructor and although this was a fast paced class, she made sure to check on me (and the other ladies working out as well), corrected my stance if I was off and kept telling me how good I was doing (even if I wasn't)- that kept me from walking out :). It's a good workout and they target all areas and trust, you will be sore after your first workout (I made sure to ice because I'm always sore the next day)! I would definitely recommend this location. They book their classes pretty quickly so I would definitely try to book in advance and possibly finding a backup location when you can't get any classes here when you want. I am joining this week! P.s be sure if you sign up for classes online that it's the right location. Although, this is in Alexandria it's the Kingstown location- I selected Alexandria which was the Old Town location (they have a few locations in Alexandria). read more

I've been a regular & devoted fan of PBK since they opened in March 2016. The classes are fun, the workout is fantastic and I can't say enough good things about this studio. The only downside is the quick 10-minute turnaround between classes, so it can often feel rushed to get a class out and the next class in (in the lobby area where you store your things, in the actual studio itself and in the parking lot). read more

Pure Barre Kingstowne is great! All the instructors are so friendly and know your name after only 1 time of meeting you. They all really care that you're doing each exercise/pose the correct way and help reposition you. They are welcoming and encouraging! I'm so glad I signed up for Pure Barre Kingstowne. Barre is different than any other exercise I've ever done before and some of the exercises are very difficult, so it helps that all the instructors are so open to helping you. They have also been flexible when I had to change a class time due to traffic and cancel last minute due to an emergency...usually it would be a charge of $15, but b/c I called and explained, they were understanding. I just started a few days ago and have had an excellent experience so far. The owner Jenna is super nice and took the time to explain the classes and everything to me. I actually find the prices to be reasonable especially the great deals they have going on when you sign up or want to try out classes. All the girls in the class and the instructors are very friendly and it's a great atmosphere. I'm also decently in shape and thought the classes might be too easy. I was so wrong! It is very challenging and works muscles you dont typically workout in the gym. read more

UPDATE 2018 I still love this studio! It has plenty of parking, it is clean, and the staff is AMAZING! As I said in my prior review, I had not had any regular, structured form of exercise for about 20 years. I came to Pure Barre Kingstowne (PBK) because I liked the idea of small structured movements at low impact. I am not a ballerina or dancer in any previous life, but this workout spoke to me, and still does! I am challenged every time I walk through the PBK doors, but I keep coming back to get every move better. As I type this, my abs ache. But I know that I worked hard to make it stronger than my last class. Each class (classic) is structured the same way: warmup, thighs, seat, abs, and cool down--all done with small isometric movements (about an inch). The Empower classes are roughly the same but are are aimed to get your geart rate up, so bigger movements and a bit more impact. It takes a few classes to get used to the pace, and the lingo but the staff is so wonderful that they will help you. For the 3rd time in this review I am celebrating the staff---because they deserve it! Everyone of them is encouraging and challenging. Each one is different, but they all strive to make you better and stronger. The owner of PBK has (Jenna McGill) has fostered an amazing community with her staff. From the barre-tenders to the instructors. This sense of community has grown to the clients who come and are part of PBK. There are women of every shape, size, age, and background who come day in and day out and they are all supportive of one another. They are truly excited when someone hits a milestone--whether that be my first full body pushup, or someone's 800th class! I strongly recommend coming by for a class at PBK, you won't regret it. Nice new/clean facility, staff and instructors are nice and plenty of classes to choose from all through the week. The app makes it easy to sign up for class and now it even gives you a text notification if you are bumped up into a class from the waitlist which is a huge plus. My only "complaint" is that they stock really cut athleisure clothing and accessories in the lobby boutique and I end up spending extra money :) read more

The staff is the MOST helpful, the instructors are fabulous, motivating, and patient (when your shaking is extreme enough to cause an earthquake.) Pure Barre is amazing. The atmosphere, the instructors I love it all. Everyone is so nice and friendly. Super helpful for a novice like me. I am in no way an active or physical person. I've just given birth to my second child and couldn't stand to see myself in the mirror. Not to mention the just the idea of having to chase 2 boys around was exhausting to me. I needed to change something and get my self in shape. If not just for myself but to be better for my boys. I was always very curious about taking this class. I have been contemplating it for a long time now so I finally just signed up for a class to try it out. Oh man did that first class get me. Amy helped me go over my options and since I had never taken any classes and lived nearby we signed me up for the intro month so i could try out the classes and see which ones would fit my schedule best. I'm in week 3 now and I'm doing much better. Each class is still super challenging still and I still find myself list here and there but the instructors are pretty good about guiding me along or correcting my form. I can't really see much of a change in my body yet but I do feel it and I feel myself slowly getting more energy through out the day. I think I've go finally found a work out I can continue doing. At $25 a class it is a little pricey but there are different class bundle packages that you can sign up for that are a little cheaper. Also once you sign up for a class if you decide to cancel you need to do it 8 hours in advance or they charge you a few. I find this actually makes me go to class and stick it out even more. read more

I've been going to pure barre classes on and off for the last six months and absolutely love the challenging, high-energy workouts that aim to target your thighs, glutes, and core, while also strengthening and sculpting your arms and shoulders. I had my first class at the Kingstowne location and was extremely pleased with not only my workout, but the overall environment. I bought the pre-opening special and then nearly let it expire, but so glad I didn't! The retail space and studio are larger than some of Pure Barre studios closer to DC which is kind of nice because I don't think the classes are any larger. It's especially nice in Platform classes because we were able to do significant portions of the class in the center of the room, and I felt that really stepped up the Platform cardio intensity a notch. All of the teachers were friendly and good communicators but I especially liked Kerrey's classes--they tended to be hard and her no-nonsense, organized classes felt very satisfying. The studio is in the ground floor of an office building, so there is plenty of free parking. They use eco-friendly essential oils and washcloths to clean the equipment, which I appreciate. And, they have a customer loyalty program if you provide feedback on classes through which you can earn all kinds of stuff, including a free intensive if you play your cards right. Overall, I would recommend this location and have had a positive experience here. read more

The owner, Jenna, is the most lovable and sweetest person you'll ever meet. All the instructors will challenge you, make you laugh, and before you know it you'll find yourself part of this beautiful studio's family. Whether you are looking to zip in and out for a fast workout or looking to participate in a team challenge PBK has something for everyone. Classes will fly by and you'll quickly see results if you make it part of your schedule. In this area, it's unusual for a studio to know your name or even your face. At PBK the staff will learn your name and welcome you as if you were a founding member. I have nothing negative to say about this little slice of hometown feeling in big city living. Classes fill up fast, but waitlists move so be patient. I consider this as a good thing-a testament to how well PBK works! People are excited to go back... it works. I am an early bird, the morning classes are so much fun. It may still be dark outside but the instructors are full of energy and they will push you as if the sun had been up for hours. Jenna and her team have done an incredible job! If you have ever had an interest in barre or even looking for a place to meet girlfriends (it's so hard in this area!) I encourage you to try PBK. Highly recommend it! As someone that's had multiple hip surgeries, this class has a great balance of stretching, lifting, toning and burning. I went from being not able to touch my toes to building strength and flexibility. It's extremely challenging and you need to give it a month or so before it gets more routine. Don't give up.
