Since then I've taken classes with 4 different instructors so far and all have been friendly and helpful. They encourage you to be successful at your own level and strive for more, but there is no pushing and modifications are offered to accommodate different strengths and medical concerns. Aside from classes being varied and enjoyable, I love that the studio is spotless and welcoming with a small seating area and coffee bar for a chat after class. The bathroom facilities are equally clean and thought was even put into the tiniest details such a placing a small bowl of hair ties on the counter for those days when you forget or need an extra. Then Susan opened Core Barre, and I joined, and it has been the best experience ever. The instructors Susan, Donna, Sarah, and now Liz are motivating, kind, and very tuned in to where you are at in your work out. There is a very warm accepting vibe, and the competition aspect is gone, so you can truly get the work out you need. I vote for Core Barre as the best place around not only for the expertise in fitness they have to offer, but the family friendly feel Susan and her instructors give to the place each and every time you go.

A few years ago, she went out on her own with a boutique gym in Old Saybrook specializing in Pilates. I've tried the hoo-hoo-ha-ha many times and I know the workout has its diehard devotees, but it's simply not my thing. However, Barre is, and you can find it at Lisa's sweet gym. There's an air of Cheers to the place, as everyone in the small class I sampled seemed to be fast friends, and definitely on a first name basis. I like the atmosphere of inclusiveness that Lisa provides, and the workout with plenty of plies, squatting, strengthening and stretching was suited to all levels (which were all represented, too). Fab, too, was her 70's soul soundtrack that brought me right back to high school and made the harder exercises easier to bear. The hour flew by. Non-ballet dancers welcome. And p.s. Pilates practitioners will love it here.

Extremely knowledgeable instructors keep everyone motivated to work out with fun music and frequent routine changes. Class pace is quick and energizing, with lots of cardio, unlike some barre classes I've tried where you just ambiguously tuck your pelvis for a while. The studio has a cozy feel and is also a really functional space that doesn't get overcrowded because advance booking is required. Classes are definitely challenging (esp barre power) but the instructors always give examples of how to modify so that people of all fitness levels can succeed. Two years later, and I still love Barre 44. The new studio space is super-airy and light, but still manages to feel cozy and inviting. With the recently-added trampoline cardio class, good luck getting rid of me!
