The process went smoothly and before we knew it we were the happy adoptive parents for a newly spayed, microchipped, immunized and ready to go. A 3 - 5 year old little doggo to join our family for many years to come and be a playful companion for our 12 year old son for a $250 adoption fee? Sweet! She's an absolute doll but I just knew something wasn't right. I took her to the vet that I have been going to since 2004 and he came back in the room with a sad look on his face and told me that although her adoption papers say she is young, they really estimate that she is closer to 9 or 10 years old. Since she is older he is concerned that her knees are not very stable and doesn't want her running around too much or going up and down the stairs a lot! Needs a full dental cleaning which will also require lab work for the sedation, had to have her anal glands cleaned out, etc. Not to mention I have a WHOLE HOUSE FULL OF STAIRS! Yes, that cost a lot of money and no I don't have a problem paying for it. The problem that I have is that my son was so excited to get an energetic playmate but now we have to be extremely cautious for her joints and well being because we unknowingly adopted a senior dog and not a 3 - 5 year old like we were lead to believe. My son cried all day when I broke the news to him and we have to carry her up and down the stairs now or else risk her having to have knee replacement surgery. She's a good girl, but boy were we mislead! Most places will let you adopt a senior dog for a low price but we paid a full adoption fee for a dog with health issues that were not divulged to us in the beginning. Be sure you know what you're getting yourself into before adopting from these people!!

After talking to several staff members, at different times, I felt reassured that Delta Airlines handled many pups to Philadelphia Airport and that they are handled with VIP care. So, I decided my obsession out weighed my fears for a Schnauzer puppy . I must say that Lexi arrived happy, energetic and full of love. As promised on their website, they called a few days to make sure Lexi was doing well and to see if I had any questions or concerns. My vet said she was so healthy she did not need any of the medications she came with as a precaution.

My experience with Desert Danes left me feeling very disappointed, mainly due to the lack of communication and professionalism. I have included screenshots of all conversations from start to finish. Their website comes across very legit so I was excited that there was a breeder in town with what felt like perfect timing since I lost my Great Dane 5 months ago. From the start of our interaction I got a weird feeling. I sent a text introducing myself and stating why I was texting and I got the dry response, "okay" followed with more dry responses and blurry pictures where you couldn't even see the dogs up close after asking to see them and how old. This made it difficult to assess their condition which is I asked to meet them. In the pictures they provided, the puppies are eating next to a pile of feces, which is concerning to me as that's unsanitary. I understand that puppies have accidents but this just shows me the lack of attention to detail on top of the poor communication. I was compliant with wherever they wanted to meet and tried to set multiple meetings days in advance only to have to text them multiple times asking for details on times due to receiving no response. Then they brought up sugar gliders and how they got robbed and said they got confused because they're texting multiple people which is totally fine, but after having multiple weird responses or complete lack of responses, I finally just stopped responding after a last attempt to make an appointment. I was unable to make the time they suggested in the last text and I was no longer willing to go back and forth again just to not get a response unless multiple texts were sent from my end. I wanted to share my experience considering I hadn't had the opportunity to communicate with them about my needs or expectations and was told I wasn't a good fit. They may be reputable and just be terrible communicators but I'm not interested in giving money to terrible communicators or people that give off the impression that they do not care as much as they should, so either way I'm out.

I was told on 23 NOV 2021 by the foster mom "I sent all your texts to the operator of the rescue I foster for and she's very happy with everything your doing to ensure Avalanche's arrival. Her only concern is if for whatever reason it doesn't work out and we have to come get him your all the way in Georgia and not that we're saying it won't work we just have to think of every possible scenario for Avalanche's safety is all. But you seem sincere and I've been talking to her about it." I then told the foster mom I would sign whatever needed that would require me to return him to Nevada. The foster mom and I then messaged everyday. I got all the things he would need and want. I got the food he was on, his favorite treats, toys, brush, leashes, collar, harness, toothbrush, shampoo, seat belt for his harness, bed, crate etc. I scheduled a vet appointment and two daycare evaluations locally as well as to meet with a professional trainer. Then on 06 DEC I was emailed that I cannot adopt him as I live out of state and that's their policy. This was the first I was told that policy. I've since offered to fly out there (I was going to have a rescue group transport him for me which I filled out all that paperwork) and rent a car and drive back myself (2,000 miles). I offered to do a FaceTime and have any other person they trusted that was local (from another rescue organization) to see my home as they require a home inspection. Now they are messaging me telling me "Please reach out to those rescues who will make exceptions. We will not make the exception. Thank you. We will no longer entertain ANY messages or emails from you as we have been clear on our end". I feel betrayed as I couldn't sleep the night they told me. I kept looking at everything I had ready for him and crying. I thought rescuing an animal was the right thing to do and instead I'm left with a broken heart. It's not okay what they did to me.

Do you own a pup from this breeder? Is anyone's pup from this breeder had or having seizures? Please contact me to share information. I am writing a review for two reasons. First because it is highly likely that other pups from this breeder are having the same health issues as mine and I'd like to share information. Second, because big picture - a lot of things surrounding this breeder appear worthy of a review. Here is our story - as brief as I can make it for this platform: We had inquired about local breeders and it turned out #hughesfamilylabradors was right around the corner from my house. I had multiple conversations with Amber Hughes and absolutely loved her energy and passion for breeding dogs. In 2020 we picked out a chocolate boy to be a companion to our then 2 year old chocolate female, we picked her up in California. We brought home our sweet sweet boy home and named him Chief. Our sweet loving empathy pup has had some challenges that recently escalated to severe. Turns out he had giardia as a pup and we didn't have a clue. I thought he was just skinny like his grandsire. He had of/off bouts of diarrhea with some vomiting from time to time. We got a diagnosis of giardia when he was about 5-6 months old when in spite of his veracious appetite he wouldn't put on weight. Vet tested and confirmed giardia. We did we completed the medication protocols and went back to normal fun lab life. Well, sort of. He would go through these cycles of diarrhea and some times vomiting, run back to vet, do fecal test, no parasites' and can't find out why but more meds like antacids, etc... He had some soft poops but pumpkin and good food kept that somewhat under control. My female lab has never caught it. Vet said once pup gets giardia they always show traces in fecal testing, and we test his poop immediately every time we had to return to the vet for the diarrhea and/or vomiting. Fast forward to May 2023. Chief had a terrible bout of diarrhea but this time vomited blood. Immediately off to Vet. More tests, more meds, no cause to be identified. Meds to coat his tummy before eating, new food. On May 21st he had a grand mal seizure. Terrified thinking he was dying at my feet, we rushed off to ER. Plethora of testing and xrays - no cause was identified. His testing says he had some inflammation but xrays showed he had a terrible bout of diarrhea coming but otherwise healthy. WTH? Why would he have a seizure out of no where? Diagnosis is that it must be a hereditary, in his DNA. I have been in crazy research/detective mode. First thing I tried to do is reach out to #hughesfamilylabradors. I still love Amber but now that I've been researching I'm not sure what to think! My heart is broken because my boy Chief needs help and we need to find out why this is happening but I can't ask #hughesfamilylabradors because her husband announced on FB that Amber passed away December 15, 2022, or so it was posted. The really bizarre thing is, outside of social media posting of her passing there was not funeral announcement or information I could find. I tried to reach out to her husband many times asking if there was any services but got no reply. Again, fast forward to today. I've reached out via social media, the phone number's VM is full, emailed, emailed on their active website and have received ZERO response. I looked up the AKC information on Chief's sire and dam only to see the dogs names with no DNA information or health information. I have the name but not the information on Chief's registered DAM Koda The Great Black Bear but can't locate Jessica Carter. Now I see a posts that make me question if these health issues in my boy is only him or are there others from this breeder. I don't want to think the worst! I'm desperate to know if any other #hughesfamilylabrardor puppies have had conditions like Chief? It seems hard to believe he is the only dog from their breeding business that has seizures. And if anyone knows who Jessica Carter, the registered owner of Koda the Great Black Bear, Chief's dam, PLEASE CONTACT ME! My heart is broken that Amber has passed. I really liked her and hope all of this is just a bad coincidence!!!
