Found this hidden gem while searching for dinner before a Richmond Broadway show at the Altria Theater (it's a 5-minute walk from the venue). This place has a genuine wood-fired hearth oven and makes a decent Neapolitan pizza (they even use buffalo milk mozzarella!). My only complaint was that the oven was running a little cool as the bottoms of my pizzas were not charred as would normally be expected. But, the cornicione (outer edge) was perfectly charred with some leoparding visible (which is a good thing). The red sauce was simple and had a good flavor. My Margherita DOC was very good, but needed a tad more fresh basil on it. The restaurant itself is pretty basic, you order and pay at the register and they bring your food to the table. They do (thankfully) have a basic beer and wine list. All in all, my wife and I will be returning here before each Broadway show. I just hope the oven is up to proper temperature next time as this could easily turn into my favorite pizzeria in Richmond (yes, I'm a pizza snob and run a pizzamaking website lol). read more

I went to get a vegan pizza under the assumption the vegan cheese could be subbed for reg cheese which is not the case. The only vegan pizza they offer right now is the margherita pizza but other toppings can be added for an additional charge. That option was a little pricey for me so I got the plain margherita. I was not disappointed! It tasted great! My friend had a side salad so I sprinkled some of the arugula and olives on top. ZING! I alternate between craving pizza or burgers at all times, and when it is pizza, it's Pupatella. They actually have great salads too if you don't want pizza for some weird reason. I've had most of them, and the pepperoni is a perfect execution of a classic. The mimosa pizza is what keeps me coming back though, and I top it with ranch because I'm the queen of creamy. So, when you go to write a review of a place, Yelp helps you out by identifying 2 stars as "Meh. I've experienced better," while 3 stars is "A-OK," 4 stars is "Yay! I'm a fan," etc. Going by those criteria, Pupatella is deserving of 2-stars. Sure, I could up the rating to 3 stars were I one of those Yelpers who reviews a dining experience in terms of features beyond the food itself, such as employees (they all seem to be friendly, hard-working, decent people) or ambiance (fine though not intimate enough for, say, a date night). But, alas, I am not one of those Yelpers. The 2 stars I'm giving Pupatella is strictly based on my experience of their food. Both margherita pizzas---the $10 "classica DOC" and the $13 "margherita DOC"--were rather bland. Texture was as it should have been for Neopolitan pizza, thanks in large part to their brick oven. And all the traditional ingredients were put to use. Yet somehow, despite all this (and even given the fact that they use San Marzano tomatoes for their sauce!), there was almost none of the flavor I'm used to expecting in a Neopolitan. Both pizzas were undeniably, unfortunately, disappointingly bland. What a let down read more

I tried this restaurant for the first time this past Saturday for lunch. It was very convenient to park in their parking lot beside the restaurant (which was a nice perk to parking on the street). The restaurant functions like a fast casual restaurant but with high quality food. You order at the counter and pay before receiving your food and then they will bring it out to your table. For an app we had the fried mozzarella balls. While they were delicious, I agree with a prior review in that I was left wanting more due to the size. I had the Diavola pizza while my husband had the ham and mushroom. Mine was delicious - spicy but not too spicy. Overall it was a great experience. I will be back to try the Nutella pizza! read more

One of the top places to eat in richmond and specially around VCU. The employees are so nice and quick. Went to try this place after my friend said there was a new pizza place that popped up. Food - Honestly, the only thing good about this place is their tomato sauce. Other than that, I am disappointed in the fact that they only offer 1 size (which is in between a small and a medium, at 11") and that it is pretty overpriced (about $13-$14). I didn't like the fact that when I chose a create your own, they charged me to put regular cheese on the pizza. It would make more sense to make the regular cheese free and the specialty cheeses additional price...otherwise if you don't pay for the normal cheese, it would have just been the dough and tomato sauce. The most heinous thing of all, was the fact that the pizza was so soggy, I had to use 2 hands to eat one slice because the 90% of the pizza was falling apart. I'm not sure if they just undercooked it this time or if it's like this normally but regardless, it was disgusting. Only reason I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 is for the tomato sauce and the fact that they have a spinach leaves option as a topping.
