Ribs and spicy Mac with loaded potato
    Cindy N.

First visit to Tombstone back in July! We tried the spicy Mac and cheese and ribs at Puny John's and it did not disappoint! The ribs were smoky in flavor and we dipped it in different sauces. The spicy mac and cheese was also flavorful! Service was great and there are many tables with fans to help cool down.

Hubby and I stopped in Tombstone for lunch on our way to Bisbee. Because we had our dogs with us we stopped here for lunch and enjoyed their patio seating. Food was amazing, drinks were great and they gave us water for our pups. Half rack of ribs, Mac and cheese, baked beans, potato salad such amazing sides. Highly recommend.

Puny John's BBQ was busy, but you didn't have you to wait to be seated like the many other restaurants around Tombstone. Plus, BBQ always is a good idea, right? However, I found the food to be A-OK. While in Tombstone we were looking for a place to get lunch and stumbled upon Puny John's BBQ, which was off the main drag. The place was super busy, with nearly every table taken. You order at the counter and are handed a number, which indicates to the employee which table to deliver your food. It's a casual spot. My partner and I shared the full rack of ribs meal, which came with two sides. It was more than enough food for us. For BBQ sauces, you can choose among the different sauces, including one that was prickly pear flavored. I thought the ribs were fine. They weren't the tastiest, as the texture was super soft, like they had been cooked in a slow cooker all day. It resembled pulled pork, but on a bone. I like tender, but what you normally get from ribs is a meaty, smoky flavor to it. However, it just tasted too soft to me. It was also heavily seasoned, so didn't think BBQ sauce was needed. The sides were good. We ordered green beans and mac and cheese, and the mac and cheese had a wonderful spice to it and liked that the green beans were cooked with pork, so you got a lot of that flavor with. I was liking the sides more than the meat, which I think tells you what you need to know about this BBQ spot.

Cheese burger, brisket sandwich combo and a couple of their house made bbq sauces

My main complaint about this place is the prices. The fact that they charge an extra $2 for lettuce, onion, tomatoes and pickles for a sandwich or hamburger is crazy, especially because a standalone burger is roughly $12. Granted it says it's 1/2 pound but come on! The restaurant seemed pretty clean but rather generic in decor. Service was decent but far from friendly and they brought out my burger without bacon when I know that's what was ordered but had no way to prove it as the receipt doesn't give details of the order. We had to go get the ketchup packets (yes packets) from the front where you order. The burger had no condiments and while smoky it was dry. My husband liked his brisket sandwich but the fries were bland. At $36 bucks for a burger, sandwich combo (one side one drink) and a bottle of water, I don't think it's worth it.

Great food if you're looking for lunch or dinner without a fuss. Order at the counter, and they deliver. Pulled pork was tender, not fatty at all. Baked potato was good/split half was a good portion as they are big potatoes! Service was good, self serve sauces and condiments. Nothing fancy- just good food!

    All the sauces were amazing!

I ordered the 1/2 loaded potato with brisket. The brisket was very watery and shredded. I ended up just pushing everything on top aside and eating the potato only. We came because a person said it was pet friendly but your pet has to be enclosed. We had a stroller but had to keep it zipped up. There's a patio but no shade if we didn't have the stroller. Homemade bbq sauces, lemonade, tea and Mac and cheese were good! Check in and get the $10 off Yelp coupon!!

We were referred by a gunslinger riding his scooter to stop there for luchboy was he right!! The ribs were amazing & the choice of sides were great!! Margaritas were very tasty too! We will definitely be back when in the area!!

The Puny Pie (beans, mac and cheese and a sneeze of brisket)

My husband chose this restaurant, based on the smell of smoked meat and some of his quick Google-related research. We were still alone at this time, and figured we could sit down to a quick and filling meal before my family started rolling in. You order at the counter, then find a table in either the long dining room, or on the patio. It was a bit too frigid for outdoor dining, so we sat at one of the smaller indoor tables, next to a window. I went with the Puny Pie (baked beans topped with mac and cheese topped with brisket), and my husband - for some crazy reason - went with the Nacho Dog (a hot dog with cheese sauce). I definitely made the better food decision. The Puny Pie was good, but not worth the $10 price tag. It was definitely more baked beans and mac and cheese than brisket, but what brisket I had was good. It wasn't overly filling, which was fine for me that day. My husband's Nacho Dog was a joke, really. By the time it came to our table, it looked like his hot dog was covered with a sheet of yellow plastic. It comes with a side; he chose the mac and cheese. A hot dog and a small scoop of mac and cheese set us back $11. SO not worth it. My family started rolling in about the time I was halfway through my bowl of beans. The staff did a good job of managing two groups coming in at different times and descending on where we were sitting (instead of ordering right away). We were a group of 13 by the time the dust settled. At any rate, this place is overpriced for what you get, but I guess that's to be expected for a tourist-trap like Tombstone. We wouldn't go back.

This little gem has out standing food and service. The chicken is tender and well seasoned. The brisket is outstanding moist and the flavor profile is perfect . famous motto: "Anyone can cook." But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Puny john's, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest BBQ in Tombstone . I will be returning here soon, hungry for more. Chef G

Order and pay your food inside

Found this place through Yelp, very curious to try their food. I had pulled chicken since I don't eat much red meat, but my husband & son had the pulled pork and my niece had the vegetarian hotdog. We all agreed that their food is average for our tastes. Extra sauce for 50 cents each, interesting. You pick your own table outdoor or indoor and order and pay your food inside then they'll bring your food to your table. You clean your own table afterwards ( not sure is it because of the Covid or just the restaurant rules).

Between the live music and the old historic vibe, I think it's one of the coolest experiences in town! The history behind the place is also really interesting. It's the second-oldest restaurant in Arizona and opened in 1880. The building used to be the Grand Hotel before it burned down in 1882 & was rebuilt, and there's a lot of history connected to it. The food isn't luxury dining, but I've never been disappointed with a burger or sandwich with some onion rings (really tasty btw). My girlfriend also loves the Macho Nachos. Even on a Tuesday afternoon in mid-April, this joint was bustling with live music, servers rushing about in their period costumes, and the chatter of happy patrons enjoying themselves and taking it all in. Whether a lover of frontier history, western cinema, or just plain ol' drinking in a genuine saloon, Big Nose Kate's screams, "WELCOME TO THE TOWN TOO TOUGH TO DIE!" Upon entering, our party was seated in a raised section above the main floor near the front windows. It was an excellent spot to see all the action (including a monitor playing the movie Tombstone, BTW) as we perused the menu of appetizers, entrees, and libations. The selection of specialty drinks was impressive, though I opted for a simple "Big Ass" draft pilsner (flavorful and locally brewed). My wife did order a Cowboy Sangria - and it appears wimpy drinks "don't go around here, Law Dog," because she thought it was good but a bit too strong. I actually had to finish it for her. (Such a chivalrous sacrifice!) But don't assume that Kate's is just a drinking establishment; there's quite a variety of eats, as well. Good-sized, tasty looking burgers and sandwiches passed by our table, which were tempting; however, not being overly hungry, we decided to sample a few of their appetizers as we moved on to another round of beers. The Buffalo Wings were good but nothing really special. The Soft Pretzel Basket - actually one HUGE pretzel served with cheese and mustard sauces - was warm, salty, and much bigger than anyone anticipated. It was enjoyed by our entire table. When visiting, don't neglect a trip to the gift shop, which can be accessed from a spiral staircase right in the center of the dining area. Their menu recounts that a part of this underground area was once the abode of the saloon's swamper, and you can even view his living cubby and mining tunnel when below. Of course, there's lots of branded swag available for sale down there, too! Big Nose Kate's Saloon is a must-see stop for Tombstone visitors. Priced aren't exorbitant, portions are generous, and the food and drinks are pretty darned good, as was evident from the satisfied looks of the diners and drinkers around us . You may even be approached by Steve, who offers FREE photos (from your personal camera or phone) with props and piano-top poses - now how can you beat that value? Make it a point to come on in, belly up to the bar, and enjoy the saloon's hospitality.

I'm not sure if the…read moredining experience differs due to the increased weekend crowds, but our weekday visits (yes, plural) were positive. Freshly arrived from checking-in to our nearby hotel and thirsty from the 8-hour drive, our party decided to grab cocktails and a bite to eat somewhere along Allen Street. We quickly realized that most shops and businesses close around 5 o'clock (which was approaching), so choosing the Longhorn, with its extended hours and large menu, was a no-brainer. We started with a couple of Bloody Marys and a blooming onion appetizer. The Marys weren't particularly spicy but were well-made and traditionally garnished. For an extra charge ($5.00, I believe) you could even purchase a souvenir glass. The blooming onion was also prepared well - not greasy - and came with a tasty dipping sauce I also used on other foodstuffs later. For dinner, my wife and I split the Dunkin' Burger (with french fries) while our friends ordered the New York Steak, baked potato, and a salad. I, personally, didn't think the dipping au jus did anything for our burger since the Angus patty was flavorful and the Texas Toast was soft and crunchy, so I opted to spread some of the onion's heretofore mentioned dipping sauce on it, instead. No complaints from our friends on their steak, which was still sizzling upon presentation and came with a large dollop of garlic butter. Do note, the Longhorn charges a plate-splitting fee, but we were informed of this in advance. We waddled out stuffed and satisfied. The following morning, we found that most businesses didn't open until 10 o'clock; so, being early risers, back it was to the Longhorn for breakfast! I was really blown away by the Country Fried Angus Steak and Eggs I ordered. Hefty, thick yet tender, and topped with a rich country gravy, the steak took up the entire plate (leaving room for the eggs only on top of it all). My wife's simple order of French Toast and bacon paled in comparison, though it was equally to her liking. It was a great way to start our long-anticipated day of exploring Tombstone's shops and attractions. The restaurant's decor beckons diners to explore Tombstone's history through the period photographs, artwork, and artifacts that adorn the walls in the two main dining areas. The backlit stained-glass murals are beautiful, casting a golden glow throughout the interior, and the furnishings perfectly reinforce the town's western motif. Another praiseworthy facet of the Longhorn Restaurant is the staff. Our two servers, Melissa for dinner and Shelby for breakfast the following morning, were so sweet. Melissa, learning we had just arrived into town, offered to snap several seated photos of us, and Shelby gave us a variety of suggestions for points of interest, attractions, and events that would be taking place the day we were there. Our sincere appreciation is extended to both these friendly, hardworking ladies! In all, we really enjoyed both our visits to the Longhorn Restaurant. Prices were actually cheaper than what we anticipated in a town relying largely on tourist dollars, the food and service were on point, and the overall vibe fell right in line with what a lover of western history would expect. Thanks to all; we hope to visit you again next trip!

It was worth the wait, and our only regret is that we hadn't prioritized trying it sooner. Everything was magical, from the laid-back, hippie atmosphere of the street it resides on to the experience once inside the establishment. What makes this even more notable, and further enhances the experience, is the lack of similar dining establishments in deep southern Arizona. One can find fine dining in Tucson, over an hour away and far too far for a simple evening out. That's not to say there aren't decent or good restaurants in Cochise County. However, none excel in all aspects of an evening out experience, from greeting to service to the quality of the meal. We had a reservation and were seated immediately at the only table open in the restaurant. That is a plus for their table management. Within two minutes, our waiter appeared with water and bread. Expressing our joy at this proper start to the meal is impossible. In eight years of living in southern Arizona, we have often observed management and wait staff at other establishments taking five minutes or more to arrive at the table. That delay typically foreshadows a lack of basic service that follows. The bread basket featured freshly baked country bread, accompanied by a small plastic ramekin of butter. We would have enjoyed the butter served more elegantly, but that is a minor matter. The bread was excellent. We had heard that the restaurant's appetizers are a highlight and decided to try three: a fresh bacon, apple, arugula, and beet salad, Mussels Meuniere (which were specials), and Arancini. The salad was beautifully composed with just the right amount of dressing to highlight the flavors of the ingredients. The Arancini may have been the best I have ever had. Perfectly fried balls of tender risotto set in a delicious tomato sauce were an unexpected treat. The mussels, unfortunately, were the low point of the meal. Overcooked and rubbery mussels in a tepid sauce that lacked depth and flavor were a major disappointment. Still, that was the only disappointment of the evening and didn't detract from the rest of the meal. We chose two specials for our main course. My wife selected the Salmon topped with a deconstructed Clams Casino. I opted for chicken cutlets topped with eggplant and a dollop of pesto, served in a rich Roman mushroom tomato sauce. The Salmon was incredible. Perfectly cooked and nestled on a plate expertly nappeed with a sublime sauce, it alone excited the palate. But when topped with a well-made clam casino mixture, the dish became an epicurean delight. The chicken was masterfully prepared and was highlighted by the silky-textured eggplant that topped it. The Roman mushroom tomato sauce was well made, my only minor comment being that a different choice of mushrooms might have taken the dish to another level. That said, I would order it again, and probably will if it's on the menu when we return. The dessert selection had me wishing for a larger stomach. Every item on the menu and the specials board looked enticing. We settled on a Basque Cheese cake with blackberries and bananas. We could not have asked for a finer way to end the evening. Perfectly cooked, silky cheesecake in a subtle white sauce and topped with dollops of fresh whipped cream provided just the right amount of sweet and tart to end the meal. Service was good. Ambience here is they have a bar and a high table and chairs and some booth table, it's also good in a group as well.. if you have tried this place you should come and try this place out. Next time this place is my to go place when I'm in town.

It was hard to have a conversation or even hear the server at times because of the live music out in the common area of the space. The music was good, it was just rather loud. Otherwise the vibe of the space if enjoyable with its nostalgia and stuff. In the past I've ranked my experience five stars but I had to bring it down a notch. I had the meatloaf dinner and my husband had Copper(something) pasta dish. Both were lukewarm at best. The flavors were still good but it wasn't a hot dish by any means, and the meatloaf was a bit saltier than I remember. For the pasta dish, the warm bread was hotter than the pasta dish itself. We didn't send it back because I noticed the server was handling dishes returned to the kitchen at the next table, and our dishes weren't cold or anything, they were just warm. I still maintain they absolutely deserve four stars because I suspect the kitchen might have been having an off night and the food was very good (just the meatloaf was a tad salty). We really enjoyed the mushroom appetizer and the beer selection is excellent.
