I've really been looking forward to a Dominican place around the Fort Lee area so that I don't have to drive down to Union City every time my craving hits. The restaurant is located in a strip mall right next the the bridge, so finding it was pretty easy. The size is small with very limited seating. I only saw two small 2 person tables there... So the setup is definitely more of a take out place. All the daily items are on the board, or you can also ask the person behind the counter to show them to you directly from the trays. The printed menu looks to be more family meals and catering oriented. I decided to go with the beef stew since it looked a bit less dry than the chicken stew... I stopped by around dinner time, so the food may have been sitting there for a while... Standard sides would be your usual rice and beans. However, since the weather was hot, I opted for salad instead of rice. They had no issue accommodating. When I started digging into the meal at home, I was honestly a bit disappointed. Don't be fooled by the minimalistic storefront. This place serves up large portions and very tasty food. Someone in our party of four was a bit hesitant experimenting new cuisine but we compromised with him and ordered the fried chicken family meal (option #3). The family meal is advertised to serve 2-3 people but since we had a party of four I also ordered a fish mofongo to ensure we had enough food. The mofongo was made differently from how I usually have it. It is grounded fried plantains that is then reformed back into what looks like an edible pot stuffed with boneless fish on the inside. Previous versions of mofongo that I had would layer stew over the fried plantain instead of stuffing the other ingredients inside. This option worked out well and paired well with the sauce that it came with. The family meal on the other hand is a whole different beast. Our meal which only cost $20 was such a great value. It came with sides of your choice of beans, rice, and plantains. The boneless fried chicken was absolutely delectable. Including the sides that we got, we were all filled beyond reason and still had leftovers. Even though this place is a bit small for a sit-down meal, the service was five stars. Went for Lunch Food - 5/5. The restaurant is new so don't follow their printout menu yet. The prices are different but the daily special remains the same so I had their Sunday Sancocho. It is a very flavorful broth soup with beef short ribs, pork spare ribs, yuca and plantains served with (buttered) white rice. The meats are tender from hours of slow cooking and the starch, although a bit foreign from the usual potato, are soft and delicious. Avocado is a recommended side (extra) that goes well with the soup and rice combo. Service - 4/5. They provide dine-in service despite being a takeout focused restaurant. They have a small area for dining in and are very accommodating. They were nice enough to recommend I pour the soda into ice and provided it as well. Value - 5/5. It is hard to judge since the menu prices are fluctuating from their printout menu as they are new, but this is nothing to hold against them. So I spent a part of my early childhood growing up in the Heights--as in Washington Heights a.k.a Quisqueya Heights--and that's why I know how Dominican food is supposed to taste like. My best friend growing up was Dominican (shout out to my boy Rafa now living in Texas) and his mom always had something incredible-tasting coming out of the kitchen. That's why I'm very picky with my Dominican food. Unfortunately, I am PICKY with my Dominican food and there's only been a few instances where I actually found something worth it. So, the question now stands, does Punta Cana in Fort Lee measure up? The honest answer may be the star rating that I'm giving this eatery--3.5 stars. Since, Yelp doesn't do half-stars I am more inclined to rate this place down than up. It's certainly more than "A-OK" but it certainly doesn't earn the "Yay! I'm a fan" moniker either. It falls in between a great restaurant and a mediocre one. Now why would I say such an indecisive thing. Well, for one the food that I got from my visit tasted like it came from Latin America. Then why, you ask, would I not rate it high for authenticity. Well, because it didn't really have the distinct flavor that I come to expect from Dominican cuisine. The intangibles that I can't quite describe. It's the balance of salt, tangy, and spice that defines Dominican cuisine. Call it whatever you want; accuse me of not knowing what Dominican food tastes like, but in the end, I know how the authentic dishes that come from this restaurant's namesake is supposed to taste and unfortunately this place just can't compare. There are other restaurants across the bridge that serve up more delicious offerings. Now having said all that, I absolutely would still recommend a stop by this place. I want to reiterate that I still give this place a 3.5-star rating (which if you look at my reviews is the first half-star increment I've ever given because I just couldn't decide in this instance) and the food is nonetheless scrumptious. I'm not sure what they do to their rice, but it is straight up addictive. The oxtail (when they have it) is also satisfyingly delicious. The roast chicken is great too. I would say that about 85% of the time the chicken is great. Sometimes it is a tad dry (but this can be said of most chicken joints). You can tell that everything is fresh and cooked with love. It is super small, they only have two small tables so it is more of a take out spot. They have hot food specials everyday at great prices. I love going on Thursdays because they make my favorite which is albondigas (meatballs). Punta Cana is a cute little place that offers tasty, generously portioned and inexpensive Dominican food in Fort Lee. They have daily specials for lunch and dinner from their ready made lunch counter and you can also order off of their menu. The food is typical Spanish/Caribbean items such as roast pork shoulder, rotisserie chicken, plantains, rice and beans, steak and onions, etc... The one criticism that I have for this restaurant is that things could be run a little better but that's likely due to them being busy and perhaps slightly understaffed. So if you go then you'll have to be patient and may have to take initiative to ask the staff yourself. They are very friendly, polite and accommodating so not a big issue really. read more

I have been here twice now. I love it! If you love rice, the moro rice is awesome. Ts rice and pigeon peas, byt with a bit of flavor. I've had the churrasco twice now, and it's great. Juicy and flavorful. Pollo empanada today was also good. Definitely coming back. I'm not a Dominican food expert, but I do have taste. This is good food. I always enjoy trying new things, especially if it's different from what I'm used to. There's only 2 tables so most likely you will have to takeout, but I live closeby, so this is not an issue for me. I usually never try to leave bad reviews, but I felt compelled to, sadly. Anytime I go to any Dominican, or Cuban restaurant, I always order mofongo. It's one of my favorite dishes ever since is was a little boy, and my philosophy is that if you can't do that correctly you're not worth my time. This among other things came to fruition. The mofongo was bland with a clay-like consistency. It had to be CUT into pieces, which I don't even understand. It literally had no flavor. I don't know how much more I can pummel that fact. I technically ordered the mofongo con camarones (with shrimp). They asked me what sauce I wanted and I asked for the garlic sauce, because it's also one of my favorites (I'm obsessed with garlic). They put the smallest dab of garlic sauce in the entire world. Any saving grace of flavor was succumbed by frugality. The shrimp were OK. That's about all I can say. I paid 13.99 for this plate and was left pretty bitter afterward. Grossly overpriced for such a disappointing meal. My wife ordered pollo al caldero and her daughter just got a cheese empanada. They ended up giving my wife pork (I know, my fault for not checking before we left, but really?) and the empanada was lukewarm, and the cheese was like rubber. Nevertheless, my wife ate the pork, but was still not a fan. mentioning flavor and dryness. The entire order was 28 dollars and I wish I could take all of my money back and go to McDonald's. Awesome food! They know how to cook meat. Period! But just be careful. You can gain some weight from eating their food because they give so much food for a quite a reasonable price. You are going to finish the food even though you are full. Their chicken soup is probably the best chicken soup I've ever had. Their meat ball has no bread in it like Italian meat balls. Very meaty and very good. Their oxtail is very good. I'd love to find out their recipe. Pig feet, if you are into such dish, is lip smacking good. So much collagen and very subtle flavor. Beef rib is another meat dish that blows your mind. Try not to go there for lunch everyday like I did for more than 2 months. I gained 5 pounds. :-) read more

Visited Punta Cana for the first time today during "lunch rush hour", and it was exactly what I was looking for. I had their lunch special with Moro Negro, Pernil, and a Country Club Fresa on the side. Everything tasted absolutely fresh and authentic. The staff was very friendly and efficient. I witnessed them with other customers and really enjoyed watching them accommodate "Non Spanish Speakers" or anyone who didn't really know how and what to order from their menu. As a fellow Dominican, I can honestly say many Dominican places aren't as accommodating in helping their customers, and most of the time don't even speak English. You usually are expected to know what you want and what you are looking at. I only rated 4/5 stars because there seem to be more than a few menu options that they were out of. Due to reading their Daily Specials beforehand I had hoped they would have more available. The chicken wasnt bad, but not enough to make up for the small portion of protein. The rice and beans were good. It came with a small small side salad. That's it. The menu said 8 something so I asked the person at the counter if 8something was the price for the special. She said yes and prepared my order. Just as I handed her my card to pay, she tells me that she price hadnt been changed since lunch and the price is 10.70. Mind you this is at 9pm, and ask I had asked if the price was 8 whatever. I would have still ordered from them even if it was $10. But having her pull whatever she tried to pull left a bad taste as I left with my takeout. *This didn't affect my review of the food though. They are new and it shows. The service was very confusing and they asked multiple times what my friends and I ordered. When they handed me my order, I had to remind them that I also had an empanada and a bottle of water. Again, I understand that they are new so I'll give them a break on this point. I got the rotisserie chicken with rice and beans and a chicken empanada. The chicken was dry, the rice and beans were dry, the empanada was dry. If the chicken had been tender, I think the flavor would have been fine though. The salad it comes with was okay, the dressing was light and refreshing. One of the four friends got avocado in her salad while we did not. Not a big deal, but randomly inconsistent. Looking at the current pictures here, I feel like I must have gone to a completely different place. The pictures of the food on yelp looks delicious, which is why we gave this place a go, but unfortunately, this will be my first and last visit. I do give it two stars though for being reasonably priced and the food being OK. Nothing was terrible. I saw this place when I was visiting Walgreens. Let's just say, my tail was wagging and my expectations were high. I haven't had a good mangu since I moved to NJ from Brooklyn and this place fulfilled that fantasy! I ordered that, a Sancocho and some empanadas. While waiting for the food with my 2 year old, I scope out the menu which is tasty, the cleanliness of the place which was pretty good as well. 15 to 20 minutes later, got all my stuff to go. In my opinion, the empanadas were a bit dry, but this can happen anywhere when they sit in that warmer. The soup was pretty good. Had to add some lemon to calm down the flavor. But every person is different and the mangu was DELICIOUS! Got it with the 3 golpes.... That dish is for special occasions, maybe even once a month if gaining weight is needed. read more
