In town for Jeep Week and wanted some q. Was nice to get out of Daytona and the craziness so headed 15 minutes to Pumphouse BBQ in Ormond and so glad we did. Sat at the apparently new bar where you can have waiter service (otherwise you order from counter and seat yourself). Our waiter was Carlin, and he rocked. Personable, great service..we talked a lot about music, and gave us great food recos. Wife and I started with a beer, i had one from Twisted animals, a hazy IPA which was incredible. We ordered loaded skins for the family as we were getting hangry. They were good..not amazing...but Carlin threw some of the sweet BBQ sauce on it and definitely amped it up (they should come that way). Between all of us there was pork, there was mac n cheese, ny pasta salad, another beer, collard green, cornbread..and their sauces...oh and one daugther 'had a salad'. Seriously. Atmosphere - very casual, bar and restaurant seating separate. Noisy. Service - also very casual but in a nice way. Got us what we ordered, followed up. When the beer I wanted wasn't on the tap, the waitress helped me find the bar and the "new" beer list. Blue Moon served without citrus. Felt that staff cared about us and about the success of the restaurant. We were there on a Saturday around 4pm. That's kind of a factor in what comes next. Food: All the BBQ items were good. Individually, below. Wings - somehow seemed triple cooked? Tasted good, dry, but sauces were there. Portion seemed small, 7-8. My guess is that they were smoked and then heated up in the fryer. Reuben - excellent. Coleslaw watery and bitter. Fries fresh and good. Marble rye was great to see this far south. Cuban - sandwich itself excellent to outstanding. Great pork and cheese. Could use a little more pickle. I supplemented it with lots of mustard sauce. Mac and cheese - dry al dente, but not soggy and overcooked. Not for the oozy gooey crowd. My granddaughter found the dry corkscrews easy to pick up and eat. Mustard flavor. Baked potato - Yes! Crispy, creamy, served with a bunch of butter, salt on the outside. Triple B - Huge sandwich!! All gone!! Double fries as a side. Fries excellent. Brisket dinner - the brisket here is a go-to. Always great. The beans were good. Cole slaw same as above. And more great fries. Nobody in my party ordered the vegs, but I saw them and the green beans were in a vat of saltwater, presumably from the can and the collards also looked like they'd had better days. The salads looked ok except the cold Mac salad looked just like the hot Mac side. Hmm. My net recommendation is to come here for a beer and order meats to go. Maybe some fries. For all the good reviews and word of mouth I feel this place is a bit overhyped. The food was alright but nothing spectacular and the service wasn't the greatest, the cashier was in an arm sling and was doing the job of like 3 people because the rest had zero work ethic. Food was about the equivalent of ordering 4 rivers, mission bbq, or the like. Wasn't really worth the price, was about $45-50 for 3 people for just ok food. Might go back but won't be my first choice for bbq. read more

First off all bbq is subjective because there are so many types, varieties and of course personal preferences, in saying that I'm pretty picky when it comes to bbq but I can appreciate all the different styles and I try to judge each on its individual merits. Call it whatever style you want Texas, Kansas City, Memphis but this is Florida bbq by default and although we don't live in a state that is known for its bbq, this bbq is no doubt an excellent example and represents Florida well - Pit Masters have passion and although tend to be a little bias they don't take their craft lightly and some don't take criticism of their creations lightly as well. Today's visit was a snap-shot of the food, customer service, etc., and doesn't in anyway carry any weight other than that it's my opinion, so I'd recommend you try this place out for yourself and come to your own conclusion. The Brisket was extremely tender and barked up really nice and the lean to fat ratio was just about perfect I think it's an excellent example of what a brisket sandwich is made of. I would of loved to have had the potato bun buttered and toasted on a flattop to add some extra flavor and texture but again that's how I like it, I also like it on fresh white bread but the brisket is the main ingredient and it's excellent. The Spare Ribs, I ordered a half rack, they are meaty and a quality product, although I would preferred more flavor (I love a heavy dry rub with more bark) these ribs are melt in your mouth tender but still held onto the bone a little providing that slight chew which I love. I think finding some middle ground is wise with its lacking of over-smoking flavor and it's extremely tender texture suits more customer's taste so it totally makes good business sense. Sides - The green beans are really good I love having a quality side like this with my bbq meal - the collards need some help they were a little bland but tender, the restaurant needs to provide some bottled peppered vinegar this would fix it for sure, maybe that's just my southern roots talking - the fries were good but I'm a crispy crinkle fry guy with bbq lol. I really appreciate the owners repurposing ingredients instead of creating waste but I came here for bbq meats off the pit I think the amount of meat used in the beans and collards is overkill my servings were more than a 50/50 ration meat to vegetables and could be the server so no foul i would let them know my preference next time. We enjoyed our visit today, the customer service was extremely friendly and accommodating and everyone was smiling, that was nice to see and says a lot about the owners. I think it's important to continuously train people and that's a difficult task I did see a few struggles with routine things like knowing the offerings or how things can be paired and working the register but that's not uncommon and is always a challenge. The location is great and the owner has addressed the front parking complaints numerous times so that is what it is, I recommend you try this place I think they are here to stay so support them... read more

Went o Pumphouse for a quick lunch because they have burnt ends... my mama's fave. Staff was friendly, meal came out super quick and menu was large for a BBQ. I always get pulled chicken at BBQ restaurants so I stuck with my staple. If I rated the experience off just the chicken it'd be a 1 star review. Chicken had no flavor, no salt, no smoke flavor, Nada, Nothing. And it was really wet. Like you would squish out water when you chewed. Thankfully this will be perfect for the puppies. The deviled egg pasta salad was good, my noodles were a bit too al dente but the sauce had good flavor. Not sure I'd order that side again... maybe try the potato salad next time. Or I wish I had gotten the onion strings... c'est la vie! Now let's get to the best part... the Mac & Cheese was amazing! So good, full of flavor and of course yummy cheese. Quite simply the best baked beans, by far, that I ever had. The best sweet potato casserole I ever had. Again, by far! The brisket was as good as any I ever had. The patty melt was the best I ever had. I asked a man behind the counter if he was a cook. He set me straight. He said "I am the CHEF." Right you are sir. You are a chef! I picked up three dinners to go last night and this was my 1st time to this new little restaurant that opened back in July. While I was waiting a short 15 minutes for my dinners, I sat at the bar and shot the breeze with the bartender, Mason, and fellow customers while sipping a delicious IPA from Persimmon Hollow Brewery in Deland. All of their tap handles noted an outstanding selection of craft beers. Once home, we tore into the packages that smelled so incredibly smoky. My dad and I had the sliced brisket, while another member had the St. Louis-style ribs. Both meats were top-notch: tender and moist, with a nice crust and a lot of smoke. No sauce necessary. Each meat came with two sides. We sampled collard greens, mac and cheese, baked beans, and deviled egg pasta casserole. All were excellent. The brisket dinner was $16.99 and the ribs dinner was $17.99. I thought the side portions were adequate, and the meat portion was more than I expected. I'll be back soon. read more

The parking is kind of awkward as you pull into parking spaces right off Granada blvd, which can be chaotic backing out of when you leave especially. The exterior of this place reminds me of an old diner from days past but the inside has a firehouse theme to it. Now to the main event, the food. We ordered a brisket dinner and the brisket combo dinner. The brisket was OK by what I've come to expect living in Florida but I wouldn't compare it to what I've had in Texas- I had to use a knife to cut it!! First time for everything I guess? I had about 2-3 ounces of pure fat left on the plate. The sweet potato casserole is just horrible, please don't order this. I'm pretty sure it was a sweet potato mixed with marshmallow fluff and topped with literally 1 pecan chopped into 4 pieces. I would give this side a 1/5 because it's a waste of a sweet potato! The "cornbread" I'm pretty sure they just open a box of Jiffy, which if you are from the south isn't cornbread at all but CORN CAKE. Just a heads up. Overall I would rate this place a 3/5. I said that I would review after our big order. We got 5lbs of pulled pork and 5lbs of pulled chicken. It was a hit with everyone. I didn't take pictures of the two big tins full of awesome meats. Sorry. But trust me, they were both really good and gone in no time. The collards, BBQ Beans (awesome for both) were real tasty. Beans had quite a bite. I love spicy so I thought they were awesome. Service here is always good. Bartenders, waiters and the rest of the staff are always very kind and provide good service. However, the few times that I been here my order has been wrong each time. Granted it was just the sides, having to correct it each time adds up. Luckily it is an easy fix. In addition, they always seem to be out of certain sides and the half chicken consistently, despite whatever time I go at. Got an order for ten people to go. The food was mostly good but the cornbread was room temperature and a little dry. The collards were excellent and full of meat. The baby back ribs were very good and the beef brisket was unbelievably tender. The pulled chicken was good but needed some sauce--there were some excellent sauces to choose from, however, so it was a big hit. The mac and cheese was okay but just enough different from what I was expecting that I would not order it again. That said, the party ate all of it. What a gem! This place is fantastic. First of all, the food is magnificent. I've had barbecue all over this fine country and this is some of the best. If not the best that I've ever had. They take traditional barbecue and add different sauces and ingredients to take it to a higher level. The staff is friendly and energetic. Food came out quickly and was piping hot. You can either order at the counter and they will bring it to your table, or you can sit down anywhere and a server will be glad to do all that for you. They also have a full bar. Wow, We got the Labor Day Special to watch the a little college football. The special had 2 racks of ribs, 1 pound of brisket and 3 sides for $80 and the we ordered wings. First the ribs were the best I have ever tasted. They had great flavor and fell off the bone. The brisket had nice flavor, and super moist. The wings also were great and my favorite sauce was black berry habenero. The sides were also tasty. My wife always wants collards, these were amazing and meat all in them. Tried this BBQ place, something other than the common choices. Very happy we did. First walked in, it did seem like no one was happy. However, Rob (owner) came up and took out orders. He was very friendly and a welcoming personality. The brisket and chicken were great. Flavor was wonderful. The bake potato was perfect. It is a nice place with natural wood tables glossed over. I am so upset I have to review this place. First off, the Owner needs to polish up on his Customer Service skills. We were very excited to try this place. 1-The orders came out in foam takeaway containers and they knew we were eating in. 2-we ordered 1/2 lb of brisket and 1/2 lb of pastrami, which came out as fat. When questioned why it was so fatty, we were told we ordered the tip which we did NOT! 3-I ordered a loaded baked potato which came out plain. All we heard were apologies but nothing to rectify the situation. The Owner had the audacity to ask us if we wanted to take the fat to go!
