The Bicycle: An early 90's Trek MTB inherited from a friend's father…read more The Mission: Phoenix that lug-framed beast into a glorious knock-around with some possible gravel grinding in the future. The Players: Myself, a modest pile of loot, a local powder coat company (who shall remain nameless, but I will say they are located near a small airport. Meh.), and Josh at Rainbow Bicycle. How It All Went Down: I went in and stated my goals. Josh was the designated man. We set a budget, which was small for the bicycle world these days and talked possibilities. It was green-light-go. Josh disassembled the bike. I took the relevant bits to powder coat... sexy sage green. An ice age later I got the bicycle back with far fewer ducats in my purse and repatriated it to Rainbow. Josh made it all happen, with style. Vintage stem friction shifters? No problem. Rebuild those 26" double wall, double eyelet rims? Done. Bearings? Clean and new. Slap on those vintage French moustache bars I bought of of EBay with no known measurements as a gamble? No. They don't fit. But it was my fault, and Josh was still willing to troubleshoot. When the logistics became silly Josh pulled out some old swept back bars that would work with that weird Trek stem. Winning. Communication? On point throughout. The Summary: Josh is a wizard. Glorious machines were created. Rainbow Bicycle Shop is decidedly more high-end than L.B.S., but it is the only real option in the Dirty Lew. If you need NASA components and lots of carbon fiber they are definitely your place (you prince you), but rugged romanticism is not spit upon either, a rare duality. I can't speak for the rest of the crew because we had little interaction, but if they are half as good, there is a strong case for versatility to be made. And they always mask up during the 'Rona (viruses don't understand human politics! Smart is smart.) Post Scriptum: I'll post a before and after picture of the build once I finish the details (need the fly fishing rod style cork grips from Rivendell, because the wool wraps from Analog don't work with the MTB brake levers' bump.)

If your friends owned a bike shop ... this is it! Just honest, knowledgable bike folks who want you as a long term customer rather than a quick sale. I've been doing business at Rainbow for nearly twenty years with complete satisfaction. This is THE go-to shop in central Maine. Buy local and support your friends .... Rainbow Bike!
