My wife and I made the move from California back up to the Pacific Northwest in mid January. The many of you that have moved or are moving know the numerous headaches that go with it. Calling Janelle along the way on the day we were due in Portland without a place for all of our stuff, relieved one of those headaches. She was an awesome ambassador for Portland and extremely helpful with finding me the storage spot for our needs on the fly. My experience with Public Storage was terrible - including predatory price increases, insufficient security (including 2 break-ins in 6 months) and poor customer service/responsiveness. The TLDR summary is -- stay away and find a different solution for storage! Public Storage offered a good initial price compared to competitors in the area, offering me a large storage unit for $424/month. I expected an increase, as it is known that this industry lures you with low initial pricing, but the experience I had is nothing short of "predatory". In the 4th month, the price increased by 39% to $593. I was surprised by the magnitude of increase but continued using the storage unit. About 6 months into my lease, I experienced a first break-in where a pry-bar was used to open metal corrugated doors on the unit, by bending them out of the tracks. My storage unit was at the end of their building, and they did not have adequate security camera coverage. Multiple items were stolen from my storage unit, which amounted to an eventual ~$1500 payout from their third-party insurer through Orange Door. Public Storage was not able to provide another large unit that could fit the contents at the time, so I had to move some more valuable items out (time/effort/expense) and asked them to repair the unit as soon as possible and install a new security camera that covers the end of the building. It took them over 2 weeks to install a plywood cover over the broken door, and 3 months to repair the door (without further securing it). I left Public Storage a key to my unit to facilitate the repair but had no idea it would take 3 months like this (more later). Throughout the whole ordeal, I also was never successful in getting any additional security/lighting or protection added to this part of the building. Shortly after this horrible experience, I was contacted (8 months in) and told that the price was increased to $755/month - a 78% increase since starting the lease. After spending a good amount of time on the phone, the local office reduced that to $633 for "3 months" and I started to make plans to vacate the unit. After planning to move out, I returned to the unit to find that more items had been stolen from the storage unit. Since this happened while Public Storage had access to the storage unit, I contacted their management and suggested they investigate (and filed another police report). They claimed that another break-in had occurred, and they had already repaired the unit again. They had not reached me about either the break-in or the 2nd repair. Throughout the issues, I found it difficult to contact the company representatives. They do not really work through email or text messaging and often don't answer the phone during business hours. I also made 3 separate trips to try to collect the shared key during clearly posted business hours, but there was not employee available onsite. When I did reach local representatives, they were generally nice and helpful. At the end of the ordeal, I asked for a 1-month credit due to poor security and overall experience. This was granted and showed up on my credit card, and I put this behind me (or so I thought). Several months after putting this behind me, I was contacted by a regional office for Public Storage claiming that I was granted a one-month refund that I should not have received. I explained this over the phone to the regional representative, and his attitude was one of complete ambivalence as I relayed all of the issues at which point he told me to pay, or he would send my account over to a collection agency. read more

The staff was genuinely warm and helpful from the beginning, and the facility itself is easy to access, super secure, and well-maintained. Our Public Storage unit at 1921 N. Gantenbein in Portland was broken into and the good stuff was stolen. Do not use this storage facility, at least the units outside of the fence and gate. I heard from other renters that thieves also had broken into the storage unit of a previous renter. There appears to be a homeless camp behind the storage facility and the area isn't secure at night. My recommendation is to find a better storage place for your stuff. read more

Google reviews for reference. Incorrect office hours/registration information was provided. Moving truck and movers on the clock billing me for hours to sit outside the Public Storage facility. Waiting to have access to my storage unit I had already paid for. Sitting there with movers on the clock during the specific hours I was told I would be able to come to the facility any time and would have immediate access. Customer service was non-existent at best, no attempt to make things right by crediting my account even though they were obviously 110% at fault for providing me with specific registration instructions and info that was incorrect. I want to like this place, but I'd recommend avoiding. The rent increases are frequent and high and are forcing me to move out. Janelle, mentioned in several previous reviews, is indeed wonderful. The unit itself is fine, no complaints. In first 6 months rent went up ~20%. 9 months later another notice that rent is going up again, these aren't small bumps either. In total, we're up 33% in a year. This means my rent will double in about 3 years. Totally unsustainable and forcing me to move out. You can appeal the increases, kindof, ask at the desk, but it feels very performative and of course the answer was no. ‍ read more

This place is a NIGHTMARE and a racket. I had just moved the last of my belongings in when my INTERIOR unit was broken into and every box ripped open and dumped out. Another woman's unit, who had also JUST moved in, had hers burglarized the same night. Both of our locks, provided by Public Storage, in tact and locked back up. There was a fill-in staff who took a photo and handed me an insurance brochure. He was unable to answer any questions because he kept saying he was a temp. The next day I approached the main manager and asked for the limited video-surveillance only covers the main gate, and main entrance to the interior units. He said it was against PS policy, and that only managers and the police can see the video. When I asked him if he had seen it, he stated that "Kevin had probably seen it." Kevin being the temp staff with no answers. So the property manager had not even bothered to watch the video himself to see wtf when at least two units were broken into on the same night. Zero care or customer service. No apologies for my loss, nothing. He asked if I'd filed a police report, which I had, but I asked him if he really thought were going to anything-and he actually responded "No, because they've been DEFUNDED." I was floored that he would get political when I just experienced this major loss and trauma, and he laughed at me. It's in a sketchy part of town and even parking behind the locked gate doesn't feel safe. While I was unloading my stuff out of the unit, I heard someone coughing in a unit near mine. All doors were closed and there was no one in the parking lot. One time I saw a guy running in the dark hallways when there were no cars in the lot. This is basically a creepy hostel. Don't put your stuff here. I have no idea how this insurance claim is going to go or if I'm going to get any money back from these guys but I don't have a lot of confidence. read more

This is my first experience with this company. It's not good. 1st of all I was unable to move in on the date I paid for because no one was in the office. 2nd they don't tell you what their hours of operation are. 3rd when I got there the storage facility was waterlogged. The floors and walls were damp from frequent leaks. TBH your items might be safer on the street. read more

This storage place as recently changed hands from Extra Space to Public Storage. Paying your bill online is a nightmare. I have been trying to submit payment via the app for two months and run into problem after problem. You can't pay directly to the office over the phone either. They give you a toll free number then they put you on hold for quite some time. A recording comes on periodically saying you can pay right through the website rather than hold. Tried that. Didn't work. Tried messaging in app which is another option to pay, didn't work. Finally tried calling another number the message person gave me. Person says they charge 20.00 to take payment over the phone. Omg!! Crazy! read more

an absolute NIGHTMARE!!! I got my locker by doing everything online, to get the cheapest price. but that's where my nightmare begins. nowhere on the site, or the app does it say the property I chose didn't have a manager on site or ANYONE AT ALL. AND THAT IT WAS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. in fact when I was actually able to get ahold of a human he reassured me that if I finish paying online I would get my unit and a gate code. in fact I did, HOWEVER he didn't tell me that I still had to get an appointment before I could use the gate code, or my locker. I showed up at 10am thinking everything was good. enter the code and get "invalid see manager", I was there in the hot sun all my belongings I had shlepped on the bus, no manager, and could only get recordings whenever I called ANY LISTED NUMBERS! ITtook 7 hours to get my unit! S E V E N HOURS! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY AT ALL!! IM FORST TO STAY BECAUSE THEY WON'T REFUND MY MONEY! HOWEVER I would like to give mad props to Cedric the employee who finally showed up to help me when he found out the manager wasn't going to! I think Cedric should be the manager! have had my unit for a year now and they've jumped from around $100 to $219 starting in May. the first increase was about $30- the second one (every 6 months) is almost $50! the smaller units don't seem to get the increases like the 10x10 and up do, and they don't care about how it affects the renter. but if I was a new renter, I'd get the same size for $1.00 first mo th and the low initial price for the next 6 months. the people there are great and sympathetic, but it's corporate that's in charge and they don't give a . don't fall for th initial cheap deal, they hook ya and then your screwed and they just tell you you're free to leave an time... not that easy at my age!! will never recommend them or use them again! read more

I put items in storage after suffering a concussion in a car accident. I was trying to sign up or the online rate, and asked the attendant to help me, explaining my situation. She instead signed me up for a different rate without my knowledge -- $30 a month higher. I spoke with a surly desk staff and wrote emails to managers. I was rebuffed. I just found that my rate went up another $20 a month out of the blue without my knowledge or consent in January. I feel completely taken advantage of. These are NOT nice people or a respectable business. Do not do business with them. I look forward for them proving me wrong, and responsibly taking care of this situation. read more

No parking anywhere for anyone just needing to stop in. The floor around the elevator was being painted the day we were moving stuff in and we had no notice that was going to be happening. We had to move all of our heavy furniture using the stairs and let me tell you, it's NOT ideal. Was extremely frustrated to not have a heads up about that. Storage unit itself is fine, no lights, which I assume is pretty normal for most storage units. A small detail but still annoying you have to get out to punch your number into the keypad. read more

My experience with this location is limited to phone calls and simply moving in, but was predominantly positive. The two staff members I met were very friendly and helpful (PJ was great!). Still getting familiar with the city, the location was fairly easy to find (right by the Interstate). Pretty clean, considering they're storage units. It was in the mid-80s when I showed up and there's no AC in the building but it wasn't unbearable. Definitely some characters around the place, though! The guy who was riding his bicycles through the halls kind of gave me the willies (was he a customer? how did he get in there?) but in the end I think he was pretty harmless. read more

absolutely unhappy with my experience at this location. No power to my light and when addressing this problem with Janelle property manager she told us it was like that when she cleaned prior to renting to us and we should" go purchase lanterns if we needed light" and the company is not responsible to supply light to the units. Sounds very unsafe and dangerous during the winter months!! I highly doubt her statement is true and might be a bit of a liability public storage would never let knowingly go unfixed. being in an outside unit in the dark where leaves and muddy conditions in front of units(every unit) making it a dirty mess to move anything around, get organized on any level. I even offered to rake it up for her but did not have one to use. i have rented storage units in my life and as far as outside access and conditions this is the WORST MAINTAINDED FACILITY IVE EVER SEEN!! I have had a storage unit here for over 5 years Janelle has ALWAYS been great. Public Storage should be very grateful they have her as an employee. She is AWESOME. I am however inclined to mention they also need to support her with the tools she needs including CARTS that are not broken and several more than just 2 would be very helpful. read more

The woman at the front speaks to customers pretty crudely and aggressively. Also, they asked for a $75 rent increase after 4 months and do not provide a dumpster. The website does not accurately reflect their hours. We are happy to be moving our things out of this unit. read more

Been with this storage a month now. Janelle is so beyond fabulous. Very sweet. Extremely funny and personable. Very knowledgeable. She makes signing up quick and we had a lot of laughs. Its like you have known her forever. Pretty easy to get to this facility. Prices reasonable. Gated. I didn't like having to buy an 18$ lock when we had a new really sturdy one. I don't like reminder payment calls especially on the day pymt is due. ( called even if your Not late. Just to tell you to make your pymt). The emergency contact is not an emergency contact as the lease states. Its actually an alternate number. So if you cannot be reached by phone even in non emergency, but to be reminded to pay and it's the date due, not late, just know that your emergency contact will be called. It really should be listed as something other than emergency contact since that's not what it's used for. Other than that I have no complaints so far. I don't plan on being there long. Just a temp placement until I move. I do recommend working with Janelle. Again she rocks. Paying online is very simple and convenient. The businesses around the facility are all very nice people. Even helped us with a forklift for my husband's huge tool box. Can't go wrong with Janelle or the facility just know you'll be required to buy an expensive lock and the emergency number is not for emergencies but even if they cannot reach you. read more

Janelle delivered excellent customer service. We were shown the unit and the process was painless, fast, and simple. She not only displayed excellent customer service skills, but also displayed expert knowledge of the units and paperwork. Had the second paragraph of this review not been written I would have given this 5 stars. However, the day before we did not get as good of service from the closing manager. We were told by the customer service representative from a call center our reservation was sent and to hurry on over because they closed in 30 minutes. He said they will get it and be ready for us. We called roughly 27 minutes before closing and received no answer. arrived at about 11 minutes before closing to watch the site attendant walk at a brisk pace away from the office as we go out of our car. about 5 minutes later she came back and told us they were closed. The time was now 5:55 and they closed at 6:00. I told her we were told to come regardless. She said "They do this all the time... I cant stay open past 6:00." Although irritated I made an appointment for the morning, which other obligations had already been scheduled. She told me she couldn't do any thing and that if i wanted i could make a complaint through the company. After further inquiry later I was told that she had lied and should have gotten us the unit. Hence this lengthy review. Aside from that, the first month for a dollar was not applicable for the unit. read more

She called me first thing in the morning asking what time would work best for me. I called back minutes later realizing I had to reschedule for later in the day than we had just coordinated. Total move in cost is not what is emailed or explained over the phone . They're "not allowed" to discuss the insurance obligations over the phone. They make sure you waste your time going all the way down there and then tell you there is an additional $50 charge. Wow. This facility is poorly operated/managed by the onsite employee and the district manager. I had belongings at this site for less than a month before my unit was broken into and had most of my belongings stolen. Public storage corporately is not helpful and their local employees are even less helpful. If you have anything of value do not store it at this facility. read more

this franchise of public storage is excellent. janelle was my manager and after the sales pitches and the $18 lock that u get to keep and $9 insurance premium required (public storage hidden fees), i was ready to 'move in'. i told her id only want one month and when i removed the lock aFter i was done before my month was over, she closed the account for me, talk about customer service!!! literally in and out service, simple fast no hassle. other staff are on top of things, very smooth business read more
