Just moved my stuff out after a year there. It's not the newest, or the squeaky-cleanest, but it was pretty convenient, the loading/access hours were reasonable, and I felt like my stuff was safe. Everyone who worked there was cool. They have a large freight elevator, but only a couple carts, so I would recommend bringing additional cart/rollers, if you have a ton of stuff to move in/out. I moved last Saturday (in the middle of an ice storm!) and the lady who helped me, I want to say her name was holly but I realized I didn't catch her name fully. She was LOVELY. She made an already stressful situation as smooth as she could, and went above and beyond to help offer as many resources and help as she could. I have only ever had negative experiences with uhauls, but she made this experience great. I will definitely be using A1 moving forward. I just moved in to A1 self storage 2 weeks ago. They called and e-mailed me saying that there was a fire on the sidewalk outside their building. A propane tank exploded due to a homeless camp. I have not noticed much homeless in this area. I am VERY happy that they told me about this, there was no damage to any units or any of my stuff. However, the fact that they informed people speaks very highly of this company. The last storage place I was at did not inform their customers when units were broken in to. A1 also has per unit alarming which is a great security feature! read more

I used A-1 for my storage needs while I was between homes. I requested a unit on the 1st floor and left a deposit for the same, but when I arrived, the man couldn't find my deposit and no longer had that size available on the 1st floor, I was on the 4th floor. I ended up settling for a smaller unit on the 1st floor after showing I had the deposit deducted from my bank account. The actual facility is not bad, it's an easy location and good access even when the office hours are closed. It does feel secure, since each unit comes with its own password. Flash forward to when I was picking up my stuff last week. When I opened the unit door, I immediately was overcome with the smell of animal urine. It turns out, little mice or rats made themselves comfortable in my unit, which included pissing all over my brand new mattress. I addressed this with the office manager, who seemed to be aware of the vermon problem, but rather unapologetic about it. I guess when you're paying $115/ mo to keep your belongings secure and safe, you'd also expect not to have to your stuff ruined under their care. I never received any notification that there could potentially be a vermon problem, which I feel is worthy of notification to their tenants. Actual facility would garner a higher rating, but the very few personnel interactions I had were less than satisfying, and the ruined $1600 mattress was a zero. read more

But isn't that what you want when you entrust your precious things to a unit in a warehouse in the industrial SE section of Portland? Don't you want to make sure that the locker is properly alarmed, and that only a select few can get in there? Having such a customer service oriented guy making sure that every little bit of information is just perfect makes it, well, that much easier on the other end in case something goes wrong (which it never did my short tenure as a client of this facility - most likely because, well, Jerry runs a tight ship). We have to call to complain about our bill every single month. When we first got the unit in August 2013, the front desk man quoted us a price. When we got there, the unit was taken, but he agreed to give us a nicer one at the same price he quoted before. Every month, we get a different and higher bill. In the seven months we've rented there, the bill has gone up $15. They've charged us twice one month. And every time we call, they have some computer issue that prevents them from either checking or confirming what will happen next. The units themselves are fine and clean. It feels safe. There's easy car access. The people are nice and have tried to make up for the issues. But we have had to call every single month to fix something, so for the billing troubles alone, I really wouldn't recommend A1 Storage. read more

Courteous service, not entirely dust free units (but they let us borrow a broom and sweep up a bit) and a comprehensive security system. We were happy with the price and got a unit on the first floor with easy access from parking. Also, they have plenty of locks that you can use for free instead of buying new. Their doors are designed where the bolts are interchangeable, so I don't think there's any issue with reusing. You also have the only set of keys. When you arrive you'll confirm the size of unit that you're looking for, and they'll take a look at what's available, you'll do some paperwork, and get some paperwork on how to access the unit and their hours, and insurance etc. Quick tour, get the lock, move your stuff in and you're good to go. I would leave about 30-45 minutes for all the paperwork and payment and the walk-through. And whatever time you would need to move whatever amount of stuff you have. The only issue would be when my boyfriend called initially to reserve a unit, they charged $25 holding deposit, and when we actually went to rent the unit they charged the full price and didn't apply the deposit amount. The guy who helped us was puzzled why we were charged in the first place, so I'm not sure what their actual policy is on that. Anyways, it was lucky my boyfriend caught the error and asked about it, but it took at least 3 weeks and a couple followups before getting the refund. We were helped by David and Jerry. read more

It was an absolute pleasure working with these guys. I never had any trouble with the staff or with access (although I gave *them* plenty of trouble... "Hello. Yes. It's me. Again. I've forgotten my code. ...Again"). It's a unique storage facility, and I had a nice unit in the basement level. Great, huge elevator and multiple flat-carts always available to get that stuff in-and-OUT (or "oot" if you're Canadian. Worry not - they don't discriminate). Plus, I was always able to park right up by the huge bay doors. Ultimately, they were a tremendously professional group. After some bizarre complications with my card (not) running the monthly charge, and my subsequent request to pull the last of my stuff out and close my account anyway, they were not only beyond courteous but also chose to simply waive the fee I still had yet to pay for the month, in light of the fact that I'd "been good about making previous payments on time." Holy crap - discretion! Maintain an awareness of and respect for their rules, and your experience will be better than painless. I would eagerly utilize their facility and services again, and may actually do so very soon... read more

These guys were excellent to work with. From my first inquiry to moving our stuff out and finalizing the account, A1 was great. The manager, Jim, was always helpful. When I initially called he didn't try to upsell a larger unit, in fact he was very diligent about getting the right size for us. During the months we stored at A1, the access hours were adequate, the place was always clean, and making payments was never a problem. When we checked out, the staff member noticed we were emptying the unit, so he brought us all the necessary paperwork to sign, saving us a trip to the office. And to top it off, they prorated our payment so we got a check in the mail for the remaining days of the month we had already paid for. I called A1 Self Storage to request a rate on their 10x10 spaces. I made it very clear on the phone that all I wanted was a rate, and that I was very busy and did not have time for a lengthy conversation. After 5 or 6 requests for more information from me, such as my phone number, and other information that was completely irrelevant to my request, I was told that they don't have any of those spaces available right now. Ok, I said, fine, but what is the RATE!? "I can't give you that information unless we have the space available." Am I missing something here? What I suspect is some kind of variable and unfair pricing scheme. I mean, how hard is it to just give me a rate on a storage space you advertise? Tell me how much the people currently renting those sized spaces are paying. Seems a simple request. Well, I guess not. I shall not be renting space at A1, and I suggest you don't either. Follow up: Someone from A1 Storage called me seriously not 15 minutes after I'd written this review, while I was still working, on a business call. Creepy stalker behaviour much? Wow. When the woman on the phone said it was A1 calling "about your feedback on Yelp" I about screamed at her. Interrupting me while I am working to discuss your well-deserved lousy Yelp review is not going to win any favours here. I promptly told her that they should try having decent customer service next time, and that I did not appreciate being called back. Worst experience ever. Had a scheduled confirmed reservation for a UHaul truck at 9am when they opened. Nobody ever showed. Waited called numerous numbers and told they would open at ten then it was 1030. When it got to be 1040 I ended up having to rent a truck somewhere else. No call to apologize explain or anything. When I called them later was told "sorry for your delay"!and that was it. Plus the loading docks stink like piss. read more

They have something like 4 tvs in the office and this crazy alarm system that tells them anytime a unit door is open. Probably the safest place for your belongings. This was a great storage facility. I used it for a couple of years. The cost was about $140 for a 10 x 12 unit. While you do need to elevator up and down, it was rarely crowded the days I had visit so it didn't matter too much. Also the on-site staff was great. read more

Sure, I could have stuck my stuff somewhere a little cheaper, somewhere that had entrances to all the storage units from the outside, and a basic utility lock on every unit. But you really can't put a price on peace of mind, and that's exactly what I got at A-1. From the moment I came in to be shown the available units, both the guys in the office were professional and friendly. When I decided to rent a space there, they made sure I knew the rules of the facility (which seemed like a lot to remember at the time, but was mostly common-sense type of stuff) and how the security system works. Basically, you enter a code to go in, unlock your space and get your stuff, and enter your code to get back out. The code disarms the security system on your space--if someone tries to get in and they haven't entered your code at the front door first, the alarms go off. They're loud! One went off while I was there because a fellow renter didn't follow instructions. Be aware, you want to make sure you understand their directions--they charge $45 for a false alarm. The locks they use (that I did have to buy, for about $10) go into the doors themselves, so there isn't something there for a bolt cutter to grab onto. Putting my things into and taking my things out of the unit was really the easiest part of my move. The loading area was easy to use (they have a ramp and a row loading doors you can back up to) and they provide big, flat carts for you to load things on to take to your unit. I got two of my 6' bookshelves onto one of them and into the elevator with no problem. And when the truck was empty, it was nice to know that my stuff was under the watchful eye of the security cameras. If I need storage space again in Portland, there's no question where I'll be going. read more

This place is disgusting!!! It has RATS and has had them for months now I talked to two other people who have units at this facility and they had the same problem. They have these box traps everywhere and bags of poison in the units! When you ask about them they simply say it "preventative" but that's a fucking lie. I found two dead rats in my unit and mountains of poop. And my stuff got chewed up. I STRONGLY urge you to use a different facility!! Seriously i wish I took pictures they did and just cleaned it up for me. I moved my stuff out right away ! I have them one star because I had to pick one the deserve 0. And the guy I believe his name is Greg does NOT have good customer service he. Is bland and kind of rude as he talks but I believe that's just his voice, they used to have the is young girl working there WHO was amazingly helpful. I don't know why they let her leave. read more

Krissy helped with the initial reservation via email and quickly and readily answered every question professionally and promptly. Cym handled our sign up and showed us the unit. I'm impressed with the security of the building, the building access, and the units. When you're having to move a long distance and store your life's belongings for indefinite months, things are stressful enough. Both Cym and Krissy went above and beyond to help ease our stresses about storage, truck parking, etc, for our upcoming move into storage. I can't say thank you enough. Been a loyal customer here for several years but i am finally over being treated by their mean employees who seem a little sketchy to be working there in the first place. There are items missing from my unit. It is so easy for the employees to go through your unit because if you are late on paying they take off your assigned lock and put on their 'overdue' lock. In doing so your unit becomes fully accessible to these sketchy employees. I highly recommend not storing any valuables here. read more
