First off, I didn't purchase anything here during my visit however the impression they left me with after my visit will make me come here before any other store in the future. WAY different vibe than different similar branded stores, in a good way! Everyone was super helpful and knowledgeable, and even though they didn't have what I was looking for this trip I will totally be back next time I have something in mind. They had popular brands like Yeti, Vuori, North Face, etc. and when I visited they had clothing items 25% off so I would call before going to ask if a specific item you are looking for may be on sale! read more

This is for the overall company. I joined their mailing list for line for the 15% discount and put in an order for a high quality sleeping bag with a few other items. Order was cancelled the next day with no explanation. I called and a lady said that my billing address was wrong, so I made corrections and got the order going again. Order was cancelled again. I called my bank and they told me that Public Lands were cancelling it on their end, so I call the company again. A guy answer giving me the same reasons and I countered it with what the bank told me. He told me that if didn't matter because the addresses didn't match and I told him that I gave him the right one last time. I told him that I have a different card and was ready to give it, then he told me that I was breaking up and hung up on me. I called back one last time and told them that I'll do my business elsewhere and to take me off their mailing list. They shouldn't offer people a discount that they do not want me and honor! read more

With all the snow recently, I thought it would be cool to check out Public Lands in Cranberry Township for some new gear. The layout definitely reminded me of a Dick's Sporting Goods store. Everything was pretty pricey, as expected from name-brand outdoor gear, such as The North Face, Columbia, and Patagonia. I learned that you can actually rent all sorts of gear, including tents, sleeping bags, snowboards, bikes and kayaks. They also offer classes/events, mostly focused on rock climbing for now. I do feel that their climbing rates were a bit high for the limited space that they have. Their climbing wall has only 5 vertical routes with a very small bouldering area, and they charge ~$20 for one hour. As an avid indoor rock climber, I would recommend visiting one of Pittsburgh's climbing gyms instead. Their day passes cost ~$20 as well, and you can climb for as long as you like. I see the benefit of having the wall for trying on climbing shoes if you're looking to buy, but not so much for recreational purposes. read more

If you're one of those crunchers that likes to pretend you're a sportsman, this place is for you. Cooler for your beer? Nah. How bout a yeti for your local IPA uppity brew. Need a foraging jacket? Nah. How bout a Patagonia "look at me hiking!" Parka for your selfie hike in North Park. Want to watch people who want to be watched climb a rock wall and then tell you how tough it was in lulu lemon spanks? There you go. Need sports gear? Go somewhere else. BUT, the help is very friendly. The clothing is beautiful, the layout is warm, inviting and exceptional and the selection for suddenly ticked off Tesla owners is one of a kind. I have been a big fan of this store since before it even opened, the concept and mission of this brand is incredibly cool, but yesterday I rode here on my motorcycle in search of one specific item, and they didn't have it. It's not like it was out of stock or anything . . . they just don't carry it at all. Let me back-up a little, yesterday morning, while shaving, I dropped a camping mirror in the shower, and it cracked. I knew I could just run out to Walmart if I wanted to and pick one up, but Public Lands has been running commercials on television lately, and it stuck in my head that I hadn't been there in a while, so I decided to support a local company, and I packed up my motorcycle on this chilly, yet sunny day, and I rode North 35 minutes to Public Lands. For a store that is based on going camping and enjoying the outdoors, they are lacking some of the basic essentials . . . like a simple camping mirror. After searching around the store, and not finding what I needed, I approached two associates working near the tent area, and asked them for assistance to see if they had a camping mirror. They looked it up for me, and sadly told me they didn't carry one. Then they suggested I might find one at Walmart . . . oh, the irony . . . Long story short . . . they didn't have a basic camping essential that I needed, so I left empty-handed. Luckily, it wasn't a total loss, as I did get out and enjoy a nice motorcycle ride, and it was nice seeing the store again. I do still like this store very much, but on this visit, they fell short of my expectations . . . no cheers on this visit. read more

Beautiful store and a well-intentioned Mission Statement. It's not the type of store I would visit often and I don't find it too disimilar to what Field & Stream was, but I respect what they're trying to do. Even more so in this part of the city where the population can be extra triggered about the inventory this store sells. "WHERE ARE MAH GUNS?! THIS STORE HATES THE 2ND AMENDMENT!!" You do you. Not a real Sporting Goods Store! Stopped in to buy a Hunting license for my son, since he just passed his hunters safety course. And I should've known once I walked by the Yuppy tent on the side walk In The front of the store that they don't sell actual sporting goods. So the guy in the fishing department informed me they don't do that. " that's not our clientele " hmm this company got caught in the woke culture and got rid of all the hunting gear. But I'm sure they sell Ben Wa balls and ball gags, that seems to be there CLIENTELE... if you want a $500 cooler or an over priced shirt. Then this is your place. First time going to Public Lands today and I have to give it up to all EMPLOYEES! They were friendly, attentive, HELPFUL, and KIND!! I can't say enough about all of the employees we encountered today-THANK YOU!! Besides the awesome employees, walking in today I smiled, it was super cute to have a coffee truck and a fire pit with chairs...felt so cozy! The store is AWESOME! This is a store for glampers. $10,000 bicycles, overpriced status clothing, and just a pretentious attitude. Dicks started as a fishing /hunting store, now it is where you buy your "faux outdoormen" equiptment. Public Lands is just the newest mutation of Dicks into a store that panders to people with too much money who want to dress in the most in-fashion staus clothing. Any place that sells $10,000 bicycles should give you a clue who they are trying to target. read more

They only carry very expensive labels, a few of which I see the value in so I have purchased a couple of things here. However, PL is one of those places a sales associates walks up to you the instant you walk in the door, like a used car lot. Personally, that doesn't make me feel like I'm being helped -- it makes me feel like I'm being pushed. Truly enjoy the political diatribes below. Overall nice store and decent selection but a little expensive. Staff was helpful. If you are looking for fishing / hunting license the good news you don't have to leave the comfort of your couch. Just buy them online. You can even set up a renewal plan to avoid the crushing yearly reminder that you are being oppressed by the woke left. If you are looking for guns you are out of luck but are lots of stores to buy those in the area. read more

This particular rating for this particular situation is NOT GOOD. Generally our experience has been fine with past purchases. However we recently purchased online from Public Lands a Big Agnes Bunk House 4 tent. It was a screaming deal at $350 ($599 on the Big Agnes website). The tent arrived promptly and we took it into the backyard to set it up. I've set a few different tents up over the years and know how poles are supposed to look and it was obvious that one of the poles had a 45 degree bend in one section on one pole which wasn't supposed to be there. We called Public Lands and they said we could send it back for a refund (they were out of stock) but suggested we call Big Agnes for a warranty claim. As far as we were concerned this was not a warranty issue. This was a new tent. I felt like Public Lands was trying to pawn off their responsibility to service and stand behind what they sell. In any case we did call Big Agnes and sent them a pic of the pole and what came with the tent and they are shipping us a new pole section AND item that should have been included with our original purchase but were not. I'm not trying to slam Public Lands but I hope they have someone that monitors negative reviews and they see this and they try to do better in the future. It's like REI but with even more granola. If we're being perfectly honest, the former store in this lot (Field & Stream) was likely closed because the owners of it and the Dick's Sporting Goods chain continually pulled and returned certain firearms from their shelves while caving to perceived media and political pressure. I suspect the concept for the Public Lands store came as a direct result of wanting to "punish" former customers such as casual to avid target shooters & hunters. Many of those individuals had been boycotting Dick's & F&S stores for the above mentioned tactics and most likely hurting the company's bottom line. Specifically to the Public Lands store experience, even upon entering the atmosphere felt radically out of place for Western Pennsylvania. Concerning product, I was pleasantly surprised to find high quality footwear, such as Lowa brand. However, the vast majority were in colorways such as sky blue or light pink. Lowa boots are a very serious (and high dollar) boot that most western hunters and hikers (think Colorado Rocky Mountains) I know wear because they simply can't afford to turn an ankle when so far away from help in such rugged terrain. However, nobody I know would be interested in actually being in the outdoors in such a boot that isn't in an earth-toned colorway. In short, Public Lands appears to exist for the express purpose of flying in the face of Pennsylvanians who didn't care for the fickle outlook of Dick's Sporting Goods executives and spoke with their wallets. Public Lands very clearly seeks to cater to individuals who enjoy dressing up to "play outdoorsperson" (with high prices to match) from time to time rather than actual avid outdoorsmen and women. It would not surprise me if the store is already in the red from the opening event and remains so until the doors eventually close. read more

Just wanted to buy some boots. All the boots are "in the back" They have one kid working in the shoe section. He was very nice and helpful but with 4 customers there it was just to much for him. My choice was wait 10 minutes every time I wanted to try on a different boot, or go somewhere else, I went somewhere else. If your not going to put the shoes out where people can get them, then you need to have enough sales people to help your customers. read more

This is only a partial outdoor business. It was disappointing to not find any archery, hunting, or shooting sports! It was a very clean and organized store. The prices also seemed rather high. read more
