I told my wife I couldn't find a Kohl's. Cabela's was a pit stop on my long drive from Cincinnati to Deleware. I had no idea it was in West Virginia. Cabela's was a great place to stop! First and foremost, they have clean restrooms. As you enter the store, you are greeted by one of their many greeters. No sneaking into the bathroom without someone saying "Hi" to you. They have lots of stuff on display. The aquariums were great to look at with the various fish on display. They had the African safari area. They have lots of fishing and hunting clothes and supplies for sale. They know how to prolong your pit stop. It's a great place to stop at. The only thing they didn't have were West Virginia refrigerator magnets for crazy road trip tourists like me. After leaving, I found a Kohl's around the corner. Wheeling MEGA store. I have loved Cabela's over the years, so while killing some time I decided to go to one of their flagship stores in Wheeling. Not only is it a shopping experience, but a museum as well. Several rooms with animals on display, and the wonderful fish tank. Friendly staff, not too busy either. There is one thing I have to say about this store. It is so miserably hot that it is not worth visiting.

I grew up an hour away from the original Bass Pro shop so I knew what I was getting into when we stopped at Cabela's. Traveling half way across the country means we need new scenery for our young kids every few hours.... so looking at dead stuffed animals and some live fish seemed like good, free entertainment. First off, the greeter at the front door is very friendly. She was very sweet to my kids. Please tell me my kids are adorable... I will agree 100x over and will automatically think you have great taste. :) The mountain of dead animals with plane flying above it is impressive to me as an adult and for sure to my almost 3 year old. It was a bit confusing to her why the animals weren't moving but we got beyond that. We went upstairs to get a better view of high altitude animals. Had fun doing that. What wasn't fun was the animals on display from Africa. Are we really promoting the killing of elephants, Cabela's??? I'm no vegetarian, or saint of any kind but these animals are dwindling in number and are of a higher intelligence. To me they are majestic creatures. They have feelings, babies of their own that depend on them and are highly dependent on the other members of their herd. So, please, please don't display an elephant next to other 'game animals'. Ok, off my podium. Back to fun things like showing my kids fish in the tanks. The fish displays and water features in general at this location aren't as grand as the bigger stores but still fun to watch for a while. FYI to management.... I never saw a single staff member except for the front door greeter the entire time we were in the store. It was weird! read more

Traveling from NY to Indianapolis for the Indy500, stopped by the Cabelas because I've never been to one. This one seemed smaller than the Bass Pro in CT. Great aquarium and taxidermy animals. Great selection of hunting products. Prices were on par as all else. Didn't see any good deals that you couldn't find online. Staff was very helpful, was stopped by 5 employees to see if I needed any help. The check out was a bit slow considering how many employees were on duty and only 3 cashiers so a line was building up and there was at least a 5-10 min wait. Would have been nice for the other employees who weren't doing anything to speed up the checkout. read more

I'm not a big fan of hunting and fishing gear, but for those that are...this is your place! We went with some friends and family who were into that kind of stuff one afternoon, and I started looking around. I found myself looking at all the taxidermy. It was actually pretty cool. They also have nice size aquariums and a small restaurant on the 2nd floor to grab a snack. Huh...who'd of thought that I actually would enjoy myself in a hunting and fishing store?! It is a big store, many mounted animals and a huge aquarium. Large selection of clothing for the outdoors and casual wear. An excellent selection of fishing gear, lures, fish finders, rods, and reels. The hunting gear was well stocked. Firearm selection was respectable, a little higher then other places, the used firearms both rifle and pistols were high in price. A nice selection of ATV fir adult and youth. The second floor had camping and hiking items. They had a large selection of smokers and a wide variety of spices and rubs. And assortment of novelty items and outdoor books. There was a cafe there at one time and wild game was on the menu it is shut down, probably from staffing shortage or a Covid victim. (I'll go with staffing shortage because the Covid excuse is getting wore out.) The staff was friendly and very knowledgeable and helpful with any questions. Overall an excellent experience when I'm back in the area I'll definitely stop back in. read more

What can you say about a store that has so much to offer. A few things have changed since being acquired by Bass Pro shop however it's always nice to be able to go into a store, shop and see the various animals they have on display. Pricing is very good and compatible to product you are getting. They offer a restaurant with a nice selection of lunchtime items on location and the store is very spacious and well lit. If you're a hunter they have plenty to offer in that department as well, one could easily spend hours at this store. They are super helpful helping you finds things while making sure your experience is pleasant. read more

While here to learn more about Wheeling's history and its present, I took my students to Cabela's to hear local bluegrass music and we stumbled across the Fudge Shop inside. Yes, again, I am allergic to the milk and fudge, but I had to treat my rising Seniors who happily selected, shared, and scarfed down a colorful variety of fudge bars. I will keep this short and sweet! Yes, I went there and I went there in Wheeling. The real superstars are Jackie and Liz--the dynamic duo who allowed us to sample such rich, tasty fudge bars. Great place for those inclined more toward hunting, fishing and camping. Husband is one of those people, but I enjoy coming along. We have visited about 5 or 6 of these Cabelas stores on our travels across the country. The Wheeling store is the closest to our area and it's about an hour drive down Route 70. It is best to come on a weekday when it is less crowded. When we were here, I think there were more sales associates than customers. That made it easier to get assistance at the gun and fishing departments. I like the selection of Columbia and North Face women's clothing. I watch for bargains, but I don't have much luck in their "bargain cave." I also like the selection of shoes here too. Easier to try on and find a size than ordering blindly from online. read more

Spent a lovely Sunday afternoon at Cabela's! I had never been to this location but have often been to the one in Louisiana when we visit family. My husband is an avid outdoorsman - hunting/archery - and as a driver for an Amish logging crew he spends many hours in the woods! I tell him that Cabela's for outdoorsmen is like Ike or Target for women! Lol there's always soooomething you need (even if you didn't know you needed it)! Our trip yesterday was no exception and we actually BOTH ended up with some great deals! It's truly a beautiful store and it's laid out very nice. We started downstairs and checkout the men's clothing found several T-shirt's for my sister who loves soft baseball t's. Strolled through the aquarium - I don't care how old you are - looking at huge fish is cool! We strolled through fishing equipment and I picked up a set of 4/$20 tackle boxes that you could size the insides yourself. I used them for my craft/crystals it's an awesome deal. See what I mean here about you can find something even if you didn't expect to? In shoes we got my husband a great pair of hiking boots marked down from 90 to 30!!!! He's hard to fit at a 13W so finding those totally made my day! We spent a lot of time checking out the a archery, guns and then we sat and had lunch! Loved our lunch. That pulled pork sandwich I had was perfectly cooked. And the French fries were delicious. Jason has "The Legend" burger and wishes we lived closer to have it more often! We rounded out the day by buying way too much homemade fudge (lol) some candied cashews and moon pies. It was wonderful and I can't wait to do it all again! read more

I called to verify that they had a certain tent in stock. Customer service assured me they had two in the store and two across the street in the distribution center before I drove an hour and a half to get here. It took me 40 minutes to find somebody on the floor to help me, they told me they had none. I went downstairs to customer service and they're telling me that they are sorry but they do not have it in stock after I specifically called ahead and verified that they did and offered to pay ahead. gas prices are over five dollars a gallon and I drove three hours round-trip for something that they told me they had in stock but did not. all I know I spent almost 2 hours in the store while they looked in the warehouse in the distribution center and on the floor. This is one of the last mega sized stores that Cabela's built before they started throwing up the small stores everywhere. Man do I love me some cabelas! I love making a trip to this place it never gets boring. I always enjoy walking around and looking at all the taxidermy and the fish tanks are massive. The staff here is always extremely knowledgeable and helpful to say the least. I love there fudge shop and the sauces they carry are always fun to try. Also a lot of people seem to not know about the mini shoot range on the top level next to the candy store part. I also must mention that they stand behind there products and in the past I've had a pair of boots that had a defect in them and they guarantee there products for life and returned it with out a receipt. I definitely recommend stopping by here because it's honestly fun for the whole family kinda place in my eyes and definitely so if you love the out doors. I ordered a table top ice maker on 12/14 , the website said that it was in stock. On 12/21 I received email that it was shipped to the store, maybe 2 miles from the Wheeling DC So I called to schedule a curb side pickup. After waiting 27 minutes on hold at the pickup at curbside, I proceeded to go inside to the CS desk with phone in hand on hold. Over heard the store employee say to other employees that there was a caller's on hold for a while. I was second in line, so they didn't appear to be that busy. Three employees were at the counter. I spoke up and said I was the one still waiting to get my curbside order. No empathy given by any of the three new hires I suppose. I finally have my order and left. read more

My son-in-law, who served in both Afghanistan and Iraq, has been waiting almost three hours to complete a hefty firearm library purchase at this location because someone allegedly neglected a paperwork step. Perhaps Cabela's management should require additional staff training and implement a firearm sales process checklist. Museum & store all in one. This store was as large as any Home Depot I've been in. Lots of displays of animals with running streams and trout in them. It's one of those places that you walk in and say, OMG. It also has so many outdoor items that it literally boggles the mind. The bummer of the experience was the staff. They seemed disturbed that I would even talk to them. The first tried to avoid me, the second didn't want to stop her conversation with another employee to acknowledge my existence. But the last one was the funnest. Stopped and asked him if they had an item listed in the flier, and he responded, "did you see any?". No, that is why I'm asking. He then responded, "well, there you go then". So, I guess they are out. I'm proud to state that I didn't leave any drool stains on their carpet and my visa stayed in my wallet. read more

Being from NYC I don't have much use for outdoor gear, but I was camping that week and was being shown around the area, and was brought mainly for the animal displays and the fudge/jerky shop upstairs. I do think the store is cute and clean. The taxidermy is absolutely phenomenal. Moose, bears, hyenas, lions, zebras, wildebeests, a mounted jackalope (hehe), birds- and the deer hall of fame. There's a fun shooting gallery upstairs where you can shoot at outhouses and bottles of moonshine and the like. The fudge shop also has jams, jellies, spreads, candies, and a nice selection of jerky. I got a three variety pack of elk, buffalo, and venison. Prices are inflated, and I'm torn about this place because a few people told me it was at least partially responsible for the shutting down of a portion of downtown independent businesses. I think it's a fun place to visit though, especially for kids. read more

Each year we make a pilgrimage to Cabelas. My favorite store? No. But it is what it says it is and it makes Hubs really, really happy. Here's what I know: They will match prices. They will (WILL) find you what you're looking for and have it shipped to you from wherever it may be. I really like their little café upstairs and they have a fabulous cast iron display. Also upstairs is a little country store. Cilantro-jalapeno mustard? Heck yes! it is fabulous! I am always ready to leave sooner than Hubs, but it's a nice half day jaunt from Pittsburgh and from my perspective anything that makes Hubs this happy is surely doing something right! read more

We really liked this Cabela's due to the variety in all the products they Carrie and also due to the different "discovery" sections this store had. You were able to get a history of normal and non normal white tails in one room. Also the had a safari like animal display and a few others that where quiet interesting. Stopped in here with my husband the other day. We were on our way to the casino and he had received a $50 gift card from some of his employees, so why not? I have been to Cabela's on a handful of occasions, usually once a year or so. I am not a huge outdoors-person, although I did grow up fishing with my dad and grandpap. My husband, on the other hand, is an avid hunter. It is his life, his one big 'hobby'....and he would hunt year round if he could find a way to make a living doing so. Him and his brother also butcher and process the meat themselves. This is not his favorite store, but a gift card is a gift card. As many others have said, Cabela's is huge and kind of like a museum, with several mounts and harvested animals on display. There is a room full of buck, some head mounts and some full bodies (although I think some are replicas) along with their scores. It's cool to look at and I got some good pictures. However, this visit was more than a little frustrating. It was the day after Christmas and we assumed most people would be back to work. Not the case. The place was extremely crowded, and we had difficulty finding a parking space. Also, this store is very expensive. I have bought many things for my husband over the years, and I would not pay what they were asking for most anything in the store. I ventured over to the sales racks, just to browse. They had several racks of women's clothing on sale - half off - and prices were still outrageous (example - $55 for a long sleeved shirt, no hood, not thermal or insulated). Unfortunately, the more commercialized things become, the higher the cost. Another con was the lack of customer service. I hung around while my husband looked at tree stands, boots, trails cams, etc. and not one employee stopped to see if we needed assistance. And, frankly, plenty of employees walked right by us so they were not understaffed. Finally frustrated and in desperate need of some personal space, my husband settled on a new target (on sale for $45, the cheapest one I spotted). Surprisingly, checking out was quick and painless and the cashier gave us the change back in cash so we didn't have $2 hanging around on a gift card. There are many local, family owned stores that my husband prefers to shop at for big items like a new bow, etc. But, overall, not a bad stop if you have reason to be in the area and you want to browse. read more

Cabela's scared the schnekies out of me. Wow. I don't come from a huntin' -fishin' blood and the massive displays of taxidermied-up animals were pretty crazy. I mean, come on. Stuffed baby seal on display? There is an entire area called the 'gun library.' There is a small shooting range where you pop a quarter in and small children can practice their skills. There are baby food plate sets that are covered in camo. There are special seats so you can sit in trees for hours on end, awaiting your target. I will say that the aquarium is pretty cool, and a nice diversion. About as far away from my cup of tea that you can get. However, if you are a huntin'-fishin' lovin' kind of guy/girl, this place is better than Disneyland. They truly do have everything you could ever need. And if you are a hunter/fisher, you will probably be in here for the better part of a day once you cross the Cabela's threshold. So pack a snack. Actually. . . nevermind. You can even get a snack at the restaurant inside the store. read more

They have "the mountain" in the middle of the store which is a literally a huge mountain with dozens and dozens of harvested animals that have been stuffed and put on display--truly an amazing sight if your into the sport! There's also a Deer area where they have a ton of record deer (white-tail and mule deer) and lot of info on the species presented. (The above two are kin to going to a taxidermy type of museum--but in a good way!) This place is HUUUUUGE, also! Its like a small mall, all on its own! For hunting, they have everything that one could need for bowhunting or gun-types. The store is sort of sectioned off by interest and there's an "upstairs" First Floor: Clothing (camo and regular stuff) in the middle (right) Aquarium and Fishing Area, then shoes (all types) (Left) Gun Library and gun-hunting needs (rear) Bowhunting and also the Bargain Cave [between rear and left is the deer museum area] [EXACTLY in the middle of the store is "The Mountain"] (upstairs) dining, hiking, camping, gift area, cooking needs, shooting gallery for kids Things that I remember seeing: Hunting stuff (Bow, Rifle, Muzzleloader, Shotgun); Fishing stuff; Hiking stuff; camping stuff; Bargain Cave (clearanced merch--no reallllly awesome deals, but some discounted stuff); a TON of camo (brands and patterns galore including "She" for us ladies); shoes/boots (sports and non); regular clothing (but brands such as North Face & Columbia); Optics; Gift shop area; there was bedding/furniture/home section; An indoor shooting range gallery game (the air rifle type); The Gun Library (where guns are displayed, sold AND bought); They actually sell all types of guns (hunting and personal); They sell bows (Mostly Diamond, Bear and PSE); There are food/restaurant areas in there too; There's a small aquarium area with live fish and there are also live giant koi in the pond/stream that sort of surrounds and intertwines with "the Mountain" in the middle of the store. Again, I really enjoy this store--but I enjoy these types of activities (hunting, hiking, etc.) If your husband, BF, Dad or Brother hunts... take him here for a day and bring a credit card (or easily two)! :) PROS: All of the stuff listed above! The MOST camo I've ever seen anywhere in one place GREAT selection of hunting stuff (large game) Great selection of bowhunting/archery stuff You can take your bow or gun into the store to be fitted and use to purchase accessories (you must check it in first). They offer bow services here CONS: pricey (but all of this stuff is) a bit far from Pittsburgh, but the drive really isnt too bad... a little under an hour or so. The food (if you do eat there) was only so-so. We had the burgers and they weren't too good (LOL). The "deals" in the bargain cave aren't really very good "deals", but... they gotta make a buck, too! read more

Every once in a blue moon we venture from SW PA to WV to check out Cabela's. If you like hunting and the outdoors, this is your store. Even though I am not into hunting and guns, it's fun to look around. They have a little general store, a cafe', a shooting gallery, and an aquarium. If I could give it 3.5 stars I would. This was my first time at Cabela's. I live north of Pittsburgh and always had it in my head that it was SO far away, but it actually wasn't a bad drive. I actually enjoyed the experience more as a museum than as a store. They had taxidermied animals everywhere! I don't just mean small animals either. They had bears, lions, and even elephants. Each section contained animals from different regions. They didn't just have them standing around. They were posed in action scenarios. There was even a crocodile with a dead bird in it's mouth. They have a stream winding around the center piece of the store with live fish in it. They also have an actual aquarium you can walk through like you do at the zoo. They have a whole section of the store devoted to record deer mounts! Some of those heads are amazing! The store itself is 2 stories and has both stairs and an elevator to the top floor. The store is very well organized in that it is easy to know what direction to head in for particular items. They even have a bargain area with all of the clearance items in the store. There is a small restaurant upstairs that has a seating area. A plus to shopping here is that their warehouse is just over the hill behind the store. If you don't find what you are looking for in the store, they will look the item up in their computer system and if they have it in the warehouse you can just pay for it and take a slip up to the warehouse where they will have the item waiting for you. All of that said, I don't know if I will go back again. The experience itself was awesome, but once you see it, you've seen it. The prices are no lower and possibly a little higher than places like Gander Mountain or Bass Pro. The only reason I would return was if they had an item that I couldn't find elsewhere. All in all, I believe everyone should go at least once, but unless you live locally, it's not worth it just for a shopping expedition. read more

Ahhhhh.... Nothing like a sunday drive down 70 and coming across Cabela's!!!! If youre into outdoorsy stuff, this is the place for you!!! I dont especially like the outdoors, but i do enjoy the stuffed animals in the place. Every season is represented on the mountain inside.... Love the polar bears and the elephant!!!! There's even an aquarium where you can see turtles getting fiesty with each other.... Check out the cafe and the general store where they have some of the best fudge ever!!!! Theres even a shooting gallery in this place. ( I dont know how many times ornery kids hit me with water here while shooting at a target... good times!!!)
