Thirsty Dog is by far my FAVORITE restaurant in Baltimore! It's a casual place with a simple menu (a few apps and the best pizzas anywhere!) and I can take my dogs. The entire staff is very friendly. The peach beer is delicious...and 2 for $3 can't be beat! My favorite pizza right now is the Wing Dog...with chicken & buffalo sauce...YUM! EDIT: I am so sad that Thirsty Dog, Dog Pub, Pub...whatever...is no longer allowed to permit dogs to enter. "A city Health Department spokeswoman" said that "inspectors issued the warnings only after getting citizen complaints about the presence of dogs at the establishment." Ummmm... if you don't like dogs, don't go to a dog-friendly bar. Idiots! This will always be Thirsty Dog to me. It is sad that they had to change their name, and you cannot bring your dogs in anymore, but their beer is still great, their pizza is excellent, and the atmosphere is hoppin'. It's a nice place to go during the week for dinner, it's not too crowded, but it's never empty. You can get two beers for $3.00 (not sure if that's still the price- I know their food prices have gone up in the last year) and they have a variety of beers from fruity to dark. There are about 10 different kinds of pizza and they are all delicious. It's a good sized pizza for 2 people. On the weekends it can get packed, but if you get there relatively early you can get a booth and have a great time all night. There's also a third floor which is pretty open and has shuffleboard. I've only been to the location in Columbia, this was my first time downtown and I wasn't disappointed! Set up was a little different due to location, but I liked it. Definitely a different atmosphere and each has a different charm. Came in on a Thursday a little after they opened and went straight to bar seating. Staff was super friendly and greeted me right as I walked through the door and made sure to chat me up as soon as I sat down. I forgot the name of the girl who helped me, which is a real shame...cause she was super attentive and personable. Got a pair of blondes which I highly recommend and a pizza. Pizza came out super quick and definitely hit the spot, it's the perfect size to snack on and share...even when you have a free dinner event that you're going to! Lol. A must-see in Baltimore if you're into craft beer, or pizza. Or both, like me. They focus mainly on these 2 things, and they do them super well. Pizzas are excellent and unique. Had the original pizza which was perfect, and they had a Thai chicken pizza as well as many other pizza choices. Beer is cheap, plentiful, and high quality (brewed on site). They have a special where you can get 2 for 1 beers and I was overwhelmed with all of the different choices they had: IPA, Belgian, blueberry, raspberry, amber...so many different choices. Came here on a Sunday for lunch. There was a 22oz cup special where you paid $6 for the cup and your first fill and then (since it was Sunday) $3 refills thereafter. They have a good selection of year round brews plus they had 2 seasonals available, 1 of which was a DIPA. The beer was good, but not great. They also have a full bar available. They have a very expansive Pizza menu and that alone may get me to come back. The "Original" that I had was personal sized, but good enough to share, and it was delicious. Overall, the place was an awesome local place, good atmosphere for hanging out, having a beer, and eating some pizza. The bar area has some TVs as well playing local sports games. Night life here is both fun and affordable! I was pleasantly surprised to find out that beers are only $4.50 and they bring you two every time you order! Another cool thing about their brews is that they encourage mixing your favorite beers. I ordered their "Bloodhound" which was a mix of their raspberry ale with their Irish stout. Obviously the stout makes it a bit heavy, but if you enjoy dark beers I would recommend it. We also ordered a small barbecue chicken pizza for the table. I watched them toss the pizza in the kitchen and they prepared it and delivered it to our table in no time at all. It was surprisingly very good! The crust was flaky and the chicken was flavorful. We find ourselves at Pub Dog often when we are in the Baltimore area. Their location is great if you want a night-cap or pregame. 2 for 1 on all beers! Above average beers (I mean that in a positive way- my husband and I are big beer people) and cheap beers! Pizza- well... I'm from NY/NJ, I can't give them too much props on the pizza but that's not REALLY what they do. Don't go for the pizza but don't be shy if you're there and hungry. The pizza is more like a reason to stay if you're hungry and still vibing the beers. They're also a cheap, topping style pizza. Not bad, not gross, not great. Service has ALWAYS been a delight! Really a place where you smile and laugh even if you pop in for 1 alone and sit at the bar. But man, those bar seats are awkward, fixed to the floor, very far away from the bar (from a short persons perspective). Pizza and beer-- what could be better? Weird pizza and local beer I guess? I don't like beer but I'm a fan of root beer. The root beer was good but pretty flat-- hopefully after we told the waitress that was remedied. They have your run of the mill pizzas but also some less common -- the Thai chicken pizza was good, but I felt it was missing something.. the other pizza we got was solid. We needed a place to hang out while we waited for our reservation at La Scala. Once I discovered that they brewed their own beer, I was sold. It was midday on a Saturday, but they weren't crowded at all. We were seated as soon as we came inside. Our server was friendly and gave us plenty of information about their beer. She made a couple of recommendations based on what we prefer as well. I chose their Blueberry dog. It was light, refreshing and flavorful. I found it kind of odd that when you order a full pint, they bring out two medium sized pints. Naturally, if you wanted something smaller, you would get one medium pint. More of a bar scene than a restaurant, I showed up with a family of 4 ready for pizza! They sat us at a cozy table in the back, and the service was fast, attentive, and friendly, despite the room full of customers in the bar area. The pizza was very good, but nothing that blew our minds. The price point is right on for a place like this. The cocktail and beer selection was very impressive as well, but we didn't partake in any libations :) Overall this is a nice chill place, perfect for grabbing a beer and a bite with friends. My favorite bar ever. An interesting (blueberry) variety of good, cheap beer that they serve two smaller mugs at a time (2 for $3 dog deal). This makes for good times as you pay for a round and pass out a fistful of beers to your friends like an Octoberfest waitress. Some of the best thin crust pizza I've ever had - give the "Fox and the Hound" a go. Wait staff is awesome and super friendly, as is the crowd in there any time I've been (no surprise, this is Baltimore!) And the best part? Dogs! Bring in your dog and have him sit at your feet as you put down your pizza and beer. For those without a canine companion, make a friend and ask about a stranger's dog, because drinking a beer and petting a dog has got to be the most relaxing way to spend a night out. EDIT: It breaks my heart to hear about the name change and the dog ban... my favorite bar ever has been irrevocably changed. The sadness, the heartbreak. Our favorite hang-out while we were living in Baltimore last summer, but after our move back to Baltimore last week, we're hit with two pieces of terrible news: 1) The Thirsty Dog Pub is no longer the Thirsty Dog Pub, but has been forced to change its name to The Dog Pub due to a threat of legal action from Thirsty Dog Brewing Company. Five years of name recognition down the drain - Boooo to the Thirsty Dog Brewing Company - you suck! 2) Even worse - they are now no longer allowed to have dogs in the bar after state liquor board agents told them in May to get rid of all dogs, otherwise they would be closed down. The fact remains that this is still a great establishment, with outstanding beer, which is ridiculously inexpensive, wonderful pizzas, and the friendliest bar and wait staff in the city. Yes they've lost the cool name, and the coolest four-legged clientele, but this place is still cool, and deserves to succeed in the face of this recent adversity. They are opening up a new pub in Columbia in a few weeks which I'm looking forward to making a trip to, but in the meantime, get down to the Thirsty Dog and support what has always been, and will continue to be a great Baltimore institution. read more

A cool pub with a cool name -- as well as accompanying story of how it gained that name* -- which is merely walking distance from Camden Yards. Superb location to pre-game for Orioles' games. Go O's! *There was once a pub dog; but, that is all I remember. He used to hang out at the pub until bureaucracy got involved and he got the boot. Service PB has very attentive and cool waiters. In fact, after spending the day at the shitfest known as Baltimore Zoo, this was a welcome departure from constant disappointment. The witty and personable waitstaff is very knowledgeable regarding the menu, and city. Food & Drinks Pizzas are thrown through a Quiznos' conveyor toaster oven. Very thin slices available in a unique variety of combinations. Just A-OK. Beer is served in miniature pints. Not certain how many ounces are served because I don't travel with kitchen measuring tools. They are little and you will have to drink a lot of them. Just A-OK. Epilogue Overall a great, upstanding ambassador of Baltimore, albeit lacking in selection of higher quality food or libations. read more

I love Thirsty Dog's! (I refuse to just call it "Dog's") Was up at both the original location and the new Columbia location last night (which is closer to where I live)... a lot of Thirsty Dog's action for this one :) Of course, beer is excellent, food is excellent. No more needs to be said about that! Regarding new Columbia location (which probably should have its own page, but I want to make sure folks learn about it!) - it's subjected to the Columbia price hike - it seems prices are $0.50 more expensive than at the Original. 2 beers for $4.00, for example. The bar is EXPANSIVE, which is great if you like sitting at the bar (like I do). I definitely think this is going to be a regular after-work spot for my friends and me. Oh, and we asked the bartender, and they're planning on putting tables and chairs on the patio when it gets back to temperate weather, so furry friends can join you outside :) We only got the beer at the Columbia location, no pizzas, so the jury's still out on how well the new place stacks up to the old, though I have faith they'll measure up. I love Pub Dog! It has a great atmosphere, that is simple and relaxed, and the waitresses are usually right on top of you to make sure you are happy. In all honesty though, I am not a huge fan of their beer. The white dog is the best, but I would much prefer some normal branded beers instead. Their pizza makes up for it though. They always have great pizza, and I have liked all the ones I have tried. The atomic dog and the wing dog are by far my favorites, but I don't think you can go wrong here with the pizza. There are so many bars to choose from in Federal Hill, all seem to be welcoming neighborhood bars, but I highly suggest you make this your first choice. 1. They brew their own beer and it's all pretty awesome. My personal favor tie is their new Chocolate Oatmeal Stout. Just the right amount of chocolate smell at the beginning and taste at the end. Plus they have all kinds of suggestions for mixing their beers (Mixed Breeds) such as Bloodhound: 1/2 stout 1/2 Rasberry. 2. Beers are ALWAYS 2 for $4. For only $4 you and your date both get a beer. Nice. 3. OMG their pizza is awesome. I recommend the Cajun Dog, Tomato Sauce, Shredded Mozzarella, Spicy Cajun Chicken & Sausage, Red and Green Onion and Fresh Garlic. All of them are great though, thin crust and run between $7 and $10. If you're really hungry though, I suggest ordering a whole pizza for yourself. They're more like appetizer size if you're ordering for more than one person. 4. Let's face it, B-More is a sports fanatic town. But sometimes, you're just not that interested in game (only sometimes!). All the other bars in the area seem to focus on televisions, this place only has one TV in the front and if your in the back, you don't even hear the commotion. read more

Kind of a douchey, younger (early-twenties) crowd. And the pizza truly was not that great. For the money I could have gotten a really good pizza elsewhere, maybe Iggies or Facci (in the 'burbs). I can see why it would appeal to a younger crowd. Beers cost $4 for two (mandatory two) mugs. However, I found the beer to have little to no alcoholic effect on me and I have a looooooooow tolerance. The thing I like about this place is it inspired me to leave and find someplace I liked better (The Reserve), a little more off the beaten path. I am officially now a grown up and this part of town (the Cross Street boomtown/bar row) obviously just does not appeal to me any more. By the way, the number of times I used the word "douchey" in referring to/describing Pub Dog - about 4. The total number of times I have used the word douchey at all in the last 15 years (including the 4 Pub Dog related ones) -- about 6. I can't give it a one star ("Never Again") because, technically I would go again. I mean I didn't get poisoned or anything, just didn't like the atmosphere and didn't love the food. But in reality, there are so many better options (for me) within an 8 block radius (including MaGercks, two door up, to which I have been more than once and liked) - nah, I would never go again. read more

Sometimes I just happen to run across a place where I can't wait to run home and yelp about it. Pub Dog is one of those places for me. So as a guy, I feel I'm the target of discrimination....specifically at bars. No, I'm not talking about among the ladies (thanks for believing in me reader) but among bartenders. You jump, shout, make an obscene gesture, they never come. Well I can only sing praises for Pub Dog's Ruthie and Lenny. They were attentive and phenomenal. And it seemed they were genuinely interested in each customer and made small talk with practically everyone, not just the regulars which there seemed to be a few of. So much so that even though I wasn't really hungry, I WANTED to give this place my business so I ordered a pizza, which went great with my buzzedness. The food here is great, and the bill is cheap. I am in Baltimore 2-3 times a year, and always eat here during each visit. However, the last time I was here was a terrible experience. There were four of us total, and we showed up around 8:30. Typically, on a Saturday night, you don't have to wait more than maybe 15 minutes for a table. The place was full, and we hovered over some tables of parties who looked like they were going to leave. While we were waiting, a server oddly try to convince us to leave. She said, "I don't think anyone will leave any time soon. Are you sure you want to stay here?" She told us there was a big group and they like to stay a long time. It turns out, the servers were saving tables for their friends. New parties would walk in and they would meet with the servers and as soon as some from that "big group" would leave, the new people would be seated BY the servers. This is not a big place. They KNEW we were waiting for a table, but because we weren't friends with the servers, we were not seated. For 30 minutes, we would try to jump on a table, but servers would pretend to clean up a table and save it for friends instead. I have NEVER had this experience here before, but this makes me (and the people I went with) never want to show up again. read more

At first I thought the place was closed because they had just opened at 5pm and it seemed dark. It's not as dark after you've been in there for a little but I know my Dad would die. He's always complaining he likes more light. The bar seats are for giraffes or long legged creatures. I kept having to stuff my delicious pizza into my mouth real fast to keep any toppings from falling on my lap. But sitting at the bar is fun. You can chat with the bar tenders and is less isolated than the tables at the back. And they open from 5pm to 2am almost every single day of the year except for 3 holidays out of the year or something ridiculous. They don't get overtime so be nice and really think about tipping if you're there on a holiday. read more

Federal Hill is well known for its bar scene, but many of these bars also offer some great Pub Grub and Pub Dog is no exception. The bar bills themselves as a 'pizza and drafthouse' and rightfully so. In addition to serving pizza, they have their own line of dog themed beers (such as the white dog which I tried and loved.) For dinner one night, a friend and I were craving pizza and wanted to try something different than where we usually go in Federal Hill (Hersh's and Our House.) When we got to Pub Dog, the place was packed which is always a great sign when it comes to a restaurant. We started the meal with Garlic Sticks ($8) and we couldn't be happier with our decision. It was baked Italian Flatbread drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with two types of cheeses and served with a side of marinara sauce for dipping. The portion was fairly large and definitely something I would order again. The appetizer really excited us for the rest of what we ordered. The pizza is personal sized so we each ordered our own. My friend decided to go the traditional route and got the Cheese Dog Pizza and added pineapple chunks ($8). My friend said that out of all of the thin crust pizza joints we have been to this was her favorite. For my pizza, I decided to try something a little out of the box and ordered "The Original" Wing Dog Pizza ($10). This pizza was buffalo sauce, mozzarella, green onion, smoked gouda, spicy buffalo marinated chicken and a size of ranch dressing. Normally, I am a little hesitant about ordering pizza with chicken because the chicken tends to get dried out in the oven but at Pub Dog, the chicken remained moist and flavorful on top of the pizza. Even when we brought home the leftovers and reheated them the chicken still didn't dry out. I would have preferred though if the pizza didn't come with marinara sauce as well as buffalo sauce because that really detracted from the spicy flavor. We finished our meal feeling satisfied and eager to return in order to sample more of their craft beers and excellent pizza. Hate the name change. Screw Thirsty Dog Brewing Company for threatening legal action against a Federal Hill institution. I won't expand upon the 2 for one pricing which I am sure is summed up below, lets talk about everything else. 1) great music. The Dog always had really good indie rock, jazz etc going, and at reasonable volumes. 2) no tv's. (whaaaaa?). Seriously. So as a die-hard sports fan, I wouldn't go to the Dog if I wanted to watch a game. Any other time the beer and pizzas were too good to resist. 3) the staff. Exceedingly friendly. In the two years I lived in Federal Hill there was almost no turnover on the staff. An obvious rarity for those of us that have worked in the restaurant/bar business. 4) this was always my favorite place to take 1st dates. There are people there (guaranteed thing to talk about). The food is awesome, the beers taste great (always help to nudge along the conversation), plus its always good to go somewhere where I knew the staff would take care of me. I hear now you can't bring your dog in (of all the things to worry about B-more), or else that would have been #5. Best pizzas are the wing dog (chicken and wing sauce), the pesto something or other, and finally (personal favorite) "The Dog Pound". Oh, and if you decide to go to a different Federal Hill establishment, you can still stop in and grab a gourmet pizza for your stumble, I mean walk home. 5 stars! I went into Pub Dog with a bit of an attitude. The gimmick was a bit too cutesy for me. Twelve beers of which ten were called [SOMETHING] Dog and pizzas named Pupperoni, Dog Pound and things like that. But what can I say, the beer is good. The Blond Dog is as light and refreshing as advertised. Nothing that seems special but it sure goes down nice and easy after a good aikido class, which I take right around the corner. The White Dog tries to be something of a wheat beer, but it is mostly forgettable. The Amber Dog has a nice golden color, not much of an aroma, though a fairly good taste but with a bit of an acidic aftertaste. There are three fruit beers on the menu (a couple more in bottles are discussed at the end). The Peach Dog has an excellent aroma and a taste that matches it. This is the best of the three fruit beer drafts. The Blueberry Dog, however, has an aftertaste far too sharp and tart to justify its mediocre flavor. The Raspberry Dog had some stiff competition going in, my being a fan of Abita's Purple Haze raspberry wheat and also having left St. Louis with the taste of Schlafly's excellent raspberry wheat still fresh in my mind. How does the Raspberry Dog stack up? Well, it is not as good as either Abita or Schlafly, but not bad. A tad, but just a tad, too sweet (but not enough to disqualify it from being ordered again), its taste is nice though its aroma is better. The Hoppy Dog is an above-average IPA, hoppier than most IPAs with a smooth finish. The Imperial Dog, though, is a double-hopped IPA and is a bit too much for me. As the Hoppy Dog has a good amount of hops, doubling it does not mean making it twice as good. The Thirsty Ale (the only beer other than the seasonal not named as some type of dog) is a typical English style ale. Nothing noteworthy there. The Brown Dog may be the biggest surprise here. Typically not a fan of brown ales, I can take them or leave them, but this one is exceptional. It has a very smooth, subtle taste that is far lighter than I would have expected. This one is a winner. The Black Dog is only average. No fan of Guinness is gonna be happy with this. That rounds out the regular drafts. The seasonal at the time is an Oktoberfest. It was kind of generic. I have had beers like this more times than I can count and really cannot differentiate them. Pub Dog bottles a number of beers in large bottles. Most are the same as those on draft, though there are a couple of new ones. The Very Cherry Ale pours a nice color with a good head but is way too sweet. It actually took some effort to get this one down and I shall not be returning to it anytime soon. Unfortunately, the overly sweet cherry taste also does in the Wild Cherry Porter, also in a bottle. Despite being a porter fan, this one is so overwhelmed by the cherry that the porter gets lost in the background. Oh, and the pizza is pretty good, too. read more

this is my local go-to place when it comes to getting a tasty, home-brewed beer and some solid pizzas. beers come in pairs, 2 for $4. they have a whole bunch of flavored beers (peach, blueberry, raspberry, orange), your classic brews, and hybrids that mix some of the flavors. ahh refreshing! i usually will opt for the spinach pizza. spinach leaves, mushrooms, and BACON BITS?!??! this is it :) love this place. has 3 floors, usually packed on the weekends, and typically great service. they also sell bottled beers that you can take home in unique containers. read more

This is one of my favorite bars - both for the food and the atmosphere. Though I'm not a big beer drinker, they brew the most amazing flavored beer (I'm partial to blueberry) that they serve in two small mugs at a great price. They also make great thin crust pizza, and though I'm a fan of the plain cheese, I've been told that the toppings are great as well. The old "open-to-dogs" policy made this one of the most unique places in Federal Hill (or Baltimore for that matter). Not being a dog owner, it was a great chance to sit and talk with someone who was. And as everyone knows, dogs are a great way to break the ice when meeting someone new. Sadly, the new policy that changed back in May means no dogs allowed, but the food and atmosphere still make it fun. The pizzas here are tasty! It's different from Iggie's (Neapolitan style) but in a pleasant way. My favorites are Atomic Dog, Fox & the Hound, and BBQ chicken pizzas, but I haven't had a terrible pizza. Their own brewed beers are pretty darn good as well. I like Hoppy and Brown Dog the most. The two combined just makes one awesome meal. My only complaint is that it is always jammed pack during peak hours. It's very possible that you can't find seating for hours. I would suggest going early in the evening (like 5 PM early). read more

This place was a great deal and a lot of fun. Beers are ordered by the "dog deal" -- you buy two beers (10oz-ish size) of the same kind at the same time for $4. I especially enjoyed the blueberry and the brown dog. Plenty of seating -- had no problem getting a table on the second floor around 8:30pm on a Friday night. Pizza's are on the small side, but very delicious -- I highly recommend the BBQ chicken pizza. We also ordered the spinach pizza, which I don't think I'd get again -- too much raw garlic flavor (and I love garlic), I don't think that the veggies were cooked before the cook popped the pizza in the oven. The after dinner mints are very cute -- they're stamped "prevents dog breath" on the back. Overall, lots of nice small touches @ pub dog. read more
