Moreover, I had back surgery (microdisectomy at L5-S1) in 2001 when I was 23 and although it mostly resolved my sciatica, I still had occasional lower back pain and persistent twitching in both my calf muscles all day long, presumably due to mechanical instability in my lower spine. Not only was Jo able to completely eliminate my calf soreness with soft tissue work, she was able to also strengthen my core and improve hamstring/hip flexibility. My type of running shoes also likely played into my issue and she provided guidance on a new pair that I couldn't feel more comfortable running in. After about 3 months, I am no longer dealing with lower back pain and only have occasional minor calf twitching (which I know ultimately may never resolve just due to the nature of my surgically repaired back). I've lost 10 pounds in the last 4 weeks or so being able to get back to working out pain free and my normal cardiovascular exercise. I saw Dr. Kayla Serowik and Dr. Christine Frechette for physical therapy, and both of them were amazing. Not only did they show me the exercise to treat my issues, they also helped educate me on what I could do to prevent future injuries. On top of that, they were both incredibly patient and encouraging - therapeutic on multiple levels! I also get sports massages from Michelle Herrmann, and this has been a game changer. I have gone to a wide variety of skilled massage therapists (sports, deep tissue, Thai, etc.), and Michelle is the best, by far. Her massages are so healing and have helped my performance so much, as well as stave off potential injuries! Before going to Wellness in Motion, I really struggled to progress in any sport because I got injured so often. My regular practice with her was a big contributor to my physical and mental well being during some stressful periods that I was not otherwise taking good care of myself. I did duets with her as well as individual classes, and some of her workshops. Helena is kind, funny, and honest. There aren't many people I can start my day with at 7 AM, but she is one. She pushes you to stretch your limits but also encourages you to listen to your body, and watches your body and listens to you. She invests in her equipment and is constantly taking trainings and lessons with other instructors to improve and bring the best back to her clients. She does trigger point massage, which brings the pain and the results. You know that feeling after you chop off several inches of your hair, and your head feels like and you know you look amazing? "That's a separate case, you can only have one case open at a time." That's very convenient if you're a super athlete with one boo-boo who can't wait to get back on the squash court. But what about the rest of us? People who really need help? Well, thankfully I found Sue and I've been seeing her for years. She treats all her patients with the same level of care and therapeutic focus that she'd bring to one of her star athlete patients whose names she is too modest to mention. She has done wonders for my mobility and pain levels, she knows when to push me and when to smush me (she does this neck thing that is straight-up sorcery I swear).
