Terrible place. I've shopped there for years, always loved the place but have since had the single worst experience of my life here while trying to exchange/ return a clearly SPOILED package of puppy food. The owner and terrible manager Instantly yelled at us when we asked for a different package (which they didn't have in stock) and then asked for my money back which they refused. After 30 min they finally agreed to give us our money back and and we were leaving, the manager hopped from behind the desk, and yelled, "NEVER COME BACK" and proceeded to SHUT THE DOOR ON MY BF AND I. THE DOOR WAS ON OUR BACKS AND LEGS because she couldn't just let us leave in peace!!!!! They are a RACIST ESTABLISHMENT and I will be supporting other small businesses. The owner came in and instantly yelled at us, didn't even let us speak. The manager called me rude a number of times and was absolutely horrendous. I abhor having to leave such a negative review because I've chosen to support this place over the years over Amazon NYC PETS, Chewy etc. but the way they treated us was abysmal. Used to come here on a weekly basis to grab stuff for my bunnies. They have essential bedding, food & treats so overall a decent shop to go to in the neighborhood. The cool part is they also have lots of natural or organic treats for all animals and typically the workers there are pretty friendly. They can also order basic stuff for you within the week if they're sold out. They usually have adorable kittens to adopt as well. All in all a cute mom and pop pet shop. read more

I stumbled across this pet boutique on my way home. I am so glad that I did! The staff was very friendly and helpful with the concerns that I had. The gentleman at the counter helped me to find a product that worked for his dog in the past. Prices were affordable compared to a lot of the pet boutiques around NYC. Before I came in, I thought, "wow everything is going to be over priced." This was not the case. I was also happy not supporting a large business such as Petco or Pet-smart (please don't shop there!) They source the best food, supplements and accessories, all while working with rescue groups to save animals from the streets, hurricanes and meat plants. Joan, the owner, and her staff are extremely knowledgeable and since I've adopted 3 rescues through the store over the years, it helps to have access to their expert advice. The store carries the best products and a wide variety, and they keep up! I'm also a cheapskate so I shop where I can get the best prices and PS9 has them. I've compared prices to other stores in the area and online retailers, and the prices at PS9 are almost all cheaper or at least the same price. Worst adoption event ever. I am not sure exactly how the kitten adoption event is related to the store but it is incredibly misleading. I checked in advance and was told there were 7 or so kittens up for adoption. The woman in charge of the adoption had a stick up her ass. Although I explained I had a cat at home she refused to "split" any of the siblings up and would only allow adoption in pairs. (125$/each, 250$ total). Two additional cats is completely different than adopting just one! After playing with the kittens for 15 mins she finally did show me a single cat (separated from the rest) she would be willing to adopt alone. Unfortunately, this kitten was super skittish and afraid...clearly spent too much time with this woman. A person like this paints a bad picture for us cat lovers. She should be working to finding great homes for cats as often as possible. I overheard her discouraging another couple from adopting a cat because, "three cats is as many as she has and anymore is too much". Luckily there are dozens of other cat adoption places (and pet stores) in the area. I had a great experience with Muddy Paws. read more

Joan is certainly the least corporate in mentality of any store owner you will find, and her 'warmth approach' is especially well suited for pet lovers. You won't get rushed along to make a sale if you have questions, but you'll get an honest assessment of any of the products they carry. Also, they carry lots of local talent in terms of unique hand-made stuff available to thrill your little bundle of joy, be it kitty or canine. And personally, before I go spend money at a vet, I'll do a little brain-picking here regarding issues or symptoms my cat may have, because they hear a LOT of stories about things going around with pets in the area, and know a lot about what could be up, which may put your mind at ease. I figured that I'd give this place another try after having witnessed the worst customer service. Since it was a beautiful day outside yesterday I decided to take my dog for an extra long walk with a friend and her dog and we stopped by this little shop again. The same woman, the one that has been mentioned numerous times here, was managing the shop and she was as unpleasant as ever. My friend was trying to find a good sweater for her dog. I was trying to give her some suggestions when the sales woman came over, stood directly in front of me and then continued to talk over me and completely ignore me. She had done this same thing to me a couple of months ago as well but I figured maybe she just had a bad day or something! Nope, seems she just really rude. Then, another dog came into the store and she told me to move and that I shouldn't stand where I was standing with my puppy, it was then that I decided to leave and never come back! Add to that they are totally overpriced! I needed dog shampoo and found the same stuff a couple of blocks away at NYC Pet for $3 less. So why would I pay more money for awful costumer service where I feel totally unwelcome? They may be trying for that "look" of a local neighborhood type place but they're totally missing the mark when it comes to neighborhood niceties! read more

I can't believe it has taken me so long to write this review but I have nothing but glowing things to say about the staff and this shop. I've been bringing and shopping for my dog here for nearly 4 years now. After getting my dog Winston, I was shopping at NYC Pet (it's fine, nothing unique or outstanding) but then I discovered PS9 Pets and have never gone anywhere else since then. If there is any dog food that you are looking for and they don't carry they can order it for you. They carry all the high quality and premium brands of natural dog food and even carry raw. They carry high quality supplies and even some fun toys and products you wouldn't see at your typical pet store. Joan and Lisa are amazing, knowledgeable and the service they provide is above and beyond my typical expectations. I can't gush enough about this place. The prices are a little higher than purchasing online, but I'm an advocate for small business and you pay for what you get, which is great service and people who know you and your pet. Every time I walk in with Winston they always give him treats and give him tons of attention. My dog LOVES this place!! I think I've posted a review before, but was thinking it was good time to RE-review as PS9 moved recently from it's old location [ 2 stores down] and now has so much more visability-YAY!. PS9 stands out as a locally owned and operated business that never shies away from supporting the pet community that it serves. I can't tell you how many stray dogs have ended up in her shop trying to find their "mommies". The staff is always available to try to help answer your nutrition and health questions and suggest a course of action, food or product. Additionally the "couch" is a nice spot to park yourself with your pet and catch up on the neighborhood news. MY BEST advice is to go in and INTRODUCE yourself-they are that kind of store. xox read more

Great place with extremely helpful staff! I recently moved here from out west and my dog is use to eating a certain Canadian food that I can't find anywhere in NY. I went to this place and talked with the owner and sales girl who was working and they immediately got on the phone with the distributor to find out how they could stock this food for me. So not only did they bringing in a whole new product for my spoiled dog, but then they helped me pick a different brand that would be comparable until they received my brand. read more

The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. My dog had murderous farts (Squishy-faced dog problems), like I'd have to open all my apartment windows and leave bad, and they helped me sort out a food brand for her that finally subsided her fart-attacks. I felt compelled to write this review given the unfairly negative comments below. I have always had positive experiences shopping here and the customer service has been great. When my vet failed to diagnose my dogs intestinal issues, the staff here recommended a lower protein food (that was cheaper too) and ever since then my dog has been much happier. Our little pup is a really picky eater and she has a large variety of high quality pet foods for him to eat. We always find interesting snacks, toys and clothing for our dog and he never stops wanted to come here! I don't know why anyone would give this place a negative review... Best pet shop around! I'm not sure what the other reviewers are talking about when they say this place has bad customer service and the people are rude - maybe they're just the awkward ones. I'm in here all the time and the staff couldn't be any friendlier or helpful! As for the items being overpriced - that's not true. I've gone to other places in the area that charge more for the same items... they don't overly mark up their prices. Every dog in the neighborhood knows PS9 and their owners a lot of times can't walk down this street without going in - they give the dogs treats each time they come in and it's the good stuff (not cheap milk bone treats)! Not only is the staff friendly and well educated in pet matters they're also big players in the community for helping abandoned, stray or unwanted pets. I can only give this place praise! read more
