On August 2004 I took many photographs of our celebrating our 20th anniversary in Honolulu. The pictures were lost in a electronically dead SD card. Took a week to examine the problem and quote me, then sent me a ridiculous quote 5x higher than another place downtown ($2000 for a $500 job). I told them I'll go elsewhere for repair, then they took another week to return my examined drive back to me. They said they'll let me know when I can pick it up, but for some reason instead they mailed it to a UPS pickup center UNDER THE WRONG NAME, so UPS would not let me get my package. I had to go through a series of phone calls to track this down and figure out how to get it. UPS finally decided to ship my package to my apartment address, which doesn't have a doorman and is very risky to try to receive valuable items this way. I'm still waiting on my hard drive so I hope I finally get it (4 nightmarish weeks later after putting it in their hands). read more

My computer and USB device was attacked by the locky ransomware virus in February. All my valuable data was stored on my USB and, of course, within a short matter of time, encrypted and held for ransom. It's on the pricey side --very pricey-- BUT they recovered 100% of my data and saved me months of rebuilding and recovering what I presumably lost. Had a 1TB NAS drive that failed. After an exhaustive search and looking through countless yelp reviews I decided to go with Proven Data Recovery. With all the horror stories out there I was apprehensive to say the least. I started by emailing them which created an online case that I could track. It was convenient for me that I could drop the drive off at their office in midtown Manhattan. The case said I would get an update 2-3 business days so after not receiving one on the 4th day I started to wonder. Later in the day it arrived. $2477! I fell out of the chair. I didn't think the drive had a catastrophic failure that needed rebuilding that would drive the price up that high. Since I needed the data I decided to proceed. I called the tech to see why it was so expensive. He responded that the amount of time to resolve the issues and the size of the drive contributes to the cost. After a week I received news that they recovered 100% of the data, so that was good news. After verifying the data recovered I received an invoice. Surprising they charge 3% for using a credit card, $15 to get your original drive back. So I used a check and asked for the $15 to be waived since I would be picking up the drives in person, which they agreed to. Arriving at the office to pick it up I noticed a beat up box with random bubble wrap with my drive, power cable and new drive. At that price point I really would have expected a cleaner presentation that that. All in all a good service, professional phone service and they did get all my data back. With a little bit of polishing up this could be a 4 star review. read more

After bringing my laptop to the GeekSquad at BestBuy and wasting my money and time, I called a few data recovery places and decided to go with these guys because they were the nicest on the phone and didn't sound like they were going to rip me off. I was right! Not only did they recover all of my info from a hard drive that the GeekSqaud made worse by running too much, but they delivered the items I needed in less than 48 hours in order to file my taxes and not miss the deadline, without charging me an additional rush rate! I submitted my hard drives, a RAID, that was being used as a shared server at our small office. The hard drives weren't being recognized by our computers. There didn't seem to be any physical damage, but we weren't sure. In the end, PDR NYC quickly recovered all the data and placed it in a brand new hard drive and delivered it to our office. When I originally posted this review, it was removed. To clarify, our service contract was with the New York office and I have the documentation to prove this. In addition, most of my correspondence was with the New York office. Therefore, I am reposting this review here. Maybe it's bad luck, but we had a terrible experience with Proven Data and their recovery services. Our 64GB microSD card had invaluable data on it. Due to a crack in the card, we were told it would be an extensive recovery process with a quote of approximately $2400 (we were able to negotiate the price down to $1300). I trusted Proven Data due to their impeccable reviews and A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau. I should have gone elsewhere. First, halfway through the recovery I was sent an errant email with a quote for a similar recovery that was less than half of our initial quote (~$900). Second, they were not able to recover our data. I was told this was due to the crack and a manufacturer's encryption. I asked specifically, "what is the current condition of the card?" I was told the card would be returned in a similar condition to how it was submitted. Once the card was returned, we took the card to the recovery company recommended by Sandisk, where they told us the card was unrecoverable due to a large burn in the components of the card, which was not present when we first dropped the card off (I have pictures to prove this!). Proven Data did not mention this burn to us at all anywhere during the process. When I finally reached the technician (after over a week of trying), I was told to "stop harassing the staff". After a brief argument, I explained my concerns, and was told the burn was due to unsuccessful soldering. I was granted a return of my $40 evaluation fee, which is insignificant compared to the value of the data we lost. Proven Data's contact alleviates them of all responsibility, and there is nothing I can do about the damage they have caused to my card. To top things off, when we picked up the damaged card, the receptionist in the office handed us a USB that was not ours. After repeatedly telling the receptionist the USB was not ours, she unsuccessfully tried to reach a technician to clarify. She told us to take the USB drive because she was told to do so (not her fault). We still have this USB drive. This is someone else's data and a HUGE privacy violation, despite their claim to provide complete privacy. All in all, terrible experience and my fiancé was literally in tears after hearing what happened to our SD card. NEVER AGAIN. Back up your data people! read more

I hate to write a bad review considering how much I appreciate the skilled labor that goes into hard drive data extraction. However, for those in NYC who have paid projects on the line, rather than family photos, let me share my experience with this company. I work near this Madison/57th Street location, which is why I chose it. The office has a sense of great professionalism, versus the smaller and more chaotic offices I've seen from other Data Recovery services. This presentation, however, does not remotely match the service provided. The secretary, god bless her and I wonder if she is even employed by Proven Data, is about as unhelpful and disorienting as computer automated customer service phone call. I had to act like a jerk just to impress upon her that I needed hard drive repair. The next step was starting a case, which I had to do on my laptop (thankfully I was carrying a personal computer to complete this person to person transaction), and I then had to hand over my hard drive that would be sent to a facility for it to be assessed. Ok, fine. I received an email, which is actually a link to a secure site that logs communication, and the quote was a thousand dollars more than I received from a different Data Recovery Service. So I declined the offer and made plans to pick up the hard drive the next day. When I arrived back to Proven Data, I had to walk around the hallways looking for the aforementioned secretary. Where is she? After about 20 minutes, she returned, and my hard drive was NOT THERE. Proven Data had emailed me a few hours before with a new quote and the assumption that I would take this offer. So here I am, on a Friday afternoon at 2:30 PM with no hard drive and the company offering to either mail it to me in Brooklyn (yeah, right) or have it available on Monday morning. And this if for data I need extracted ASAP for a paid project. I get on the phone with a customer service agent, who pleasantly assures me that they have not tried to hold my drive hostage and force my hand, but this is exactly how it played out. I agreed because I was in a tight spot and Proven Data made that spot ever so much tighter. So lets cut to the quality work performed on my hard drive. Oh, they got the data off all right. End of week one, I get an email saying that recovery was a success. I was elated, maybe this company isn't diabolically screwing me, despite all signs to the contrary. I email back, saying great, when can I pick up the drive from Madison/57th. Not yet. Ok. I wait a few more days. Nope, still can't get the drive. Mind you, I'm aware of the time span they give for these projects - 6 to 10 days. It had taken the first 6 days just to hear back that the data recovery was a success. On the 10th day, I'm being told that I still can't get the drive. I get a phone call - the data is transferring slowly. I have to call my producer, who had returned from vacation, and she is furious. At this point, I could have rebuild the entire project and now we're looking at the delay of me not being able to finish this up over the 4th of July weekend. Proven Data says it will be done by July 6th. Let me restate that this case was opened on June 10th. I write Proven Data an email telling them how unimpressed I am with this timeline and the fact that I am losing this freelance job and a relationship with a producer over this mess that had started almost a month prior. When you factor in weekends, Proven Data will really eat up your time. I get a phone call, again on a Friday afternoon, that they can overnight the drive to me. Honestly, at this point I should have just told them to eat it and not paid for the work. I wish I could have, but I was so fried by the entire experience, the frustration of watching the clock tick day after day and knowing that I had been ensnared in a Faustian bargain at my profound expense. I knew that my frustration was not going to make it easy for me to rebuild an entire editing project over a holiday weekend just to spite them and to save myself $1,100. So I paid it, because I am not sure what kind of highly paid legal team they have at their disposal, and the option of not getting the drive and still being out the money was worse than settling on a hot Friday afternoon before a three day weekend. So, video, web, or other digital professionals with broken hard drives, you can learn from this tale and take your needs to a smaller company that understands deadlines and builds their reputation on professional relationships and customer service. I'm not sure what kind of shadowy silicon work farm this company operates, but you'd probably feel more secure communicating with the Wizard of OZ. read more

All the boss's files became encrypted with Globeimposter 2.0 (..726 ext) ransomware. Needless to say, he was not happy. This was an office computer with mostly client relevant data, including more than 10 years of archived email correspondence. Proven Data Recovery was awesome. They were able to decrypt and restore all the files on his computer. While they are pricey, it was worth it in the end with a 100% success rate. As a bonus, our business insurance policy covered the cost. Just want to add that we reported this to FBI computer crimes and you should too, if this happens to you. If you're reading this review, you've probably had a devastating hard drive failure. For me, it was the 4tb video backup drive that was unfortunately manufactured in the Raid O configuration. When the drive failed, I spoke to many people about the nature of the problem, and frankly very few sounded like they had any idea what I was talking about. Then I called Proven Data Recovery. Mark convinced me in 5 minutes that he completely understood the problem. I dropped the drive off the next day, and a few days later they let me know that had been able to recover everything, and I was given a code to be able to remotely access the drive to see that everything was indeed there! The cost, while certainly not cheap, was the cheapest I was quoted, and worth every penny to have my Irreplaceable files back! read more
