Alex is the best! My external hard drive failed with 1TB and hundreds of hours of work on it - I was not optimistic about recovering anything. Alex is a real gem. Like many people I saw the unhinged review by Martin D. and had serious misgivings about trusting Alex with my 2 terabytes worth of photos that needed to be recovered. My gut told me that review was a bit off and so I went with my gut and trusted my precious memories to Alex and I have zero regrets. His prices are reasonable. Alex kept me in the loop the entire time and was quick to inform me of the progress he was making. I didn't have an extra drive to give him for backing up but that didn't slow anything down. Alex took care of getting me an extra drive and basically took care of everything like a pro. Within a day or so I had everything back and as good as new. But Alex didn't stop there! When I went to pick up the drive he asked me about how I'm backing things up and gave me a few pointers and even gave me some insight into why these newer physical drives keep failing (hint they are making them too small). As if that wasn't enough he told me would hold on to a backup of my files for a little bit to make sure I got everything backed up properly once I got home. And a few weeks later he actually followed up to make sure that everything was good and that I had properly backed up the files. Since I've posted my review the owner of this company has sent me a bunch of redicoulous excuses and stories to hide his deceptive operation, other than somehow getting my review filtered. At this point, I have confirmed that his amazing recovery-expert claims were nothing but a set of many lies from a con-man. He's simply pulling a bate-and-switch scheme. 1. By the looks of it, there is no question that he has a bunch kids creating fake Yelp accounts and writing fake 5 Star reviews. He also some how got my honest review filtered. 2. I never seen anyone continuously deliver one lie after another like this guy. For example: He just wrote me a message claiming that Yelp added the "Request a Quote Feature in April" and that since then he "can't disable it"; when I told this to another company (who is recoverying my hard drive) they they laughed and showed me how easy it was to disable it (in 3 seconds) by clicking that feature off on Yelp. There is no question that this guy is a pathological lying con-man. I'd bet my yacht on it. One thing you might find interesting (that will further prove this) is this review somehow being filtered out of left field, a day after I post it. Incredible customer service and results! Alex was such a dream to work with. He was transparent from the beginning of the process and walked me through each step of the recovery. I dropped off two drives to be recovered, one from my MacBookPro (2008 model) and the other from an iMac (2011). A few days later I brought the drive to Alex, who kept in constant communication with me throughout the recovery process. My experience with Data Recovery Experts was great! I inadvertently corrupted my 1TB HDD with a lot of media files. I reached out to DRE for help and they provided a basic price range based on the issues I described. I dropped off my HDD for a detailed diagnostic and an exact quote. After the diagnostic I was informed that my data was recoverable and was given a reasonable quote, still a bit pricey for me but hey...how much is your data worth to you? I had a failed hard drive for which I get an estimate from another business of $1500 to recover the data . I declined and instead went with DRE as they quoted me $750. They attempted to replace a part twice and failed, recovering nothing. I then sent the hard drive back to the first business and was told that the media, which had only slight damage before, was now completely unrecoverable. Of course I have no way of judging this for myself, but now I deeply wish I had gone with the more expensive estimate from the other service. read more

GREAT WORK, BAD BUSINESS First of all, Data Recovery Experts retrieved ALL my lost (and presumed "dead") data, and I am thrilled and grateful for that. On the other hand. After waiting over a month to get my stuff back (holidays were a factor) I was very eager when I got the call that all was at last ready. At no point along the process, from my initial meeting in person, to our conversations on the phone, to the email I received from DRE do I ever recall being told that I would be penalized OVER A HUNDRED DOLLARS above and beyond my charge just for using my credit card instead of cash. The cost of the repair was almost a thousand dollars and that is a LOT of cash to carry around; it never occurred to me that this would be expected of me or I would be fined exorbitantly. It's possible this stipulation was mentioned in passing but I truly don't remember it. At any rate, I believe it should have been something made VERY clear and stressed. For several reasons I miserably accepted the fine: I had waited so long for the data and the next morning was going to travel out of town for several days; such a large amount I could not access from a nearby ATM and thus would have had to go directly to my bank, a small community institution very far uptown; if I had undergone this inconvenience I probably would not have made it back to DRE before they closed for the day. I don't believe credit card purchases should be fined, and if they are certainly not at such outrageous rates. And if this is the case, then I believe customers should be very clearly warned of such a dreadful penalty. The charge for recovering my data was quite steep but I accept my responsibility for not having properly backed up my information. I do NOT believe I should be penalized, in the 21st Century, by a legitimate tech business for not assuming that a $950 charge was a cash-only deal. read more

Their client service is shocking, I gave them my hard drive over a month ago, I should have received a call after ten days letting me know what the status of my hard drive was but I never received any call. I've kept calling them since and I only got a very vague explanation (word by word "things are complicated, I'll ask the technician and I'll call you later". And to this day, I still haven't heard anything from them. In fact, I've called them and they keep telling me that they'll email/call me that afternoon but they never do. As I say, it's been a month and I still don't know what the status of my hard drive is or whether they'll fix it, but it's been so long that I can't take it some place else now. I went to DRE because my hard drive failed when I was doing a software update on my computer. The update erased the contents of the computer and the hard drive was the only other location with my data. When it failed, I found DRE on yelp and the reviews were very positive so I went ahead with the data recovery process with them. The administrator/manager contacted me right away and organized a drop off. He sent an email shortly after with a diagnosis and quote for the recovery. He also called me to verbally explain the details of what the recovery would entail and what were the possible causes of the hard drive failure. Once we agreed to go ahead with the process, the data recovery person began their work and about a week after that, I got a call to come pick up the recovered data. We sat down together and I realized that some stuff was missing. Both the data recovery person and the manager were really nice about it; they said that they would continue working and assured me that they would try their best to recover everything at no additional cost. They had a doubt about whether the format of the transfer hard drive I provided was causing an issue, so they personally got a new hard drive from the store on my behalf. They recommended it because of quality, and the price was reasonable as well. While the data recovery continued, the manager would reach me by phone and give me updates on the process. It was great that they were always available to answer questions and address concern. Finally, I was called in when the full recovery was done. We went over stuff together to make sure that everything I needed was there and I stayed a few minutes to copy the most important stuff back onto my computer right away. How many times do you hear the word "back-up" nowadays? I mean it's all over the tech media, right? But when a hard drive does bad that's when it hits you. What would have been the cost of an extra hard drive compared to all the panic, trouble, and headache you'll need to go through in order to resurrect your data? Oh did I panic! After all, my "full proof" back-up system just gave up on me, and about 700GB of data (all my family's pictures and videos) were about to wave goodbye... Then I pulled myself together (or whatever was left of me, anyway) and started looking for companies providing data restoration. There are many of them, apparently, but the majority are doing just computer repairs (replacing parts). I realized that restoring data from a dead hard drive is actually expensive, and some time VERY expensive. I'm a photographer and I never write reviews. But I feel I owe these guys, sort of like you'd owe the heart surgeon after saving you from a heart attack. I mistakenly deleted a whole photo shoot and called these guys in tears after I realized what I had done (I found them on yelp). There are no words for how happy I am with their service. My computer crashed and I lost some important recent data that wasn't backed up (lesson learned!). I took my hard drive to 2 other places who told me it was hopeless and the data were unrecoverable. Data recovery experts were able to recover every single file in less than a week. I've honesty never had so much love for strangers. These guys saved me!! They were also very professional, reasonably priced, and very quick.
