Never ever ever go here. It was cheap, fast (when not busy) and I've been going here for 10 years but I've had enough. For the third time in about a year, one of their hair "stylists" have horribly ruined my hair. I had a simple feauhawk every time, but this certain stylist always does the opposite of what you tell her. I went tonight and asked to ensure that my hair wasn't short as I was to be married in TWO WEEKS. I needed it just trimmed so I could have a better stylist take care of it a few days before my wedding. I asked for a "5" in terms of the sides and back, instead... she used a zero. Now the sides of my head are almost bold and there was no other way to fix it while she was cutting my hair as it was too late. She was super quiet as I paid her (I shouldn't have) and unfortunately I feel she knew exactly what she was doing, knowing that it was wrong. I plan to call the business owner to complain and get a refund in the morning, but everyone should BEWARE. They don't even clean their brushes that they use at the tail end of your cut. Simply unsanitary. Look at the picture I've included. She's the one to the very right. Avoid. Someone should take away her license and report this business to the BBB altogether. read more

Been coming here since I was a little kid to get my haircut, they never disappoint I've always had long thick hair and they always know how to style it, to where I can have my long hair with my volume they also always do a beautiful job on my moms hair to where her hair is always full of volume even when they do the touch ups on her hair, it never looks dry or brittle and she's always had highlights for 12 years, this place is worth the price, even with the pandemic going on they set it up very convenient for everyone. I'm a fan of this place. Sure, it's across the bay from where I am, but it's simple, cheap, quick, and has no frills. Even with a packed shop, I think I may have waited 15 minutes max. Let it be known that this place specializes in fades. If you want something outside of a standard fade, YMMV. There's typically 3-6 ladies working at a time, cranking out the haircuts with the quickness. I've noticed some inconsistencies amongst the crowd, but just know you get what you pay for! read more

You really pay for what you get. We mainly came here because my stubborn boyfriend doesn't want to pay more than $14 for a haircut and scoffed at the idea of paying $20+ for one downtown Walnut Creek. Soooooo I took him here for his $8 haircut. Bad idea to come here on a a Saturday afternoon, it was packed. Boo them for not having a sign in sheet. It was total chaos and a couple people that came in after we had got their hair cut before he did. Also, don't come here thinking this place is clean, cuz ick it isn't. But I suppose if you're a guy coming in here solo it ain't so bad. You definitely want to leave your lady at home, and don't bother thinking you can leave her in the car either, this place is sketch and is smack dab right next to hourly place with spa suites if you catch my drift... So the reason for the 3 stars? This place gave my boyfriend the best cut I've seen him with since we've been together. These ladies know how to do a fade. I hate writing bad reviews but here it goes. I came here to get a simple trim because I was letting my hair grow and I wanted to keep it healthy all the way to the tips. This lady did not listen to a word I said. I told her just a trim, to cut as little as possible & she cut my hair into horrible layers (she's picture on one of the pictures with her hair in a pony tail) She cut my hair in about 5 minutes to move onto the next customer. While I appreciate the inexpensive haircut, you are prone to getting infections or diseases at this location. The barber not once sprayed her blades to sanitize, Clean her station, and kept a single rag that she uses to wipe EVERYONE with. After half way through, I realized how disgusting she was because I was noticing she was using some of the equipment she used on someone else that she never cleaned and the machine was covered with so much hair and who knows what else was on it. She couldn't understand why I didn't want her touching me with the same rag she has used for the last few people she helped already. I felt disgusted and hurried home to shower immediately and felt like I needed to shower with Lysol after this experience. When you go, pay attention to these details. The first review that I made is supposed to be with Star Cuts (5 stars). I got confused since both salons were owned by the same owner. I shouldn't have gone here, since Star Cuts don't accept credit cards and I really need to have a trim as my hair is already dry and split at the ends. The old Vietnamese lady clearly is irritated. No patience. She combed through my eyes, ears and my entire face. Her long nails dugged through my scalp. I didn't even have any specific instructions to make her job hard, just a layered trim for get the dry parts out. She seemed so irritated, keeps on sighing and talking with other staff in Vietnamese. My hair is thick and she pretty much just razored all of it, and it was really painful. I have to tell her to use at least some shears to make the ends well cut. She just responded to me, "What? Later." Then continued razoring my hair. Worst part is, she took all her combs, clips, razors on the SOILED container (labeled SOILED). By 5 mins, she's already done with my cut. Why, because someone who apparently she knows went in for a haircut. She's rushing it. She even cut my hair too short. I regret going to this place. Was here yesterday(Sunday) after they opened bout 9am. Figured the haircutters would be fresh and ready to fade. There were 5 people already ahead of me, but the wait was less than 10 minutes. As for the cut, I got a medium bald fade with a 2 all around. They can't fade/blend well. You can still see the line around my head. As for the lineup in the front, it was crooked. Overall, It's not how the $16-$20 barbers cut hair. But you get what u pay for in the $8. read more

Took no more than 10 minutes to cut my hair, and a lot of uneven spots. Worst of all she stabbed the back of my ear. Oh yea, they don't clean their clippers or shears after use, so I kept smelling the previous guy's nasty hair smell. By all means, I'm not picky about hair cut as I usually pay $12 for mine in the city. However, at least they clean their shears and clippers after each client. Will not go back to her ever again. If I can give this place 0 star, I sooooo would!! Service is horrible! They just want to cut your hair and take your money and be done with! Details: I came in and was not even greeted. Sat down in their waiting section for 3 people before. When it was my turn I ask the stylist, her name was Yen, can she cut my hair according to the pictures I showed her. She said "YES" then she started to explain to me how she's going to cut it and already her description sound nothing like the picture. I showed her the pictures again and she said yes I can do it. Then I ask do you need me to put the picture on the table so you can model it? She said no. And her first cut screw the whole thing up!!! My hair style is medium long and she cut it as short as a spiky hair cut! I ask her does that look like the picture? And she said "well its already done" she basically shave one side of my head, I can't walk out or do anything else so I just told her just stick as close to the picture as you can and put the picture on the table for her to look at. In the end my hair look like it was shave, no style, nothing!!! I actually had a hair style before I came in here! Now I'm practically bald! The owner (Cathy) is their most skilled stylist but the other regulars are almost just as good. They ALWAYS have a few new faces that I'm leary of. If you go during peak times expect a fairly long wait. Parking is easy as there's a big parking lot in the back, spaces on the side, and street parking as well. But for the last couple of visits it feels like I keep getting stuck with the same lady that nobody wants. Maybe it's because she: -Talks on her cell phone while cutting my hair. -Uses something that feels like a horse brush! Ouchies. -The entire haircut took less than five minutes. And as my search continues for me to find someone that knows how to handle hair, I stumble upon Proper Cuts. Walking in, I see nobody. When I say nobody, there are no customers and no staff. That alone should have set off a red light. In fact it took nearly 5 minutes for someone to greet me because one of the barbers (who actually made eye contact and saw me enter) was out front smoking a cigarette. She told me to sit but didn't even bother to wash her hands. I refused her service and asked somebody else perform my cut. An older gentleman ushered me into a different chair and asked what I'd like done. I pulled out my phone and showed him several pictures and a detailed description of how I'd like my cut. The haircut itself was satisfactory, but my major concern were that his tools (scissors, combs, brushes) were just sitting in a small basket. Were they sanitized? Had he used them on somebody else before I arrived (doubtful, as the place was dead, but the point still stands)? After the haircut, which I wasn't disappointed with, I asked him to *trim* my beard. With 6 months of growth, I was fairly proud with the length of it. Again I showed him several pictures and a detailed description of what I wanted done. As he seemed capable with handling my hair, I was sort of confident that he would treat my beard with the same respect. And as anyone with a full beard will tell you, placing your trust in someone with it is not a thing we take lightly. What happened next was one the most horrific experiences of my life. The barber ignored absolutely everything I said proceeded to SHAVE half of my beard off without a second thought. 6+ months of growth gone in three minutes. All I could do was sit there in shock as he completely destroyed all the time and effort I took to get it to the length that it was. To say I was furious would be too kind of a word. I was 5 seconds from beating the life out this guy. For $12, I pretty much got my money's worth. But to add insult to injury, the barber had the audacity to ask for a tip. Proper Cuts gets 2 stars out of me, if only because the haircut itself wasn't terrible. But after the atrocious and, in my opinion, a malicious disregard in the handling of my beard, I can't in good conscience recommend this place to anyone, even if you are on a budget. read more

Anyway, first place ive gotten a haircut outside of the house. My moms been cutting my hair since i was born and finally at 18 she was just too busy to do it. So a bro of mine who got his cuts here recommended here. So i did it and it took a couple tries to find out which hairstylist was the best, and the one chick with the braces who cut my hair for awhile before "Lyn" moved to sacramento, so Lyn started giving me my cuts. I trust her enough that i can close my eyes while she cuts. Everyone here is skilled, just be careful with the lady with a lazy eye on the left side when you walk in, i got a bad haircut from her once, ever since ive always requested "Lyn" to cut my hair. haha read more

Finding a cheap Asian barbershop in the east bay that does decent fades/tapers is tough but this place gets the job done. Definitely not black barbershop quality however they do charge less than half of the standard $20 barbershops. 2016 update: Prices has increased slightly, $10 for taper and $9 for a fade, still awesome quality for the price. I used to go all the way to S.F. for my haircuts as I didn't trust just any place to cut it, especially after a couple of nightmare experiences(OMG Supercuts you are terrible LOL) in my search for a new place. I went to this place once a long time ago and I guess I had bad luck as the person didn't cut it to my liking, so I went back to S.F. for my cuts. Fast forward a couple of years and I try Proper Cuts again and low and behold it's VERY decent and I haven't had to go back to S.F. ever since! Typically you get in with not much of a wait and usually there are 4-5 hair cutters working. I do have a particular hair cutter that I request everytime, however I can see most of the other hair cutters seem to do a good job, especially with all the serious fade requests. The cost is terrific at $8 average for the guys and their skill level is excellent. Thanks to them I save $, gas and time. To top it off even my MOM goes there now and to the same hair cutter I see! LOL! Be kind and tip these nice ladies! = ) BTW, Star Cuts on the same block is an extention of this place. I haven't tried it though. Love this place! read more

I am a woman who has gone to many different hair salons and I have paid from 8 dollars to 100.00 for just a hair cut. I had heard that the more expensive salons are worth the extra money but usually they do no better than Cathy, although I may get a coffee or flavored water out of the deal. Quality barber=great, quantity=6 stations, timeliness= no waiting and fast haircut. This place meets all requirements for a men's haircut. They are good, fast and cheap. I arrived at 9:15am with my 2y/o son. He was seated immediately. They were friendly and patient. We were out by 9:30 with lollipop in hand. $7 for the cut+ tip. At the time we were there, 4 other young boys and dads were there. They received good looking fades. A solid barbershop. Not intimidating or sexist...so a mom can also feel good taking her son. Now, the final test...when we got home, my husband approved of the end result! He's now going to try them too for himself. Yay we found our new barber. Recommend for a men's cut! read more

This place has been here for ages, I pop in from time to time as my back up spot. Cheap prices and decent haircuts. It works, it's manageable, and with my hectic schedule with work and kids they are convenient. You don't really get to choose your stylist, and back in the days you were charged a dollar so you get who you get. Not sure if they still charge but, I'm older now so I'm not as picky. I'm mindful since I have a picky teenager so I watch who can do the style he wants and hope to get them for his haircut. For eight bucks you can't beat it. They are quick and convenient, with the location being by some of my favorite hotspots you can get a bite to eat at the same time. read more

I've been coming here for haircuts for over 15 years. This place is hit or miss obviously based on which person is available to cut your hair. The stylists are usually nice and work quickly, so you don't spend much time in the chair. Most of the time I get a pretty good haircut...but on one or two occasions I've left looking like Mark Davis. Those couple of times, and the suspicion they don't clean the combs and equipment well, knocked two stars off of my rating. I do not recommend coming here! My bf and I both wanted a haircut and when we entered, they just assumed only my bf wanted one, and I sat there waiting for them to ask me if I wanted a haircut too. I tried to call them multiple time and made eye contact with the other workers and all they did was talk to each other in their language and just don't even communicate with other customers. There was three of them and we were the only customers there. While my bf was getting a haircut, one employee was just on her phone while talking to the other worker, and then the other worker was the one who kept looking at me while talking to her coworkers but didn't even ask me about if I wanted a haircut. At first I thought it was only for men to get haircuts here but then I saw the pricing list and it included women too. Then another couple came and again, the worker only assumed the guy was getting a haircut, and didn't at least ask the girl. Overall, customer service sucks here. Employees always talking shit and are always in a rush. If you're looking for a place to get a nice haircut, there is a nice one in Union City in Alvarado Blvd, I can't remember the name but every time I went with my bf for a haircut, they are super nice. They also have better tools for hairstyling for men and women. It is located near Rite Aid. And btw the only reason why my bf and I went here was because it was closer to home but we won't be coming back here since my bf didn't like it here either. read more
