I was referred to Professional PT by my surgeon after a bicep tendon repair that left me immobile and with nerve damage that meant I had no wrist or finger inflexion and no opposable thumb. My insurance provider had sent me an outdated list of physical therapists. I was looking for one in my hometown area but had no luck. I did my own searching and found Erich LaFalce representing Professional Physical Therapy online. I called back my insurance provider and asked if they could scan to see if he would be covered in my network. He was and even though he was in Boston, Professional Physical Therapy was really easy to get to. Just a train ride to get there at Copley and they were right across the street. In the beginning my issues were very, very painful and I lost a lot of sleep at night. After weeks of committing to the physical therapy I have healed well and am able to function normally and sleep without pain now. I am so grateful to Erich and Trish for working with me and making me better. Everybody there at P.P.T. was so nice. The atmosphere is pleasant and comfortable and not in the least intimidating. The view of the area is also nice if you're working out near the windows. Short of setting up a ProEx shrine, lighting daily incense, and conjuring up some physical therapy chant, I'm a big fan:D. Months of living in my unsupportive Sorel winter boots (and not realizing they were wreaking havoc on my feet) had led to my left foot hurting constantly after standing for more than 15 minutes, or walking even half a mile. I'd throw on my sad face and beg people for their seats at bars, wince at the thought of having to walk for more than 10 minutes at a time, and wonder why my foot hurt even in those super unfashionable, but unbelievably supportive sneakers. This led me to three months with a podiatrist who had recommended custom made orthotics, generic orthotics, and had put me in a walking boot/AirCast, which ended up causing pain / Posterior Tibial Tendonitis in my right foot. Follow that with a useless visit with an orthopedic doctor who dismissed my pain as "it's probably plantar fasciitis, just stretch it and it'll go away", and left the room before I even got a chance to respond or ask questions. Three months of pain, and one too many useless visits that culminated in little to no change. Enter, my Google search and friends who are chiropractors, doctors, physical therapists, and former victims of sprained ankles and other foot problems. The one common piece of advice I got from my friends, and my dearest friend, Google, was simple: GO TO PHYSICAL THERAPY. I'm glad I listened. My pain was going nowhere fast, and quite frankly, I was starting to look like a mom who wore Saucony's to every social event, with everyone asking why I always looked like I had just worked out. I was THIS close to putting on mom jeans, getting a mom haircut, driving a minivan, and just tossing any chance of looking cute and put together in my 20's into the dumpster. None of my friends seemed to have gone to physical therapists who were still working in Boston, so with no real recommendations, I turned to Yelp and randomly found ProEx. I was assigned to Stephanie Novello, who is one of the best physical therapists I've ever been to (unfortunately, I'm no newbie to PT, having screwed up several joints in the past). She's adept at evaluating your injury, understanding where you are in your spectrum of pain, and where you want to get to -- back to your favorite physical activities, or just back to being pain-free. Having been a collegiate athlete who had gone through the trials of PT herself, she's keenly aware of any patient's complex frustrations with their injury. It's usually a long road to a full recovery, but she's great at providing you with a roadmap to your end goal, and the sound advice and momentum you need to get there. About 6 weeks of a hip/calf/foot stretching and strengthening regimen later, the pain in my foot has become far more manageable (who knew so many parts of the body could be linked to pain manifesting in one place?), with far less frequent flare-ups of pain. I'm on my way to running again, something that was unimaginable 6 weeks earlier, without me wincing or having to stop frequently and limp back home in pain. I have to thank Steph for all her help in getting me far down the road to recovery, and the whole ProEx team (Shaneka, MK, Sarah) for being the cast of upbeat cheerleaders needed for the weeks of seemingly mundane exercises that are needed to strengthen the parts of your body that have weakened due to injury. We had some weekly deep convos about the latest and greatest on Netflix, after all. And big shoutout to my PT twin Jeff B. who not only graduated PT before me, but beat me to Yelp reviewing ProEx:D. read more

First class all the way. I walked into ProEx Back Bay after a grade 2 ankle sprain with a weak ankle and poor balance and, after other less-than-steller therapy experience, I feared the worst: 2 months of physical therapy that would be "only so helpful" and leave my ankle nowhere close to normal. Fast forward a month: I've "graduated" from ProEx and my ankle is like new. Stephanie, Sarah, Shanika, and the ProEx team were everything I wanted in a physical therapist. They were knowledgeable about my injury and anatomy, challenged me in an encouraging way, and generally were a blast to be around. I'll miss my Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons there as much for the training as for the fun times and conversations. They made me feel comfortable and confident from day one, and, most important, they helped me get results. If you need a physical therapist in Boston, look no further. Great place!! They are knowledgeable, detailed and kind. I hurt myself training for the Boston Marathon and they help me me back on my feet and running in time! They are in-network for many insurances companies, but beware if you need a referral, my doctor's office told me they were not "in-network" as it was not in their kickback network. Stephanie and Hannah developed a program for me that not only strengthened the muscles related to my knee injury, but also helped to engage and strengthen muscles in my core and back. I work as a professional ballroom dancer and was able to dance with little to no pain after about 6 weeks of visits. They've done an excellent job in giving me a program that was catered to my needs. I came into ProEx with intense lower back pain and sports related knee pain. I left a few short weeks later feeling strong, flexible, and with the knowledge to keep my pain at bay. I was really disappointed. I have been to PT at multiple places over the years. This was not a good experience. Nice people, new facility, poor execution and experience. I had an assistant go through the motions each time. No expertise excerpt the first evaluation. Even after u made it clear I would do warmup and simple, unassisted exercises by coming early, or on the way in my gym around the corner, they still didn't do any more work that requires assistance. They didn't follow up on emails. My physician gave me a lot is other facilities and I've been very happy and improving once I switched over. read more

I have had chronic upper back/shoulder pain for over ten years and have been to numerous massage therapists, chiropractors, and physical therapists. Last October I found ProX and Matt McManus -- my life has changed and it's friggin AMAZING. After a few weeks of exercises and Matt's soft tissue work, my pain started disappearing. Not only was he enthusiastic about helping me feel better, he was kind, knowledgable and incredibly dedicated. While I had a good deal of knowledge about my injuries, Matt provided invaluable explanations of what exactly was going wrong and created a program that would alleviate my pain, stabilize my muscles, and eventually strengthen my entire back. The program was comprehensible and accurate. The exercises made sense -- he'd never say, "Just go do this..." Matt explained in detail that each exercise affected xyz and the overall treatment was supposed to be slow and steady to ensure proper healing and strengthening. Matt and his associates (love you Liz, Shaneka, and Kelsey!) are prompt, fun, friendly, and truly care about their patients. ProX physical therapy's approach ensures improvement. Even upon "graduation" Matt designed a fitness plan that would help me maintain our work. As with any healing, fitness, or wellness program, diligence, proper exercise instruction, and complete understanding of treatment will eventually yield permanent results. I found Matt and Kelsey to be knowledgeable, personable and professional, and I appreciate their continued willingness to assist me even though I've now "graduated" to physical therapy on my own (with their printed directions). Stephanie Novello, DPT quickly diagnosed the cause of my tendonitis in my ankle (it was tightness in my calf---go figure), and put a plan in place for rehab and assured me I would be running in 1 month. At ProEx physical therapy, the staff gives you the time, attention, and education that you need to start feeling better. My initial impression was that PT was simply a middle step on the road to seeing an orthopedic, and I thought why not just skip this part. But I'm so glad that I did not, because at ProEx I was educated on what my pain was, where it was coming from and how it could be fixed. It was so comforting knowing that the therapists here had the time to spend focusing on my issue and how to resolve it long term, but also the knowledge to discuss next steps if necessary. On top of that, the staff are extremely attentive and helpful and had my best interest in mind. Matt, and all of his staff were so incredibly helpful with my recovery after I injured my foot running and was on crutched this past summer. The first day I got there I was in terrible pain, I didn't want to do anything, and everything hurt. But by the second week in, I was looking forward to my appointments and getting all of the help to get back to normal. The way everyone is so nice to each other and all of the young people who work there are so smart and listen and modified things based on what worked for me. Kelsey was the greatest, and I hope she ends up working there full time after she graduates! I would consistently call ProEx to talk to Matt if I ever had a problem or pain, before calling the doctor because he was so easy to get ahold of and would give good advice and help me know the difference between discomfort and pain. I learned a lot about how to do so many things differently, that didn't even have to do with my injury. I highly recommend Matt and his team to anyone with any problem, as they are really the best. They are the most flexible with timing you'll find in Boston and the location is prime, right next to the t station. I will always send my friends and family to Matt! After an over-zealous attempt at the splits during a yoga class, I heard a 3-pop clicking sound in my right glute/ upper hamstring area. After trying to work through it and self diagnose myself, I seemed to be getting nowhere. I booked an appointment with Matt McManus PT and he was just wonderful. After a couple of questions and quick stretches, he was able to diagnose me with sciatica and proceeded to answer all the questions I had about it- and this was only during our initial consultation. Matt was very empathetic and his attitude gave me hope that I would be able to recover from this. He was a (legitimate) source of much needed motivation, to say the least. I wish I could continue attending this location but unfortunately it is too far from where I live. Throwing my back out was agony. Not only the pain, but the dissapointment that I couldn't continue running to train for all the 5K's that I am signed up for. My doctor suggested physical therapy. I chose ProEx Physical Therepy because it was the closest one to my office that took my insurance. I am so glad I ended up here. I have not had any experience with physical therapy so I can't really compare them to anyone else. But now I can say that I LOVE physical therapy based on my experience at ProEx! Shaneka answered the phone and took all my info and found a convenient time for me to come in. When I came in she thoroughly explained all the paperwork and how the insurance process would work. She took care of all of that for me. I sat down with Matt and explained everything about my injury. He really listened to me and I got the impression right away that he really knows his stuff. He and Kelsey have been helping me go through all the exercises that Matt lined up for me. Kelsey is great at teaching the correct form for each one and helping you make small adjustments as you go. The facility is super clean, bright and modern. There is a great view of Copley Square. There is definitely a welcoming, comfortable, friendly relaxed vibe at this place. They were not only concerned with getting my back healed but also gave me lots of tips to use for avoiding injury and being a better runner. After a few weeks at ProEx I am back to my regular running schedule and think I am in good shape to hit my goal at my 1st 5k of the season despite the set back of my injury.
