truly the best massage I've had. Over two years since my last massage with him and I am still trying to find someone comparable.

I, like many others, found proactive massage on Groupon. Their system to make an appointment is a bit different than most (you can't even look at scheduling until you get approved through the online system), but worked fine. Before coming in for.my massage, I received many emails about protocol and rules (you have to be the one to receive the massage, you must be 15 minutes early, you must fill out a questionnaire before coming in etc), which all is fine. About a week before my appointment I had a bit of a panic moment when I got an email from Groupon saying that my Groupon was expiring and realized that my appointment wasn't until after the expiration date. I had made my appointment well in advance and couldn't recall if this was alright or not, so I emailed Harrison to confirm it was OK and explained the whole situation. In his return email he stated 'read your validation email' and that's it. So I dug up the email from months prior (which I hadn't found initially because it was too old to be stored in my phone) and found that this was indeed OK. I'm not sure why he wouldn't have just replied 'yes.' I was put off by this before even meeting him. Fast forward to massage day. I make sure to get there 15 minutes early and guess what....No one there. Door is locked. I waited and waited. Harrison arrived 3 minutes before my massage was supposed to start. No big deal except for the many emails I received stating the import of getting there 15 minutes early. No real apology while he set up his office and I waited, but he was friendly enough. He took the time to talk with me about my activities and where I had pain and came up with a plan for the massage - points for that! He also looked at my posture and said he felt my shoulders were a little hunched, maybe from desk work, and offered to release them. He suggested doing a deep tissue instead of a swedish, stating that swedish was like 'petting a kitty'.... Feels nice but does nothing....So I agreed. We headed back to the room where lady gaga was playing (odd choice, but OK). So here's where things got a little weird again.... He made mention of my 'undergarment' several times, first telling me he'd prefer it to be off but if I were uncomfortable with that I could leave them on...Which I did. I then proceeded to lay on the table for 2 full songs before he came back in the room. Throughout the massage he was mentioning how difficult it made the massage to have the undergarment on....I can see that, but it made me feel a little uncomfortable. He really did a good job with the massage, he explained what he was doing and was very knowledgeable about muscles etc but he also made comments about my body like 'you have really nice abs' which just seemed a little over the line and inappropriate for the situation. The massage ended at 11:08 (supposed to start at 10, probably started closer to 10:20 ish). He spent time explaining why it's important to get regular massage work, which I understood. As I was about to leave he asked how my shoulders felt and I told him they were much better and moved them around. Then he proceeded to tell me he just realized why I hunch....Because of course I'm so well endowed and as a girl I maybe felt uncomfortable when I was developing......I felt 100% uncomfortable with this.... Why is he commenting on my chest, that is not necessary. So overall the massage was great BUT I personally felt uncomfortable with this massage therapist so I probably wouldn't return. If you're looking for a good deep tissue massage though and don't mind some idiosyncratic behavior, I'd definitely recommend proactive massage. read more

He told me all about his services and extended me an extremely kind offer. I had my massage on 6/19 and am still feeling its benefits today. I've been going to Harrison at ProActive massage for about a year and a half now and recently purchased a 'pack' of messages because I love them so much! (and love saving money!! lol). I appreciate the deep tissue work as I need a strong touch/lots of pressure and I always feel great/invigorated afterward. I do computer-based work and many days a week sit for 10+ hours (so shoulder/neck/upper back pain from admittedly poor posture - but working on it and appreciate Harrison's reminders to do so), but also play soccer 3-4 days/week and need varied and focused care from time to time. He has really listened to me and worked on specific issues when I need it but also simply done a full body when I'm in need of an escape. The only downside is I wish I could afford a massage every week! Harrison runs his business quite thoroughly and though it might seem like a bit of paperwork and time to arrange the first appointment, I liked the completeness of it all. Also, it's great for me that he uses the Mind Body appointment system and I can lookup/schedule/change my appointments easily from the app on my iPhone. This is a wonderful compliment to Harrison's already awesome massage practice. I definitely recommend giving Harrison a try, especially for deep tissue and if you're into a sports/athletic type massage. read more

Harrison is great! I have a chronic condition that requires me to get a massage every 2-3 weeks, so I purchase the multi-packs saving a bit of money along the way. I always look forward to seeing Harrison and always leave his salon physically better off than when I arrive. For example: This last massage I was having issues with shin-splints. Harrison always will focus on a particular area of your body, if you wish, and I must say, absolutely nailed the shin-splint problem that I was having before the visit. Other times, if there is not a specific area of pain for me, he will do a general, all-around great deep-tissue or relaxing, therapeutic massage, and I always feel energized! I hardly ever write Yelp reviews, but my interaction with Harrison Vickers and Proactive Massage was so unpleasant that I'd be remiss not to. I was trying to schedule an appointment for my mom as a surprise using a Groupon I'd recently purchased. I did so after creating a profile in my name, then trying to schedule an appointment for her as a "family member." Even though it was written in the email I received from Proactive after opening my account, I didn't know that scheduling an appointment for someone else wasn't allowed--an honest mistake. How Harrison responded to that mistake was as rude and condescending as I could imagine. I wasn't trying to take advantage or "run the show." I was trying to schedule a relaxing day for my mom, who rarely gets time for herself. But I would never want my mom to have to get a massage from someone that treats their potential customers so poorly--as potential enemies or scammers--however good of a masseuse they might be. I've included the email exchange that I had with Harrison after scheduling that appointment below. But first, I'd like to respond to something that Harrison said in response to Dori's negative review: Yelp is not a place to bash businesses, but to hold business owners accountable to a higher standard. You, Harrison, are working at a very low standard of customer service. I'm sorry I didn't schedule an appointment for my mom correctly, but I don't know why that offended you so deeply or why you needed to speak to me the way that you did. I really hope that you reevaluate your customer service policy and start to treat others with more respect. EMAIL #1: Benjamin, you left a note when you created your appointment online indicating that "Carol" will be taking your place. Not to be harsh, but it is extremely clear in the Validation email that you were sent when you created your own profile, that anyone showing up in your place would immediately be cancelled and that the person who showed up in your place would be asked to get a refund from the vendor from whom they purchased their coupon. These instructions are extremely clear and are written in bold red capital letters. For this reason, this appointment has been cancelled. Please re-read the instructions that you were sent. I would be happy to meet "Carol", however, she, like you, must have her own profile created online. He had very unprofessional communication to the point of verbally badgering me during the massage and made many accusations about what I must be doing to neglect my health. His condescending arrogance was astounding. He demanded answers to many health questions and then actually accused me of not telling the truth about my exercise routine. Most would rather be interrogated by the police. This should never happen to a client on a massage table. He is not a doctor who is equipped to diagnose and prescribe for general health conditions. I should have left the room the minute he insulted me and refused to pay him but I was in such a vulnerable position. Keep in mind a massage client is lying naked on table covered with their draping linens so I just asked him to leave my health issues to me and my doctor. The energy did then improved slightly and I agreed to continue the massage. His skill level was highly overrated by the person referring me to him and he caused unnecessary pain to my arms due to improperly warming up my tense muscles. After I left, there were many tears from the way he treated me for the majority of the session and I remained upset for a long while afterwards. Update: Immediately after this review has been posted, he has erroneously accused me of being a competitor or a groupon discount client. He apparenly thinks only about himself expressing dismay that my review may hurt his business and still has not ever apologized for upsetting me or offered to refund the fees paid. He insists that I meet him face to face which is again creates a very uncomfortable opportunity for him to verbally bully me. I do not intend to hurt anyone's business, rather share truth about what has been hurting me inside. Truth can help people to become aware and improve. Impossible to get an actual appointment. You have to wait several days for anyone to call you back, then appointments are scheduled at their convenience, not yours. Harrison was great. I was dealing with some neck/upper back pain and restrictions from basketball practices, and after one session with Harrison it really loosened up. It was worth it, he took the time to listen to what aches I had, and really provided a holistic approach. He suggested things I could do outside of the massage to help the soreness also. I have been a client of Harrison's for over two years. It could be argued that I am one of the most non-flexible humans walking this earth. Like many people I spend more than 20 hours a week hunched over a laptop (not good), and I am cramped in a coach seat on frequent flights. To top it off, I am a Type 2 diabetic, and have my share of hand and foot neuropathy. Once a month I benefit greatly from Harrison's treatment. The tension in my upper back, chest and neck builds until he forces it out. My hands and feet are rendered warm (non-numb and or prickly) and dexterous. I takes an hour and a half for me. He is very strong and works hard. One thing that you might notice is the need to drink a lot of water afterward, this is an indication of toxins released from tissues that have been released. If you are looking for a 15-30 minute mall/airport/strip shopping center franchise "buff and fluff" spa massage, go somewhere else -- it will leave more appointment openings for me and other customers who truly require Harrison's strength and efficiency to get real, lasting improvement/results. I have been a client of Harrison's since January. I am so grateful I found him. I was looking for a massage therapist with his therapy methods to alleviate my pain. I have arthritis in my lower back and I suffered from a collarbone that "shifted". I tried chiropractic care for the collarbone but it kept shifting out of place. I also suffered from tendinitis in my wrist from typing all day at work. My most nagging issue was my upper back from poor posture sitting at my desk. Since my first massage therapy session with Harrison my quality of life has improved tremendously. On my initial visit, Harrison asked me several questions to understand my pain. He also provided suggestions for how my monitors, chair and keyboard are positioned to improve my posture. He also educated me on how I'm sitting while driving. Went back again after a special that he offered for his VIP clients that I couldn't refuse. I have been so busy with my own business as well as extra volume of customers coming from all the events in Phoenix. Due to repetitive use that is required of my jobs, my shoulders start to roll forward even more significantly than the last time I was under his care. He immediately saw that and had to go to work to alleviate that build up and get the tensions released since I cannot do it on my own. I got some massages earlier but it didn't go as deep as required so it was another very intense session knowing that I probably will make him pull out all he got. By the end of the session, he had me so happy that so much tension have evaporated that I bought another 5 sessions of 90 minutes of treatment with him. Having just finished my second one and a half hour appointment, I am grateful to have found a true and caring professional who knows his craft. As an older man, doing physical labor, Harrison took the time to assess my issues and needs, and then addressed them. I left completely relaxed, with some nagging problems resolved. Harrison was professional, warm and engaging and checked with me frequently to make sure I was doing well during the process. He ultimately made several recommendations to help me eliminate some problem areas -- i.e. stretching my calves, aggravated by standing on a ladder the day prior to this massage. My previous therapist had retired, and also gave a therapeutic massage which I thought I would never find again. Then on a referral went to Harrison. He is amazing and just what I was looking for! I have a stressful job and work out regularly causing lots of tension and things to work out. He always asks before we start if I have any particular issues, and we go right to work on those. Recently I came in with some knee pain and thought it was related to my IT band which had gotten out of whack before. He went to work releasing my IT band, and my knee pain was gone the next day. If I don't have a specific area, we do an all over deep tissue therapeutic massage. I look forward to seeing Harrison every month. LOVED the therapist I had from Pro Aktiv. This company had a booth at Pride and I was fortunate enough to get Harrison Vickers as my therapist. I was in bad need of the knead... My leg was locked up, my shoulder locked up, and Harrison went to work and set my body right! I travel a lot and have recently lost my permanent therapist in the SF Bay Area, if I lived in Phoenix, Harrison would be my go-to therapist full time. This is no phony slap-n-tickle weekend course trained therapist, Harrison is well trained, knows the body and even at an event venue was able to pull off a miracle and do great bodywork. Purchased a groupon ticket at a great price. But then had a bit of a hard time getting scheduled in. He's a "one-man show," and is busy. Now, for my review from my personal experience, he's good at what he does; knows how to pinpoint a location/area of pain and focus thereon. He tells you what you can do to help alleviate pain. Very intense deep tissue massage. He really works the muscles. I'd go back. In fact, I scheduled a follow up appointment while I was there. The only reason I'm giving it an A-OK is because the "deep tissue" massage was very painful to me. But the other part of the massage, the one where he works to get the muscles to relax WAS ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. I slept much better, so he obviously alleviated some of the pain. I think massage is the way to go. Can't quite endorse the painful deep tissue, but definitely the other relax the muscle massage he does. Very strong hands. read more

I highly recommend Harrison Vickers and ProActive Therapeutic Massage.When you first walk in you will notice what a comfortable, beautiful professional atmosphere the office has. You can feel the healing, positive energy. More important, the professional therapeutic massage is the most effective treatment I have found. I have had pain in my shoulder and back for years. Sometimes the pain was so bad I couldn't move my upper body without crying. I have been to general doctors, orthopedic doctors, chiropractors and other massage therapists. The doctors prescribed physical therapy which I tried several times but it never helped. The chiropractors and other therapists gave me some temporary relief for my back but nothing that lasted more than a week. Harrison loosened the area which started to help. Then, in one session, he used trigger point therapy and the pain went away. Now I have no pain and I go monthly just to keep my body in shape.My body feels more relaxed and balanced than it has in years. I cannot describe how grateful I am to have my life back.
