I made an appointment for my Truck to have transmission flushed and serviced. After being delayed a day longer they told me they couldn't service my transmission I'm to go to a dealer. They did however charge me $95 to tell me everything I already knew. No engine codes, motor oil fine fluid levels fine etc. Charge $95 to " safety check " my truck and then tell me they can't do the work I asked them to do. Why not tell me upfront they can't service my transmission and charge for that decision. I think they just made a quick $95 bucks off me. They've done work in the past for me and have been honest but as I'm leaving the door they tell me not to worry about getting my transmission serviced, I have to ask myself, why not tell me that upfront??? So consider the $95 as a version of a diagnostic fee. read more

*update* in hindsight they did reach out to me afterwards and try to resolve things. After a service light came on, I decided to take my car to this place, because I wanted the mechanic to take a closer look. They said that they may know the issue but that they found more issues while searching.The final price being a minimum of $400 dollars and then several charges on top off that. Also because "work" had already been done on car, they charged me before I could even get my car back. All in all, I paid $1800 before I was completely fed up with them. A month later I took my car to a trusted shop in Maryland and the mechanic mentioned that somebody unplugged some fuses and rigged some things, triggering the light and other issues. The mechanic in Maryland fixed it for $16 while I was getting an oil change. read more

As a female taking my vehicle to a garage is a scary thing. I had some serious issues with my jeep, everyone (friends) telling me my transmission was going out in my jeep so of course I went to Protrans. Thankfully it wasn't my transmission, but they called me each step of the way to tell me what they were doing and what was wrong. It ended up being my spark plugs thank god and they also inspected my jeep which led me to find out that the garage I had recently taken my jeep to and paid $300 for brakes and rotors to had ripped me off, but my jeep is running fine and legal! I tried to schedule an appointment and because I didn't have the vin # they put me on hold and the person that picked up laid into me and I said I was a veteran and it was veterans day and its no way to treat a person. He hung up on me and when I called back they were rede and obnoxious! Never going to go there or would never recommend them. Horrible customer service. The manager was horrible and rude. read more

I can't begin to tell you how wonderful the owner and manager, Dennis, of Pro-Trans in State College, PA has been. We were stranded at the rest area on Interstate 80 west in PA when the transmission quit in our truck which was pulling our 37' 5th Wheel with the two of us and our cat and dog on our way from NJ to MI for a wedding. Dennis has helped us get a car rental, a truck to have our 5th Wheel towed to a campground in addition to diagnosing the problem with the transmission. He gave us many options to fix it and we can't thank him enough for all his help. Let me start off by saying this is my first review for anything... ever. I literally created this Yelp account just so I could write a review because I'm so grateful for the work these people have done on my car. I drive a manual Toyota so when it comes to doing maintenance I go to Joel Confer Toyota. When my car started accelerating slowly I explained the problem to Toyota and they said, "it's probably just the cold weather." Seriously? Whatever... A few days later I needed to get the annual PA emissions inspection and I took it to Midas (also pleased with them) and they told me my clutch was slipping and recommended Pro-Trans. Toyota couldn't see me for 2 & 1/2 weeks and I really just couldn't wait that long with how severe my clutch was slipping so I took it to Pro-Trans for a diagnostic check. It was going to take a while so Dennis handled my account and Dale drove me home. The repair took about 3 days and Dennis called me regularly with updates. He spoke to me very respectfully and explained every problem clearly. As a girl who knows practically nothing about cars it's always assumed that someone at a repair shop is going to rip you off, but I know that the fine gentlemen at Pro-Trans aren't doing this. With every repair they said needed to be done I got price quotes from Toyota. Pro-Trans was less expensive than Toyota on a new clutch, new rear brakes, and throttle body cleaning. The only thing Toyota happened to be less expensive on was new spark plugs, and Pro-Trans was happy to meet me on the price that Toyota quoted. When it was time to pick up my car Dennis took me to the back, where Fred showed me the old clutch and rear brakes and explained how worn out they were. That's awesome service. To sum up, I'm completely blown away and pleased with the service I received from Pro-Trans and the condition of my car. My new clutch comes with a warranty and a free 500 mile check up. Pro Trans is officially THE spot for any sort of transmission/clutch issues that you may have. Let me begin by saying that I have never owned a car with automatic transmission, so I really can't speak to those types of repairs, but the work they've done on my manual was excellent. We brought the car here to have the clutch replaced. Typically, I go in to car places with my defensive Italian tough-girl attitude ("Yea? You think my car needs that? Well, my cousin Paulie says...") because I hate getting either a) gouged or b) looked down upon because I have two X chromosomes, but it was sooo unnecessary in ProTrans. These guys are not only very easy to work with, but there was no gouging or down-talking. They are good about only fixing what NEEDS to be fixed (at first glance, they thought that the clutch may not need to be replaced, and were looking in to a $40 repair, which was refreshing). The mechanic took the time to go everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) that had to be done to the car (including giving us the old clutch so I could call the dealer and bitch about it wearing out because it wasn't set properly) and also asked if we had questions or concerns before leaving. They also have a great warranty policy, and require a 500 mile free "check-in/check-up" to make sure everything is running smoothly after a big repair (I'd like to note that we're currently on 1200 miles and things are just peachy!). I must say, I am highly impressed with both the work and the service that I got here. If you need any sort of major work done on your car here in SC, I'd recommend ProTrans without hesitation. read more

Visiting from Florida, had an issue with some chirping noise and grinding gear. Took jeep in and the service was terrific. They took the time to ride with me to make sure we were on the same page. They thoroughly went over the jeep and made recommendations. They fixed everything they felt necessary and advised on the grinding gear. Now my jeep is running great. I recently had a car break down 250 miles from home and found that it needed a new transmission. By this time I was back home and needed to conduct everything by phone Pro-trans transmissions made this very easy. They analyzed the problem for a very reasonable 65$ and told me that it was a premature failure and was covered under the warranty. They contacted the Nissan dealer nearby and negotiated with them to perform the repair at no charge , informing them that it was an internal failure rather than a leak. Next they arranged to have the car towed and have it covered by insurance. Throughout, they were very courteous and prompt, keeping me informed every step of the way. They do not fabricate numbers and charges out of thin air. After the brake job, I took my car there to replace a clutch because I've got a lead foot and sometimes pretend my car is a racer (it's not). I deliver food at night so if my car isn't running then I'm not able to pay my bills. I let Bill and Denis know my situation and they do a great job working around my work schedule. If my issue isn't to serious and they need to order parts they give me my car back to use and call me when the part comes in. If there is a busy weekend for delivering and my car isn't running, they have got it fixed and in my hands by Friday every time! Don't let the name fool you. They do so much more than just transmissions and the price is right. While I usually suspect garages are tacking on hours and parts onto my invoice to pay for that new truck they bought, there have been many times that my bill was hundreds of dollars less than I was expecting in the 3 years that I have been going to them.
