As someone who has a job doing mechanical maintenance on heavy equipment and works on cars as a hobby, do NOT go here. These people are the epitome of dishonest mechanics. They will always "happen to find another more expensive thing your car needs" (but really doesn't) while doing the original job you took it in for. I took my car in for a simple alignment and they tried telling me I needed a control arm. Because my car has low mileage, this is an immediate red flag. I was also under my car the previous week for an oil change and knew for a fact everything was in mint condition. Honest mechanics are hard to find, and you will not find them here. I recently hit a road hazard and got a sidewall puncture on my passenger side rear tire. I changed the tire and brought the tire into Firestone to get repaired. They called me and said it was a sidewall puncture and they couldn't repair it. I said go ahead and replace the tire and I'll bring the car in so they could put a new tire on the driver side rear tire also. I needed new brakes rotors and front calipers on my 1998 Jaguar XJ8 and brought it in to Gemini Auto Repair. After the repair was done, they told me that I had the wrong size tires on the rear and they were about an inch too big. I called Firestone and they replaced the tires. you would think that since they had the original tires, they would know to put the correct size on. I have a Subaru, and after taking it to a local shop for an oil change and tire rotation, they told me I "had" to have new tires immediately. I inquired about the price for everything, and it was going to be $1650. I laughed in their faces. I got on my phone, made an appointment at Firestone, drive over and for the same services with new tires, mounted and balanced and an alignment, it was barely touching $600. He explained the invoice very patiently. After the work was done, I went to my car and thought about can I have a mail-back cash back? I went back to Lonnie. Stopped in for PA State Inspection thinking a franchise would be more reliable than finding an independent mechanic. Turns out they rarely pass your vehicle without you having to purchase additional items in order to pass. Funny how all my lights and signals were perfectly functioning before Firestone. But now, I have several signal failures. Also, just put 4 new tires on less than 2 years ago and remarkably they say I need 2 new tires, but recommend I should get 4 new tires. If I don't agree to their failures of signal lights and tires, they'll fail my inspection and I'll have to go elsewhere. Therefore, I recommend everyone go elsewhere, don't even consider these rip-off artists. They are only concerned with profitability not being honest. After reviewing Firestone's Courtesy Check Form, provided AFTER inspection and tires were paid for, which clearly shows they changed the original Tread Depth from a "3" to a "2" which fell into the failure area for my rear tires. Here is my review of Firestone from today. You DO want to see how this one ENDS! ---------- I've been a customer at the State College Firestone off and on since 1998. I drive a 1994 Chevy Cavalier convertible. It is teal and has a white top and a white interior. I have babied and cared for this car since Day 1. Three years ago, I had the BODY redone. A little over three weeks ago, I picked up the car with a new TOP on it. The last item was inspection. I took the car to Firestone for the inspection. I also needed an oil change, a tire rotation, and a check of a coolant and possible oil leak. All of these things were done. I wasn't surprised when brake measurements warranted some work. I know my car well enough after all of this time to know this would be a possibility. The coolant leak had to be fixed and the oil leak researched. All of that was done. By the time it was all done, I'd had about $2000 in work done under the hood. FOUR DAYS LATER.....I got in my car to go to work and when I stepped on the gas pedal, it felt like the car was hesitating to accelerate. I also heard a loud flapping noise. I thought maybe a belt got thrown off. I took the car back to have it checked and I'll admit I was FURIOUS after spending almost $2000 to get everything fixed up nicely. Lonnie Hart, who has been there for much longer than I've been going there has always been trustworthy and honest. I've never known him to lie, period! The car was taken in and checked. The belts were checked and they were fine. Because of the age of my car, my car will not always communicate with the computerization. It may give error codes and sometimes it simply won't. This also happens at the dealership where I bought it so it's not Firestone. The engine seemed to be misfiring. The spark plugs were changed and that didn't fix the issue. Lonnie called and asked of they could hold the car so that the technician who was more experienced at this type of problem could look at it the next day. Lonnie also reserved and PAID for me to have a RENTAL CAR. I agreed. Cylinders 2 and 5 had some major issues most likely due to a coolant and/or oil leak. The parts needed were ordered and brought in and the cylinders were repaired. That still didn't fix the issue. Keeping in mind that they were working half blind and they were working mostly by visual inspection, patience became a massive virtue and my anxiety was up. I needed to stay calm. After that didn't work, Lonnie called me to give me an update. It got to the point where the technician was taking apart the engine and finding so many issues from coolant leaks, oil leaking and other things. It was determined that the car needed to have a new engine put in it. Lonnie had already located one and ordered it. It took a couple of days to get the engine and then it had to be put into the car. Lonnie explained it as the car needing "a transplant." Since I'm a nurse, he knew which analogy to use to make it all understandable. Today, I picked up the car and Lonnie and I went for a drive. We were listening to the car at a wide array of speeds. I could feel it in the gas pedal that this car had a new engine since the response to stepping on the gas pedal felt like a new or newer car. Any heavier idling that the car may have had before appears to be gone. I took the car out on the nearby bypass and opened her up. Smooth! For now, I'll have about a week of close listening and watching as my car adjusts to its "transplant." And here's the part you do NOT know yet about this review: the GRAND TOTAL of the work done to the car was $2,713.49. And......Firestone did ALL of the work at NO CHARGE! read more

Brought my car in for maintenance, got it back the next day. Upon driving, there was a strange rattling noise. I brought it back in, and they said it was a shock problem, they'd fix it with no cost, but I would be "good to drive it for the day". Less than a mile later, I was getting stopped on the street because my back wheel was "about to fall off". I pulled over, and, upon inspection, realized there was a single bolt in my wheel. I don't know much about cars, but I know that this is not what it should look like. They fixed it, but they offered no discount on the $1400 services they provided. I never even got a simple apology. We bought tires at Firestone with the warranty. I am always skeptical of any tire warranty. The tires wore out prematurely. Without hesitation Manager Ryan honored the warranty and prorated new tires appropriately. We also bought new clippers, rotors and brake paces at Firestone as well. We had an issue with these brakes. My son is a grad student at PSU. He took his car here for state inspection. They told him he needed rear brakes including drums and several other things to pass inspection for a total of $1200. He called me in a panic, because he didn't have anywhere near enough to cover the repairs. The whole thing sounded fishy, so I told him to bring his car home to get it inspected, a two hour drive. We took the car to a known, HONEST mechanic. The car passed with NO repairs necessary. The brakes still had 50% lining. The whole thing, including an oil change was less than $100. Came over here for an oil change. I scheduled an appointment on the Firestone website, so it was very seamless. This spot is right down S Atherton, next to McDonalds. The staff here was pretty nice and attentive. As far as the pricing goes, it cost me $80 to get my oil changed with full synthetic oil (including a $5 coupon). This, was just a TAD on the expensive side, but they had another $10 MIR which made it a little more bearable. The oil change itself took a little longer than expected. I usually can get in and out within 45 minutes, but it took Firestone about an hour to change my oil. They did their job perfectly fine, but the time and price was just a little out of my tolerance zone. I'll go back if I can't find a cheaper and faster spot. read more

After my first of two visits, I had planned on giving Firestone 5 stars to help them redeem their Yelp status. However, after the second visit they are lucky to be getting 2 stars. Lonnie was great. He helped me get new tires within a hour of my call on a Saturday morning and was very nice. He was the only nice one. But after they installed my new snow tires, they told me they broke my hub cab and that if I got a new one, they would reimburse me. They should have simply said they would be ordering for me, if they really wanted to offer good customer service. The following Monday, I went to the local dealership to get a quote for the part needed. I then took the quote to Firestone to get my reimbursement. After saying how much I loved my new snow tires to a different guy (Lonnie wasn't in) I barely got a smile or a thanks. I then proceeded to be given a very hard time about getting my money refunded. After arguing about getting cash back vs. them wanting to credit my card (which makes NO sense since this wasn't a refund on something I bought through them on a credit card), some jerk chimed in. I think his name was Matt. He grumbled, "just give her the cash back" and then proceeded to mutter under his breath. I said thank you very much and his rude response was "yeah, it will only screw up the drawer for us later". I could not believe how rude this guy was. It was all I could do to not really say something. Keep in mind that I spent over $700 on snow tires this day and spent over $200 last year on a different car AND have all season tires that will need to be replaced by summer. Minor emergency for me was no problem for Firestone. I picked up a nail in my tire and the tire wouldn't hold air. This was a problem because I was in State College visiting my parents and needed to return home. Fortunately Firestone was open on Sunday. I walked in with no appointment and Lonnie was able to have the team take a look at my tire right away. They weren't able to repair the tire (I thought there was that possibility based on the location of the puncture) but they gave me a very fair price on 4 new tires including mounting as alignment. I have been a customer of this location in State College for more than twenty years. I started taking a company vehicle in for service in the 90's since it was approved for fleet maintenance. I also decided to bring my own car in for regular maintenance visits here since they were always friendly and quick on the maintenance requests even though I did not schedule appointments. My car lasted twenty years with taking it in for regular maintenance into this Firestone. I trust the service at this facility and have always been dealt with fairly. My new car is now being serviced at this facility and I can only hope that it will last as long as my last vehicle with the good care that this place provided my last car. read more

I just wanted to say, that I am NOT someone who looks for an issue where there is not one, nor have I ever had an experience this bad at ANY auto-care facility. I walked in fully expecting to have my flat tire repaired with little issue, as three months ago my car was inspected and I was told that my tires should be good for another year or so. In the time between my inspection and the flat tire, someone backed into the front of my car, and the back right tire started making a slight noise (I should note, this car is 3 years old with 30,000 miles on it). Upon entering, I instantly got a bad feeling. Initially, they prompted me to sign something with dollar values on it without any explanation. When I asked what I was signing, I was told "It's just so we have permission to move your car in the parking lot" which is actually inaccurate. It was really saying "this is how much we expect you to pay based on the reported issues" which would have been fine, if I had been given a moment to look at it rather than blindly rushed into signing it (foolishly on my part), and told the wrong thing. But so far, I wasn't terribly alarmed. I then proceeded to sit in the waiting room, where I was the only customer. At this point, I should probably note that I am a 24 year old woman who was sitting alone. This is relevant because as I was sitting there, several employees made a point of walking in and out of the shop door and nudging each other/staring at me/calling each other's attention to me as I waited. This I dismissed, assuming that my discomfort was simply in my own head and that they were doing nothing wrong. An employee from the repair center then came out of the back and sat next to me while texting on his phone. Perhaps he was simply on his break and always chooses to sit in the same chair. I can't say for sure. But it seemed odd that he would come to the tiny waiting room (where there were numerous open chairs, as well as chairs in the back room) and sit by me. I continued to dismiss my discomfort. At this point, the two front desk workers began loudly having a conversation about sexual harassment and how women are TOO SENSITIVE. What a coincidence, since I had just been thinking that the problem was ME. They discussed LOUDLY, while I was the only person in earshot, that one of them had almost been fired from his last job for sexual harassment. They talked about a woman who he described as "a 300 pound softball player type" and how men RARELY do anything wrong in these cases, women are just looking for trouble. This went on for several minutes and ended only when my car's report came back up front. They informed me at this point that my tire was beyond repair as it is too worn out, and they think I need all new tires. As well as a new wheel hub on the back. Oh AND they only have one type of excessively expensive tires available in my size (convenient). The grand total that they wanted to charge was $1,300. Again, less than three months ago, my car was "pristine" and they found ZERO damage from the slight bump on the front. At this point, I was so disgusted, that I was determined not to pay them a dime. After declining to buy the $500 worth of tires he wanted to sell me, he then asked if I wanted to have something done that "might stop the leak." Clearly, this option was not going to be offered to me unless they couldn't convince me to buy the tires. It's like if you found a bump on your body and the doctor said "instead of testing it, we will just start chemo, because it could be cancer." Long story short: they did absolutely nothing for me and still charged me the same amount from that first paper they had me sign. To be honest with you, everything they said may be true (doubtful, but possible), but I have so little respect for them, that I can't trust a word of it. I will gladly go an hour and a half to my hometown, and pay the respectful, and reputable tire shop there, as much as they want. (Update: After speaking to another tire location, they said that even if I need new tires, the average cost per tire for a vehicle of my size is $30-55. The only tires I was offered at Firestone were $120 a piece.) I am genuinely fearful of posting this review, because they will see my first name and they have my home address on record. I scheduled a appointment online for 2 tires. When I got my car there, I asked if they could do emissions on it also. I have never had any issues with my vehicle. They told me that I needed a 3rd tire and a battery. There was no way the battery was dead. Instead of just getting 2 tires, they did an alignment and put road hazard on my 2 tires that was not authorized. When I went to pick it up, battery was dead and I've started it up several times since getting car back, no issues. I feel the same as others when they find everything wrong that isn't wrong. What a DISASTER of a Firestone. These people should not be using the Firestone name, I called corporate and told them that. There are a few young mechanics that seem okay, the rest are a bunch of skeevy greasy old men. I bought new tires, oil change and filter, and alignment. 2 hours of 'work' on my car...and 3 hours later on the road for business my new tire is flat already. They had no one to come fix it unless I paid for a tow. I had to change the spare and get back to the supposed "firestone". They looked over the tire and found NO REASON for it to be flat. Huh!!...So, they probably did not inflate it fully and shockingly it went flat. Upon my return at 4pm to get their yicky tire removed from my rim and be on my way, the old skeevy mechanics had all their own broken down, dirty, wrecks of cars around the front door in a disarray jacked up fixing their own stuff. I am a student in the area and my car began making a loud noise. While looking at my vehicle a mechanic said he could not find anything wrong with my car. I told him to let the engine run...seconds later, the noise was there. I asked if it was linked to my check engine light and the mechanic said he did not check. The manager assured me that his employee used to work at a dealership and saw this problem all of the time. I ended up being charged $620 for a "misdiagnosis" of a problem that reappeared an hour after I left the facility due to the lack of effort to investigate the issue. Just moved back to PA and needed inspection. Just had inspection done a month ago in another state and had no problems. I take it to Firestone and after 2 hours and $380 later, I end up driving my car right back to them 15 minutes later...brakes not working. 6 hours later, they fixed brakes, but window motor is now broke. It made me very anxious, but this location fit me into their busy schedule and within a couple hours called and told me it was a minor problem with the wheel torque. Only cost me $10. As someone before me said, the only good part of my experience here was Lonnie and even he overcharged me. I was visiting from Ohio and on Saturday my car wouldn't turn on (I had to leave to go back to work in Ohio that Monday). I grew up around cars and motorcycles and knew that this was more than just a dead battery. I got a tow to Firestone and the next morning I called to make sure it was getting fixed that day as I had to leave the next day. They called me back a few hours later telling me that I needed a new battery and it would be almost $200. Fine, just as long as my car got fixed and I could get back to work. When I got there to pick it up I said "I just wanted to make sure that the alternator was checked," because everyone I talked to (my father who has worked at bmw and Harley Davidson, and two friends who work at auto zone). The man behind the counter treated me like a stupid little girl who didn't know what she was talking about and said "uh, yeah we did a full diagnostic check," in a very rude way. I brushed it off and drove home. The next day (Monday) I got all of my things together to make my 5.5 hour drive home and my car was completely dead again. Won't even make the usual noise that dead batteries make. I call Firestone to tell them that the battery they had put in yesterday wasn't working and the man on the phone said, "ok...what do you want us to do about it?" As if it was not their problem. I said I wanted to know what was wrong with my car and was handed over to someone who "actually knows this stuff," (I'm sorry, you work at a car garage, shouldn't YOU know this stuff?) that was when I talked to Lonnie. He asked me to jump it and drive it down and if that didn't work to call back and he would send someone to me. When the jump wouldn't work, I called back and was given a number for a towing company, which I didn't need because I was told that someone would come help me, so I opted to use roadside assistance again so I wouldn't need to pay even more money. When I got to Firestone they said they would look at it as soon as possible and seemed surprised when I told them I was going to stay in the store and wait for them to figure out what was wrong. An hour and a half later they determined that I needed a new alternator. Wait, though, didn't I ask them if they had checked my alternator yesterday, you ask? Why yes. Yes I did. So I am told that it will be 1-2 hours. Lonnie tells me that it will be $528, and that he gave me the check for free (wow! Free?! Thanks so much for giving me a free check that you charged me for yesterday and apparently didn't even complete!) I get my dad on the phone with him and he offers to "drop the price" and takes $28 off. hours later, Lonnie tells me that they're just waiting for the new alternator to get there. Half an hour later, Lonnie approaches me and explains that the part he received was a used alternator, not a new one, which I needed. He offers to drive me home and fix it tomorrow. I reply that this is unacceptable since I'm driving back to Ohio tonight. He tells me that that's probably not possible, and then when I begin to tear up quickly says he will go check if he can get a new one (which are available at almost all auto part stores). When I go outside to call my dad and let him know what's going on, Lonnie comes rushing out to tell me they have a part on its way. At 6 o'clock one of the desk guys called my name and told me I was ready to go. There was no sign of anyone who had worked on my car, no apologies, nothing. I asked if everything was okay and the guy said, "well the battery is failing--" to which I answered "excuse me? YOU guys replaced my battery YESTERDAY." And he looked flustered and shuffled some papers before going to speak to someone else. Meanwhile, the man next to me was asking the other clerk why they hadn't checked HIS battery, and why they were just now telling him that his battery was failing. The clerk replied, "I know this is frustrating," and continued to explain that they SHOULD have checked the battery first.....should have, could have, but both me and the other customer instead got 'did not'. The man came back and said that my battery was fine. I kept asking if he was positive, as I had to drive 5.5 hours directly upon leaving. I asked if they had checked the battery cable, the fuse box, and the tires like we had asked them to. He replied "uh yeah, they should have," again with the should have's. I left feeling very uneasy about my drive home, and when I stopped for gas later and turned my car back and back on, it began making the same buzzing noise that had been part of the problem in the first place. Later I realized that my AC wasn't blowing, and I had to turn both the AC and stereo off to keep my dash from becoming very hot. DO NOT GO HERE! They will rip you off. They are a bunch of crooks. I took my truck here to get inspected and they told me I needed new ball joints and many other things. They said I needed to spend $2000 dollars worth of repairs. My ball joints were almost brand new. I bought them only 8 months ago. Nice to know that when you pay for tires and are "supposed" to get a "free" rotation, what that really means is NO rotation. I asked for a rotation, balance and windshield wipers. What I paid for was a pair of $83 windshield wipers. Nice to also know that it's just another joint that rips off females - I guess, well, because they can!! I marked my tire to see if they REALLY took the tires off to balance and rotate. The same mark was on the same tire in the same location when it came out. Not only is this a safety concern with the proper wear and tear of your tires, but they are blatantly putting you in jeopardy by not doing what you asked for and what they should be doing. I've taken my car to this Firestone for alignment and tire balancing, mostly because it's convenient. I can drop it off in the morning, walk or take the bus to work and pick it up at the end of the day. On both occasions I've had problems. The first was a 4-wheel alignment. I dropped the car off in the morning. When I came to pick it up they told me they couldn't do the alignment on the rear wheels because they didn't have the tool for my Saab. When I dropped the car off I told them the year/make/model. They should have known right then they didn't have the tools to do the rear. So I was stuck with either taking it to another shop to get a 4-wheel alignment (and paying a second time) or living with the 2-wheel version. I had no problem living with the 2-wheel version but I asked to be charged for a 2-wheel alignment but they insisted they only do 4-wheel alignments. I said "You just now did only a 2-wheel alignment, so please charge me for that, not the 4-wheel". Nope. Charged me for the full 4-wheel even though, by their own admission, that's not what the did. The second problem was similar. I took my car in to get the front wheels balanced. They were offering a $15 vehicle inspection and tire rotation. I had some noise coming from the front driver's side wheel well when going over small bumps so I asked them to skip rotating the tires (I'd just done that myself) but while it was on the lift to inspect the front suspension and tell me what the problem was. When I went to pick up the car they said 'based on the milage' you should replace the front suspension for $900. I asked what exactly the problem was and if they had looked at the suspension. "Well, sir based on the milage, we recommend you replace the front struts". So instead of taking 2 minutes while the car was on the lift to inspect the strut as I asked and as they said they would do ("We'll take a look at it"), they charged me $15 to look at my odometer. I complained about this and the response was: "Our guy's time is worth something?" Fair enough, but I've got two problems with that: 1) they didn't do what they said they would do and what I was paying them for and 2) how long does it take to check the odometer when you are already working on the car? 30 seconds? I should have know after my first experience not to return, but they are convenient and I thought sometimes it just depends on the kind of day the person you are dealing with is having. But 0 for 2? I'm done with these guys. I won't be going back and I'd recommend to anyone else that they look elsewhere. read more

do NOT take your car to this garage. they find things"wrong" that aren't actually bad. they require repairs for state inspection that don't actually fail. they recommend "preventative maintenance" that is "recommended by the manufacturer" that isn't at all. they are after after your money and as much as they can get. if you can't afford the repairs they push their corporate credit card on you that has an outrageous interest rate. avoid at all costs! read more
