Horrible experience! I brought my car in because I needed a new tire before heading out. They told me they had the tire I needed and that it would take about 30 minutes since the technician was finishing an oil change. I even asked upfront if it would take long because another shop had the same tire and could do it immediately. They reassured me it wouldn't be a problem. I walked around for 45 minutes, came back, and my car was still sitting in the exact same spot. When I asked about it, the guy went to the back to "check" and came out saying they were working on it. I told him my car was still parked right out front -- then he goes, "Oh, my bad, he's working on another white Honda." Someone then quickly came out, moved my car to the back, probably because I was standing right there watching. I got a text at 2:29 saying I could track the service, and they didn't finish until 4 PM. If they had just told me from the start that it would take 1.5 hours, I wouldn't have complained -- I would've gone to the other shop instead. read more

if I could give this store zero stars I would. I have been extremely patient trying to get my car in to get inspected over the past THREE months. I have a ridiculously busy schedule and made three separate appointments trying to get my car inspected which is now three months out. First appointment made they called me to tell me no one was working the day I was scheduled. Okay fine. Second time I have a prescheduled appointment they tell me when I get there that they have no mechanic working that day. Third time I take my car in, leave it there for a prescheduled inspection, call three hours later to check on how its going, and they tell me then that they couldnt get to it that day. Insanity. Figure your business out. Do not go here for absolutely anything particularly not an inspection. read more

Claimed to replace a shifter cable and they did not. Only replaced the shift linkage. Charged me for a a shift selector cable and all they replace was the shift linkage. I got ripped off by paying over $590 for under a $100 repair. read more

HIt either a decent sized bolder, or a big hunk of metal on the Turnpike. near Harrisburg last Thurday. Called around, and got a quick meeting with Pepboys on Sunday morning @ 9am. "Bring it in, we'll check it out" Had a persistent squeeking noise coming from the right rear (passenger side) of the car. 10 minutes later, in the shop on the lift. (2nd shop that looked at it). 35-40 minutes later CustomerService Rep came out, said they didn't find anything. but showed me a big gash in the rim inside of the the wheel, and a few dings on the frame/cross member and decent dig into muffler. Probably spent an hour or so checking it out and no one could find anything that could have caused the squeeking. Older mechanic with a long Red/White/Blue died beard came over as we were looking it over, "oh, here ya go" he found it the issue in less than 1 minute. Don't ya just love patriots? :) Apparenlty the "bolder or hunk of metal" I hit doing 75MPH clipped off the frame/cross member, hit the bolt housing that controlled the tow of the right rear tire. First they got the "big boy" prybar out, (didn't work), then got the air hammer out, and pryed the metal at the end of the crossmember away from the hinge arm that adjusts the tow of the wheel/tire. -0- charge :) Left with a big smile on my face, and decided to drop by the ATM, pulled out a quick $20 drove back to shop, and gave it to the Patriot for a tip. Worst customer service I have ever experienced in a mechanic shop in State collage, I walked in they didn't even acknowledge my presence the cashier kept joking to one of the 'mechanics' that went on for 10 minutes then finally they tell me that they didn't have anytime for me without even asking why I was there or mentioning rescheduling. We were traveling from out of town and got a nail in our tire. The Pep Boys team was able to get us in quickly for a patch to allow us to make it back home safely and timely. Prior to going to Pep Boys we had called another service provider and was told we couldn't get the repair done for 3 days. Definite no go when we still needed to travel 700 miles and be back to work in a day. The team was very professional and easy to work with. Would certainly recommend them for those unfortunate times when in need of a flat repair. read more

I definitely will not be doing business with them again. I just moved to the area from CA and needed to have my state inspection to register my vehicle in PA and I needed an oil change. During this process, I was informed that one of my indicator lights was out and needed to be replaced to pass inspection and meet state law requirements. However, the service manager said this would bring my bill to around $250 because they would have to remove the bumper of my car to get to the bulb, costing nearly an hour in labor. They said that in my car, a 2013 Ford Focus, that is the only way to do it. As I am not a mechanic and not knowledgeable on this topic, I agreed. However, after speaking to mechanic friends and family who claimed that I was scammed, I looked up how this was done in my car. I found a 3 minute YouTube video of a mechanic changing the bulb in a 2013 Ford Focus. Nowhere in the video do the mechanics remove the bumper, and it certainly did not take them nearly an hour to do it. With this new information, I called the shop and spoke to the service manager. He tried reassuring me that it is difficult to change these bulbs by putting the mechanic who worked on my vehicle on the phone. The mechanic was very offended that I questioned the work, stating that he would love to see somebody do it faster, doubling down that it took nearly an hour and required the bumper to be removed. Well, here is a YouTube video of somebody doing it faster, without removing the bumper: https://youtu.be/CzauivIsRGk Anyway, the the service manager offered to refund me $50 of the labor cost of removing the bumper (which was almost $113). I relentlessly agreed even though that is still unreasonable given that I had paid a labor fee for the bulb replacement ($9.99). When I showed up at the shop, the service manager ended up refunding me the full labor cost of removing the bumper (around $113), but reiterating that changing the bulb is more difficult than I think. While I am happy that I received a refund for something that I feel was not necessary, this was all unnecessary. I don't feel like this is an honest shop and I will not be doing business at this Pep Boys again. read more

I'm a city girl with zero car-repair expertise--which is why I needed to visit a Pep Boys just to have my low beam light replaced--but that doesn't mean I can't tell when I'm being taken advantage of. In the past, the Pep Boys near my home in the Philly area has made this replacement for around $15--$5 for parts and $10 for labor. I should have known something was up when this Pep Boys charged me double ($20 labor for changing a bulb!), but since I can't do it myself, I didn't protest. Last week, and two months after my initial visit, the same bulb went out. I immediately raised my eyebrows at my dashboard (well, after banging it a few times in anger), but decided to take my car to a different place in town--Midas, up N. Atherton, where I'll be taking my car from now on--to have it checked out. Turns out that this Pep Boys failed to reconnect the wires properly to my light. So not only did I get ripped off, they didn't even take the time to fix my car! No thank you, Pep Boys. read more

You know that feeling that you're probably paying too much for car repair that may not be done right? That's how I felt walking out of this place. I had gotten my fan belts tightened because they were starting to squeal when I hit the accelerator. I paid about $30 to get them tightened and three weeks later they were squealing again. I didn't bother checking under the hood after the repair but I did after they started making noise again and lo and behold, the bolt that holds the belt tension-thing taut was missing! When I replaced my air filter several months before the repair, it was still there as it has been for the past 7 years. Now I dont know if they just forgot to put it back on, or if it wasn't put on tight enough that it unscrewed itself (unlikely) but their lack of attention to that kind of thing is not what I paid for. read more

I can hardly believe the reviews for Pep Boys are for the SAME Pep Boys where I got my car fixed yesterday. We were stranded in the middle of nowhere and had no option of where to go - so we practically pushed our car to Pep Boys. It was a Sunday and they were not only open, but Kyle came out and read our codes in less than five minutes. Since we arrived at 4 p.m., we had to wait overnight. In the morning, our car was assessed and FIXED in 2 hours. They charged us only the diagnostic fee (which would have been applied to repairs if we'd needed them) and charged us nothing to reconnect what was essentially just a loose connection. They could have gouged us for the time it took, or charged us for something that didn't exist, but they were absolute professionals. Pep Boys got the job done fast AND cheap. Kyle Clymire (hope I spelled that right), the service manager, was a gem. He was kind, prompt, professional, helpful and thorough. In spite of what was obviously a busy day, he never wavered from his positive demeanor. He took at least 3 phone calls from me and my family and he was consistently wonderful. If I hadn't double-checked the address, I wouldn't have believed these Yelp reviews. Maybe Kyle is new management, since some of these reviews are years old. Either way, we couldn't have been more pleased. And if (god forbid) we ever find ourselves stranded in State College again, we will happily go back to Pep Boys. read more

I drove 35 miles to save a buck. I walked in the door at 9:30 for a 10:00 appointment to have 4 tires put on my truck. I walked out the door at 12:30. That's 3 hours to have 4 tire put on. The guy at the counter said they were 2 hours behind schedule. How can you be 2 hours behind schedule at 9:30 in the morning ? The longer I waited the more angry I became. They knew I was pissed and started making lame excuses. They talked at me like I was from outer space, which only made it worse. I've been buying tires for 41 years. I worked in my dad's garage where I was 14 years old. I could change 4 tires by hand in an hour by myself. I don't believe their bullshit for a second. Stay away. Save yourself the aggravation. The money you save isn't worth the time you lose! read more

I wasn't going to review this shop but it finally got the better of me. I feel I have the "right". Three years ago, I had a $600 brake job done on my 2005 Dodge Ram. It was "time" and I got tired of the hard braking. I have always had good luck at Pep Boys in the past, with the exception of someone putting on a wrong brake line that got severed one day while braking. In less than a year, the rotors were warped and the truck shimmied again braking down through 40mph and then again at 20mph. I took the truck back in, wasted another day waiting on them to fix it and down the road I went. In less than another year the shimmy was back. I took it back again...the mechanic took it for for a drive and admittedly, never took the truck over 40mph. Upon his return, he said it was just a little shimmy and looked at me like I was whining about some very small thing. I'm sorry...but should there by ANY shimmy in braking? So they "fixed" it again and when I drove out, the shimmy wasn't any less than when I took it in. I thought about wasting another day of mine for them to explore their incompetence but just vowed to never go to Pep Boys again...and I won't. I'll eat the $600 and take it somewhere else. I came in knowing the repairs I needed done. While setting my appointment over the phone the day before, I was treated very professionally and given a list of tune-up options that I could get done to my car, and ones I didn't really need right away. Everything was done right and well, but it was a little weird when the mechanic kept coming up to me in the lobby and asking me if I knew how to disassemble the part he was working on, and when he insisted on showing my my cabin air filter after he removed it.....but whatever, maybe he was bored. He ended up doing the work correctly either way. The guys behind the counter were very patient and I even got a discount when I used my pepboys card. Overall, I'm pleased, despite what other reviewers have said a year ago. read more

I had to keep calling to see if they came in and the employees kept telling me that they would be in the next day. They finally came in today and the manager Lawrence was so nice and very helpful. He gave me a discount because of the long wait for the tires. I didn't like waiting but the service from the manager made me forget how long it took. 3 stars only, because of a couple of decent people, who, I can't believe are even working there. You may get lucky, but likely, you will not. Corporate trains to up-sell and make repairs the customer did not request. Pep Boys policy toward employees is nasty to be nice about it. And reiterating, policy about replace/up-sell will cost you. Cost per hour for diagnostics alone is $120+. And the actual mechanic gets such a tiny fraction, it's disgusting. I am divesting of Pep Boys, it's just not a conscionable way to make money. read more

I am writing this review, right here at pep boys, waiting for my 2-day, 4 hour wasted(and still going) SIMPLE STATE INSPECTION to be donefor my car. It is my first yelp review. I feel pissed and disgust at this pep boys, so here it is. Yesterday, I had an appointment with them at 4pm through the Pepboys app and I dropped the car on time. After a 2 hour waiting for it, 6pm, I got kind of out of patience and asked the people at the counter about it. Soon they came out and told me my car wouldn't pass because the pink registration paper have a different vin number, even tho the car did passed the inspection tests. I then realized it was the tri county tag services got it mistaken during transferring the title, and I understand that having the information of the viechle should be matching and it might lead to risks of jobs of the mechanic who worked on my car. As a result, I ran to tri county and to see if they can get the thing right. Anyway, I ran back and forth 2 times for it because pep boys won't accept the correction tri county provided and finally I needed a new pink paper and got it to the pep boys. However, the mechanic that inspected my car got off work and they say I have to come back next day.... I then came back today for it to be finished. I thought it would be quick that it's only gonna be putting on sticker. I was wrong. Instead, they told me the mechanic was being "held off" and the car will be re-inspected by another one and here I am waiting... for another 1+ hour already. I am disgusted by this place for its sloppy service and lack of customer attention. Definitely not coming back ever again. And whoever reading my review, THANK YOU and PLEASE DONT COME TO THIS PEP BOYS FOR ANYTHING AT ALL. read more

I will never go back to this place. Poor management and incompetent! Took car for inspection at 50k miles. Said it needed brakes, wheel bearing replaced. They had no sticker for inspection. I returned car the following week just to have sticker applied. Waited 40 minutes for technician to do this 5 min. job. They are rude and extremely unprofessional. Today I purchased HID head light for $100. And, they tried to charge $180 to install it in. The way they talk was it is the way how it is... So, I went to Valvoline Instant Oil Change on N. Atherton St. and they charged me only $15. Personally, Pepboys is the worst one in the state college who charges the most! read more

Have been giving Pep Boys second chances way too long. My husband and I have had a total of 4 oil changes and 1 inspections done here in the past 9 months. Their oil changes are reasonably priced, but take twice as long as they say they will. The service man told me 30-45 minutes for the oil change, and all 4 of them took at least an hour (longest one was 1 hour and 40 minutes). In July I went in to get my husband's car inspected on my day off, and waited 2.5 hours for a basic inspection, which was said to take 1-1.5 hours with their current workload. I went in again for my inspection and waited an hour before they even took it in the shop... then was told it would be another 1-1.5 hours. Needless to say I took my key back and walked out. read more

I had a terrible day at work, got out late, and when I came out to leave, I had a flat tire. It was freezing cold and I didn't really want to change it. Luckily I work in the same plaza as Pep Boys, so I decided to see if they could help. It was 7:00 on Friday night by the way. So I slowly drove over thinking surely they'll be closed, or won't have technicians working that late. They were so nice! One of the guys came out to look at it and they brought it right into the garage to see if they could fix it. They ended up fixing it for free and I was done and driving away at 8:00! I've always had a great experience with Pepboys. Seeing that I am a college-aged female with little knowledge about cars, they could have easily taken advantage of me, but instead were always honest. As other reviewers have mentioned, the wait time can be a bit longer than initially estimated, but I can only assume they're being thorough. The guys are friendly and are always willing to explain whatever I don't understand without me feeling like a pest. I've gone there for oil changes, car failing to start (learned that was because I was on a hill and low on gas lol), and new tires. The prices were reasonable and affordable for me; however, I never really had any major work done. I'd say give them a try. read more

Complete ripoff. Will never return. Called and ordered winter tires. Discussed of the phone about not having to dispose of old tires since we would be putting them on in the summer. Wife showed up had four new tires installed. Next morning I went to get the summer tires from the van to find they were not there. Called the store that evening. Was assured it was a mistake and they would have them there for us to come pick up. Stopped over on a Saturday morning to get them and spoke with Scott who seemed to be the manager. Tried to tell me the wife told him to dispose of them since there was an alignment issue. Amazing being they had less than 5000 miles and she never told him no such thing. Tried to make it sound like it was her fault. Said he did not have time to get them but would call me Monday when he had time to retrieve them. Never called! Imagine that. I will think of you when I now have to buy 4 more new tires this summer. Of course it will be somewhere honest. Hope you found a good use for my new tires you kept! Avoid pep boys. Avoid at all costs. Got our Civic's brakes replaced only to have them fail on the open road the following week, then went back in and they said they'd "fixed" the problem. One year later, we took the Civic to Valvoline and it turns out Pep Boys had changed the pads but not the rotors, which causes immediate rotor degradation; now we need new pads and rotors once again for $300 more. I used to like their tire deals. They used to be a decent outfit, BUT the last couple of years,the quality of their work is poor .... [simple things such as mounting tires with good bead sealant / lubricant so that the tires can be stored for 6 months and WON'T go flat] . The bucks I saved initially on tires has been more than eaten up on flats and various re-work. They have become expert at excuses for not honoring their warranties ...[ for example: you are not in the system, we only keep records for 2 years; etc].
