"Hey Jim...I'm having problems with my home computer / laptop" It's almost like waiting for the announcement of "it's time to clean the communal refrigerator out people!!" It's usually at a particular stressful time unbeknown to the requesting party. On any given day, here is the IT guy's thoughts. 1. Did the backups happen? 2. Any viruses today? 3. Who will say "whoopsie" to me today? 4. Why is the internet so slow, and it is your responsibility to make it go faster!!! 5. What Karaoke songs can i really NAIL tonight, if I can get out of here before 7pm. or.....something like that... I eventually look slowly at the carpet, and have a slow eye roll upward, meeting their eyes, with a smile. Metaphorically, put my arm around them, and say..."walk with me..". "Let me tell you about my friend Jerry. He's right around the corner." Jerry, and his team, can either fix your computer, or build you a GREAT generic computer, for between $300 to $500. (see him for details) There's nothing I don't think these guys can't do. His hourly labor rates are VERY reasonable! I'd take him over Geek Squad or anyone else, hands down. And that allows me to think about more "important things". At the end of that walk, I metaphorically, slip that card inside the requester's pocket. Tap the pocket...and whisper...."call this guy.." ;)

Then going to a stack of apple 'authorized' dealers only to be told a BS story that it would cost 800-850 at all of them to fix my screen (LCD) because they HAVE to replace the lid, and that it would be more economical to buy a new machine (oh thats what you want.. isnt it ahole - its only 8 months old so no. i will not).. I decided to screw the warranty and do myself. I ordered the part for $180 including shipping from iFixit, but then lost confidence in fixing myself. Best try that computer store in my street? He was knowledgeable and friendly. He identified the problem as a burned out SSD. He showed me how he determined the cause, and explained why it happens and how to prevent it in the future. I'm a student with 1 week left before my semester project is due, and all my work is on a damaged…read morethumb drive. I took the damaged thumb-drive into PC Mac Express for diagnosis to see if it could be fixed. They called back and said it would cost about $400 and there was only a 50/50 chance that it could be recovered. When I picked it up, there was a red wire attached to the board that had not previously been there. I found someone in Canada to look at it and said they would do it for $200 and I'd only have to pay if they recovered the data. The company in Canada attempted to recover the data but said it looks like the other company had done something to the chip and were likely holding the data 'hostage' so that no one else could get the data, so that my only choice was to go back to PC Mac Express. The scope of this technology is out of my range so I don't know what to believe but what I saw with my own two eyes was the extra red wire that had not been there when I dropped it off. When I called PC Mac to question this and what was happening, they claimed nothing had been done and they had not attached any wires. At the end of the day, I didn't get my data back and PC Mac said no work had been done when in fact, I saw that alterations had been made to the thumb drive. I wouldn't ever bring anything to them again because the story doesn't add up. Perhaps something had been done by the people who work for Michael without him being aware, but in that case, nothing was done by Michael to understand the discrepancy.
