It passed inspection for the first 2 years, and I had undercoating put on it. Now in 2026, with 53000 miles on it, it wouldn't pass inspection, because oil from a gasket leak was dripping on the exhaust pipe. When they showed me the undercarriage I was shocked to see how much rust was on it. To make matters even worse, they wanted over $4,000 to fix it! I emailed the original sales person with my problem. 5 days later they wrote that the email had gone into their spam section. I still owed $10,000 on my loan and the car was only worth $10,000, so I had nothing to trade in at the new dealership I went to!

He was quoting $2,500+ for the steering rack and $553+ for the bumper reinforcement. I took my car to three other reputable shops in the Portland area. I was quoted $337 for the bumper reinforcement with OEM part, and the repair man even told my father and I that we could replace it ourselves because my father was able to remove the bumper cover himself. The other shops I went to told me I only needed my inner tie rod replaced including a wheel alignment. I got this repair done for $220 dollars and my car drives great. It is a 2013 Honda CRV with 70,000 miles that has never had issues on the road. The one difference between going to Carter's and going to the other repair shops is that I went ALONE (without my father) to Carter's a as young woman. I remember when I dropped my keys off at Carter's and the man at the desk called me "sweety." Unprofessional and patronizing. Carters is deceitful, greedy, and untrustworthy. This small 2 bay garage was formerly Chip's Service Center when it was recommended to me over 10…read moreyears ago when I moved to the area and wanted service on our Subaru Forester. They advertised at that time as their mechanics really knowing Subarus and I wanted a garage (like everyone else) that would provide solid service without ripping you off like the dealerships tend to do. We had SO much work done on our car over many years here-they did everything from multiple brake jobs, to basic maintenance and timing belt and head gaskets, etc to keep us running for 145K+ miles as the car got older. Among many other positives, two things stand out to me: 1) if I needed them to address a new noise or concern such as a light going on, etc and called, they often suggested I drop by and briefly check it out and were able to address a quick fuse change or provide a quick assessment of what might be the issue, sometimes within the same day and this was never charged for. That's service you don't get many places. 2) I feel they are honest- there were times we had to decide to be strategic about some maintenance and they provide you feedback on what might be coming up maintenance wise, not just saying you need it done now unless it truly does need to be completed now and their best idea of timeframe to do it by. This allowed me to plan a lot more for the next $$$ to maintain the car and feel we were on top of the current condition of the car. Another example: there was a time I had taken the car to a dealership and that service advisor said I needed to replace both leaking head gaskets now and failed my Maine inspection. Got second opinion by this garage, they showed me the car on lift and informed me only ONE gasket needed to be done soon and was leaking but the other wasn't even needing to be addressed! Passed my Maine state inspection that day! Only negatives: it's small- that means longer waits to get into schedule during the week they are open (closed weekends) , only two seats right in the entry way if you opt to wait, have no courtesy shuttle or loaner car and do not do tires or alignments. All in all I would definitely recommend this garage and the cost is less than dealerships.

John and Breen & Co. are not just professional, but personable and understanding. Yes, Hamilton's is a business, and they make money, but John will not hesitate to tell us when it's in our interest to take it to the dealer for service because of a warranty issue - he will even call the dealer and ensure that our parts are covered. He will always work on getting us the best price he can on what we need, even when he acknowledges that it *could* be cheaper elsewhere. To me, at this point, even if it's a few bucks more, I just trust Hamilton's more, and that's worth a ton.
