We've been purchasing Primavera products for many years until now. Their processing procedures require review. A suggestion would be to have the entire staff to taste their own product. For almost $4.00 per tamale, the Roasted Green Chile & Jack Cheese Tamales had green roughage with every bite. It was a nuisance having to spit out each bite. It was an outstanding product. fifteen plus years later, I have noticed the quality has declined. For instance, I am partial to the butternut squash tamales. I have counted as few as 3 corn kernles,a drop of green chili and cheese at the bottom only. The tamales taste delicious as always but the filling needs to be improved. These store bought tamales are heaven. The corn is sweet, with real corn kernals embedded in the tamale exterior. The cheese, roasted chiles are fresh and chunky. Primavera hits the spot for Christmastime tamales. While they've raised their price, they have improved overall quality. The last time I had them, I was "meh." Seriously, I had gone to Grocery Outlet&was comparing canned beef tamales out of the Midwest. Tamales are masa packages of deliciousness. No surprise the Primavera tamales on the shelves at Browns Valley Market had practically been picked clean. Their mushroom/spinach/salsa with 2 cheeses flavor is excellent. It sounds like a confused mishmash (especially with the mushrooms), and it is a coherent, filling whole. In the autumn/winter season, their butternut squash/corn flavor is sweet&savory perfection. For years I have loved these great tomales especially my favorite Butternut Squash Tamales but the last few times I have purchased them from the store, I have been very disappointed. I just bought today at Marina Supermarket "Roasted Green Chiles with Jack Cheese," tamales thinking it was the same as the "Spicy Roasted Green Chiles tamales" I bought last week, and I was so disappointed with product .Th corn husk covering was inadequate with paper wrapping substitute used to hold together the tamales. Consequently, the tamales leaked out of the wrapping, also disgustingly, there was a strand of black hair inside the wrapper too, yuck, yuck, yuck. I was trying to reach somebody in the offices, but they are remarkably below the radar on the Internet. I love this salsa, so much I drive 20 minutes to get it even though I have four other grocery stores between my home and that destination. We've been buying it for a couple of years. I just picked one up from Whole Foods Market in Redwood City and something has changed that I am alarmed about! This batch tastes like marinara sauce. The color I noticed when I went to grab it out of the case was bright orange, not the deep red color that I'm used to. The consistency looked different too, chunky like tomato sauce and when I dipped the chip in and took a bite, it tasted completely bland. I'm hoping this is just a momentary problem with one batch and not that the company has been bought out by a bigger entity who messed up the recipe or that the company messed with the recipe. If anyone from Salsa of Sonoma happens to read this and respond, I would love to know what you think happened here. I'm a loyal fan though. Don't go here unless invited by a sandwich board. You are probably familiar with the tamales (Sonoma Market, Ferry Building Farmers Market, Whole Foods) and you know they are good. So, you might think that next time you are in Sonoma you'll swing by to buy them at the source. Beware! This is the factory, not a storefront. We looked up the address and drove up and down Sonoma Highway looking for it. The numbers here are whacked, 17070 is before 17000 for some reason. We recognized the smell of tamales being cooked so we walked towards the door. It looked like an office and the door was locked, so we tried around the back past the junk in the yard ( a rusty clothes washer and such ) and that's where we surprised eight Mexican maidens doing their thing, flapping, pounding, grinding, slicing... and carrying a large tray of fresh tortillas. [start of dramatization] Can we buy your tamales? Blank stares. Donde estan los tamales? Por favor. More blank stares. Yo quiero los tamales. (I'm pleading now). Por favor. More blank stares and a giggle. I then notice a stack of tamales by the door and start moving closer to them. It's at this point that a young woman places herself between me and the tamales arms outstretched. "No buy here. Sonoma Market." [end of dramatization] I've heard, although I can't corroborate, that on occasion they sell from here. So, if you are driving up Sonoma Highway around Agua Caliente, look for a sandwich board advertising the fact. Otherwise, leave the nice ladies alone to do their thing. These are excellent organic vegetarian tamales. Some are even vegan, I think. Alan first discovered them at the Piedmont Grocery several years ago and they have been an occasional dinnertime treat. I know they're available elsewhere in the Bay Area but we haven't seriously searched. Sunday we were at the El Cerrito Natural Grocery picking up potatoes and, wandering around to see what else they had, happened upon a whole stash of these. They come 4 to a package. We bought butternut squash w/ roasted green chiles. We had them for dinner tonight and they were delicious as always, topped w/ a mango salsa. The best tamales I've had anywhere; the pork or chicken ones are excellent, but so are the veggie and cheese varieties. We live in Sonoma part-time and usually pick up the tamales (along with salsa) at the Friday farmers market. They used to sell them at the factory (that is, at this location) but the local bureaucrat-nerds cited them for not having the right license to sell retail, so they had to stop. Was at Whole Foods and saw that they had a salsa, I thought wow because that is a really good brand so I decided to try it. It was the worst salsa I have ever had. It tasted like a canned tomato sauce you would use to make spaghetti with. No Mexican seasoning like cumin or chili powder or even garlic. Very bland and it was the most expensive salsa they carried! I just drove clear across town bcuz of the raving review tht the mercury news had on the pumpkin tamales and they are bland and tasteless!! Save your money they charge 11.00 @ whole foods for 4!! I've had the frozen tamales tht trader joes sells during the holidays and they are fabulous I can hardly wait for them and for $10.00 you get close to a dozen btw try the veggie ones----yum yum. My wife bought a package of four Black Bean Bonanza tamales from Whole Foods in Roseville last Thursday, 2/2. The "sell by" date was 2/6. When I opened up the package Monday morning (2/6) to get two to take to work, it was apparent that something was "off." Nevertheless I smothered them in guacamole and salsa and they were OK.
