I have had two great experiences at Primary Eyecare. The Barracks Road location is spacious, modern, and clean. The wait is typically not very long and they are efficient. They seem to really move through customers without making you feel rushed. They're also not trying to convince you to do every exam to charge extra. Last year I got my eyes dialated, and this year I did not need to. I didn't want to but was glad to hear my doctor recommend holding off for another year herself! Makes you feel like they care, at least a little bit. Overall the staff is friendly and helpful. Did not find/have problems. They are relatively easy to set an appointment with (online or by phone). I say this is one of my better eye appointment experiences without feeling like I've wasted a whole day! read more

All she needed was lenses they said they sent my glasses under her name so my glasses come in and her lenses never did a week and a half later they her a message that hers are in so she drives back over there and they're not in a week after that, they call her and tell her they need to do an outline of her glasses because all she is getting is lenses call back another week later and was told that something messed up so they had to just resend it back in today even knowing that I called Tuesday to find out about them and nobody said a word to me about this so now it will be more time they are absolutely horrible and incompetent read more

I chose the Pantops (Peter Jefferson Pkwy) office after discovering that it was much closer to where I live. I had already visited other MyEyeDr offices to shop and compare, as I was looking to get a backup pair of prescription sunglasses. I found most of the other offices far more customer-friendly than this one. With the exception of Avory, who was most impressive in her courtesy, professionalism and superb customer service skills, I found the front staff lacking in their approach to customer service. Unfortunately, I did not have an opportunity to work with Avory. However, I continually observed her performance with other customers while I was working with Rashonda. Avory genuinely seemed happy to be working there and always verbally welcomed guests as they entered the office. Other staff appeared to have a perfunctory "just going through the motions" attitude about their work. I am rating this office three stars, rather than only two stars, because everyone seemed to be technically competent in their trade. Thus, if you care only about technical proficiency, then this office is fine. But if you're like me and you want not only technical competence from your eye doctor experience, but a friendly, engaging interaction where you feel welcomed and glad you came, then I don't think the Pantops (Jefferson Parkwy) office is your best option. If you are lucky to work with Avory, then you should walk away feeling very pleased with your experience. Otherwise, with the other front staff, I recommend looking elsewhere. Never got to see the docs! We were in the waiting area 25 minutes early and were never called for hubby's appointment. Then, they said something about someone not being back from lunch when we asked. When we inquired the second time, we learned they wouldn't take him since the appointment time had passed and some paperwork had not been signed. Next, I learned my confirmed (via text) appointment was moved 90 minutes after the original appointment time. There seems to be a revolving door for their admin roles at Barracks Rd, so confirm your appointment before driving a ways to get disappointed, irritated, and wasting your time. I've gone there for years, but this was the last time. My advice, if you want to see them: DO NOT BOOK ONLINE. CALL THEM. Come a few minutes early to complete the paperwork and you may not get sucked into their scheduling mess. read more

Had an excellent eye exam with Dr. Janice and had a fairly good experience with ordering my glasses -- so why the 1 star? Their wheels fell off from that point forward! The exam was $99; quite reasonable. The glasses I ordered were $770 from a discontinued frame selection. I thought that was a bit on the pricey side for a discontinued frame but they were what I wanted AND I really needed to get new glasses ASAP. I coordinated with the staff to pick my glasses up when I was going to be in town 2+ weeks later. I arrived and they had no glasses NOR had they called to tell me there was a delay! Unfortunately, I was not going to be back to CVille for 5 more weeks so I was in a huge bind. They offered to ship them to me but the glasses were Progressives so I needed to make sure they were sitting/fitting correctly so I declined. I ended up working with a local My Eye Dr who had the Barrack's Road location ship the glasses to them, taking an additional 5 days. I arrived at the local My Eye Dr to find the glasses were dark from the tinting (something I was assured would not happen) ***AND*** they were the WRONG GLASSES ! I'm not sure if Barracks ordered the wrong shaped lenses or if the lab made the error, but they were the wrong lenses (I ordered square-ish, they manufactured roundish cat-eye-ish in the corners.....! They did seem to give me clear vision but they were frameless lenses with the wrong shaped lenses. Actually, when I ordered, my husband went by with me & saw me in them so he could attest to the shape). I am now 3 weeks down the road and I'm back at square 1 with my glasses. I need to find glasses, order, pay, and wait another 2-3 weeks AND I NEED TO WAIT FOR "CORPORATE" TO CUT AND SEND A PAPER CHECK IN A FEW WEEKS....FOR SOMETHING I PUT ON MY CREDIT CARD !??! Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever ever again will I use this group and THAT is a sad thing to say because I felt I got an exceptional eye exam. Keystone cops. Absolutely ridiculous. I did talk to a nurse at UVA who said she had great experiences here BEFORE they sold out to MyEyeDr but the francise/business end of this location has not been a good change for her, either. That said, she did say the MyEyeDr location near Wegman's is much better. I'm not sure I have the nerve to give ANY of their locations my money. Time will tell. But for now, I've waited WEEKS and I'm no closer to having glasses on my face. EXTRAORDINARILY FRUSTRATING. read more

The doctor was nice and knowledgeable but I mentioned that I would like to consider trying contact lenses but they neglected to tell me that it was an additional charge out of pocket for lense fitting. Then I asked what is my prescription for reading glasses and I was told that I had to have a different eye exam for that. I thought an eye exam would result in a final prescription for your vision... I had no idea that each exam was for either lenses or eye glasses. Lesson learned. It would have been nice to have that explained since I hadn't tried contact lenses for over 20 years. read more

The people are super friendly. I've never seen anyone so interested in helping me pick out glasses. This location also offers you the ability to take a digital picture of your eye to have on file. You can then compare your eye over time using these images. Technology is pretty nifty! (Beware -- it's an extra 30 bucks). read more

In fact, I have followed him to which ever local office he is working at. He takes his time to get to know you, your style and comfort level. I have purchased multiple frames over the years and Alex will help me balance out my collection without pressure, but more with my needs. He provides over the top business service helping you to make the most of your eye plan, while working with your budget. Once he gets to know you he will hand pick frames and really make sure you are happy and look great! His sense of style carries over to his clients so you feel fashionable and elegant. He is truly remarkable. I can't imagine working with anyone else. My Eye Dr is fortunate to have such a devoted employee who provides amazing customer service. I hadn't had an eye exam in eight years. Made an appointment at the 5th Street Station. The office is great: bright, open, expansive with state of the art equipment. The frame selection is displayed in kiosks that invite you to roam from one to the other. The staff are friendly and helpful. Samantha performed my preliminary tests. She was pleasant and explained each procedure thoroughly. I then saw Dr Chelsea Johnson who impressed me with her friendly professionalism and quiet confidence. She did a thorough exam then took pictures of my inner eyes which she showed me while explaining what she saw in them. She then recommended a course of action. By far the worst experience with eye doctor and glasses. I have had many glasses over the years. I just needed another pair of bifocals, similar to one I had two years ago, but just a little stronger prescription. The first Exam yielded an "un-usable" prescription. The exam was "redone" which yielded a significantly (drastically different) prescription. When these glasses were made up the long distance worked fine but the "readers" were unusable. They have used my insurance credit for the next two years. No refund. And they will not make good on the glasses. That is after a bad exam with an inexperienced vision person, I was left with an unusable prescription. After a redone prescription there is something wrong with the "reader portion" of the bifocals and I am left "out of luck". That is after $150 for glasses, and $300 for bifocals and a $114 upcharge...I have nothing I can use. read more

I only came in for a basic eye exam. I was able to get scheduled in a few days after I called to make an appointment. Upon entering the building, the facility was very clean and very organized. Since my appointment was at 8:20am, there was no one in line and I was able to see the doctor within 10 minutes of walking in the door. I do not see eye doctors on a regular basis, so I do not know what makes one better than the other. However... Dr. Parker is a great doctor. She was able to go into greater detail, if I asked about it. I was told clearly what was covered under my insurance and what required payment. Overall a great experience. Routine eye exam. I also took a set of my old contacts for a reference to my prescriptions and such. They asked if I wear contacts since I am currently wearing glasses. I mention that I only wear contacts to the range - once a year because they just don't seem to work for bifocals. They mention that there are lots of new kinds out and I should try again. I thought ... well I wore contacts for 30 years successfully; possibly they have a new kind of bifocals? So they gave me a trial set - I swear I could not even feel them in my eyes! Very comfortable. On a plus side, I can actually read a book. But when I look across the room, it's even WORSE than when I'm not wearing my glasses. I'm assured, my eyes will adjust...this was at 2pm. and a "fitting" charge of $140....because they FIT.... By 9pm I threw them in the trash because of the raging headache which I'm sure is due to fuzzy vision for 6 hours. I could have put the $140 toward a set of frames....BUT THEY FIT..... it was a FITTING charge.... Should have just gone back into Richmond. read more

By far the worst experience I've ever had with an eye exam/glasses. The doctor was fine, it's the people on the floor that are the issue. First, they WILL NOT GIVE YOU a copy of your prescription unless you beg, plead, and basically have to threaten... instead "We'll keep it here when you're ready to pick out your frames." Um, no. After you told me that it'd take several weeks for the glasses to come back from the lab that installs the lenses, and if i wanted to use my insurance, it'd be another two weeks on top of that, I'll go elsewhere, thank you. Also, the exam is the most expensive in town. Finally, my insurance will cover frames up to a certain dollar amount. The saleswoman said, "Oh the frames they cover are no good, I don't even show them to customers. Let's look over here instead." I left without even seeing the frames I specifically asked about. I will NEVER go here again and encourage everyone I know to go elsewhere. read more

I had the oddest experience there today. I have been getting glasses from them for at least 15 years and I went in to schedule an eye exam. They weren't sure if they still took my insurance, so I suggested that I go ahead and make an appointment and sort it out before the appt. next week, which the receptionist refused to do even though they had openings. Did she think I wouldn't pay if they didn't take my insurance? From someone who is a long-term patient? That's the first time I have ever been refused an appointment for something I am paying for! If they would have simply done the right thing in billing they would have gotten 5 stars. I am a CEO of a hospital so I am extremely familiar with insurance as well as billing. The doctor I saw was awesome. During my appointment she recognized I may have an internuclear ophthalmoplegia which was a thoughtful observation. I was there for new eyeglasses post hospitalization. However, she converted the appointment during the visit to a medical appointment. This means it would be billed under my medical insurance instead. Primary eyecare does not accept many major medical plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield but they accept BCBS vision. Long story short I got stuck with the entire bill. I asked them to SPLIT the cost with me since it would have been covered under vision they decided not to bill. They refused. I think it is wrong to convert an appointment and not let the patient know they will be billed for the full amount. read more

I recently moved to the area and this office is close to my residence. I was able to schedule a convenient appointment time. The paperwork to set up new patients is provided on their website, which made checking in for my 8am appointment a breeze. After my arrival, I was called back within minutes. Everyone is friendly - I felt very comfortable. Dr. Parker listened (really listened!) to my concerns and I felt as though my eyes were in good hands! Primary eyecare has very courteous and professional staff. The optometrist and assistants are very thorough and personable. When the prescription sunglasses I ordered arrived several weeks late, they were willing to work with me and comp polarization on my lenses. They are a company that is very concerned with their public image which is reflected by the excellent service which they provide. I will definitely be returning there for my next checkup! read more

I have very mixed feelings about this business. First the good. Dr. Henderson is brilliant and personable. He is excellent at putting his patients at ease and he is a top notch doctor. Now for the not-so-good. The optical portion is extremely overpriced, so get a Costco membership and get your glasses there. You will pay 1/3 and you will get better quality lenses, especially if you need progressives. Be prepared for a bit of a hard sell on getting glasses at Primary. When it's time to dilate your eyes, you will be taken out to the optical area, where a helpful sales person will want to sell you frames. Who chooses frames when their eyes are dilated? The Barracks Road office isn't bad about accepting no as an answer, but they are much more aggressive at Hollymead. The other downside is that you will fill out a ton of paperwork, and then the tech will ask you the exact same questions that were on the paperwork. Annoying! I will say that I needed an emergency appointment and although they had no sane day appointments, they explained my problem to Dr. Henderson and he fit me in at the end of the day. So go see Dr. Henderson and be prepared to deal with the annoyances. read more

Dr. Joe & Staff have all the most current diagnostic equipment to make examinations thorough, fast, and painless. I have been going here for years and I have never experienced anything but highly professional, friendly service from this practice.
