Combined with having plantar fasciitis in both feet and a tear in the tendon in my ankle, I was quite discourage. When Christine suggested that I take her Ease of Movement class on Zoom, I was hesitant because I wanted in-person instruction. I have been taking these classes via Zoom since last July and my life feels so much better! Most of my days are pain free, and my whole body moves so much more freely than it has in decades. With the focus on small movements, I've learned to stop pushing through pain. This in itself has been a huge breakthrough for me. Because I don't have to leave the house to go to class, I rarely miss a class. I told my son last night that starting these classes was the best thing that happened in 2020!

I've heard about the Himalayan Institute for a while, but finally took the plunge and signed up for a 6-week long class series of their "Level II" yoga classes last night. The Himalayan Institute is a wonderful 501(3)c non-profit that offers yoga classes, workshops, lectures, etc inside their elegant mansion on Delaware Ave. When you stop in, you feel like you're inside a cozy home. There's a place to take off your shoes and an immediate bookstore to your left. Further down, there's the main living room where classes take place. It helps to take a class that has 10-12 people and not too much more as the room can get pretty crowded with 16+ people or so I hear. Here's what stands out about the Himalayan Institute: their yoga classes generally center around a meditation-practice. As a result, I feel incredibly relaxed and focused afterward. As opposed to some classes (such as Evolation), where I sweat like I'm inside some Finnish bathhouse and leave the class with more of an exercise high. With most classes, you have to sign up for a full 6-week commitment (usually $80), although they do offer drop-in classes on Thursdays from 5:30-6:30pm for beginners ($5) and on Saturdays (9:30-11am) for a more intermediate ($10) practice. In summary, I adore their meditative approach, yoga teachers as well as the novelty of practicing yoga inside a cozy old mansion. Unfortunately, there are no accessible showers in the facility, but there is a bathroom where you can change.

Victor's skillset is very rare to happen across. He has a Masters in Exercise and Nutrition Sciences from UB's School of Public Health and Health Professions (where I happen to work in another dept - and I understand that the ENS program is an excellent one). Victor also has an accomplished background in body building (note: the gym is not a body building gym, rather it is family friendly and very welcoming for clients with health challenges). I've had some very challenging exercise related restrictions to work around, and I never expected the results that we have achieved to date. I doubted that I would ever be able to work out in a meaningful way again but Victor worked with me to find a path towards a sustainable fitness plan. Additionally, my two sons work out with Victor. To them, exercise is not a boring chore, rather they view it as a challenge that can be enjoyable and not lacking in creativity. I noticed the other two complaints posted as Yelp reviews. For my part, Victor has always responded to my inquiries in a timely fashion. He's been every bit a conscientious business owner. The studio is tucked back away from the street, with parking in the back. Just look for the Orange Crush sign and it's directly across the street. The studio consists of a spin studio (no bike reservations, so arrive early if you have a favorite) and an open fitness room with all the fun equipment (trx, med balls, bands, etc.). The bikes are pretty standard, with a digital read out, and are SPD compatible if you want to clip in. There are cubbies, benches, and wall hooks in the lobby area to store all of your things. The check in tablet is on the front desk right next to the towels (grab one, there aren't any in with the bikes!). There's also bathrooms and a shower out there. All of my classes have been with Ren, and she is amazing. Super motivating and made me feel like a regular on my very first visit!
