Lots of obstacles with mats to protect you when you fall. I highly recommend joining or just signing up for free play. It's literally fun for the whole family. We will be back for sure.

My 5 / 6 year old, despite being fairly athletic, wasn't able to do at least half of them due to the need to stretch far, be taller, etc. If you go on a super slow open gym time, there's usually plenty of employees working who are willing to help... but I did find that some of them really have no idea how to interact with smaller kids. (one was using phrases like "Gravitational pull" and "momentum" when trying to explain things to a 4 year old... ehhhhhhhh) Also, CAN WE PLEASE GET A CHANGING TABLE HERE? For heaven's sakes, it's the middle of winter and no one wants to change a poopy diaper on the floor of a bathroom. It's a KIDS' GYM. That means parents are bringing their families here --- please be 100% family friendly and put a couple changing tables in the bathrooms. Please please please. I wouldn't pay full price, but with a Groupon it's a nice day out of the house when you're stuck inside during winter. Oh, also, BRING YOUR OWN POWDER. Because sweaty little kid hands + hanging obstacles = blisters and ripped open palms. Take my word on it.

People often ask me how it is I have developed the physique that I have. I normally just smile and…read morebrush it off with an, "Oh you", but my secret is daily sleeves of Oreo cookies and Ritz crackers with lots of canned Cheez Whiz layered up generously on top (dedication). In an effort to balance out my ridiculous life choices with my desire to live to be 150, and continue to make such bad choices, I joined the Harborside CrossFit gym. As with most CrossFit gyms, the monthly price is steep at $150 (there are some discounts offered, such as for students, emergency responders, etc.). CrossFit, of course, is a name brand and it costs big bucks for name brands (I'm talking about you Q-Tips, Rollerblades). A lot of other gyms not affiliated with the vaunted CrossFit brand can get you in and sweaty for a lot less money, however, these other gyms aren't the same caliber as Harborside CrossFit. The kicker with this gym are the coaches. There are extraordinary coaches at this gym, specifically Jeff and Lindsay, whom I've spent the bulk of my time with. In addition to the fantastic tutelage they provide, they also act as personal trainers & nutritionalists, which would likely cost a lot more than $150 a month. Aside from being a workout savant whose opinions you trust because he obviously knows what he's talking about, Jeff flaunts a natural-born teaching instinct, and manner of delivering knowledge to his pupils uncanny to most, I suspect, in his field. He could put on a clinic for "How to field dress a three-day-old road killed skunk for consumption", and somehow he'd fill that class up with eager learners willing to put skunk on the menu, unbeknownst to their mouths, stomachs and colons, which would all be angry with them when they found out. And then there's Lindsay.... Her abilities far exceed the normal expectations of the human body. Not to mention, she NEVER eats Ritz crackers coated in cheese (I know, right?!) In fact, I'm convinced she's some kind of superhuman being, sent to our planet to gets us all into shape and/or save our very existence --as long as no one pelts her with kryptonite, of course-- and she does so with the coolest demeanor. She makes you realize just how selfish of a son-of-a-B that Clark Kent was, writing fake news and chasing tail at the Dailey Planet like a jerk. I can't guarantee you that you'll find the classes at Harborside CrossFit well suited for you, at least not at first. However, that's the whole point if you truly want to improve yourself and your fitness. Put yourself outside of your comfort zone, put the ice cream sandwiches down and slowly back away... then burpee yourself until you vomit (dedication).

Truly, sometimes you don't recognise how wonderful something is until it's gone. I used to work out…read moreat Rock Pile until fairly recently when I decided I needed to switch things up a bit. This is not the first time that Gemini caprice has led me astray. Rock Pile is an unpretentious space presided over by unpretentious people, native children of Buffalo and invested in the wellness and growth of this community. The space is capacious and the overall aura is minimalist but functional. You don't need very much to challenge your muscles beyond a squat rack, a barbell (and associated plates), pull-up bars, those gymnast rings, resistance bands and dumbbells: of these there are aplenty. My schedule does not allow me to take classes regularly, but the few I have taken have been challenging and edifying, but also fun. I have done my share of CrossFit gyms in my time, friends. Some are cult-y, some vulgar simulacra of Greek life and yet others run use a shame-based model to motivate. At RockPile, your fitness level does not present a barrier to partaking in CrossFit. Everyone is welcome and you can see it in the determination and confidence in the faces and gaits of the people who work out there. I know the provenance of the name of the gym, but, to me, there is a case to be made for us attendees as individual rocks: jagged, imperfect and in diverse shapes. In Madeline, Matt and Carmen's space, we all fall together in a perfect, coherent pile, our edges complementing each other. In conclusion: baby, I was a fool! The moment I can break up with my current joint, I'll be back...if you'll have me.

They are super welcoming and each class (two run concurrently) has a small group size intentionally so you get personalized attention and good review of your form. They can also help you make accommodations. I started doing grapevines instead of a run one time unprompted and the trainer wasn't mad (which I've had other places). Pretty much as long as you are pushing yourself, being respectful of others, and generally staying in the workout area they recognize it's your workout and not every exercise motion will work for everyone. Been super impressed to hear from friends about the community outside the gym as well and how they're adapting to COVID by participating in the Ride for Roswell and supporting fellow members in the Buffalo Marathon. Again, I learned through my trial week that crossfit is not for me (100% my decision), BUT I'm kinda sad it's not, because this place is awesome.

It is the second crossfit place…read moreI have tried and it is unique because it is a blend of crossfit and movnat (think natural movement) . This seems to mean we crawl a lot (that is way harder than it sounds). Crossfit generally is a fun way to work out because they are group classes focusing on full body movements that really challenge you, but there tends to be a great camaraderie. Rob, the owner, seems to teach 90-95% of the classes and he has a nice welcoming attitude and does not push hard on trying to sell you products and classes (if you like, you sign up ... he doesn't seem to really lobby people... they just like it or not ... most seem to like it). It's $150/month for unlimited classes so it costs more than joining a gym but you get something a lot better than a gym. If sign up as a couple the second person is 1/2 off. My only gripe is the class times. My kids are in school/daycare from 8am to 6pm, but there is only one class during that window. Schedule seems to work well for others though (I still can't get over how big that 5am class is!) Classes last an hour and happen at 5am, 6am, 9:30am, 5:30pm, and 6:30pm. When trying to find this place, look for the sign on Main street. It is behind the Apple Wood Cafe next to the Leon Beauty School (that Leon place keeps moving around though so maybe not the best landmark)
