I did some laps around the track and had no trouble finding a treadmill or bike. Over the years, I've frequented LA fitness gyms but I like the pace of YMCA as well. I like that this gym is close to my house. I also love the massage chairs. I like the kneading, compared to the feeling of the jets in the hydro bed. The jets feel too harsh for me. I use most of the weight machines and the recumbent bike. I also like that there's a separate area that you can stretch in and it has dumbbells and a couple of machines. There's also a filtered water fountain by the locker rooms.

They do now have them (not sure when they started having them), but I took my first one yesterday. I took a lower body class with their trainer, Andrew. He asked me my goals and took about the first 8 minutes of the class to assess my fitness level and pick the correct weights & exercises for me. He is great at his job. I am sore (in a good way) in all the target areas I needed, including glutes, hamstrings and quads... And I'm sure some other muscles in the vicinity I don't know the names of... Haha. How fun is that? Sounds like something we have to struggle to achieve. However, it doesn't have to be like that, because places like The Schoolhouse Wellness Center exist. It is located in a beautifully renovated building in a quiet, cozy nook of Lockport. Surrounded by a pretty, well maintained garden is an inviting and cheerful space. I felt only a good energy and positive feeling during my visit. I need to re-learn and constantly remind myself of the three "R"s; Relax Your Body, Restore Your Mind, Renew Your Spirit. Their website describes classes in Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Meditation, but I think the best way is to call and ask about the actual schedule. Also a variety of massage and bodywork treatments are available. It's such a wonderful place, worth giving it a try. Their mantra: "We believe the key to life is balance. A balance of work and play. Holding on and letting go. Chaos and calm. Giving and receiving. Strength and softness. Effort and ease. Inhale and exhale. Find that sweet spot."

I don't like to think back to the old days when I used to use the Lockport YMCA only very sporadically and this was one of the worst locations that I've actually been to. Staff were usually friendly but the place was so run down and how people paid to use it I will never know - the new facility is a million times better. I'm glad that they upgraded.

I think the thug that I am alway impressed with is how clean this place is, I have gone to other fitness centers and I have never been to a cleaner gym. The staff always is friendly, helpful and working so hard to make this place great!
