I had a really unprofessional experience here. Twice! This past year, I have gone in for two consults and never heard back from the artist. I was looking to get my first tattoo back in October 2015 and really liked the vibe I got walking in to the shop, everyone was courteous and friendly. I wasn't even close to getting tattooed but still nervous. I had researched Luis ahead of time and scheduled an appt for my best friend and I. Luis was very understanding that we were navigating new waters and talked us through the process. He said he'd have our designs back to us in 2 weeks and we never heard back. Second time, this past March, walk in with a different friend, consult goes quickly and efficiently with Luis again. He says he backed up, might take 3 weeks to draw it up and text it to me. Never heard back. Really frustrating because I had really wanted to work with him and liked his art. Both my friends and I went elsewhere because we felt ignored. I would give one star but the jewelry they have is top notch. Fun to look at while waiting for my appointments. read more

My friend and I wanted to get matching tattoos for our mutual birthday we looked at a few shops and settled on Luis as our artist. Every aspect of our experience at this shop was top notch. The reception people were polite and devoid of that aloof hipster manner that is prevalent in the skin art scene. Luis was so welcoming and positive about all our questions serious and mundane. This dude is so down to earth. Again no pretentious too cool attitude that a lot of artists try to propagate. This place is sparkling clean private and welcoming. I'm definitely gonna come back here for more ink. Thanks for reading my review y'all! And...big ups to Primal Decor for a super fun experience. read more

Excellent quality of both service and work. "Bedside manner" and aftercare are a standard part of every visit. Luis Lopez in particular does amazingly good tattoo work. read more

Excellent tattoo/piercing shop! So clean, beautifully decorated with lots of options for the jewelry of your choice. So helpful with guiding your decision so it is exactly what you want!! Very professional, friendly and helpful. I felt comfortable from the first phone call to the end of my visit! They made me an appointment when I was only visiting for the day. Valente pierced my nose, he was great; informative and upfront about everything, super friendly and helpful as well as professional! They even accommodated my husband and son to watch I would highly recommend this shop! read more

I am so stoked about my tattoo and am beyond grateful to Dan! He was super flexible with his schedule, was very professional yet easy-going, and is just an incredibly talented artist. I immediately felt comfortable and welcome when I walked into Primal Decor. The building has a really cool vibe and you can tell a lot of thought went into decorating it, and the girl in front (and on the phone) was a doll. She was genuinely friendly and helpful. The place is very clean and has a super unique feel. I plopped down on Dan's chair, showed him my old, faded, unfinished, and downright messed-up tattoo. He knew exactly what to do to make it new and to complete it! He did a very good job! I looked in the mirror and could not believe how gorgeous it was. He was so attentive to detail and free-handed some beautiful art. We did more than half of my tattoo and are finishing it next week! I have always been embarrassed to show my tat to people, but I'm sure not anymore. Everyone who has seen it agrees that it looks great. It didn't hurt, hardly bled, but is nice and dark. I will be back for more ink after this is finished for sure. I'm impressed and have so much appreciation for the level of skill that Dan possesses. If anyone asks me where to go for a tattoo or piercing I will send them to Primal Decor. Good Times! read more

Dan is seriously amazing! Came to him because I saw the great work he did for my friend. My situation is interesting because I had a bad experience with my previous tattoo artist he left me with a tattoo I was very unhappy with. Dan seriously made my dreams come true! He was able to make the old tattoo come to life. read more

Never have I ever felt so comfortable in a tattoo parlor. The staff was unbelievably friendly and clean. It was my first time in there to get a second opinion of a horribly done rook piercing and they put my mind at ease. Not only will I be back to have maybe more piercings done but I know I'll get ink done here in the near future. (: read more

I've been pierced by all three lovely ladies (Jennifer, Tiffany and Danielle) and the love I have for this place is similar to what a person would have for a hair salon. They know who I am when I call, they don't mind if I hang out and talk to them. They're very kind and welcoming. The jewelry and piercing is absolutely top shelf. Grade a quality everywhere. You can eat off the floors. They explain everything they're doing and they have a great eye for details and colors. My first tattoo was done by dan and I couldn't be more happy with it. Just simple words on my arm but he took the time to discuss placement and explained fading and such with me. He was patient when tattooing and it was very cost effective. Primal decor is my favorite place in humboldt county and I always count down to my next trip. read more

Valente is a great piercer and fun to talk to. The shop itself seems professional and clean and they wash their hands thoroughly and frequently. They walk you through everything from the jewelry to the needles and recovery Pricing is on the expensive side though. Including jewelry it was $140 for both ears. I'd never go to a mall piercer but still... oof read more

(Long awaited review) Got my tattoo done a year ago on my birthday by Dan. Really cool, chill tattoo artist. It was my first time and didn't know what I was getting myself into but he made the experience bearable. The shop has that homey and warm feeling to it. It was very clean and I really like how the place is well lit-it may just be my inner filmography talking-but the place is Instagram worthy. Dan also let my friends come in the room to watch me get tatted (which I thought was pretty awesome). #1 rule, don't make your artist sad by not tipping, always tip the artist or any type of service for that matter, especially if you feel they have done a swell job! Though I'm quite embarrassed and feel very sorry for not tipping him. I payed for the down payment after I got consulted and got my tattoo a week later. I assumed after being tatted, I would be charged the hourly fee and so I would use my card to pay for that as well as tip him. But Dan, is so kind (bless his heart) and said, since it was a small tattoo, the down payment covered it. But I couldn't tip him because I didn't have any cash with me. I feel sorry and ashamed for my incompetency. But I would definitely come back and get my big piece done here and I WILL TIP YOU DAN!!! (tip you for the last one too!) LOL :) read more

Got my tongue pierced by Valente today, was super nervous but he made the experience great and I don't think it could've have gone better. Thanks for being so patient with me and cool about my first time!!! Would highly recommend to anyone nervous about piercings, they're a great team :) read more

by far the best piercing experience i've ever had. before coming to primal i had 25 existing piercings & was coming in for the 26 & this is the best piercing experience i've ever had by a long shot. i chose primal because it's the only piercing parlor certified by the APP within 45 miles of humboldt state university. there's lots of closer parlors but none of them are APP certified. i would never visit a parlor not certified by the APP, but i had a custom industrial in mind that would take a high skill level so i was especially taking care to choose a shop i could trust. the owner Jenn has been piercing for over 20 years & has long since been a member of the APP. they were super careful choosing the right placement, & set aside an entire hour to make sure my placement was perfect. Jenn measured my ear, custom bent a bar to my anatomy, & walked me though every step. Jenn's extensive experience is obvious & they take care to make sure you're comfortable & know everything that's going on. they even scheduled to call me a week later to check in on my piercing & see how it was healing, something i've never had from a different shop. Jenn was calling & texting me to check in & make sure everything was moving the way it should & continued the service far after the initial piercing. i've never had a piercer take so much time being sure of the placement or check in after as much as at primal. When i had questions about the jewelry that weekend Jenn was there right at opening & was able to see me right away which was so appreciated because i'm sure they had other appointments lined up. if you want a competent piercer who's going to check in with you & walk you through every step primal is the place to go. i've already recommended it to friends of mine at the university & would encourage everyone to go. read more

Another great experience shop clean as usual . Sat with Luis for 4.5 hours, 10 out of 10 every time. This shop never disappoints

Stephanie gets a BIG thumbs up for dealing with me and Jennifer gets a BIG thumbs up for understanding me and giving me time! I came in for a brutal piercing, and in the end having just a regular P.A., but the experience was wonderful and something I will never forget! This was the 5th piercing shop I have visiting over the years, and I will tell you that the staff here win over everybody else! THANKS :~) And Jennifer, please enjoy that nice tip I left ya! You deserve it! read more

My boyfriend and I chose to go to Primal Decor for our nose piercings after we read reviews boasting about the stores cleanliness and good customer service. Our experience was amazing to say the least! We walked in on a Saturday, made an appointment for the next Tuesday, and were able to be squeezed in earlier in the day than our planned time. We both were pierced by Danielle, and were very pleased with our experience. She was kind and made us both feel welcome and comfortable right away. The whole process was super smooth- you can tell immedietly she has knowledge in her craft, and is thorough when it comes to sanitation and explanation. This shop does have a range of options- both for a lower end budget as well as a higher one. Overall we couldn't be happier: we love our piercings, and we loved the customer service of Primal Decor. Not a bad comment here :) read more

I've had piercings done elsewhere and they have always turned out funky or infected...that is not the case when it's done at Primal Decor. I now refuse to go anywhere else! The staff is super knowledgeable and talented. In terms of tattoos, also great. The shop is clean, professional, and comfortable to be in. There's no question when you're getting a tattoo that your permanent body modification is going to be a lifelong joy and not a regret! :P If you're worried about the price, their work is worth every penny and the jewelry they have for piercings is incredibly high quality. I refer anyone looking for tattoos and piercings to Primal Decor because they are as good as it gets! Woo! read more

I have been to primal many times over the last two years, and have to say BEST shop I've ever been in!! Super clean, family friendly, knowledgeable employees & such a warm atmosphere!! I have gotten a few tattoos from Dan, in which he did a family tattoo for 4 other family members & myself... IN ONE DAY!! ... Dare I say superhero? One thing, do not forget to tip!!!! I realized after my last session I had forgotten, and now feel extremely embarrassed about it!! Luckily I have a follow-up session with him & can compensate for his time and energy then!!! I have never gotten any piercings done here, however, would definitely be the first & only place I'd go!! Random thought: you can always tell how clean a place is by the bathroom, in which, theirs is always pristine! Keep up the good work, Primal!! read more

I made an appointment many days in advance for a tattoo consultation. Came in for that appointment and found out they made a mistake and put my name under a different time slot for the following week. Then proceeded to tell me the artist wasnt there, then changed the story later and said he is tattooing and instead some random person will do his consultation instead. Very unprofessional and irritating! I had to get my work shift covered and lost $150 dollars for a days work, eff this place. read more

Oh my gosh this is the best place in Humboldt to get a piercing. I haven't had a tattoo from them, but I'm sure it's also excellent!!! Such an adorable little spot. An old house converted into a tattoo shop?! What a cute idea! While I was waiting I had a look around at all the jewelry, which is a little out of my price range, but it's so gorgeous that I would definitely splurge and get a new nose ring. Anyway, the experience: The piercer is SO great! She's very experienced(18 years! Woah!) and so I felt like I was in good hands :) She went through all the aftercare and how it will feel and what to expect. I noticed that after everything she did, she would put on a new pair of gloves which I liked because then I know that everything is spit spot clean! Everything was very sanitary and perfect! Go here to get your piercings! read more

I got my nose pierced here a few months ago and have not had a single issue with it & I got my ears pierced some where else and have had nothing but issues with them till I got a new pair of earrings here and they healed right up! I am ferociously loyal to the folks at Primal Decor, particularly Jennifer. She's warm, kind, gentle, and I only see her once a year when I travel here for Christmas, but she remembers me every time and picks up the conversation right where it left off the last time. Working with her is one of the highlights of my holiday. This time I came in for changing out my nose jewelry, and she'd already picked out the perfect piece, and she made sure I could afford it. It looks beautiful, and I can already tell through the immediate soreness that it's going to be really comfortable. It's a gorgeous piece of jewelry, too, of very high quality like everything they sell. They're not the cheapest shop in the world, but it is worth every penny and then some, and I look forward to this every year. read more

I had a 5 star, amazing experience with Jennifer, who did my VCH piercing over the summer. My first time at Primal Decor was as good as it gets, from the time I made my initial call to ask about price and jewelry to the actual piercing experience. The person who answered the phone when I made my VCH appointment was super nice, informative, talked me through the different types of jewelry and all the possible prices. Words can't describe what a pleasant and comfortable experience I had at the shop. Went in for my first tattoo ever and Luis just did an incredible job. I reached out to Luis and from the get go was so willing to make everything work even though I was coming from out of town. I decided to get my sternum tattooed and I just felt comfortable no awkwardness and as soon as I had walked in the shop the girls made me feel so welcomed. I also went in to get my septum ring switched for a new one and it was just a quick and easy experience. I absolutely love you guys!! Primal Decor is the premier piercing (and now tattoo) business in Humboldt County. If you need someone to shove sharp pieces of metal through your skin, and do it as professionally as possible, Jason and the other folks here are your best bet. I had both of my lobes pierced a few years back at 12ga here, and couldn't have been happier with the experience. Everyone was very knowledgeable, friendly, precise, and most importantly professional. All of the equipment and rooms were as sterile as possible, and the jewelry were of the highest quality that I have seen. Jason took extreme care when measuring and piercing; making sure that it would be done as perfectly as possible. The prices may not be low, but you certainly get more than you pay for. Why be cheap when it comes to modifying your body? Humboldt County has a handful of very skilled and innovative body modification practitioners, and of them I have to say that Primal Decor is in all likelihood the best. read more

I made an appointment to see Luis. He was 10 minutes late and he called me back to his room to give me a consultation I explained what I wanted and he told me he would draw something up. He said the best way to contact him was through email so I emailed him a week later to get an update, no answer. I called and the front desk lady took a message, no call back. I emailed him several times for the next two weeks, and I never received a response. Wouldn't recommend this shop to my worst enemy. read more

I love Primal! When I hit my rebellious teenage years, this was the place I went to get a body piercing sure to freak out my parents. As I got older I decided to take them all out and of course regretted it. So this became the place to get some of my piercings reopened. I also got a white tattoo by Dan & almost 9 months later I still look at it in awe with a big grin on my face. They do fantastic work, are super friendly & they know their stuff. They are part of Association of Professional Piercers, which I really appreciate. If I'm going to have someone shove a needle through a body part for decorative purposes I really like knowing that everything is clean & sterile. It's the only place I will go to & I highly recommend them! read more

I got a tattoo with Dan on my 18th birthday, and I absolutely love it! He made adjustments on his sketch as i asked for them and i never felt uncomfortable or anything talking with him. UPDATE.... After my initial posting I received an email from the owner asking me to reconsider my rating and review. I did. She went into numerous details and reasoning about her business operation. I can appreciate all she said. She has a successful business plan and is sticking to it. Still, it escapes me why they can't quote the piercing price over the phone. Really, shouldn't they have a pretty good grasp of how much it costs them to provide such a service? Seems pretty routine to me. Of course there is a variation in price for jewelery but the piercing seems pretty straight forward to me. I understand why they can't compete with Piercing Pagoda. I might have still gone to Primal Decor paying more if they had just told me how much for one ear lobe piercing. I prefer spending my money locally supporting folks who live here but part of that arrangement is knowing how much services and items cost beforehand. Since all this dust up I have returned to Piercing Pagoda for my second and other ear piercing. Those women know what they're doing. Good hygiene is practiced. No problems. No infections. Exactly what I wanted, where I wanted and done without any attitude. ....and it was very inexpensive especially the second visit as I had a coupon that basically took half off the second piercing. That just can't be competed with. I understand. This mole hill has turned into an unnecessary mountain. I'm only one complaining customer. Still, I now wonder if she writes anyone who is less than fantastically enthused trying to change their rating as well. Still, should I ever desire a tattoo I would consider going to Primal Decor.....but using a different name as now mine has become persona non grata. read more

Primal Decor has been around as long as I can remember, and a visit there for a tattoo or piercing has long been a rite of passage for many a Humboldt County resident. I had my tongue pierced there and also got a medium to large back piece done there as well. Each was done be a different artist, but both were done professionally and I left a very happy camper (if pretty sore) in both instances. Prices are reasonable, and I would say for the quality they are even a little low. You can purchase piercing accessories, and if I remember correctly they also have smoking accessories. Tattoos are done in cubicles that are floor to ceiling, providing a great amount of privacy. Yay Primal Decor! read more
