by far the best piercing experience i've ever had. before coming to primal i had 25 existing piercings & was coming in for the 26 & this is the best piercing experience i've ever had by a long shot. i chose primal because it's the only piercing parlor certified by the APP within 45 miles of humboldt state university. there's lots of closer parlors but none of them are APP certified. i would never visit a parlor not certified by the APP, but i had a custom industrial in mind that would take a high skill level so i was especially taking care to choose a shop i could trust. the owner Jenn has been piercing for over 20 years & has long since been a member of the APP. they were super careful choosing the right placement, & set aside an entire hour to make sure my placement was perfect. Jenn measured my ear, custom bent a bar to my anatomy, & walked me though every step. Jenn's extensive experience is obvious & they take care to make sure you're comfortable & know everything that's going on. they even scheduled to call me a week later to check in on my piercing & see how it was healing, something i've never had from a different shop. Jenn was calling & texting me to check in & make sure everything was moving the way it should & continued the service far after the initial piercing. i've never had a piercer take so much time being sure of the placement or check in after as much as at primal. When i had questions about the jewelry that weekend Jenn was there right at opening & was able to see me right away which was so appreciated because i'm sure they had other appointments lined up. if you want a competent piercer who's going to check in with you & walk you through every step primal is the place to go. i've already recommended it to friends of mine at the university & would encourage everyone to go. read more

I had a really unprofessional experience here. Twice! This past year, I have gone in for two consults and never heard back from the artist. I was looking to get my first tattoo back in October 2015 and really liked the vibe I got walking in to the shop, everyone was courteous and friendly. I wasn't even close to getting tattooed but still nervous. I had researched Luis ahead of time and scheduled an appt for my best friend and I. Luis was very understanding that we were navigating new waters and talked us through the process. He said he'd have our designs back to us in 2 weeks and we never heard back. Second time, this past March, walk in with a different friend, consult goes quickly and efficiently with Luis again. He says he backed up, might take 3 weeks to draw it up and text it to me. Never heard back. Really frustrating because I had really wanted to work with him and liked his art. Both my friends and I went elsewhere because we felt ignored. I would give one star but the jewelry they have is top notch. Fun to look at while waiting for my appointments. read more

First off, I came in here and the place is dead, and they still insist on me making an appointment (even though they didn't ask me what I wanted).. Every employee I spoke to in my brief visit (2 women and 1 male) had very distasteful "holier than thou" attitudes. Second off, none of them actually asked what services I was seeking, they just assumed by my appearance. So I stood there while one of the women gave me the whole run-down on something I wasn't interested in, without letting me get a word in edgewise. Perhaps their work is great, but it's the worst customer service I've ever received by walking into a tattoo/piercing shop. Jennifer is an awesome piercer; very knowledgeable, friendly, and I'm always amazed that it doesn't hurt as much as I'm afraid it will ;) Luis is a fabulous tattoo artist, and boy does he come through in a pinch! I had a friend visiting for a few days, and at the end of her visit she decided she wanted to get a tattoo. This is one classy piercing and tattoo shop. First off the place is EXTREMELY CLEAN, they even have a separate room for their jewelry. I walked in hoping to find a replacement for my septum ( I had been wearing a retainer for months *ouch*). They immediately showed me some super high quality and affordable options. Tiffany was the piercer who offered to put the jewelry in for me. Besides being one of the nicest ladies ever she also knows her stuff and was answering my friends questions about their piercings while she was working on mine. Her attention to a sanitary work station is impressive. Everytime she needed to touch my face or change instruments she always made sure to wash her hands and pit on new gloves. She even waived the fee for inserting my jewelry ( which is usually $5). Those $5 immediately went to her tip because you should always tip your piercer! Their work is just as hard as the tattoo artist. read more

I am so stoked about my tattoo and am beyond grateful to Dan! He was super flexible with his schedule, was very professional yet easy-going, and is just an incredibly talented artist. I immediately felt comfortable and welcome when I walked into Primal Decor. The building has a really cool vibe and you can tell a lot of thought went into decorating it, and the girl in front (and on the phone) was a doll. She was genuinely friendly and helpful. The place is very clean and has a super unique feel. I plopped down on Dan's chair, showed him my old, faded, unfinished, and downright messed-up tattoo. He knew exactly what to do to make it new and to complete it! He did a very good job! I looked in the mirror and could not believe how gorgeous it was. He was so attentive to detail and free-handed some beautiful art. We did more than half of my tattoo and are finishing it next week! I have always been embarrassed to show my tat to people, but I'm sure not anymore. Everyone who has seen it agrees that it looks great. It didn't hurt, hardly bled, but is nice and dark. I will be back for more ink after this is finished for sure. I'm impressed and have so much appreciation for the level of skill that Dan possesses. I've been pierced by all three lovely ladies (Jennifer, Tiffany and Danielle) and the love I have for this place is similar to what a person would have for a hair salon. They know who I am when I call, they don't mind if I hang out and talk to them. They're very kind and welcoming. The jewelry and piercing is absolutely top shelf. Grade a quality everywhere. You can eat off the floors. They explain everything they're doing and they have a great eye for details and colors. My first tattoo was done by dan and I couldn't be more happy with it. Just simple words on my arm but he took the time to discuss placement and explained fading and such with me. He was patient when tattooing and it was very cost effective. (Long awaited review) Got my tattoo done a year ago on my birthday by Dan. Really cool, chill tattoo artist. It was my first time and didn't know what I was getting myself into but he made the experience bearable. The shop has that homey and warm feeling to it. It was very clean and I really like how the place is well lit-it may just be my inner filmography talking-but the place is Instagram worthy. Dan also let my friends come in the room to watch me get tatted (which I thought was pretty awesome). #1 rule, don't make your artist sad by not tipping, always tip the artist or any type of service for that matter, especially if you feel they have done a swell job! Though I'm quite embarrassed and feel very sorry for not tipping him. I payed for the down payment after I got consulted and got my tattoo a week later. I assumed after being tatted, I would be charged the hourly fee and so I would use my card to pay for that as well as tip him. But Dan, is so kind (bless his heart) and said, since it was a small tattoo, the down payment covered it. But I couldn't tip him because I didn't have any cash with me. I made an appointment many days in advance for a tattoo consultation. Came in for that appointment and found out they made a mistake and put my name under a different time slot for the following week. Then proceeded to tell me the artist wasnt there, then changed the story later and said he is tattooing and instead some random person will do his consultation instead. Very unprofessional and irritating! I had to get my work shift covered and lost $150 dollars for a days work, eff this place. read more

Our experience was amazing to say the least! We walked in on a Saturday, made an appointment for the next Tuesday, and were able to be squeezed in earlier in the day than our planned time. We both were pierced by Danielle, and were very pleased with our experience. She was kind and made us both feel welcome and comfortable right away. The whole process was super smooth- you can tell immedietly she has knowledge in her craft, and is thorough when it comes to sanitation and explanation. I've had piercings done elsewhere and they have always turned out funky or infected...that is not the case when it's done at Primal Decor. I now refuse to go anywhere else! The staff is super knowledgeable and talented. In terms of tattoos, also great. The shop is clean, professional, and comfortable to be in. There's no question when you're getting a tattoo that your permanent body modification is going to be a lifelong joy and not a regret! :P If you're worried about the price, their work is worth every penny and the jewelry they have for piercings is incredibly high quality. I have been to primal many times over the last two years, and have to say BEST shop I've ever been in!! Super clean, family friendly, knowledgeable employees & such a warm atmosphere!! I have gotten a few tattoos from Dan, in which he did a family tattoo for 4 other family members & myself... IN ONE DAY!! ... Dare I say superhero? One thing, do not forget to tip!!!! I realized after my last session I had forgotten, and now feel extremely embarrassed about it!! Luckily I have a follow-up session with him & can compensate for his time and energy then!!! I made an appointment to see Luis. He was 10 minutes late and he called me back to his room to give me a consultation I explained what I wanted and he told me he would draw something up. He said the best way to contact him was through email so I emailed him a week later to get an update, no answer. I called and the front desk lady took a message, no call back. Oh my gosh this is the best place in Humboldt to get a piercing. I haven't had a tattoo from them, but I'm sure it's also excellent!!! Such an adorable little spot. An old house converted into a tattoo shop?! What a cute idea! While I was waiting I had a look around at all the jewelry, which is a little out of my price range, but it's so gorgeous that I would definitely splurge and get a new nose ring. This summer I was visiting in Humboldt and lost an earring. I called Primal Decor and was given an appointment to come in the same day. Valente helped me pick a gem that would go with the rest of my earrings. I live in Oregon and have frequented the same studio for many years, due to the quality of work and jewelry, cleanliness of the studio, and friendly owner and staff. I could see some of the same brands at Primal Decor, and felt like it would get a "10 rating" or AAA++++ as I feel my local studio rates! I have family in Humboldt, so when visiting, will always go to Primal if I need any piercing or tattoo services! I read an April review stating someone had smelly piercings a couple months later and implied that Primal's jewelry was the cause. I have 37 piercings (36 earrings when I arrived), and Valente knew who manufactured many of my piercings, and I had him use Industrial Strength to replace the missing one. Unless "Olivia from April '19 review" had a very rare allergy, I cannot imagine any of Primal Decor's jewelry caused it. read more

I first got pierced here four years ago. While it was a fine experience then, I went back today to get larger gauge jewelry put in, and the place has gotten even better. In addition to being a lovely space and sparkling clean, and the staff being genuinely nice and helpful, my experience with Valente was great. He's very knowledgeable, careful, and again, really nice. While talking with him, we discussed the next tattoo I hope to get (a full sleeve).
