I chose Julie Wells from essential elements since she does deeper work and I needed followup from my rolfing appts. I felt that she was intuitive and seemed to do well with the "push-pull" of trying to get my body to accept a lot of deep pressure. She was kind and personable, etc. There were just two things I had a hard time with: when I got done with the massage, my back was hurting a bit in the mid-section, but I didn't say anything cuz I figured it was temporary. However, it continued to hurt for about 3 days, until I put a red-light band over it about 3 times. So, I wasn't sure that it was considered normal to have such lingering back pain, although I did have deep work, so.... the other thing is something probably most people don't even blink at, but I felt uncomfortable with a lot of buddist spirituality all over the place; it felt like it was in my face, and I felt like probably the way they would feel if my public place was full of crosses, statues of Jesus, and Jesus music. Maybe there shouldn't be any kind of particular spirituality in public places. read more

My sister and I had the body scrub treatment (with massage). The whole atmosphere from the moment you walk in is calming and inviting. We got a tour of the facility, which as a former massage therapist, I really enjoyed. The body scrub and shower were great. The shower was so nice I didn't want it to end! I upgraded to "the Works" massage - and I am so glad I did. It was honestly can say that the massage I got from Steven was one of the best I've ever received. He is very intuitive and it was fantastic! My sister also had a wonderful massage. She likes a lighter massage than I do and the massage therapist was just right for her. I attempted serval times in several different ways (phone call, text with this weird robot, online & store front in person) to make an appointment & all were unsuccessful! I never got a call back and online showed no availability for remainder of year which would only make since if they were closed due to the pandemic, which neighboring businesses clarified that they were indeed still open. Very poor customer communication. Never got a call back. Nowhere on their website or front door does it clarify that they are closed. This was a relaxing getaway gift that could have been very profitable. I will never gback nor would I recommend this business. read more

I've neglected getting body works here in Northern California for about two years, after 5 really poor experiences that left me feeling that my money was better spent in other ways. I took a chance with Stephanie and almost did not schedule because I was afraid I would be let down. I was surprised by how the place was set up. It was well thought out. I felt cared for. It felt intimate and the body work/massage was individually executed. I enjoyed my time and how I felt through the whole process. I was looking for a place to relax on my birthday, and my mom has told me about this spa. After browsing their website, I found a Couple's Retreat package that they offered for $220. It included two people enjoying a 40 minute infrared sauna session, a rainshower, and 1 hour hot stone massages. I thought the price was great! I was unable to book through their web site, so I called them up. The specific Couple's Retreat package wasn't an option due to the hot stone massage rooms not being open during my requested time. The woman I spoke with offered to give me something comparable, the only difference being that the massages would be full body and not hot stone. The price quoted was even $10 cheaper than the original package I was looking at. I was very pleased and eagerly booked. When we arrived at the spa, the woman working the front was very kind and poured us some fresh water with cranberry, orange, and cinnamon essence (it was during Christmas time). We filled out some paperwork and were ready to go. The infrared sauna had a digital panel, and we set our 40 minute timer on a relaxation program. Almost halfway through, we felt that we could withstand more heat, and we were easily able to adjust the controls from inside the sauna. It was incredibly relaxing and we got a nice sweat going. Immediately after, in the adjoining room, we walked into a rain shower to rinse off. The rain shower had a heavy flow of water and soothing lights. The bathroom shower had shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, and makeup remover. Basically everything you needed! After the shower, we slipped on luxurious robes and slide shoes that were provided to us. Afterwards, a light knock on the door indicated that our massage therapists were ready for us. We carried our belongings in these cute little wicker baskets to our massage rooms. The therapist I had was very kind and attentive, and pointed out some tension in my muscles due to stress. She very kindly talked to me about some ways to manage my stress and take care of my inflamed muscles. I felt so taken care of! The oils they used for the massage smelled amazing, and I left there fully relaxed, moisturized, and smelling great. I cannot wait to schedule another service with this spa! read more

This place is really an unexpected oasis in McKinleyville. A sanctuary, even. I was in town visiting with the in-laws for the holidays, and decided to treat myself to the Body Awareness Package at Essential Elements. My husband, the McKinleyville native, was very skeptical of whether a spa in McKinleyville tucked behind the old bar in town would meet my expectations and warned me that I was going to be disappointed. I wasn't! The yoga class with Stephanie was fantastic. Since it was a small class, I got plenty of personal attention to make sure my poses were just right, and she created a class that would both challenge us but not push us too hard. It was invigorating and relaxing. The sauna and rain shower were fun - the equipment is still fairly new, so it's still really nice. It was a great way to transition myself between the yoga class and the hot stone massage. Finally, the hot stone massage by Laura ROCKED (ha ha, stone massage, rocked, see what I did there? ha). No, really, Laura was great, she adjusted the pressure to what I liked, was careful about sensitive areas, and worked really hard to get the tension out of my shoulders. I get massages pretty regularly, and have gotten massages at all sorts of different spas (from no-frills places in Pasadena to Burke Williams, fancy spas in Santa Monica and Hollywood, and spa retreats in Desert Hot Springs) and I have to say that this treatment was definitely on par with the fancy spas you'd find elsewhere (though the spa itself is much, much, much tinier). All in all, it was a lovely New Year's Eve treat to myself, and I'd definitely go back the next time I'm in town! read more

I was visiting McKinleyville to see a friend and took the opportunity to check out the Essential Elements Spa located on Central Ave., downtown McKinleyville. When I walked in, the staff greeted me right away. There is a really cool waterfall under the main desk which was relaxing just walking in the door. I immediately went over to browse the high end selection of skin products and was happy to stock up! I began in the sauna for 30 minutes which felt amazing! I could literally feel the toxins leaving my body. I stepped into the rain shower and I felt like I was in heaven. Not only did the rain shower make me feel like I was at a resort on a tropical island, the body jets were the icing on the cake. I had a Scuplla wrinkle erasing facial treatment from Yvonne. This treatment made my skin feel tighter, brighter and more plump. I have had a lot of facials in my life but never from a medical grade esthetician and this is a game changer for aging skin. She gave me a thorough list of products she felt could help me based on my skin type. The outside isn't very inspiring, but once you walk through the doors, you're in a beautiful, peaceful setting. The sauna was wonderful, and I could have stayed in that shower all day. Woke up last night with an awful kink in my neck. Wasn't sure if I'd make it thru the day without someone working on it. I called at 12 and was worked in for 1245! Now that's amazing. Laura gave me the best massage I've ever had. She listened to my exact wishes and was so attentive to every detail. I'm also 16 weeks pregnant so she used the body pillows designed for pregnancy. Seriously even if I weren't pregnant the space carved out for your boobs was amazing. All other massages I've had I've been uncomfortable laying on my stomach because of the pressure on my chest. This was my second visit to the new spa. Previously had a massage, used the shower and the sauna. Definitely give this place a try, you won't be disappointed. On my wish list that would make me a more frequent visitor.... Extended evening hours by appointment. Some nights I don't leave work until 630.
