What a great locally owned business. I love going to Preuss and picking up the supplies for my different pets. They have all the different kinds of food I need for my pet rat, excellent fish equipment, and a knowledgeable staff. I do wish they kept their pocket pets in better tanks, preferably not tanks by actual small animal cages, but I understand they they don't. They seem to treat their animals well and try not to sell their pocket pets as feeders. This is a quality business that I will continue to patronize! read more

I've been a Preuss customer since before they moved to Old Town. My first purchase was a Beta in a bowl. That grew to three tanks, 20 fish, one cat and a need to visit at least once a week! The staff is so knowledgeable. If you haven't experienced Preuss you must go. You'll never go to a chain again. Also the Preusses walk the walk. They advocate cleaning up the Grand River and the CSO project which will result in less sewage in the river. They do educational programs with kids. This is a quality family-owned shop that deserves your come-look-see. read more

We've been to Preuss several times for fish, plants, etc. for our freshwater aquarium. The staff is very knowledgeable (the posters on many aquarium forums seem to agree) and helpful. They will NOT let you do a setup that is going to hurt your fish -- I remember awhile ago, someone wrote to the LSJ in a snit because Preuss wouldn't let sell them goldfish that they intended to keep in a bowl. I say, good for Preuss! The store itself is amazing to visit. There are tons of gorgeous aquariums, in addition to the fish that are actually for sale, and there's also a bird room, a stream with some massive koi, and lots more. We took our 17-month-old son on our last visit, and he loved everything! They don't sell puppies, which makes me happy, but I am a little disappointed to see kittens for sale. A friend used to work there, though, and assured me that they try to find the kittens good home, so I guess I can cope :) read more

This place is full of animals! They don't do dogs, but they have almost everything else. Including: Fish, Frogs, Spiders, Reptiles, Birds, and Cats. In the past I have had many different animals, but right now fish are what I am focused on. Preuss has a large selection of both fresh and saltwater fish, and are one of the few pet stores out there which will special order basically anything you want. In return for their relatively high prices you can expect unique fish. Particularly, lots of angel fish (they have an in house breeder), rare plecos, rainbow fish, and a large selection of African cichlids. Their fish staff tend to be aggressive in their tank starting recommendations, and have a little more knowledge and a lot more passion than your typical Big Box store employee. Awesome small animal department. Staff knows their stuff; we've bought several guinea pigs and now have a Preuss bunny. They know how to handle him when his nails get trimmed and treat him like a rock star when we board him (his favorite spa as Preuss doesn't board dogs). I can also attest that Preuss does get busy and doesn't spawn additional employees when this happens. I can also verify when I'm being helped the employee doesn't leave me halfway to assist another customer. Hope that helps clear up the negative reviews. read more

An impressive pet store. There's a waterfall outside, and a stream running through the building inside -- segregating the birds from the rest of the store. If you're into fish and birds, this is the store for you. Tons of bird cages, and some birds you can check out. I spent most of my time looking at the various fish. Tons of different kinds available, including single fish in plastic bags, and everything you'd need to house and take care of them. But given that C.'s folks have a cat -- Miss Kitty -- I concentrated on the cat toy aisle and walked away with a feather string rod and a catnip frog for the little tiger. She liked both. This is like the ultimate in pet store fun! A little river actually runs through the store and it features the most enormous koi/catfish I've ever seen in my life. For a $1 donation you can feed them! It was absolutely amazing to see my son feed the fish. Their selection of freshwater/marine fish doesn't seem beatable and it's worth noting that their tanks were pristine. The best part were the employees. Prior to coming, I saw a few YouTube videos and noted that the owner opened the door for us. That honestly felt like a special touch. Then, while drooling at the healthy, gorgeous fish, Jess asked me if I needed any help. There was no hard selling, no you need this and this and that, she actually had me leave the store nearly empty handed because she agreed that my fish tank still needed more time to cycle. She told me about what fish I should start thinking about, she was absolutely phenomenal, I can't say it enough, I told the cashier who was also really nice that I found a soul sister, lol. It's rare to find such an awesomely sustained privately owned store with obvious pride in ownership. They obviously go above and beyond finding knowledgeable employees, and the quality of their fish was unmistakable. I can't wait until my tank is cycled!!!! read more

Wow, Preuss. I've been coming here since I was a tiny child, back when they were located in Haslett. From elementary school through high school, I loved to stop in after school and pet the kitties and look at the fish - yeah, that was how i spent my free time. I'd been to their new store once before, but not in a long time. I stopped in with a bunch of people on Friday, including my boyfriend and his dad, who are both fish hobbyists/aficionados (a-fish-ionados?) We were all immediately impressed. The store sort of looks like....I don't know how to describe it....like an emporium. Like an amusement park of pet products. The layout is incredibly unique - you almost feel like you're outside, on an exploration. There are ponds of large fish with a small bridge running over it, an extensive fish department, and lots of creative decor. My boyfriend and his dad bought a fish, and spent 30 minutes talking to one of the staff members, who was a passionate fish owner and was incredibly helpful to them. My boyfriend says that all of the fish staff were knowledgeable, and they seem to have specialties (some know more about freshwater fish, some know more about saltwater fish). They quarantine all new fish meticulously, so you are less likely to take home a sick fish. We didn't see any dead fish in the tanks, and any quarantined tanks were clearly being closely monitored. They had a great selection of fish, a large number of tanks, and some lovely show tanks with great lighting. Their selection of products was excellent, in his opinion. I asked him to weigh in on this review since he's the fish expert, and we both agreed - 5 stars to Preuss. Come here for all your pet needs - please don't go to the chain pet stores! After needing to walk off the huge lunch at Pablo's, I decided to check out Preuss's (I was more impressed with the fact that they have a "torta" name after them at Pablo's). I had to see what the hype was all about... Talk about out of this world. I didn't have any intention of buying anything but was curious regarding the fish and tanks they had on hand and was impressed with the time the staff member took with me (even though I told her from the get-go I was only looking). Prices seem to be on par with other stores of this caliber, but I've never seen the variety fish and other plant life under one roof. read more

Is it a pet store or a mini-zoo? This place goes beyond just being a store and is an experience in of itself. Don't expect any dogs for sale, and just a few token cats. The rest is a wide selection of birds (big and small), fish (regular and exotic), small furry critters from weasels to hamsters, snakes, turtles, spiders, lizards etc. You can easily spend a hour just walking around this place looking at everything and then feel compelled to buy "something" just as the cost of "admission". I visited the store for the first time last year when I was up in Lansing. I think I about had a heart attack because of how large and just all-around incredible the store was, haha! This is, hands-down, my favorite pet store. Not only do the animals receive excellent care, but the employees are actually knowledgeable, friendly, and very helpful. They breed many of their own animals, and I had no complaints about the health of or care given to any of them (which is an extreme rarity in a pet store, especially one so large!). In fact, I made a 1 1/2 hour drive up to Lansing in November just to revisit the store again. I can assure you that I will be making that same drive again and again. I would have to say this is one of the most impressive pet stores, overall, that I have ever been to. The most noticeable thing I found to be impressive was how they care for the animals post-sale. You can go to other pet stores and they will sell you almost anything if you have a credit card. This store makes sure that you have everything set for the best experience for the pet, and they also will not sell you animals that have just come in, which is not common at other stores. I have purchased pets 20 minutes right after they got off the truck before. Their bird selection must be worth more than a quarter million dollars, and they are all kept very well. I love this place! If you are a reptile enthusiast, you can't beat Preuss. The staff are always helpful and knowledgeable... their advice has saved my bacon more than once. They are very beginner-friendly and are never snotty or condescending, but always encouraging and positive. Very wide selection of exotic and commonplace herps, all healthy and properly cared for unlike in some chain pet stores. Their crickets and feeder rodents (bred in-store- yes, they have live pinkies!) are always top-notch. My corn snakes never reject Preuss rats and mice. My business is always in the reptile department (I don't get cat supplies here because their prices are substantially higher than elsewhere) but the rest of the store is fun and fascinating, too. Make sure to pay a visit to the koi stream and say hi to the beautiful koi fish and their sturgeon friend. There is a huge aquarium section with a focus on saltwater fish, a bird section with everything from canaries and finches to seriously exotic parrots, and a small animal section with rats, hamsters, ferrets, etc. all housed in a converted vintage school bus. Teachers- Preuss is an awesome place for a field trip! The education staff are very helpful and this is one field trip that students of all ages will be captivated by. Bottom line- Preuss Pets is a Lansing treasure that everyone should visit- even if you aren't a pet owner or animal lover you will find it a fascinating experience! read more

Preuss Pets is awesome! Our toad recently outgrew his terrarium habitat, so we upgraded him to a bigger tank. We shop for most of our toad supplies at Preuss, and we got new terrarium decorations, a bark hide, a soaking bowl and 100 mealworms for ~$30, which is a reasonable price (comparable to the Petco at Frandor). The store itself is remarkable, with an indoor koi pond, an old VW bus turned into a rodent habitat, and every kind of fish and frog one can think of. It's basically a tiny, quirky zoo. All of the animals here appear very well-cared for, the habitats/tanks/terrariums/cages in the store are very nice environments, and employees regularly let birds out for enrichment/socialization. They have a little cubicle in the center of the store, where they occasionally offer shelter kittens for adoption. The employees we've met are always helpful and willing to offer recommendations and suggestions, and they appear to genuinely like working there. If you like animals at all, stop in just to take a look around. You won't be disappointed! read more

I cannot believe this place isn't consistently five stars. It's like a zoo in there, and you'll have just about as much fun. They've got what seems like thousands of birds, guinea pigs, and just about everything else imaginable, including a dozen spiders as big as your fist. Horrifying, but as long as they're behind glass I'll keep coming back. If they know your pet's name, they'll talk to you every time you come back. This is hands down the nicest pet store I have ever been to!! The employees are super knowledgeable and the selection is huge. They have your typical cat/dog supply section, as well as a huge fish department, a bird area and a great (best I have EVER seen!!!!) reptile and amphibian department. The animal displays are nicer than some zoos I have been to and they keep a few store pets in displays throughout the store. I could spend a day wandering around looking at everything. As a lifelong frog lover (and owner), I have been a long time admirer of the frog tanks that preuss has on display in the ncg movie theater in east lansing. As a wonderful surprise, my boyfriend purchased three dart frogs and a gorgeous vivarium (full of live plants) from pruess' a few months ago for my birthday. I recently moved to Chicago (the pet stores here are just ehh), but am willing to make the drive to lansing to shop at pruess because I know they take excellent care of their animals and only sell healthy ones. Last weekend, we were back to add two more frogs to our collection (they have the best selection). read more

I have been all over the country for work and always like to visit pet stores while killing time after work hours, especially bird stores. Although this place is very nicely put together, the prices are absolutely outrageous. The animals are very well cared for, however the birds are unbelievably overpriced and not at all socialized. Not sure who wants to purchase an overpriced nasty bird. I was shocked at the prices on bird toys, a huge bird toy I can buy where I live in California for all of $60 bucks was 179.00! You'd expect these crazy prices in California, not a small Midwest town. Lansing needs a pet store that makes owning and caring for a pet realistic. Best locally owned pet shop I can reach in about an hour. We've only looked at their freshwater tropical fish & supplies. Great selection of fish, plants, shrimp, and micro fish. Knowledgeable staff. They have in stock many items that are difficult to find elsewhere. Some things are a bit pricey, but overall worth it. I almost sabotaged my son's grades so he would have to stay enrolled at MSU so I had an excuse to visit Lansing on a regular basis. read more

They have lots of things for reptiles, and by far the best fish place in the area. They also stock Oxbow hay and products, so if you have a rabbit or the like, you'll find what you need. Most of their animals for sale are of the finned, feathered, or scaled variety. Their staff in aquariums is very knowledgeable, and willing to help you out no matter if you have a 1 gallon Betta tank or a 500 gallon reef. Prices are a bit high, but they're good people with great selection. read more

I used to love this store, but now things are just not the same. 1. The store is very crowded, so much so that you sometimes get stuck in the aisle and can only look at random tanks. Not really the stores fault but does make the experience a frustrating one. 2. Some of the employees are rude. I was fighting the crowd and finally got to look at a tank of fish we were waiting to see and finally the crowd around it moves. As I'm there looking at it with my wife, an employee walks up with two people and stands right in front of me and starts talking about the fish to them. No excuse me, no sorry just boom you don't exist to me. My wife asked an employee how to get help and he tells her were really busy. Yeah we see that, but could you at least pretend customers are a priority? They also don't engage you to see if you need help and usually don't even make eye contact so you gotta get strong with it and just approach and hope. 3. There is no system in place to help customers. Imagine just packs of people and you're fighting to get through and you have to approach a person and ask them for help. I did this yesterday and this guy says "oh yeah I just gotta finish helping these people out (appeared to be husband and wife). Now since it's so busy and so hard to get an employees attention I made sure I did not leave more than ten feet from that spot. I waited about 20 minutes and I was upset so I look around and that same guy was with a different girl. I wait another 5 minutes and he's gone I walk around pissed and hes over in the fish food section explaining fish food. I'm all for educating customers, but I was ready to buy and you have now picked a girl over me and are taking your time talking to her one on one in the fish food section....I waited 30 minutes total and finally just walked out. Hopefully he at least got a date out of it...... Preuss pets does have a good selection of fish and good knowledge to go with it. The prices are higher and the thought is that they are high because of a premium product. A chaotic and unhelpful environment with mostly apathetic employees does not shout premium product to me. It shouts that the store does not care because when you leave, someone else will be there to buy fish after you. If anyone from Preuss is reading this like a manager who cares, I have an idea that will help your store retain customers and make your long time and new customers feel like they actually matter to the business. Create a number system so that people can request assistance and they are given a number or entered into a que. This does three things, ensures that your customers are helped in the order that they request it (not sidelined for a pretty girl and some alone time in the fish food aisle), lets people know where they can receive help at and also lets people know roughly how long the wait will be or how many people are in front of them. Have people go to the desk in the fish section and request help and then receive a number or something from the desk. Then the employees go to the desk to get their next task instead of just doing their own thing. I've gone to Preuss since I was 16 and I am now 34, but my wife and my son don't even like to go there and now I don't think I do either....at least not during the weekends when everyone else there is trying to use the place as a free zoo.... read more

This is the best pet shop in Lansing as far as I'm concerned and I keep coming here to buy things for my older dog, young kittens, and community of freshwater fish. I love learning about products and getting pet food and grooming advice from competent staff. I also enjoy coming here with family simply to admire the exotic birds, fish, and reptiles. They have a large variety of unique species of both marine and freshwater fish, crabs, shrimp, and a whole lot more. New stock comes in all the time too! This is the place where I bought a beautiful and contemporary glass aquarium and given wonderful setup instruction from their fish department. I don't mind paying more for some things here because I get to do my share keeping animal loving expert people locally employed. read more

After literally 13+years of supporting and buying from this place I've finally had it and will not be returning. Why? Well let's start out with the fact that the staff while knowledgeable seem to really be lacking time management skills. They will literally ignore you, a regular customer who spends thousands to beat a dead horse about a new tank set up to someone who clearly could care less and is a one time buyer. There seems to be a huge disconnect in customer service skills. The prices have never been what I would consider excellent and lately with Amazon and other online sites it clearly doesn't make sense to get supplies from here when I can get free two day shipping. The store is nicely laid out and to someone coming there for the first time the experience likely will be mind blowing. Keep in mind this place is like having a relationship with a crazy girlfriend. At first she's fun to be around but then you start realizing there are some serious faults but you tolerate it because you keep telling yourself what she has to offer will be too hard to find. After repeated offenses and just plane poor experiences the place you came to love you loath and that's definitely Preuss for me. They act like they support local community yet the truth is they only care about maximizing how much they can make off uneducated customers. I know many people who locally breed reptiles, birds, fish ext. and the response is all the same. Debby and Rick Preuss want to pay pennies on the dollar for local breeders stock. This is just appalling when they then turn around and jack up the price to a ridiculous level. I refuse to sell animals to them for this reason. I urge you to rethink their image of supporting local communities. Most of the staff are very knowledgeable and I've had good experiences, however I miss the old fresh water fish people. Daren who is the head of freshwater now lacks social skills big time! He's rude condescending and again will spend hours talking to someone who's just looking while you literally are holding out cash in you hand ready to buy something. I used to bring in cuttings of aquarium plants to get store credit and it was a good relationship. After Daren took over it was games and lies nearly every time. Same issue he wanted to pay me an insulting credit and then turn around and sell my aquatic plants for high prices. They would also tell you that they couldn't give you a very good price because they were growing their own. This was just plan lies because you'd go in there and they never had that available. The moral of the story is if you want a place to visit like the zoo then Preuss is the place for you. If you want a healthy relationship with a locally owned pet store look elsewhere. Its a shame that this business has stopped listening to longstanding customers because I'd like to see them succeed. read more

This has gotta be the best pet store in the nation. I received a personal tour with the rest of my class and you could really tell that the family that owns it absolutely loves the place. They genuinely care for the animals, and it's for this reason that they hire workers they trust and train them until they know the information of their assigned department like the back of their hands. It's amazing to see so many people loving their jobs and the animals they look after. :) As for shopping, I've never seen a wider range of pet supplies in my life. The place honestly looks like a warehouse. They have everything under the sun that you could possibly be looking for, and there's always someone nearby to help you if you have any questions or concerns. The prices can be a little high, but it all depends on what you want. I bought some bags of Oxford dried fruit treats for my guinea pig and chinchilla and wasn't taken back by the price. I love this store. The staff truly cares about the creatures they care for and sell. I was grilled like a potential adoptive parent when I went in to buy a couple of Clown Loaches & 2 Platys. They asked what kind of a setup I had, how large, and how many critters I currently had in my tank. I appreciated their efforts to ensure the future well-being of the fish as much as possible. My only complaint is that I wish they had a wider variety of cat food to choose from, but that's hardly worth mentioning. This is a wonderful store. read more

Went in today to look at bearded dragons and Josh was beyond helpful. The amount of knowledge he passed along to us was amazing. He was truly helpful in a way that showed just how much he cared about the treatment and well being of the animals- and not just about making a sale (like in most pet stores). I went to buy a hamster for my classroom -- ended up at Preuss after no one at Petco had time to wait on me. The guy at Preuss was incredibly helpful, answered all my questions, let me take time to "meet" the different hamsters, finding one that would be best for kindergarteners, etc. He was awesome without pushing any products.
