Legacy Roofing installed the roof on my home for the previous owner following a severe hailstorm on…read moreJuly 17, 2017, when golf-ball-sized hail damaged roofs throughout the area. I know that Legacy performed the work because the previous owner was an American Family Insurance agent who regularly recommended Legacy to clients dealing with storm damage and chose the company to replace his own roof. The prior owner remembers the hail-storm because in all his years as an agent it was one of the most catastrophic storm damages that he had to deal with both personally and professionally. Nine years later, I experienced nearly 100 shingles coming off my roof during winds of approximately 40 mph, followed by water leaking into my home. Properly installed shingle roofs should not be damaged by 40 plus mph winds. After examining the shingles and discussing the situation with a representative associated with Legacy who is a former owner of the company, I learned that the shingles had been improperly nailed. The nails were placed too high, outside the designated fastening area--a condition known as high nailing. The former owner and two other roofing contractors who inspected the roof agreed that high nailing was present. Improper nail placement can significantly reduce a shingle's resistance to wind and increase the risk of shingles lifting or blowing off. We also identified a serious concern with the underlayment installation. The underlayment appears to have been installed correctly until the final course below the roof ridgeline, where the installation was not overlapped like the prior courses and allowed water to reach the roof decking and enter my home. These are not minor cosmetic issues. The combination of improperly nailed shingles and defective underlayment raises serious concerns about the quality of the original installation. The two independent roofing contractors I contacted have recommended replacing the entire roof because the high-nailing issue appears to extend throughout it. A roof should protect a home for many years, not leave its owner facing extensive shingle loss, leaks, and the expense of premature replacement. My roof is a ticking time bomb. I contacted the current owners of Legacy and offered a reasonable compromise. I was willing to contribute $2,500 toward the labor costs and pay $3,000 to have my solar panels removed and reinstalled. All I asked Legacy to contribute was the cost of the replacement shingles. In other words, I offered to cover the estimated labor and solar expenses rather than ask the company to pay for the entire replacement. Legacy declined, stating that it could not establish that the company had installed my roof because it could not locate the original records. This explanation is especially frustrating because I contacted Legacy in 2024 to obtain an estimate for replacing my skylights and specifically asked whether the original roof installation paperwork was available. I was told that the records were in storage and could not readily be located. At the time, I had no reason to believe that changes in company ownership were relevant to the missing paperwork. Legacy has been bought and sold several times since 2017. I understand that Legacy's current ownership may not have been involved when the roof was installed. However, from a homeowner's perspective, the inability to locate historical records does not resolve the concerns about the workmanship or the damage that has occurred. I believe the company had an opportunity to work toward a fair resolution but chose not to do so. From their perspective since they know I am the second owner and do not have the original paperwork, they are not highly motivated to locate the original paperwork. I am a homeowner, small business owner and contractor, and I understand how important a company's reputation is. I also understand that problems can occur in any business. What matters is how a company responds when credible concerns are raised and a customer makes a good-faith effort to find a reasonable solution. I am sharing my experience, along with photographs documenting the damage and the shingles' nail placement, so prospective customers can make an informed decision. You can see in the pictures where the blue arrows point to where the underlayment stopped and allow for water to go into the decking and then the house. The blue line shows where the shingle is supposed to be nailed and you can see the nail holes above it. I encourage anyone considering Legacy Roofing to ask about installation standards, quality control, record retention, and how the company handles workmanship concerns that arise after a job is completed. The are still struggling with management issues and turnover. Beware

I contacted them to see what could be done and they were able to paint them, which looks a lot better. My suggestion to future customers is to discuss your preference regarding concerns like that prior. Staining the mortar to match the tiles could insure they look nicer over the long run and also asking them to trowel the balls down a little flatter to blend in with the tile height would help hide them better. Lynch and staff had no idea about the great Tile Roofing Institute installation manual that gives pictorial steps to doing the job. It is very explicit and it is required to be used by Eagle Roofing tile manufacturer. Here is a short list of specific failings. 1. The roof leaks beneath my front porch. Can't go in or out when raining 2. Blue tiles on one side of roof, instead of contracted red/brown tiles. 3. Exposed nailing boards, not covered with Solite weather blocker as required or wrapped by underlayment. 4. Mortar instead of the required flashing in many places, including top flashing on penetrations. 5. Crushed gutter corners around the home, leaving leaks. One down-comer is blocked and water shoots out the sides. 6. No flat tiles beneath the hip starters, as required by manufacturer instructions. Water leaks onto underlayment. 7. Holes in the wood sheathing after moving Roof vents to other locations. 8. The valleys are very unsightly, tiles run into each other, violating AZ ROC standards. No clean spacing between tiles. 9. Black tar on a wall. 10. At least three broken main tiles. 11. Many chipped tiles, some larger than a quarter 12. flashing too short up the sides of the chimney above tile. 13. Broken tile beneath the rooftop fan plate and others beneath the front porch overhangs. 14. 3-rib valley metal is missing 15. Did not raise tube skylight when installing tile roof. 16. Mashed up pipe flashing around the home, doesn't lay flat on roof. 17. Underlayment isn't peel and stick as required 18. improper or absence of flashing and tiling around electrical conduit penetrations 19. Exposed underlayment 20. Broken hip tiles, patched instead of replaced 21. Broke 3 natural stone pavers by throwing broken roof tiles on them.
