Well equipped with tea/coffee facility, large flat sreen TV with freeview channels and a sofa. You take the included breakfast at the Toby carvery next door and they offer a "help yourself to veg" carvery (pork, turkey, beef) for £5.25 before 7.00pm (£7.50 after 7.00pm). The carvery was best value and I enjoyed it. Bank's cask ale at £1.99pp plus lagers from £2.45 to £2.85pp. I stayed for two nights and will definitely use an Innkeepers lodge again.

As I have read in other reviews, the hotel looks not to have been renovated in a while but that was not a show-stopper for me. It was older but my room was cozy and clean and my housekeeper took excellent care. It was so wonderful to get in from a long day of working to find towel animals with candy pieces and a heart! The food in the restaurant was good and the kitchen and bar staff were equally great. I had an all-around good experience here. So long as I am treated well and my surroundings are well kept, I am satisfied. I will stay here again on my next business trip!

Their was a long check-in queue when we arrived and the manager came over to apologise and say that one of the bar staff was going to come round and get us drinks to apologise. A nice gesture until we were told it was a choice of lemonade or coke! All areas of the hotel were clean and our room & ensuite were a good size. We were on the third floor which for some reason was very, very hot! The air con in the room worked well, but the corridor and communal areas were toasty. The hotel has a Living Well gym and pool attached. We never used the gym so I can't comment but did use the pool. We had a 10 minute wait when we arrived at the gym reception as they had ran out of clean towels, not ideal with a wriggly baby to entertain. The pool is a nice size but seemed to have a lot of sand at the bottom. Urgh. There is also a jacuzzi (which was out of order), a steam room and a sauna. The food at the hotel was good. There is a large retail park across the road from the hotel with a Nandos, Cinema, Tesco etc, and originally we were going to head out to eat dinner. But after the long wait to check in it was way past my son's dinner time and he was cranky so we ate in the bar (as the hotel restaurant didn't open till 7pm). Children eat free with a paying adult and the choice of food was great. Fresh veggies and hummus dip to start and pasta with a tomato sauce which was rammed with veggies go a big tick from me for being healthy and a big tick from my son for being delicious! Our food was tasty, a generous sized chicken burger. And breakfast the next morning had a great selection from the usual cooked selection, breads, pastries, fresh fruit, meats, cheeses, mmmmmm. One real annoyance was the lack of any baby change facilities in the communal areas of the hotel, made for some interesting nappy changes! This could be rectified by the hotel so easily.

It was refurbished in February 2004 as a hotel and restaurant. Some of the old parts of the house remain that is possible to be seen. We stayed in the Premier Inn hotel part for the full "George Elliot experience." The Premier Inn was relatively standard and nothing special or wrong. It was a pleasant stay and the hotel owner was very kind. He took us around the whole house and showed us all the George Elliot historical parts and told us the full history of the place. Regarding food, as the Griff House is pretty much in the middle of nowhere in England, the only option for food is the Beefeater restaurant that has also been built into the historic house. The Beefeater restaurant was decent but overpriced. At first when I had found this option for where to stay, I was a little skeptical and had uneasy feelings about a historical place being turned into something so commercial. However, they didn't do a bad job with the refurnishing and it was fun to stay in the house of such a great author! I definitely recommend it for all George Elliot fans.

As a travel critic and well known blogger with a focus on value, price gouging customers is not something I take lightly. When I asked the front desk clerk upon arrival why the price went up, I was told "That's the way we do it, prices change from day to day". Their "free" Internet was extremely difficult to connect to and so slow that it was useless, so we gave up rather than paying the extra £5 for "Premium" service, another indication that the company's greed outweighs customer needs and satisfaction. The room was so small that my wife and I had to take turns moving around the room because the double bed took up most of the room and while sitting at the small desk trying to connect to the useless Internet, my wife had to crawl over the bed to get around me and to her side of the bed. The staff at the adjoining Beefeater were great, but the food was mediocre and the prices quite high for what we got. My £15.99 ($22.60) sirloin must have been 8 ounces before cooking because it looked rather small and it was overcooked (I asked for medium-well and it was well-done). If a place called BEEFeater cannot cook a steak correctly, there must be something terribly wrong. The "unlimited" fries/chips were sparse and was never asked if I wanted more and the Cheddar, Pulled Ham and Mushroom Sauce (£1.99/$2.85 - bringing the total to £17.98/$25.45) was barely enough to cover the small steak. The only other thing I got on the plate was a single broiled tomato slice and one lonely sauteed mushroom. I can get quite a nice steak dinner at countless places in the States for $26, including a larger, better cut of meat and more/better fries, I would also get soup and/or salad, vegetables and bread for that price. Finally, I also found asking hotel guests to pay £8.95 ($25.30 for two) for breakfast also quite absurd. Whitbread (Premier Inn's parent company) obviously cares only about profit and not its customers and preserving their building's historical significance is clearly not a priority. They have ruined George Eliot's birthplace and childhood home both inside and out instead of restoring it to its former glory and taking advantage of Eliot's fame to bring her fans and English literature enthusiasts to Nuneaton and the property. How they got away with destroying such a historic property is unfathomable. The George Eliot Fellowship, dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of their famous, British namesake author and Nuneaton resident, has attempted, unsuccessfully, to persuade Premier Inn, Beefeater and Whitbread to restore the property to its former glory, promoting Eliot and Nuneaton with the respect they deserve. One would think the conglomerate would welcome the notoriety and income from such a famous and historic association, but with a 95% property capacity utilization rate, they apparently simply do not care. Coombe Abbey is a hidden gem. I'm originally from this neck of the woods, and remember many summer…read moredays playing in the public parks around the Abbey. At that time, it was a private building, but all of the grounds were open. Now it's a hotel, and WHAT a hotel! The entire place is a trip back in time. Very little of the original architecture has been changed, with new additions tastefully evoking the building's magisterial beauty, such as the dining area which is essentially a massive conservatory at the back of the building. We occupied two interconnecting rooms. We are definitely not the hotel's target demographic -- 2 adults and 4 young kids -- but they did absolutely everything possible to make our stay comfortable, enjoyable, and unforgettable (in a good way!). Each room had a feature bed, which was just wonderful. The bathrooms were extremely well-appointed, with fantastic showers and bath fittings that soothed away the jetlag and long days of touring the area. Speaking of which: Coombe Abbey is a fantastic base for things like Warwick Castle, Stratford, and Birmingham, especially if you want somewhere a little away from the bustle of regular tourist spots. Remember that the hotel is surrounded by its own land and acres of farmland, too. At night, there isn't a single noise; nothing intrudes on the quiet and serenity of this location. We slept like logs every night -- all of us, even the children. Breakfast was included in our booking, and it's pretty usual English hotel fare: buffet breakfast, including juices, cereals, pastries, yogurt, fresh fruit, and -- of course -- a fry-up. I believe that Coventry has a lot to offer to tourists. Unfortunately the city is doing a really poor job of redeveloping and marketing itself, and so a lot of good things are going to waste. Coombe Abbey should not be one of them. It's magnificent in every way.
