Many hotels use quilts and they are not adjustable which means that in hot weather you cannot reduce the thickness of the cover. The shower room was excellent. Staff service was fine. The hotel is very conveniently located next to Rugby station and there is a Tesco convenience store in the same building so if you only want a pastry for breakfast that is possible. Breakfast in the hotel is reasonable for the price but not great. Sausages, scrambled egg, beans and bacon, toast cut fruit, cereals and pastries. The sausages tasted cheap but generally it was acceptable. Overall this hotel was very good value for money and a clean comfortable place to stay.

Cracks in walls and tiles, dirty carpet, hairs on the bed, drawers that won't stay closed, windows that won't stay open. The second room was not as bad, but had pieces missing on the old blinds, and broken windows with tape holding them together. This once impressive building has fallen into a state of disrepair and is desperate for some TLC. Nice buffet breakfast, staff was friendly, but ill informed on the history of the building.

My husband and I stayed there the week before last on a recent trip to Rugby. It was one of the most romantic places I have ever stayed, but also a little creepy. Room 45's door to the closet room (which you must walk through to get to the bathroom) closed all by itself about an hour after we settled in, and loudly too. It could be that the building is not level, but still, it was weird. Then a couple days later we were sitting in the lobby and the door to the grandfather clock just swung open by itself. Again, probably a leveling issue, but still weird. We stayed in two different rooms, the first was room 45 (in the stables). The WiFi was not good in this room so we had to move to room 34 the next day. Reception was incredibly helpful. They immediately fulfilled our every request. Here are the pros and cons that I noticed during my stay. Cons 1) There are spiders everywhere. It must be an absolute nightmare for housekeeping to try to keep up with all the spiders. Whenever I encounter a spider inside, I typically catch it and let it outside, but being on vacation and not wanting to worry about spending our precious time doing this over and over again, we just killed them. I killed 7 and my husband killed 10. They were in almost every corner, behind both toilettes, in the hallway, and above the shower. I feel very guilty killing all of these wonderful little creatures, but nothing freaks me out more then feeling insects crawling on me as I am trying to go to sleep. 2) It appears that the carpet in both rooms has not been updated since Brownsover Hall was converted into a hotel in the 1970's. It grossed me out a little to think of everything that has happened on these carpets. 3) Privacy was a major issue because there were no sheer curtains to let natural light in while keeping our room and its contents private. The curtains, also from the 1970's (or earlier) are very heavy, torn, and difficult to maneuver. 4) There were not enough towels or toilette paper in either of the rooms. We had to ask for more. Pros 1) The staff is excellent and fulfilled all of our requests. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. It really made our stay a pleasant one. 2) The grounds are absolutely gorgeous . The variety of plants is really incredible and the lawns are so well kept. The scene makes for the most romantic walks. My husband and I walked from the hotel to the nature preserve on a beautiful fall day (see pics). When we crossed the canal bridge it was like stepping back in time. Once you are inside the gate of the nature preserve, you can walk along a beautiful path, lined with rose bushes, berries and mint. Magical. 3) The closets and bathrooms in both rooms have been recently renovated. They were very nice and both bathrooms had bathtubs, which I appreciated. There is nothing like a nice hot bath after a long day exploring a new place. 4) The food was incredibly delicious. I especially liked the pumpkin soup and salmon. The presentation was great and so was the service. I felt like I was eating in a five star restaurant. The owners of this hotel may not be interested in renovating guest rooms unless absolutely necessary, but it would be nice if they did because they could do a lot more business with some modernization and some simple aesthetic improvements. Their guests would be more comfortable as well. My recommendations for improvement to this hotel are the following... just incase management is reading this and wants feedback. 1) Mitigate the spider issue using a nontoxic method and take preventative measures to prevent more spiders from coming in. 2) Renovate the rooms by adding sheer curtains for privacy and some sort of hard floor. There are also too many walls that are blank. At times I felt like I was staying in a renovated warehouse. It would be nice if for example, there was a painting of horses in the stable rooms. The rooms could definitely use a theme. 3) Make 4 large towels, 2 hand towels and 2 full rolls of toilette paper standard for every bathroom. Staying here was one of the highlights of our vacation in England. I will definitely be staying here again and would recommend it to anyone who has an appreciation for historical places.

For starters I had the mussels with white wine, garlic and chilli, which was full of flavours, delicious! For mains I had the chicken stroganoff, which I opted to have with fresh vegetables instead of rice, which was very tasty, all the mains were silver served as well, a lovely touch to our meal. There was a large choice of delicious homemade desserts and we were even offered petit fours with our teas and coffees! We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal and we will definitely be visiting again soon!

I can only comment on the food, since I didn't stay at the hotel. Basically, we went along for the Mothers Day meal, £16 for three courses, and it was a bit abysmal. I don't know what their regular meals are like, but with this it felt like everything came from a packet or straight from Iceland. I don't think anything was actually prepared in the kitchen, just heated up. To make it worse, plates did not come to the table full, but instead 4 different waitresses arrived with different things and started building meals on the plates. This would have been fine if they could actually get round the table, but three of our party were so close to the wall they could barely move, so the waitresses had to lean over the whole length of the table. One waitress was brusque to the point of bossiness, one of those people who don't want to be doing their job and see customers as an inconvenience. The casserole tasted and looked like it came straight from a can with suspiciously easy to chew 'beef' which could have been anything, and the roast pork and roast beef other people had looked like packet slices, heated up. I think it's always suspicious if you can't see a roast being carved. As much as i dislike the president restaurant in London at least they do a decent proper roast, that you can actually see in front of you being carved up. My starter was melon, and you know what? I think it was just those sliced chunks you get in Tesco. Desserts could easily all been defrosted from Iceland. Nothing was fresh baked. Just disappointing. You get much better quality meals in a Wetherspoons, it's much cheaper, and they give you booze thrown in. Would dearly love to see this place on one of those Gordon Ramsay programmes.

Rooms are clean but very very hot during days with high temperature. Good thing we could leave the windows open day and night. Also a table fan is provided. For the price we paid (£76 twin room incl breakfast per night) I cannot complain. Friendly front desk staff and smooth check in. We were here during an event so I guess the hotel was almost fully booked, leading to waiting time in bar and tables were left uncleaned for hours. HOURS. I must say I was rather surprised that one of the girls at front desk did not know what the power sockets in her own country looked like. We were asking for adapters the entire weekend and the night before we were leaving they finally said "Yes, there are plenty of them, which one do you need?" First of all one that fits in UK sockets. At the moment i didn't remember what they looked like and grabbed two US sockets and asked her - does these fit in your power outlets? Yes she said... and guess what...they didn't... But unprofessional staff in bar and restaurant. During the dinner held by event organizers there were too many mistakes made. I don't know if it was because staff not being used to too many guests at a time. I would definitely stay here again. The bus stops just outside entrance and there is a restaurant and bar just 15 min away, walking distance. They accept AMEX.

Other folks were going on about the place being a bit dated, but I didn't see that at all! It seemed absolutely fine to me. I liked my room - while it was nothing remarkable, just a standard hotel room, it was perfectly nice really, and the bed was huge and comfortable. The temperature controls could have been a little bit better - it was just one big radiator which took a while to respond, and seemed to be set to come on and off at certain times not of my choosing. So I was a little cold when I went to bed (quite late). But it was fine and warm in the morning. Everything in the room worked, and it also had a fridge (useful to know for future). The lightbulbs were the old style incandescent ones which is also good - no horrible fluorescent or hideous energy saving ones like so many hotels nowadays. And there was free wi-fi, without having to do any tedious log in thing, so that was convenient and helpful. We had dinner at the hotel, and I thought the staff coped reasonably well. There were at least 50 or 60 of us so it was a big group to all get served at once. Some colleagues were remarking that the menu was a bit '1980s wedding' but I guess if you're going to choose prawn cocktail, some sort of chicken and gravy thing, and profiteroles, then yeah, it might seem that way! I was happy with how they catered for me (vegan and gluten free) - I thought they did well. I had roasted tomato soup, then a baked pepper with a tomato sauce, and other standard veg - baby potatoes, broccoli, green beans, mushrooms. I enjoyed it, and I was fine afterwards, so I know that there was no untoward ingredients! I didn't go down to breakfast the next day, so can't comment on how that was. Overall, I was happy to stay here, and would go back again.
