My group stayed here for two nights. We checked out and checked back in on a different day (which was planned in advance) My first room seemed nice at first glance, but upon closer inspection, it was a bit of a mess. Cracks in walls and tiles, dirty carpet, hairs on the bed, drawers that won't stay closed, windows that won't stay open. The second room was not as bad, but had pieces missing on the old blinds, and broken windows with tape holding them together. This once impressive building has fallen into a state of disrepair and is desperate for some TLC. Nice buffet breakfast, staff was friendly, but ill informed on the history of the building. read more

Brownsover Hall is a magical place, especially if you appreciate history and architecture. It takes you back in time. My husband and I stayed there the week before last on a recent trip to Rugby. It was one of the most romantic places I have ever stayed, but also a little creepy. Room 45's door to the closet room (which you must walk through to get to the bathroom) closed all by itself about an hour after we settled in, and loudly too. It could be that the building is not level, but still, it was weird. Then a couple days later we were sitting in the lobby and the door to the grandfather clock just swung open by itself. Again, probably a leveling issue, but still weird. We stayed in two different rooms, the first was room 45 (in the stables). The WiFi was not good in this room so we had to move to room 34 the next day. Reception was incredibly helpful. They immediately fulfilled our every request. Here are the pros and cons that I noticed during my stay. Cons 1) There are spiders everywhere. It must be an absolute nightmare for housekeeping to try to keep up with all the spiders. Whenever I encounter a spider inside, I typically catch it and let it outside, but being on vacation and not wanting to worry about spending our precious time doing this over and over again, we just killed them. I killed 7 and my husband killed 10. They were in almost every corner, behind both toilettes, in the hallway, and above the shower. I feel very guilty killing all of these wonderful little creatures, but nothing freaks me out more then feeling insects crawling on me as I am trying to go to sleep. 2) It appears that the carpet in both rooms has not been updated since Brownsover Hall was converted into a hotel in the 1970's. It grossed me out a little to think of everything that has happened on these carpets. 3) Privacy was a major issue because there were no sheer curtains to let natural light in while keeping our room and its contents private. The curtains, also from the 1970's (or earlier) are very heavy, torn, and difficult to maneuver. 4) There were not enough towels or toilette paper in either of the rooms. We had to ask for more. Pros 1) The staff is excellent and fulfilled all of our requests. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. It really made our stay a pleasant one. 2) The grounds are absolutely gorgeous . The variety of plants is really incredible and the lawns are so well kept. The scene makes for the most romantic walks. My husband and I walked from the hotel to the nature preserve on a beautiful fall day (see pics). When we crossed the canal bridge it was like stepping back in time. Once you are inside the gate of the nature preserve, you can walk along a beautiful path, lined with rose bushes, berries and mint. Magical. 3) The closets and bathrooms in both rooms have been recently renovated. They were very nice and both bathrooms had bathtubs, which I appreciated. There is nothing like a nice hot bath after a long day exploring a new place. 4) The food was incredibly delicious. I especially liked the pumpkin soup and salmon. The presentation was great and so was the service. I felt like I was eating in a five star restaurant. The owners of this hotel may not be interested in renovating guest rooms unless absolutely necessary, but it would be nice if they did because they could do a lot more business with some modernization and some simple aesthetic improvements. Their guests would be more comfortable as well. My recommendations for improvement to this hotel are the following... just incase management is reading this and wants feedback. 1) Mitigate the spider issue using a nontoxic method and take preventative measures to prevent more spiders from coming in. 2) Renovate the rooms by adding sheer curtains for privacy and some sort of hard floor. There are also too many walls that are blank. At times I felt like I was staying in a renovated warehouse. It would be nice if for example, there was a painting of horses in the stable rooms. The rooms could definitely use a theme. 3) Make 4 large towels, 2 hand towels and 2 full rolls of toilette paper standard for every bathroom. Staying here was one of the highlights of our vacation in England. I will definitely be staying here again and would recommend it to anyone who has an appreciation for historical places. read more

Anyone visiting Rugby (Warwickshire) has got to stay at Brownsover Hall.....Its absolutly stunning. I am totally biast as i met my husband there 11 years ago when he was the chef there and i got a saturday job working as a waitress....so hold lots of fond memories for me....!!! It is a gothic manor house and the decor is in a beutiful style, with red walls with gold crests/fleur de lys things on and oak panneling etc. the grounds are amazing and are always beutifully maintained. the hotel is set in an old lane and is so deceptive as you feel like you are in the middle of no where, but you only have to drive out of the lane and you are right next to all motorway links and near the centre of Rugby. When working there we always had a lot of guest come to stay that were interested in ghosts, as there are many stories about ghosts haunting the hotel. (the lady... the handless rider....monks etc etc) Im not sure how true this is, or if its just urban legends...... but the place can sometimes give you the creeps.... i think its the size of the place that does it and the weird creeking noise you hear in old building like this. My husband swears he once saw a figure go down the grand sweeping stair case....... i suspect he had a few too many beers after his shift....but still!!! The food is great and although we have not worked there for many years we still go back for there sunday dinner quite often, its really good, and the staff are very nice and friendly. The chefs there are very experienced and have worked there for over 13 years, the standard of their food never faulters and i have never had one complaint with any meal i have purchased there, or even when i have attended several wedding there, the food is always top class. The wedding service they provide is outstanding, now do not get me wrong you have to pay for what you get and its not cheap.... but the venue and the grounds are worth it as your photos will be amazing especially the favorite amongst the photographers, which is the bride coming down the stair case!!!! AMAZING!!!! I can not reccomend this hotel enough, i promise anyone who goes there will not be dispointed ....every aspect of the hotel is top class. I just had a look on their website as well to see what there prices are like now for a room, they start from 48.00 per person for bed and breakfast. There are some good special offers on though for eg.... A very cozy inn. Room was nice and water pressure great! Very good food although service was a bit stretched as food took a long while to come. Staff was quite polite and apologetic. I'd certainly recommend staying here if your travels bring you here. read more

I spent my wedding night here before flying out the next day. The shame of it is was that i was pretty wasted which isn't very becoming of such an establishment. The grounds are fantastic, you wouldn't believe that you are less than a mile away from the towns sink estate. i enjoyed my brief stay so much I went back for my divorce party eight years later. read more

Comfortable hotel that caters to weddings, private parties and people having a weekend holiday, but is not particularly well suited to business travellers. I have stayed here several times, as it is very close to work. It is pretty good in general and has personality, but needs to put some significant effort in to beef up service if they want to cater to business travellers. Plus points: very pretty grounds, beautiful garden, walking path, polite staff, comfortable rooms in a very nice and quaint Victorian mock-Gothic building. Quiet area. Good path for running down the adjacent canal. Very nice dining, bar and breakfast areas. They serve a good dinner and have a nice wine list. Complimentary coffee to go in the lobby in the mornings - sometimes. There is also a ghost. Negatives: No fitness facility, and no effort is made to strike a deal with the local gym. Internet signal in rooms is sometimes weak. Poor lighting outside makes it difficult to see the way to your room in the dark, if you are staying in one of the outer buildings. The water pressure in the shower is sometimes weak, and they are stingy with soap so you have to eke out a small bar over several days' stay. You have to call the front desk to activate your phone to dial out after you get to your room. Calling the front desk can be a challenge, as it often rings and rings with no answer. The hotel charged £18 to have an overcoat dry cleaned - and it was not delivered to my room until I asked for it, nor did they have the cleaners tighten a button as I had requested. Breakfast is very expensive at £9.95 for basic cold buffet plus £3.25 for coffee! Full English includes coffee, but costs £13, so no deal there. Breakfast isn't served till later in the weekends but there's no indication of that until you show up asking. read more

Great hotel which is full of history, which the staff will tell you about if you ask. The food is fantastic, I would highly recommend the prawns, the rack of lamb with mustard mash which is cooked to perfection, and the lemon curd cheese cake is really unusual but is very refreshing and not at all sickly. The rooms are gorgeous and I would suggest you upgrade for the extra 25 pound to the stable rooms which are beautiful this hotel is a definite winner, and my family when visiting love staying here. read more

I stayed at Brownsover Hall for one night and I must say I was really impressed. This is a gorgeous Victorian mansion converted into a hotel with plenty of charm. If you're after a modern hotel with all the latest gadgets, this is not it. But if you're after a place with a lot of charm and character, this is as good as it gets. Our room was in the stables, not in the main building and was simply superb, on two levels, a cosy lounge downstairs with a sofa, chair, desk and TV, and bathroom and bedroom upstairs (with another TV). It felt like our own Victorian maisonette, not a hotel room. The food at the restaurant was quite good, not the very best you could get but certainly adequate, the staff in the hotel was always charming and the room price quite reasonable. All in all it was a great stay. read more
