Amazing! Relaxing! Private! I walked back in time, and it was beautiful. Anne and Alan (owners) were extremely polite and very good hosts. And the food! OMG, breakfast was delicious and very full :)

Initially, we had a little trouble getting a hold of them to make the reservation, but once we had that taken care of it was pretty much everything we could ask for. We arrived later on in the evening the first night, so we couldn't actually see much around the B&B and went to dinner. We came back, opened a bottle of wine, sat on the back porch, and stared at what was probably the most stars either of us had ever seen. Then we went to bed. When we woke up, we were not expecting what we saw - shrouded in a morning mist (sounds cheesey - but this is the real deal), the back of the place overlooked the Moose River, a calm portion that almost made up a small lake. It was really amazing, and as it cleared up we were just thrilled to have chosen the place. Access to free canoes and kayaks - which we took full advantage of. The landscaping and area leading down to the river was very nice, a great place to relax after a day of being a tourist or after some light kayaking. The river was very nice, meandering with houses here and there along the shore, perfect for a lazy canoe or kayak trip. Also lots of turtles, water birds, etc., I'd imagine the fishing would be pretty good too. They also have a sweet, sort of vintage tandem bike - good times. We went to have breakfast - a really nice continental - and the owners were really lovely. Super friendly and helpful re: getting around and finding things to do, Stuart and Jimmy were really great. They weren't obtrusive, but made sure we were well taken care of. The room was very nice, everything was sort of an Asian/Northwoods/Antique-y mixture that wasn't too gaudy but you still knew you were in a B&B. If you're planning on hitting upstate New York and you want to stay some place affordable (it was $79/night for 3 nights during the week - you can stay at a crappy hotel for that much or more), this is not to be missed. Friendly, beautiful, and really close to perfect to be totally honest - we were fully satisfied and talk about going back whenever it comes up.

I am so glad we stayed....the location is amazing, and the view from our room was breathtaking. We actually arrived after dark, so we didn't really have an idea of the surroundings when we fell asleep but the inn is just charming inside, so we knew we'd found a gem. The B&B is situated right on the Moose River, and we awoke after a restful evening to birdsong and a clear, lovely day. We stayed in the Farquharson room; it featured a private bath and a large, comfy bed. The picture window was an ideal foil to the morning mist that was just clearing from the Moose River, and once the drapes were drawn back we had a gorgeous, sweeping view of the river and the lush backyard. After getting ready for our day, we headed downstairs and were pleasantly surprised to find several small, cafe-style tables in the dining area. In most B&Bs that we've experienced, there is one large table that can make for a great or horrible experience over breakfast, simply depending upon your table mates. With the small tables, we could choose to talk with our neighbors or not, which is great for one who is not completely sociable prior to her first cup of coffee in the morning. Breakfast was delicious - we started with fresh fruit and yogurt, and then moved on to an amazing, golden-toasty-brown quiche and yummy potatoes. The rates are beyond reasonable and this inn is not to be missed - if you're in the Adirondacks (or just pining for a weekend away), you need to stay here!

Each morning's amazing breakfast was exceptional and my hosts Roland/Steve were very accommodating, If I was ever hungry, it would have been my own fault, but each morning's breakfast got me started in fine fashion! One morning my hosts allowed my sister to enjoy the breakfast with me, even though she was not a guest. The Inn is an oasis from the busy world and while I was staying there it allowed me to finish one book, and take in all the ambiance of a richly appointed Inn. The Portobello is ideally situated so that I could easily get to Utica, Herkimer, and the wonderful Little Falls Canal Days celebration during my stay, Driving a car is a delight in the Mohawk Valley! The Bad: We checked in on a Friday between 5-6 and the staff was not welcoming. They were just "going through the motions" and there was no joy in their work. When we made our way to the room, it was obviously well used and not as clean as we are used to when staying at a Hampton Inn. The carpet was "tired" and looked like it could use a good cleaning. There were smudges on the mirrors, paint peeling from the ceiling in the shower, and a giant cobweb hanging down over the sink in the bathroom. The ugly: Two of the bed pillows (out of 8) where very well loved and did not have any life/support left in them so we called the front desk to get them replaced. The agent we spoke with stated that they do not deliver to the room so we needed to come to the front desk to get replacement pillows. So when I took the pillows to the front desk, I genuinely felt that I was inconveniencing the staff. When I described why I was turning the pillows in, I watched as the staff member that I handed the pillows to openly mocked me as she described my concerns to a fellow staff member. When in Utica, I would avoid this location.

After consideration, we decided to book the Arbor Inn B&B in the New England-esque village of Clinton, NY. Nearing two prestigious Liberal Arts colleges in Hamilton College and Colgate University, this B&B is in a perfect location. Less than a mile from the nearby downtown area full of independent shops, this 1800's former farmhouse sits atop scenically calm rural pastures. The home has since been renovated to offer 5 guest rooms of vacancy. Through it's renovations, the home hasn't compromised it's farmhouse appeal. The architecture, charm and landscape are as authentic as they are pristine. A front porch expansive enough for several rocking chairs that overlook the scenic grounds and an indoor/outdoor dining area in the back of the house that overlooks a distant dairy farm are just a few examples of some of the charm. Inside, the common space is just as welcoming. Two large communal tables for indoor breakfast, an office space with books and a computer available to all the guests, a wooden staircase decorated with vintage family photos and other ornate detailing that all seem to compliment the history of this building just perfectly. The room that we stayed in was equally comfortable, clean, quiet and relaxing. Each morning, you are served a complimentary breakfast of the Innkeepers choice. A Keurig machine is also available for efficient coffee/tea making. The first morning, we had lemon ricotta crêpes served with a strawberry/rhubarb topping and a side of breakfast sausage. On that cooler morning, we sat at the indoor table, conversing with another couple on a variety of adult topics. The next morning, a much more sun-filled one, we sat on the enclosed rear porch that overlooked the expansive grounds and gardens. A serene setting for our final day. Even with such peaceful quarters and location, the Innkeepers can make or break a stay at a bed and breakfast. Carol and Bob though were the consummate hosts. Helpful in their recommendations of nearby activities, welcoming in their accommodations to us, I can't say enough of how friendly and "at-home" we felt during our stay. If planning an overnight visit in the area, this B&B is surely worth a look.
