Really a very quaint place. Great atmosphere. You place your order and they will bring it to you. Had the Brisket platter with coleslaw and ranch beans. The brisket was very tender and they give you a good portion. However it was very light on the "bark" didn't have a lot of smoked flavor. The sauces on the table were a sweet bbq sauce and hot sauce and it wasn't a hot bbq sauce. The ranch beans were overpowered by the chili flavor and the coleslaw was ok. Step straight up to the counter and place your order then side shift to the left and leave your money - that's a little different, kinda feels like a cafeteria but you got no food on your tray, it will arrive later so take a seat and relax and grab ya a handful of them roasted peanuts. This roadside bbq joint is about the only place to eat for miles around no wonder they are serving up a little bit of everythang by golly it's darn near a smorgasbord. You want bar-b-q they got it beef, pork, and turkey you want some catfish yup they got plenty of them too. Nachos, quesadillas, frog legs, meatloaf and chicken fried, smoked and barbecued all of that and more. This place has it covered with an endless selection of sides and ice cold root beer and cream soda inside the icebox so grab one on you're way to the counter. I'd say the service was friendly and the dishes were filled to the brim and the sweet tea is as sweet as are the desserts. I liked the gravel drive and the smoke bellowing from the homemade pits in the back, it ain't fancy by any means but then again I got change from my hundred dollar bill and I fed seven. Prater's is making the effort to keep it real, remember this is Tennessee barbecue and the bar is raised about as high as it can go here in the Volunteer State - unless you're in Memphis ten feet off of Beal. Excellent BBQ and great staff. We order from here every time we are in the area visiting family.

It is a cute little restaurant. There is some outdoor seating and in all it has a cool vibe. The food was okay but I doubt I will go back. The restaurant looked dirty on the inside which grossed me out a bit while eating but this seemed to be due to it being an old building. We both got pulled pork sandwiches and added coleslaw to them which was decent. BBQ sauce is kept on the table. For a side I got potato salad which was very good. My partner got French fries which he didn't like the best. He also got an iced tea and the total came out to around $16. That isn't a bad price for lunch for 2 but the meal really wasn't either of our favorites. read more

Waited and waited for order of Sampler Platter with ribs, BBQ sandwich, and brisket. Received no brisket. Wings instead. Tasted like they were 3 days old. Ate 3/4 of my sandwich and NONE of the ribs as they looked like 5 day old ribs. The roll was good. Never again for me here. read more

Best ribs I've had, and I say this having been to many of what are considered some of America's best (Rendezvous, Dreamland, etc). It's a hole in the wall establishment in an old double wide trailer-converted restaurant, but it is some of the best bbq you will eat. Family-owned establishment and the staff is kind and accommodating. This is a restaurant worth traveling to. read more

We've eaten here 3 times, they are as follows: First time: We're new to the area let's try this barbecue place we always see cars at -- "must be a good sign" -- ordered the sampler, appetizer and some kids items. - Brisket: no visible evidence, and barely any perceivable taste, that it was actually smoked, but plenty of evidence that it had been stacked in a pile of the fry top to reheat before it was plopped in the foam cup it was served in. - Ribs: meh, they ate fine, but loads of sauce can mask a multitude of sins. - BBQ sandwich: another meh, sauce with indiscriminate "bbq meat" - Smoked wings: probably the best of the offering, would be better with less flabby skin texture, needing either longer smoke or some pre/post rendering. - Sides and appetizers: nothing to get excited about. Second time: Having learned from seemingly every local we talked to about the place, apparently everyone "only goes there for the fried chicken tenders", we took some friends who were in from out of town there upon their insistence: - Tenders: good, very salty, but by far the most preferred item that came to the table. - Wings: again, not bad, still quite flabby skin which usually is mostly removed before consuming. - Brisket: New day, same disappointing fry top reheating story. - Burger: Passable burger, but not something any of us really want to get at a barbecue place. Third time: Wife wanted to order tenders family packs for an easy dinner with the nephews in town: - Tenders: good, still salty, get the honey mustard. - Sweet potato fries: couldn't tell you, we ordered them, but got wedges instead for some reason they must've forgot to share with us, but they did not forget the wedge up-charge however. - Rolls: also couldn't tell you, you pay for them with the "family packs" but sounds like a common scenario of them being "forgotten" - The Bill: total for 2 family packs with the up-charges, even the one we didn't order, would be $79.55, charged amount on our card, however, was $88.88 Final verdict, we won't be back, seemed they are having personnel issues when we picked up the last order and were told by lady in charge at the front that "the bags were checked" -- clearly not very well -- and following the ol' three strikes rule, they're out. TL;DR: "Bar-B-Que" restaurant best known for their deep fried chicken tenders and make sure to check your bill...twice. read more

I wasn't expecting much but dammm the bbq blew my mind everything was Moist and cooked to perfection. I have had a lot of bbq the last couple years from Florida to Massachusetts all the way over to texas but this here has put them to shame. We drove by on our way to McMinnville TN and noticed the huge sign and a full parking lot at lunch time. Right then I decided I would pass on the way back for some lunch. The decor is rustic to the extreme even for a bbq place in Tennessee. The menu was very full of great choices, the prices are reasonable, and the brisket is worth driving down from Nashville to have. Wow what a nice portion and delicious, I ate every crumb I could find on my plate. This area is known for Nursery plants but Prater's is putting it on the brisket map for sure. It was once rated the number one BBQ joint for several years in a row... I've been here before (a LONG TIME AGO) and I've got to say I'm disappointed this time. I had a dozen wings, sweet potato fries, coleslaw and ONE drink.. $18.00. Wings were good. Smokey and cooked well. There was no sweetness to the fries, and the coleslaw lacked flavor all together. So, I'm stuck in Mcminnville for work and I thought that I would not find anything delicious at all out here so I expanded my Yelp search a little. (Thank you little map tool thingy.) I drive up to this place - looks like a shack and there is smoking on the outside, always a good sign in the South. I have to say, I was floored by the taste of the ribs! Hard to describe but they had a kick, not a spice kick but some kind of kick. I also had some of the tenders which were a 4 and the wings which were not the best I've ever had but another 4. Best pulled pork ever! I love a vinegar based sauce, but none was needed. You heard me right the pork was perfectly smoked and so delicious nothing was needed. I did add a little sauce about half way through to get the whole experience. I had the pulled pork sandwich accompanied by the beans, coleslaw and fried pickles. I am not usually a beans fan but almost everyone ordered them so I followed their example. The beans were wonderful, they were like a chili that was mostly beans, yummy. The coleslaw was standard fare. The fried pickles we perfect, not to much batter and the pickles still had snap. You might drive right past this place since it is really three trailers connected in the middle of a highway. Please, look for it if you are ever driving through Tennessee. read more

Great food every time. The facility itself is in need of some love but the food never stops being great. They may have the best chicken tenders I've eaten. Their pulled pork is a Warren County staple. I enjoy Prater's every time I have it. As to the physical building...while not terrible it is very small and leaves a bit to be desired. The restrooms are so small you could wash your hands while sitting on the toilet if you wanted. The food and customer service could be 10 stars however. read more

A family restaurant with these sweet memorable ribs . The sweet flavor is cooked into the meat not needing sauce.Side also great. I thought to myself, this could be either really bad or good. However, with a craving for a jumbo pulled pork sandwich, ranch beans and cash in hand, I set out on a mission to McMinnville. I arrived to their sign on the left side of the road in front of a small corrugated tin building with some picnic tables out front on the deck. I entered this place at the back of a line of people with cash in hand ready to eat. With the aroma emanating from the kitchen, SO WAS I. The staff was very polite while I chose a jumbo pulled pork sandwich with ranch beans and fries. Be ready to order as you enter and be served shortly after you seat yourself in one of two internal dining rooms with sweet tea, water, or whatever fountain drink you prefer, in hand. Shortly after I sat in the room with a white haired Naval Aviator and his wife, I was served an excellent pulled pork sandwich with ranch beans (hint of chili in them) and fries lightly salted.
