The best part of this meal were the ribs. I have got to say that these were the best ribs I've ever had in my life. And, let me tell you... First let me say. I don't eat much barbecue. I live in Texas and am not a fan of our smoked bbq. But this is not that! This the best I've ever had. And I thought Kansas City bbq was my favorite. I'm used to Texas BBQ so I might not be the best judge here. I found the BBQ okay. Best thing was the pulled pork. I liked that they had Habanero and Scorpion BBQ sauces but found them lacking heat and too sweet. Sausage was tasty but on the small side. I would have liked some pickles, onions and jalapeños. I didn't ask so I'm not sure if they have them but they didn't come with it and they weren't offered. I was there on a not too busy, cold day and the food wasn't that warm. Stopped by after visiting the Jack Daniel's distillery. I had heard many good things about this place prior and decided to listen to the people. Unfortunately, I came out thinking I shouldn't have listened to the people. Going in immediately we were greeted with red flags. They were out of various things. No fries, no banana pudding, etc. On the upside, the first steps inside of this place were pretty sweet. Loved the character this place had to give. Dollar bills, notes, business cards everywhere you looked. I ordered a crack jack with the sweet potato casserole and potato salad. My boyfriend ordered a loaded potato and a rib plate with green beans and slaw as the sides. The food came out super quick! Unfortunately, everything on my plate was mediocre. Nothing tasted great! I couldn't even finish the entirety of my plate, as a result. My boyfriend enjoyed his ribs, but unfortunately, everything else was a bust too. Tip: The sauces are saviors! They don't have any seafood or vegetarian items, so if you don't eat meat, your choices are minimal. We stopped in after going to Jack Daniel's and also because our bus driver, Frank, suggested this place, probably because he gets a free meal for advertising it. We ended up ordering a smoked chicken salad wrap, ribs, pulled chicken and smoked sausage. We weren't a fan of the rib flavor, but it's probably because we're used to ribs with sauce on them rather than just a dry rub, but they were juicy. The pulled chicken was good and juicy and, with the bbq sauce put on, tasted great. The smoked sausage had a nice crunch and tasted very good with the dipping sauce they gave. First red flag was when we entered and no one was there except for the 3-4 employees seated at a back table and three guys at a table I noticed later. No one was in a hurry to get up and seat us and they had some words about whose turn it was to serve... When I go to a BBQ restaurant I'm looking for a variety of meats. There was no turkey, brisket, or smoke smell, which was the second red flag. I ordered a burger which was decent. While in Lynchburg in July, on a tour to the Jack Daniels Distillery, the driver for our bus tour mentioned Barrel House BBQ for lunch. He vouched heavy for it so naturally, I thought it would be good to try it out. Upon arriving, the outside looks like a small farmhouse in a western movie. Inside has charm though. There is comfortable seating while the walls are filled with notes and markings from previous visitors. There were also notes of money pinned to the walls. Very unique and it felt like something from an old 80s movie. Given the small space, seating was naturally limited. In addition, staffing was limited that day. I entered and was met by a couple who had been waiting for a table. It took some time before a server came over to inquire with all of us. She mentioned that it was a long wait, therefore I decided to take my meal to go. I ordered the "Grilled Cheese on Crack Jack", as per my driver's recommendation. It was ready within a decent amount of time. Before exiting, I grabbed some habanero and mild bbq sauce in a side cup. I found a bench right up the block from the restaurant and dived in. The sandwich is a simple grilled cheese filled with sliced pepper jack cheese and a good sized portion of pulled pork. It's very reminiscent of a sandwich from a barbecue event, do not expect anything fancy. The taste of the sandwich was nothing spectacular and certainly did not live up to the hype. It seemed like it was a rushed venture because the cheese was barely melted but the pork was warm. The seasoning on the pork was ok but the texture was dry. Adding the BBQ sauce was definitely worth it as it kicked up the flavor and moistness. I did not order any sides or beverages for this meal. In terms of pricing, it was $8. I'm not sure it's worth it but for the ingredients, it seemed appropriate. Staff were kind and welcoming despite the short comings. We walk in, hostess seats us at the "bar" tells us our waiter will be right there. Another party of two walks in, she brings them to the booth area, seemingly cooler, their waitress shows up 10 seconds later brings their drinks, 5 minutes later their food comes. We ordered a full rack of ribs to split (eyes bigger than our stomachs - so we thought) with kentucky wonder green beans and their vinegar based slaw - All excellent choices. The ribs we ordered were dry rubbed and honestly -Fantastic. Chuck; the owner came by and laughed while saying - "you'll eat'm all, I promise"! He was not far off the mark - we only left two ribs. The restaurant is full of hand written $1 bills and sharpie signatures on the wall which was unique. I ordered the Pulled Pork plate with two sides of greens beans and potato salad. Came to town to see the JD Distillery, like most. Was recommended Barrel House by the guide. When I tell you this was the best BBQ I've ever had, I completely mean it. The restaurant itself is small, however, we did not wait long to be seated. Honestly, I'd wait an hour plus, that's how good everything was. Service was great. The pulled pork was the most flavorful pulled pork I've had to date. Their house made BBQ sauce should be flavor-town USA signature sauce. The chicken plate was extremely dry, couldn't eat. The brisket was taken off the menu. The burger was basic. The sausage was good with the mustard sauce but I don't think it's an in house recipe. I visited on 7/8/24. The atmosphere was very similar to a dive-bar, but that's exactly what you'd expect in a place like this. The ribs and spicy sausage were the best pieces of barbecued meat I had during my 4 days in Tennessee; lovely smoke and tenderness on the ribs, and the perfect heat from the sausage. The sides were pretty average (the slaw was as finely chopped as KFC's, so there wasn't as much texture), and if you told me that the baked beans were poured out of a can, I'd believe you; they weren't unpleasant, but I expected something more. That being said, the quality of the meat covered a multitude of sins! I'd return if ever in the area again. P.S. We came here prior to our Jack Daniel's tour and it's walking distance from the distillery, so it's easy to just park in the tour lot or in town (can get to everything with a few minute's walk). This place was packed, but things move fast here and we were able to be seated quickly. We all got pulled pork sandwiches for a quick lunch and the BBQ was good (not the best we've had, but it was tasty). Portions were good and we left there satisfied. Came here for a Lynchburg Cheeseburger. The atmosphere is interesting. People sign the walls and leave $1 bills everywhere. Took awhile to get helped, but the staff were polite and apologized. Two tour buses for the distillery stopped in and it was busy. The 8 oz cheeseburger was large and full of good lettuce, tomato, and fixings. The bun was cold and plain.
