I stopped here on my way through Lynchburg and was so excited to see a fried bologna sandwich on the menu. I got it with a side of potato salad and it was delicious! The decor was quite unique. So much to look at and I loved the vibe. I made sure to get a few souvenirs by the register before leaving. If I'm ever in Lynchburg again I will for sure stop and get another friend bologna sandwich!

We stopped here after a tour at the JD Distillery. Much better bbq than Martin's in Nashville, this is a kitschy little place that has been in business for 28 years. We read the other reviews and ordered a few things off the menu: Piggy Mac n cheese, side of ribs, pork sandwich with red beans and rice. The ribs were really good, with a nice bark. Their sauce was good, too. Service was friendly if a little bit "too much" - we kind of felt rushed by the server because they stopped by so many times.

Was trying to go have lunch at a nearby restaurant that had a 2 hour wait and instead walked into the little city center and stumbled upon this little bbq gem!! The most delicious bbq and I had already had a few southern experiences but this one hit! I hadn't had the chance to try gumbo and OMG ‍ I couldn't ate a whole bowl of gumbo and been a happy camper. The bbq itself was just wow too! The ambiance was also great! Very lively and chill. The girls are just moving all over the place multitasking, taking orders, bringing orders. I really enjoyed dining at this establishment. Especially after a fun morning touring the Jack Daniel's distillery. Great area too for shopping for Jack Daniel's souvenirs.

We stopped in for dinner after our Jack tour and we were very hungry! Food was ok, I had the smoked chicken sandwich which chicken was a bit cold, Mac and cheese was pretty good but could use a little more cheese for flavor. My mom said the ribs were good just a little dry but sauce fixed that. Very unique decorations, the train going around is cute. Staff was so kind and was very efficient and did great at checking in!

Excellent food and friendly service!!! Must try: loaded baked potato topped with pulled pork, drizzle with Caboose's own BBQ sauce--lip smackin' good!!

Tasty BBQ and affordable prices! We ordered the half rack of BBQ ribs, the pulled pork sandwich, and the smoked sausage sandwich! The half rack of ribs were tasty. They were tender and fell off the bone. The Mac and cheese was a side which was creamy and tasted homemade. The beans were sweet. Docked 1 star because the ribs still had the membrane in the bottom - but still delicious! Pulled pork sandwich with an upgraded side of Mac and cheese. Devoured within minutes. Very tasty with their spicy BBQ sauce. Smoked Sausage Sandwich with a side of red beans and rice (and more sausage) is packed with flavor and just the right amount of heat! Add sauce if you like, but it didn't need it! I will return!

My wife and I stopped in for lunch after visiting Jacks place up the road and we were glad we did. Great service and excellent BBQ. They have lots of interesting autographed photos on the wall to enjoy as well.

We had a quick and delicious lunch here after the Jack Daniels tour. Everything was tasty and and the perfect portion. Our waitress was hilarious and fast. The place is very fun and it was jam packed on a Tuesday afternoon. Not sure what the bad reviews are from, I'm glad we ignored them!

Small hometown atmosphere. The staff are friendly. We had the ribs, pulled chicken, and a pizza. All the food was delicious. We will definitely be back.

In a small town where restaurants come and go, BBQ Caboose stands the test of time. Probably not the best BBQ of your life, but very good. Clean setting. Good service. Fun atmosphere. Fairly limited menu compared to most BBQ places, but enough to satisfy the masses. When I was in this past week, I wanted a lighter lunch due to dinner plans later. Our server recommended the piggy mac, which was delicious and fairly light in size, but no doubt packed with calories. Washed it down with a cold beer. When on the Lynchburg town square, you can do a lot worse than this little family run BBQ joint!

I stop everytime I head down south from Nashville, usually working in the side room for half the day so I can avoid rush hour in Nashville. From a beer standpoint, this is one of the top breweries in Tennessee. They are well known nationally, as well. The building is a warehouse looking structure on the outside, but they have nicely decorated the tap room. Ample seating both inside and out and they have bands on some weekends. I have tried the flatbreads, a couple of sandwiches, and the Dinosaur wings (only kidding, but they are the largest chicken wings they can buy, so ample sized). I prefer the wings most of the time - except their rendition of Nashville Hot - but this time opted for a meatball sandwich. If you are trying to be an Italian food afficianado, this might not be in, but the sauce works well with these meatballs and there is ample cheese. As one normally focusing on Keto, adding a fork meant I could eat the kibbles and bits and leave the bun. Two thumbs up. As for the beer, they have some of the best IPAs and I finally tried the porter this go around. Many of their beers are rated above 4.0 on untappd and it is not just a local bump kind of thing. The brewery, as a whole, is 3.92 and also well deserved. To my normal "Will I be back" question, I think the answer is already clear. I do return almost every time I pass by.

Don't get me wrong, it's still down home fried catfish. And they have some of the best hush puppies you can find. But the quality of the fish, the declining service, and the uneven cooking is concerning. First off, you will have to wait to be seated. That is a given no matter what time you go. They are simply that popular. I expect that and have no problem with waiting. But don't seat my party and make us wait another 10-15 minutes to be acknowledged by the server. There is clearly not enough staff to handle the tables they have. I'd rather sit out front talking with friends and family than be sitting at a table being ignored. Once our server came and took our food and drink orders (she was really nice but obviously overwhelmed), she came back with all of the beverages but one iced tea. When we flagged her down, she apologized and said she'd be right back with it. She didn't return until our food was served. She apologized again about the missing tea and finally got it. The hush puppies were outstanding as always. But the fried catfish had an off taste. And she forgot one of the side dishes on three of our plates. I'm not sure if that was her fault or the kitchen but that doesn't make it right. My baked potato was not cooked through (yes, I had the baked potato instead of the standard fries, an odd choice I admit). The white beans were tasty but on the verge of mush, nothing like the saucy beans I'd had here previously. And our drinks sat empty for long periods of time before anyone noticed. This place is a hidden gem, out in the middle of nowhere, and people drive quite a distance to come here. It's a shame that the food and service seem to be declining because I always enjoy coming here....until this trip.

Though I miss seeing the sign for its humorously named predecessor (the "beer, baloney, and more" store), Hensley's is an upgrade in terms of food! In addition to standard gas station snacks, Hensley's cooks up burgers and chicken sandwiches as well as a southern plate lunch each day. They also have a small salad bar. Desserts include fried pies; I thought I saw a sign for ice cream too though I never spied a machine. The place is hoppin with locals and it's clear word has spread. There's not a lot of super convenient options in the area but even still, we enjoyed our meal. My coworker had visited before on an earlier trip I didn't attend and she enjoyed their Philly cheesesteak. This time, she got a chicken bacon ranch wrap and onion rings. I ordered a hamburger with bacon and French fries. Their soda machine wasn't functional when we visited but we were able to get drinks from the convenience store side. Diet Coke only though, no Coke Zero and no Pepsi products whatsoever. /: Our food took a few minutes to come out but they were busy and it was clearly fresh. The burger came on a simple but soft bun. It had pretty good flavor, though I will say it was a touch dry in parts. Fries had a slightly frozen-ish texture and might've benefited from a touch more salt but they were hot and plentiful. The bacon on my burger was cooked very well and was nice and crispy. My coworker enjoyed her onion rings and said the CBR wrap was her favorite thing she'd tried so far. The menu covers a good many American classics and the plate lunch specials seem to change often and were quite popular on my visit. You pay at the counter with your ticket when you check out. I think the prices are fair. Service was nice and helpful. Overall, this is a solid stop for some fresh grub in an area that was previously mostly bereft of options. Give them a try if you're passing through.

It's held annually in October and is such a lovely drive up to Lynchburg! Gary N did a great job of accurately capturing the "feel" of the event in his numerous photos posted here! There are a lot of vendors set up for this event selling eats, t-shirts, and more. There's a large, covered pavilion where the judging happens, and spectators can watch from bleachers. I don't recall the number of judges but I do recall at least one local "celebrity" newscaster among the judges. The Styrofoam containers for judging are deftly prepared and rushed to the judging area with immense intensity - it really is something to watch, and the "food runner" will scream at you to "get out of the way" if they need to! Others referenced free samples, which wasn't the case on our visit, except for the international area. No guests/visitors get samples of the competition BBQ to my knowledge. If you want lunch, you'll need to get something from the vendors. However, the international area competitors did offer us ample samples of their BBQ. They were all very friendly, too! The competition area is fairly spread out, so wear comfortable shoes and the entryway is sloped, so there's that. It's free as far as I know, and everyone should attend at least one championship BBQ competition - the Jack Daniels event is a well-run, fun one to attend.

The square is fully covered with tents and vendors as you walk in, live country music is playing. All the downtown shops are open and plenty to explore and see in the town. However, food is in our mind and we continue down to the food tents and competition area. Lots of free samples, but I did not see any from the competitors which was a disappointment. But still plenty to see and try. They also have food instructions, vendor demos, Etc I do wish they would move this so it is not the same weekend as Tennessee vs Alabama.
