Extremely disappointed. We had looked forward to eating here all day. Skipped breakfast to make sure I would be hungry. We had been here a couple times before and loved the food and had quick service. We visited today with a group of 9. Took an hour to get the food even though there was hardly anyone there. Then we were brought our orders of BBQ Nachos. A few chips (stale and chewy) a child's size portion of pulled pork, and some yellow cheese sauce. Three of us ordered this and it was the same for all three orders. $11.99 each! I didn't say anything at the time because the waitress was new and I didn't want to ruin her first day. She was sweet, but didn't know the menu. We paid for the bill and had to go get something to eat elsewhere. Hope that this doesn't continue for others, but we won't be back. read more

Have eaten there regularly for a couple of years now. A few months back the owner/manager of the restaurant tragically passed. We are heartbroken for them. The restaurant changed names (and management) and became "Grandads." The things that were always delicious and high quality suffered. The menu seems to have remained pretty much the same but not the food. I recently ordered the ribs (which I always get). The waitress came by several times and said it was taking a few minutes while they were cooked. There were not busy at the time and ususally the food came out pretty fast in the past. It all seemed odd at the time. The ribs came out and well, they were just awful. They tasted as though they had been boiled. I don't know that they were but they certainly didn't taste of the lovely bbq flavor they always had in the past. They just weren't really edible. We've eaten at the other location before, but this was our first visit to this one. The staff was super friendly, but it was obvious that they were short handed. There also seemed to be a very large party on the back patio. Our food took some time to get to us but it was THE BEST. You will be full and ready for a nap. While the wait staff was very friendly, the food was clearly an afterthought. The "cook" quite literally threw plates together. The ribs were so overdone they were black and burnt to a crisp and looked like cat food. The fried pickles were soggy and so salty they were inedible. The cheeseburger was even bad and was thrown together with no care or pride. Not the least of which was the filthy state of the kitchen, and that's only what was visible from the hallway. I stumbled upon Prater's BBQ as I was randomly driving through Tennessee along my cross country road trip. Basically, I just decided on a whim that I was hungry and being here in good ole, Tennessee...I figured there had to be some good spots for some classic barbecue. I Googled BBQ restaurants here in Manchester and that is how I discovered this Prater's BBQ. Upon pulling up to Prater's, it was a random Monday early afternoon just after lunchtime. In fact, there was barely anyone here. Well, good for me as I practically had the entire restaurant all to myself. And very good in the fact that they even offered dine-in during this pandemic. The outside decor to Prater's sort of reminded me of one giant dining house that your every day blue collar worker would come to. I liked the appearance before walking inside. I was kindly greeted and seated immediately. The menu here at Prater's was very typical of your good old fashioned BBQ spot. There were loads of appetizer options. They even had salads, wings, seafood, specialty sandwiches, chicken and steaks. But obviously, the reason why I was here was for the barbecue! I could have chosen ribs...but I'm more of a BBQ pork and brisket type of person. You do have the option of getting pork or brisket in a regular or large size sandwich or go with a loose plate/platter. And by the way...everything on the menu was very very cheap! I mean, prices for all the food was as low as I had ever seen! For example...a regular size BBQ pork sandwich was $4.69! Yes I'll repeat that...$4.69! A large sandwich was $5.79...a bargain. And for a loose BBQ pork plate it was $8.69! How awesome. Well I certainly did not let the prices hold me back. Now I wasn't sure whether to choose the BBQ Pork or BBQ Brisket. So I asked my server what she recommended and she mentioned...to go with the beef brisket since it was leaner and less fattier. I splurged, lol, and chose the Beef Brisket Platter. I got 4 long pieces of BBQ beef brisket along with 2 side items, a roll and some sliced pickles and raw onions all for $8.59...what an absolute deal!!! I chose French fries and potato salad as my side items. One thing...I was very, very surprised Prater's did not offer Mac-N-Cheese on their menu. Hmm...almost every BBQ joint I have visited...they always have mac-n-cheese to order. Wow, so yeah I had to pivot a little. Btw...some other side items included...coleslaw, green beans, ranch beans, baked potato, sweet potato, onion rings, potato wedges and sweet potato fries. One other thing, inside Prater's I liked the whole entire setting. It looks like they have a setup for a lunch buffet which unfortunately I probably just missed out on and why the restaurant appeared deserted when I visited. (when everyone leaves after the buffet is finished) Then there were plenty of tables and chairs offered with a row of booths lining the outer section of the restaurant. Upon receiving my BBQ Beef Brisket, it looked pretty decent. I wasn't totally "wowed" by it, but it appeared okay. Now...the beef brisket was served plain and quite dry. It was not baked, cooked or smoked within any BBQ sauce. What they did was feature side bottles of sauce to add to the brisket as an option. Ya know, you have a choice of honey BBQ sweet sauce, a spicy sauce, a mustard based sauce and a tangy sauce. I just always go with the honey BBQ sauce. I had to drench the brisket down plenty as it ate pretty dry. Overall the brisket was mediocre, nothing too special. The French fries were long and straight...not bad, but not great. The potato salad...not sure why I went with it...but it was alright. Overall, the brisket with fries and potato salad was I guess just average. I had very high expectations that this Prater's was a real popular gem of a BBQ spot, but my meal was sort of forgettable. And the side roll had no seasoning to it and wasn't hot or fresh out of the oven. The roll was disappointing. With my fountain soda (unlimited refills obviously), tax and tip I believe it came to about $17. My server was real nice and since my meal was so cheap I gladly gave a good tip. So although my meal fell a little flat for me...I still just appreciated taking a break from my long cross country road trip with having a quiet early afternoon meal here. Although Prater's was certainly not the best BBQ experience...if I lived here in Manchester, Tennessee I'd still return to try some other options on their menu plus I really liked how authentic the ambiance and feel of being here at a southern BBQ restaurant. And you cannot beat the prices! They were as inexpensive as I have ever come across for a place specializing in barbecue. read more

Overall, I'd say this was a really delicious place to stop to eat and have a beer after a day of hiking at Short Springs Natural Area. We are from out of town and we're just here for the day and needed to get a late lunch/early dinner before hitting the road. I got the fried mushrooms and the bbq sandwich plate. The fried mushrooms were delicious! The BBQ was also quite tasty, however, I was quite disappointed as to amount of pork that was on the sandwich(MAYBE 1/4 of a cup if even that). This is why it got only four stars instead of 5. As a bbq place is expect a little bit more on the sandwich. Anyways, the slaw was wonderfully flavored and had the right amount of crunch and the green beans were also quite tasty. Tried to enjoy a nice dinner with my husband. Music was so loud couldn't even hear. Took 45 minutes to get food! First time stopping into this BBQ place located right off I24. Now we stopped after normal lunch time so between crowds. They had a Buffett set up but you could tell food has been out a while. I only wanted BBQ so went with it anyway as it was close to same price and I get two sides. The BBQ pork is very good. Loved the sweet BBQ sauce and could have had more. Wife got the meatloaf and I tried that. Might be the best juicy meatloaf I have had. Wish I got some to bring home. The service was excellent. A real sweet young girl took our drink order as soon as we sat and was very pleasant. She checked on us regularly and I enjoyed talking to her. Only negative was food temp. Think the food warmers might have shut off early on the food but still was great. I will hit this place more as I am in the area with family here. read more

What a great surprise to find this as I was hauling furniture from Kentucky to Florida! A meat, two sides, bread and a drink for $7.99 at lunch! It's a cafeteria style set up from WAY back. I chose the meat load over the burnt tips and it was amazing. Don't tell my mom but it may be the best meatloaf I've eaten. I also had the greens with a little pepper vinegar and the were exceptional. The squash casserole as also very good and the cornbread was cornbread! I did not even look at the regular menu and only glanced at what was available for the meat and two sides the other days. The food here is good. However, this is far as I will go. The red headed "manager" is just about as rude as they come. Not only did I have a bad experience with this place but on a different time so did my kids. Most of the people here are super sweet but the hostess when I told her I think the phone was off the hook came back with a snarky attitude and the manager when I told her the menu had a different number of tenders then online had a nasty attitude as well. The thing about owning a restaurant is that the food can be the best around but if your manager or staff are rude people will drive farther away for less tasting food to simply avoid the rudeness. I can't expressed enough how blunt and rude the red headed manager was. When I tried to explain to her that there was a difference in the count she said I don't make the menus so what do you want me to do about it. She then went on to say the owner is outside, go talk to him. As a manager she should be able to handle that situation rather than Instantly being rude. They double charged my son earlier that day and when he called in to get it handled the same manager told him she couldn't do anything about it and call back to speak to the owner tomorrow, which they were closed on Sunday. When that was pointed out she said call Monday then. When he asked her name she hung up in his face. Again, good is good but the people are rude and take. So, if you like a milder BBQ, this is your place. And if you like fried pickles, start with those. And leave room for beans! The spicy sauce was like a wing sauce and pretty spicy.
